Sustainable tourism uses the resources of an area and attempts to create a balance between potential and existing activities. Practical case studies of sustainable tourism are difficult to identify because of the involvement of interrelated variables and dimensions. The study measures the index of sustainability for ecotourism in Lake Kenyir from social, economic, and environmental dimensions. The study follows non-probability convenience sampling design with purposive sampling technique for the sample selection. The study uses 47 indicators under six relationship aspects, namely, resource on community, community on resource, resource on tourism, tourism on resource, tourism on community, and community on tourism to measure the ecotourism sustainability of the study site based on respondent perception. Based on the Barometer of Sustainability, the result demonstrates that Kenyir is classified as 'potential sustainable' ecotourism destination. The study identifies four relationship aspects, namely, resource community, resource tourism, community tourism, and tourism community with potential sustainable level. The community and tourism resources have the poorest sustainability, and fall within the potentially unsustainable level. This work addresses the coexistence of forests with agricultural environments in two areas of the Atlantic Forest in Southeastern Brazil. One is located on Ilha Grande (South coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro) with almost 100% of forest cover, most of which was previously cultivated by caiçaras. The other area is the Pedra Branca Massif (in the West Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro), also covered by secondary forests where there are still some crops. In the latter, we studied the farmers' relationship with the city's growth dynamics. In both cases, the conflicts and peculiarities arising from the coexistence of protected areas with small agricultural communities and the consequences related to the Atlantic Forest dynamics are examined. The recording of these experiences, by means of a long-term interdisciplinary perspective on landscape, can bring new approaches to the processes of co-evolution of human societies with the natural environment. Memory tourism converting war heritage into tourist capital appears to emerge quickly after violent conflicts. This war tourism has an ambiguous role. On the one hand, it can contribute to a reconciliation process by appeasing the memories related to the conflictual past. Yet, on the other hand, if the message imparted by a particular site emphasizes hardships and divergent interpretations of the past, it has the potential of reinforcing existing tensions. Given this ambiguity, the objective of this article is to contribute to the still underdeveloped literature on the topic and to add to a better understanding of tourism as a way of fostering reconciliation. More precisely, through the example of Bosnia and Herzegovina, this contribution aims to highlight the scope and limits of memory tourism in the reconciliation process. To answer this question, the work of two NGOs organizing cross-community visits to sites of memory of each group in the conflict is examined. The results suggest that the dividing or reconciling scope of tourism will eventually depend on its interpretation by the individuals concerned; an interpretation itself influenced by host–visitor relationships and the environment in which they take place. This study investigates the contrasting sceneries of community-based tourism after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and focuses on the potentials of tourism in transformations towards green economies. How are tourism and environment linked in a sustainable relationship? And how can potentials of community-based tourism be directed in transformations towards green economies? A qualitative research design is used to examine contrasting sceneries and specific green elements of community-based tourism in a Qiang people's fortress village in Mao County, Sichuan Province, West China and further discuss how tourism can be compatible with human wellbeing through demonstrating a commitment to sustainable development. The study argues that potential economic, social and environmental costs of tourism need to be considered when evaluating the loss of community benefits toward sustainability. The green elements suggest the potential of community-based tourism in transformations towards green economies, involving green agricultural, green building, and green energy, green governance, green service and green consumption. This study will contribute to the debate about the relationship between tourism and environment sustainability in the green economies, as well as the critique of what can be learned for community development from green tourism in mountainous regions after the inevitable natural disasters. This literature review article aims to identify studies that have been done on the development of community tourism in some countries of Latin America and determine what has been the contribution to improving the quality of life of the communities that have been advanced; this in order to build a framework based on the draft of the ongoing investigation GIRSA assigned to interagency group whose purpose is to promote community tourism as an engine of development for the consolidation of the tourist destinations in the towns of Ciudad Bolivar Usme (rural area) in Bogota. In this sense, the consulted references are to research and developed projects in rural contexts, public organizations, private sector and academia, including from the period from 2006 to 2015 in some Latin American countries. Ideas about collective memory are implicit in tourism development, even when development projects are primarily entertainment-oriented. This paper studies collective memory in the form of community creation myths associated with the transformation of two rural towns from seasonal tourism to casino gaming. Known for their contributions to Colorado mining history, Central City and Black Hawk adopted casino gambling in 1991. This paper presents data from a longitudinal study of creation myth discourses expressed by stakeholders across several decades. Data show that over time, spokespersons more frequently described a nostalgic yearning for earlier mining periods, though the content and form of discourses varied by commentator. Local residents made more emotional appeals, while local leaders’ and external entrepreneurs’ claims were more strategic. This study shows how memory is manipulated, especially during periods of rapid tourism growth, shedding light on under-studied aspects of social and cultural impacts of tourism development. An archaeological project and a community museum in Agua Blanca, Ecuador, have helped catalyse a remarkable process of ecological and cultural awareness complemented by economic advances. Some twenty-five years after the museum’s inauguration, as well as visiting the archaeological site and museum, tourists can observe the Machalilla National Park’s distinctive flora and fauna, camp, hike, swim, stay