151. Coulomb Rescattering in Nondipole Interaction of Atoms with Intense Laser Fields

Abstract

We investigate the ionization dynamics of atoms irradiated by an intense laser field using a semiclassical model that includes magnetic Lorentz force in the rescattering process. We find that, the electrons tunneled with different initial transverse momenta (i.e., perpendicular to the instantaneous electric field direction) distributed on a specific circle in the momentum plane can finally converge to the same transverse momentum after experiencing Coulomb forward scattering. These electron trajectories lead to a bright spot structure in the 2D transverse momentum distribution, and particularly in the long-wavelength limit, a nonzero momentum peak in the direction antiparallel to the laser propagation (or radiation pressure) direction. Making analysis of the subcycle dynamics of rescattering trajectories, we unveil the underlying mechanism of the anti-intuitive peak. Beyond the strong field approximation and the dipole approximation, we quantitatively predict the spot center and the peak position. Abstract

ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to determine associations between anthropometry and echocardiographic measures of cardiac structure and function in Hispanic/Latinos.MethodsA total of 1,824 participants from ECHO-SOL were included. We evaluated associations between echocardiographic measures of left ventricular structure and function and anthropometric measures using multivariable-adjusted linear and logistic regression models adjusting for traditional cardiovascular risk factors.ResultsThe mean age was 56 ± 0.17 years, 57% were women. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 30 ± 9.4 kg m-2, waist circumference (WC) was 100 ± 18 cm, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was 0.93 ± 0.15. Abstract

Chronic periodontitis (CP) has a genetic component, particularly its severe forms. Evidence from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) has highlighted several potential novel loci. Here, the authors report the first GWAS of CP among a large community-based sample of Hispanics/Latinos. The authors interrogated a quantitative trait of CP (mean interproximal clinical attachment level determined by full-mouth periodontal examinations) among 10,935 adult participants (mean age: 45 y, range: 18 to 76 y) from the Hispanic Community Health Study / Study of Latinos. Genotyping was done with a custom Illumina Omni2.5M array, and imputation to approximately 20 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms was based on the 1000 Genomes Project phase 1 reference panel. Analyses were based on linear mixed models adjusting for sex, age, study design features, ancestry, and kinship and employed a conventional P < 5 × 10-8 statistical significance threshold. The authors identified a genome-wide significant association signal in the 1q42.2 locus ( TSNAX-DISC1 noncoding RNA, lead single-nucleotide polymorphism: rs149133391, minor allele [C] frequency = 0.01, P = 7.9 × 10-9) and 4 more loci with suggestive evidence of association ( P < 5 × 10-6): 1q22 (rs13373934), 5p15.33 (rs186066047), 6p22.3 (rs10456847), and 11p15.1 (rs75715012). We tested these loci for replication in independent samples of European-American ( n = 4,402) and African-American ( n = 908) participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. There was no replication among the European Americans; however, the TSNAX-DISC1 locus replicated in the African-American sample (rs149133391, minor allele frequency = 0.02, P = 9.1 × 10-3), while the 1q22 locus was directionally concordant and nominally significant (rs13373934, P = 4.0 × 10-2). This discovery GWAS of interproximal clinical attachment level-a measure of lifetime periodontal tissue destruction-was conducted in a large, community-based sample of Hispanic/Latinos. It identified a genome-wide significant locus that was independently replicated in an African-American population. Identifying this genetic marker offers direction for interrogation in subsequent genomic and experimental studies of CP.

Abstract

The multibeam klystron (MBK) faces the challenge of miniaturization together with stringent requirements for high power and high efficiency (HE) in L-band and below frequency regimes. Inspired by the core stabilization method (CSM), this article proposes three types of hybrid-modes resonant cavities, which can operate simultaneously in two harmonic modes. The large-signal simulation and 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results demonstrate that this novel CSM MBK equipped with two hybrid-modes resonant cavities, operating at both fundamental and second harmonics, could provide up to 11.5-MW output power with 65.9% electronic efficiency at a total circuit length of 592 mm. This L-band MBK is launched with six beamlets, of which the beam voltage is 110 kV and the total current is 168 A. Moreover, compared with the MBKs designed by the traditional approach with only fundamental cavities or the CSM approach with individual harmonic cavities, the new hybrid HE klystron proposal exhibits not only decent efficiency performance but also, more importantly, ultracompact dimensions, where the circuit length is significantly shortened by about 45% and 35%, respectively.

