Five species of monogeneans collected from marine fishes of the Pacific coast of Chile and Perú were studied. Three of them are new species: Interniloculus chilensis n. sp. (Capsalidae), Neoheterobothrium insalaris n. sp. (Diclidophoridae) and Loxura peruensis n. sp. (Axinidae) parasitic on Sebastes capensis (Scorpaenidae), Paralichthys sp. (Bothiidae) and Belone scapularis (Belonidae), respectively. Two new combinations are proposed, Intracotyle neghmei (Microcotylidae) for Neobivagina neghmei Villalba, 1987 and Hargicotlyle conceptionensis (Diclidophoridae) for Choricotyle conceptionensis Villalba, 1987.

Three new species of Benedenia are described from the Great Barrier Reef: B. ernsti n. sp., B. fieldsi n. sp. and B. haywardi n. sp. Allobenedenia ishikawae (Goto, 1894) Yamaguti, 1963 does not fit the diagnosis of Allobenedenia Yamaguti, 1963 as amended by Yang, Kritsky & Sun, 2004 and we return it to Benedenia as B. ishikawae (Goto, 1894) Monticelli, 1902. We consider Benedenia sargocentron Zhang, Yang & Liu, 2001 a synonym of B. hawaiiensis. Benedenia now consists of 25 species with a broad range of morphological variations, host relationships and microhabitats. A key to species of Benedenia is presented. Benedenia fieldsi may pose a significant risk to sea cage aquaculture of its serranid hosts.

Parasites of six Notothenia species were studied in 1979 at he Polish Academy of Sciences′ H. Arctowski Station on the South Shetlands. Only two fish species, namely, Notothenia coriiceps neglecta and N. rossi marmorata, showed the presence of external parasites, Pseudobenedenia nototheniae Johnston, 1931. A number of observations have been made on the parasite′s morphology. Evidence in support of Gibson (1976) who regards P. lauriei Szidat, 1965 as synonymous with P. nototheniae Johnston, 1931 is given.

The tegumental surface of Benedenia sp. (Monogenea: Capsalidae), a skin-dwelling parasite of Haemulon sciurus (blue-striped grunt) from coastal waters of Bermuda, was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The dorsal surface of the body and haptor is covered with comparatively long, flexible microvilli (2 to 3 μm in length; density 5/μm2), and the ventral surface of the body is covered with short, stubby microvilli (0.5 μm in length; density 10/μm2). The surface of the two anterior adhesive discs has three transverse zones which differ morphologically: the anterior region has a reticulate texture with uniciliated structures arising from some of the elevated ridges; the middle zone has a dense mat of short microvilli with scattered uniciliated structures, each of which is surrounded by a collar of shorter protuberances; the posterior zone is smooth and lacks ciliated structures. The ventral surface of the haptor is also smooth with the bare extremities of the accessory sclerites and the anterior and posterior hamuli protruding. The surface topography of Benedenia sp. is compared with that of other monogeneans.

Nous avons etudie en detail les cellules ciliees et la chetotaxie de la larve de Benedenia monticelli (Parona y Perugia, 1895), parasite de Mugil cephalus L.Nos observations sur l’oncomiracidium de Trochopus pini (Van Beneden et Hesse, 1863) et Entobdella soleae (Van Beneden et Hesse, 1863) prouvent qu’il y a un plan commun d’organisation de ces structures chez ces Capsalidae.Ce plan est different de celui mis en evidence chez les Dactylogyroidea d’une part et les Polyopisthocotylea d’autre part.Le type chetotaxique Capsaloidea est original et represente, peut-etre un schema ontogeniquement plus avance comme le sont chez ces Monogenes l’armature du hapteur et la disposition du systeme excreteur.

Nasicola hogansi n.sp. is proposed for material from bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) taken in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off Prince Edward Island, Canada, and is distinguished from Nasicola klawei (Stunkard, 1962), the type and only other known species in the genus, by the smaller total body length, a haptoral diameter of approximately 40% of the total length (as compared with 20–30%), a greater number of small dorsomarginal spines, fewer large dorsomarginal spines, and a greater number of testes. An emended generic diagnosis for Nasicola Yamaguti, 1968 is provided. Four genera are recognized within the Capsalinae: Capsala Bosc, 1811; Tristoma Cuvier, 1817; Capsaloides Price, 1938; and Nasicola Yamaguti, 1968. Reference is made to the taxonomic confusion regarding generic definitions within the subfamily; it is suggested that taxonomic revision of the Capsalinae would result in major systematic changes at the generic level.

Entobdella curvunca sp. nov. (Trematoda: Capsalidae) is described from Hippoglossus hippoglossus from the Gulf of the St. Lawrence.

A new species of monogenetic trematode based primarily on the characteristics of the opisthaptor and anchors is described. The criteria constituting the genus Trochopus Diesing, 1850 are reconsidered. A key to the species of Trochopus is included.