in village homes, buy locally made handcrafts, and eat in the community restaurant. These initiatives have been set up by the village in collaboration with local, national, and overseas agencies, in ways which spread benefits as widely as possible. After the introduction of a new constitution in 2008, which recognizes the multi-ethnic character of Ecuador’s population, Agua Blanca and adjacent communities asked to be officially recognized as ‘Pueblo Manta’ — an identity derived from the area’s pre-Spanish archaeology. Agua Blanca’s experience shows that much can be achieved through confidence in cultural identity, and that locally managed community tourism brings tangible economic benefits to local people, while serving to protect vulnerable archaeological sites from destruction. Power and trust are two fundamental components of a sustainable and democratic tourism planning process. Yet, tourism research integrating these concepts together has remained virtually silent in the literature. This article adopts Foucault’s theoretical perspectives on power to explain power relationships in tourism at the community level. The discussion suggests that Foucault’s conceptualizations of power, that is, “the omnipresence of power” and “power in (tourism) networks,” are vital for an understanding of the politics of tourism. The article further borrows from the political science literature and emphasizes on trust as another important ingredient of sustainable tourism development. More specifically, the arguments are based on the concept of political trust, conceptualized as citizens’ trust in tourism institutions. The article argues that citizens’ trust in tourism institutions is vital for a democratic tourism planning process. The discussion further suggests that citizens’ power in tourism decision-making and their trust in tourism institutions are vital for gaining their political support for development. Many authors relate tourism to the economic growth of the Occidental countries, for its multipliers effects manifest themselves on the local and regional economy, taking as base the positive impacts in the foreign exchange inflows. In this perspective, the local based tourism, proposes to attribute impacts predominantly positive to tourism, with the increment in the local economy, contributing for the quality life improvement of residents. Understanding the importance of this new kind of tourism, and mainly, the community participation in the making decisions process, was chosen Prainha do Canto Verde, located in the district of Paripueira, in the municipality of Beberibe/CE, 126 km east away from Fortaleza as study object, for being inserted in this reality since the 1990s, when part of the community chose to allow tourism to take part in their lives. It was set as general goal to understand how tourism can contribute for the sustainable community development and as specifics, to check what positive impacts tourism causes in the social and environmental scope. Was chosen the hypothetical-deductive method, based on the assumption that there is tourism and this one benefits some families. The chosen methodology was the application of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and direct observation, in addition to initially use bibliographical research to give basis to the research. The questionnaires were applied to residents who work directly with tourism in the locality, between the months of February and March 2016. The preliminary results point to a tourism that is becoming stronger in the locality, with its managers seeking for to innovate though trying not to lose the community tourism's essence. The purpose of this research was to study and compare the level of Sanan Rak Community Potentiality in tourism Development in terms of their domicile and gender. Quantitative research was carried out by distributing a structured questionnaire with a sample group of 380 among the total area population of 22,278 and statistical tools such as average, standard deviation and t-test were used to analyze the collected data. Thus, the outcome of the study revealed that, in overall, the Community's Potentiality for tourism development is in high level. However the study also found that comparatively, local people who live inside the Sanan Rak Municipal area have higher deliberation in tourism development than people who live outside the area with no statistical significance and also found that males' opinions in community potentiality level in tourism development by Community are higher than females in the statistical significant of .05. Community-based tourism (CBT) offers both opportunities and challenges in the quest for holistic community development. The evolution and development of CBT projects can follow different trajectories. This conceptual paper's main contribution is the formulation of a comprehensive model of the development of CBT. The model suggests that CBT projects can be initiated from within and outside the community by the private, public and non-governmental sectors or a combination of these using a top-down or bottom-up approach. It also posits that CBT projects can take a formal or informal character depending on the conditions leading to their initiation. The paper highlights the benefits and constraints to the scaling up or down of operations linked to informality. It supports further research in analyzing the various aspects associated with the shift from formality to the informality of CBT projects and vice versa and the relationship with CBT development and holistic community development. While the benefits of sustainable tourism such as job creation, income generation and improved quality of life have often attracted many communities to invest in tourism development, frustration generally sets in when the anticipated benefits fail to materialise. Many townships in South Africa can identify with this situation as the success stories of townships such as SOWETO and Khayelitsha have not been successfully replicated in their communities. The purpose of this study is to explore ways of bridging the demand and supply divide as a strategy in the implementation of sustainable community tourism in townships, particularly in the Soshanguve township north of City of Tshwane. The study employs the quantitative methodology in collecting two sets of data; one on visitors (demand-side) expectations of township tourism and the other survey on residents perceptions on the strengths and weaknesses of the Soshanguve township product offering (supply environment). An analysis of the two sets of data reveals both similarities and gaps between the demand-side expectations of township tourism and the Soshanguve township product and supply environment. The recommendations from this study emphasis the importance of incorporating visitors expectations in the tourism development strategy but more importantly, ensuring that the full range of the township product offering is effectively communicated to potential visitors. This is necessary because South African townships are generally misconstrued to offer homogenous heritage and cultural products.