Abstract

Given that it was a once-in-a-century emergency event, the confinement measures related to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused diverse disruptions and changes in life and work patterns. These changes significantly affected water consumption both during and after the pandemic, with direct and indirect consequences on biodiversity. However, there has been a lack of holistic evaluation of these responses. Here, we propose a novel framework to study the impacts of this unique global emergency event by embedding an environmentally extended supply-constrained global multi-regional input-output model (MRIO) into the drivers-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) framework. This framework allowed us to develop scenarios related to COVID-19 confinement measures to quantify country-sector-specific changes in freshwater consumption and the associated changes in biodiversity for the period of 2020-2025. The results suggest progressively diminishing impacts due to the implementation of COVID-19 vaccines and the socio-economic system's self-adjustment to the new normal. In 2020, the confinement measures were estimated to decrease global water consumption by about 5.7% on average across all scenarios when compared with the baseline level with no confinement measures. Further, such a decrease is estimated to lead to a reduction of around 5% in the related pressure on biodiversity. Given the interdependencies and interactions across global supply chains, even those countries and sectors that were not directly affected by the COVID-19 shocks experienced significant impacts: Our results indicate that the supply chain propagations contributed to 79% of the total estimated decrease in water consumption and 84% of the reduction in biodiversity loss on average. Abstract

Despite well-defined criteria for radiographic diagnosis of atypical femur fractures (AFFs), missed and delayed diagnosis is common. An AFF diagnostic software could provide timely AFF detection to prevent progression of incomplete or development of contralateral AFFs. In this study, we investigated the ability for an artificial intelligence (AI)-based application, using deep learning models (DLMs), particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), to detect AFFs from femoral radiographs. A labelled Australian dataset of pre-operative complete AFF (cAFF), incomplete AFF (iAFF), typical femoral shaft fracture (TFF), and non-fractured femoral (NFF) X-ray images in anterior-posterior view were used for training (N = 213, 49, 394, 1359, respectively). An AFFnet model was developed using a pretrained (ImageNet dataset) ResNet-50 backbone, and a novel Box Attention Guide (BAG) module to guide the model's scanning patterns to enhance its learning. All images were used to train and internally test the model using a 5-fold cross validation approach, and further validated by an external dataset. External validation of the model's performance was conducted on a Sweden dataset comprising 733 TFF and 290 AFF images. Precision, sensitivity, specificity, F1-score and AUC were measured and compared between AFFnet and a global approach with ResNet-50. Excellent diagnostic performance was recorded in both models (all AUC >0.97), however AFFnet recorded lower number of prediction errors, and improved sensitivity, F1-score and precision compared to ResNet-50 in both internal and external testing. Sensitivity in the detection of iAFF was higher for AFFnet than ResNet-50 (82 % vs 56 %). In conclusion, AFFnet achieved excellent diagnostic performance on internal and external validation, which was superior to a pre-existing model. Abstract

Zero-field magnetization switching (ZFS) driven by current-induced spin–orbit torque (SOT) holds significant importance in spintronic applications. The introduction of a lateral asymmetric structure (LAS) through oblique deposition proves to be an effective strategy for breaking inversion symmetry, thereby enabling SOT-driven ZFS. However, the coexistence of wedge thickness structure and slanted columnar microstructure in the obliquely deposited films poses challenges in distinguishing their respective effects. In this study, we conducted a comparative investigation of the perpendicular magnetic properties and current-induced switching in W/Co40Fe40B20/MgO films by oblique sputtering of the W underlayer at a fixed tilting angle and at two opposite tilting angles with its wedge thickness compensated. We have found that the perpendicular magnetic properties of the Co40Fe40B20 layer are significantly altered at large tilting angles, irrespective of whether the W wedge thickness is compensated. Notably, at a tilting angle of 50°, ZFS is realized for both the conventional oblique sample and the compensating oblique sample, with the switching polarity contingent on the final tilting direction of the W layer. We have identified a gradient in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in these samples, attributed to the laterally varying roughness associated with the slanted columnar microstructure of the W underlayer. This study underscores the dominant role of microscopic LAS in obliquely deposited films in breaking SOT symmetry. Our research sheds light on the impact of the slanted columnar microstructure on the magnetic and magneto-transport properties of films, offering valuable insights for advancing spintronic device research. Abstract