No presente trabalho é feito um estudo de cinco trematódeos monogenéticos pertencentes à família Capsalidae Baird, 1853. Para a subfamília Benedeniinae Johnston, 1931, foram criadas duas espécies pertencenteso ao gênero Benedenia Diesing, 1858: Benedenia pompatica sp. n., que muito se assemelha a Benedenia sciaenae (Beneden, 1852), diferindo desta principalmente pela estrutura do 2º e 3º pares de macroganchos e Benedenia innobilitata sp. n. que mais se aproxima de Benedenia jaliscana Bravo-Hollis, 1951, afastando-se desta espécie pela ausência do cirro armado e também pela estrutura e localização da vagina. Da subfamília Trochopodiane (Price, 1936) são apresentados novos hospedadores: Lepidotrigla cavillone para Trochopus pini (Beneden & Hesse, 1863) e Serranus cabrilla para Megalocotyle grandiloba Paperna e Kohn, 1964, sendo apresentadas com novas descrições e ilustrações. Ainda desta subfamília é criada uma nova espécie do gênero Allomegalocotyle (Robinson, 1961) Yamaguti, 1963. A. gabbari sp. n. diferencia-se de A. johnstoni (Robinson, 1961), única espécie do gênero, pela morfologia dos macroganchos, localização do poro vaginal e vesícula seminal bem desenvolvida e externa. In this paper we make a study of five monogenetic trematodes of the family Capsalidae Baird, 1853. We describe two new species of the genus Benedenia Diesing, 1858, Benedeniinae Johnston, 1931: Benedenia pompatica sp. n., which is very similar to Benedenia sciaenae (Beneden, 1852) abd differs from it mainly by the structure of the second and third pair of the haptoral hooks; and Benedenia innobilitata sp. n. near to Benedenia jaliscana Bravo-Hollis, 1951 does not have the armed cirrus, proper to the last and the structure and position of the vagina is also a considered characteristic. For the subfamily Trochopodinae (Price, 1936) we give new hosts: Lepidotrigla cavillone for Trochopus pini (Beneden & Hesse, 1863) and Serranus cabrilla for Megalocotyle grandiloba Paperna & Kohn, 1964, and we also redescribe and illustrate them. Under this subfamily we also propose a new species of the genus Allomegalocotyle (Robinson, 1961) by the morphology of the haptoral hooks, the position of the vaginal aperture and the big external seminal vesicle.

Two species of Nasicola Yamaguti, 1968 are described from the nasal cavities of tunas (Thunnus spp.) from off the coast of Brazil: N. brasiliensis n. sp. from T. obesus (Lowe) and the type-species, N. klawei (Stunkard, 1962), from T. albacares (Bonn.). The new species is differentiated from N. klawei on the basis of the large number of testes and from N. hogansi Wheeler & Beverley-Burton, 1986 by its greater body-size, proportionately smaller haptor and smaller number of marginal spines. The host-specificity of Nasicola spp. is commented upon.

Phyllodistomum scrippsi sp. n. is described from the urinary bladder and Neobenedenia girellae is reported from the skin of Pimelometopon pulchrum from La Jolla, California. Phyllodistomum scrippsi differs from P. borisbychowskyi in possessing lobed vitellaria, fewer extracecal uterine loops, irregular to lobed gonads, and larger eggs; and from P. acceptum in possessing a short esophagus, nondigitiform vitelline lobes, and an oral sucker larger than the acetabulum. An annotated checklist of trematodes parasitizing P. pulchrum is given. A specimen of the California sheephead, Pimelometopon pulchrum (Ayres), was collected off La Jolla, California, in March 1974. The urinary bladder contained eight specimens of an unreported species of Phyllodistomum Braun, 1899 (Digenea: Gorgoderidae), and over 100 specimens of the monogenean Neobenedenia girellae (Hargis, 1955) Yamaguti, 1963, were found on the skin. The digeneans were fixed in situ with hot AFA, removed from the urinary bladder, and stored in 70% ethanol. Monogeneans were collected as suggested by Rogers (1966) and stored in 10% formalin. All worms were stained with Mayer's hematoxylin and mounted in Canada balsam for study as whole mounts. Figures were drawn with the aid of a camera lucida. All measurements are in microns unless

In a recent issue of Parasitology, I have described (Jain, 1959) a new genus of freshwater Tetraonchinae, Sprostonia, from the gill filaments of some Indian fishes. In a personal communication Dr Nora G. Sproston has kindly pointed out to me that the same name has been used by Bychowsky in his monograph on Monogenea (1957), published by the Institute of the Zoological Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R., for Sprostonia squatinae (MacCallum, 1921) which he makes genotype and removes it from Trochopodinae to a new subfamily Megalocotylinae in Capsalidae. I therefore change the name of the genus which I have described to Neosprostonia, Sprostonia being preoccupied.