Precision sensing, and in particular high precision magnetometry, is a central goal of research into quantum technologies. For magnetometers, often trade-offs exist between sensitivity, spatial resolution, and frequency range. The precision, and thus the sensitivity of magnetometry, scales as $1/\sqrt {T_2}$ with the phase coherence time, $T_2$, of the sensing system playing the role of a key determinant. Adapting a dynamical decoupling scheme that allows for extending $T_2$ by orders of magnitude and merging it with a magnetic sensing protocol, we achieve a measurement sensitivity even for high frequency fields close to the standard quantum limit. Using a single atomic ion as a sensor, we experimentally attain a sensitivity of $4.6$ pT $/\sqrt{Hz}$ for an alternating-current magnetic field near 14 MHz. Abstract

In multiphase modeling of fluidized beds, pulverized coal combustors, spray combustors, etc., where different temperatures for gas and solid phases are considered, the governing equations result in separate energy equations for each phase. For high-temperature applications, where radiation is a significant mode of heat transfer, accurately predicting the radiative source terms across each individual phase is an essential task. A spectral photon Monte Carlo (PMC) method is presented here with detailed description of the implementation features, including the spectral treatment of solid particles, random number correlations, and a scheme to split emission and absorption across phases. Numerical results from the PMC method are verified against direct numerical integration of the radiative transfer equation (RTE), for example, problems including a cylindrically enclosed homogeneous gas-particulate medium and a simple fluidized bed example. The PMC method is then demonstrated on a snapshot of a pulverized-coal combustion simulation.

Abstract

Background: Asthma and atopic dermatitis (AD) are chronic allergic conditions, along with allergic rhinitis and food allergy and cause high morbidity and mortality both in children and adults. This study aims to evaluate the global, regional, national, and temporal trends of the burden of asthma and AD from 1990 to 2019 and analyze their associations with geographic, demographic, social, and clinical factors. Methods: Using data from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD), Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, we assessed the age-standardized prevalence, incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of both asthma and AD from 1990 to 2019, stratified by geographic region, age, sex, and socio-demographic index (SDI). DALYs were calculated as the sum of years lived with disability and years of life lost to premature mortality. Additionally, the disease burden of asthma attributable to high body mass index, occupational asthmagens, and smoking was described. Results: In 2019, there were a total of 262 million [95% uncertainty interval (UI): 224–309 million] cases of asthma and 171 million [95% UI: 165–178 million] total cases of AD globally; age-standardized prevalence rates were 3416 [95% UI: 2899–4066] and 2277 [95% UI: 2192–2369] per 100,000 population for asthma and AD, respectively, a 24.1% [95% UI: −27.2 to −20.8] decrease for asthma and a 4.3% [95% UI: 3.8–4.8] decrease for AD compared to baseline in 1990. Both asthma and AD had similar trends according to age, with age-specific prevalence rates peaking at age 5–9 years and rising again in adulthood. The prevalence and incidence of asthma and AD were both higher for individuals with higher SDI; however, mortality and DALYs rates of individuals with asthma had a reverse trend, with higher mortality and DALYs rates in those in the lower SDI quintiles. Abstract

A new Favre averaging method based on gas phase density applied to Eulerian-Eulerian simulations of turbulent multiphase reacting flows is proposed. The new Favre averaging method can reproduce turbulent dispersions of mass, momentum, heat and species of solid phases from their averaged transport equations. A new radiation model that can account for nongray gas-solid mixtures is developed for pulverized coal flames. The new models are validated against a pulverized coal ignition flame. Predictions of velocity, temperature and gas major species are found in good agreement with experiments. Pyrometer measurements of temperature are predicted by a radiation transport calculation. It is found that radiation cooling effects can lead to a 500K temperature decline in solid phases. Radiation also has indirect influence on CO2 predictions through the slow yet strongly temperature-dependent char reaction rates. The consideration of radiation improves predictions of both temperature and CO2 concentrations. Effects of devolatilization model and number of phases are also discussed.

Abstract

We report the detection and polarization of nuclear spins in diamond at room temperature by using a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center. We use Hartmann-Hahn double resonance to coherently enhance the signal from a single nuclear spin while decoupling from the noisy spin-bath, which otherwise limits the detection sensitivity. As a proof-of-principle we: (I) observe coherent oscillations between the NV center and a weakly coupled nuclear spin, (II) demonstrate nuclear bath cooling which prolongs the coherence time of the NV sensor by more than a factor of five. Our results provide a route to nanometer scale magnetic resonance imaging, and novel quantum information processing protocols.

Abstract

The Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) muon subsystem contributes significantly to the formation of the trigger decision and reconstruction of the muon trajectory parameters. Simulation of the RPC response is a crucial part of the entire CMS Monte Carlo software and directly influences the final physical results. An algorithm based on the parametrization of RPC efficiency, noise, cluster size and timing for every strip has been developed. Experimental data obtained from cosmic and proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV have been used for determination of the parameters. A dedicated validation procedure has been developed. Abstract

The CMS GEM collaboration is considering Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) for upgrading the CMS forward muon system in the 1.5<|eta|<2.4 endcap region. GEM detectors can provide precision tracking and fast trigger information. They would improve the CMS muon trigger and muon momentum resolution and provide missing redundancy in the high-eta region. Employing a new faster construction and assembly technique, we built four full-scale Triple-GEM muon detectors for the inner ring of the first muon endcap station. We plan to install these or further improved versions in CMS during the first long LHC shutdown in 2013/14 for continued testing. These detectors are designed for the stringent rate and resolution requirements in the increasingly hostile environments expected at CMS after the second long LHC shutdown in 2018/19. The new prototypes were studied in muon/pion beams at the CERN SPS. We discuss our experience with constructing the new full-scale production prototypes and present preliminary performance results from the beam test. We also tested smaller Triple-GEM prototypes with zigzag readout strips with 2 mm pitch in these beams and measured a spatial resolution of 73 microns. Abstract

Scaling of the anomalous Hall conductivity to longitudinal conductivity, has been observed in the dirty regime of two-dimensional weak and strong localization regions in ultrathin, polycrystalline, chemically disordered, ferromagnetic FePt films. The relationship between electron transport and temperature reveals a quantitatively insignificant Coulomb interaction in these films while the temperature dependent anomalous Hall conductivity experiences quantum correction from electron localization. At the onset of this correction, the low-temperature anomalous Hall resistivity begins to be saturated when the thickness of the FePt film is reduced, and the corresponding Hall conductivity scaling exponent becomes 2, which is above the recent unified theory of 1.6 (\sigma_AH \propto \sigma^1.6_xx). Our results strongly suggest that the correction of the electron localization modulates the scaling exponent of the anomalous Hall effect.

Abstract

The Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are employed in the CMS experiment at the LHC as dedicated trigger system both in the barrel and in the endcap. This note presents results of the RPC detector uniformity and stability during the 2011 data taking period, and preliminary results obtained with 2012 data. The detector uniformity has been ensured with a dedicated High Voltage scan with LHC collisions, in order to determine the optimal operating working voltage of each individual RPC chamber installed in CMS. Emphasis is given on the procedures and results of the High Voltage calibration. Moreover, an increased detector stability has been obtained by automatically taking into account temperature and atmospheric pressure variations in the CMS cavern., Comment: Plenary talk presented at RPC2012. Abstract

The performance of the LHC depends critically on the accurate measurements of the betatron tunes. The betatron tune values of each LHC beam may be measured without excitation using a newly installed transverse Schottky monitor. A high-level software package written in Java has been developed for the Schottky system. The software allows end users to monitor and control the Schottky system, and provides them with non-destructive and continuous bunch-by-bunch measurements for the tunes, momentum spreads, chromaticities and emittances of the LHC beams. Abstract

We investigate the performance of inhomogeneously broadened spin ensembles as quantum memories under continuous dynamical decoupling. The role of the continuous driving field is two-fold: first, it decouples individual spins from magnetic noise; second and more important, it suppresses and reshapes the spectral inhomogeneity of spin ensembles. We show that a continuous driving field, which itself may also be inhomogeneous over the ensemble, can enhance the decay of the tails of the inhomogeneous broadening distribution considerably. This fact enables a spin ensemble based quantum memory to exploit the effect of cavity protection and achieve a much longer storage time. In particular, for a spin ensemble with a Lorentzian spectral distribution, our calculations demonstrate that continuous dynamical decoupling has the potential to improve its storage time by orders of magnitude for the state-of-art experimental parameters.