This paper will show how community tourism projects in protected areas can often fail due to both a lack of communication between the different actors and the insufficient integration of the relevant socio-anthropological issues. In the same way as a World Heritage site, the case of Loango National Park in Gabon clearly demonstrates that the original objectives of involvement by and empowerment of the local population are still far from being met. This paper presents an overview of a project initiated by the European Union in 2003, analyses the reasons behind the failure of this project, and suggests strategies to achieve greater consensus among conservation and tourism actors and local populations within the framework of community tourism projects in protected areas.

The Commonwealth of Dominica has one of the most depressed and volatile economies in the Eastern Caribbean due to perennial hurricane damage, depressed agricultural exports, the global recession, and volatile fuel prices. The European Union attempted to fortify their economy with grants to diversify Dominica's tourism market. Yet, little is known about the conditions required to improve the resilience of community tourism in island nations such as Dominica. To fill this gap, we interviewed 25 decision makers regarding the necessary conditions and characteristics of resilient tourism development in Dominica. Interviews focused on social, institutional, economic and ecological resilience dynamics as the island transitions into a tourism economy. In particular this research examined: sustainable tourism development practices; reactivity of communities to internal and external pressures; the importance of social capacities; institutional (governance) design; economic stability; and ecological security. The data created baseline information from community and individual standpoints that provided guidance to enhance tourism products and the resilience of tourism dependent populations. In recent years the province of Salta has strengthened its presence in the Argentine tourist map. This involved, among other things, the increase of tourist offers to enjoy the province of Salta. In this paper, we aim to address tourist diversity in Salta, especially observing how the Calchaquíes Valleys, a traditional destination in the Argentine northwest, is redefined through new attractions and tourist services based on some local distinctive features. This work specifically approaches the way in which the tourist proposal in this area is renewed considering the creation of a rural and touristic organization-the Rural Tourism Network-that offers tourist services under the form of community-based tourism. It also aims at focusing attention on the social and territorial changes that the presence of this new actor, central to the diversification of tourist options in this destination, has introduced into the local scene. This article is conceptual based on a perusal of academic journal articles and books on matters related to Community-based Tourism (CBT). It contends that CBT is a very important tool for local economic development, community development, empowerment and the attainment of social justice. It observes disparities between rich and poor countries in terms of endowments and how the multiple dimensions of poverty can confound how tourism can be experienced in different contexts. It posits an eight Es model which represents the fundamental pillars upon which to judge a CBT for purposes of support, monitoring and evaluation. The eight E are Endogenous (emphasising a reliance on local resources); Environment - (reflecting the importance of caring for the environment, and broader environmental conditions and infrastructure); Education - (to advance skills and education); Empowerment - (which embraces economic, psychological, social and political empowerment); Equity - (for equitable distribution and re-distribution of both benefits and resources); Evolving - (always improving and changing to take advantage of dynamic opportunities); Enduring - (for long term sustainability) and supporting Entrepreneurship - (for innovation, creativity and viability). The framework/model is also significant as it provides a common ground upon which the understanding of CBT could be carried at international and national level. The paper has twin but related objectives. It examines the origins of the concept of theme villages in creating new rural tourism experiences and explores issues in the implementation of the concept. It also discusses the role of community involvement in theme village development, probing and testing existing models of local participation in tourism development in the context of five thematic villages in Poland. The five-year research project based on participatory action research covered the entire process of forming thematic rural tourist products. Five years later its effectiveness and sustainability was measured by a follow-up study. As a result, a seven-step community-created sustainable rural tourism development model is proposed. Local involvement in creating thematic villages is much more intensive and has such a wide scope that one cannot speak of facilitating or involving a community in the development process, but rather of tourism development creation by local communities. However, the social focus and inward-oriented perspective of community tourism can hamper effective adaptation of local resources to suit market needs and thus prevent the sustainable growth of community linked rural tourism. This article examines the growth of Community-Based Tourism within the broader discipline of tourism. New topics in the field have emerged such as responsible tourism, pro-poor tourism, sports tourism and moral impacts of tourism. This phenomenon also reflects the multi-disciplinarity of tourism. In this article, using the Title, Abstract and Keywords (TAK) for instances in which the words (Community-based Tourism, Community Tourism and Community-Based Eco-Tourism) to subsume Community-Based Tourism (CBT), a search was made in various databases and found that CBT as a sub-specialty of tourism started to emerge in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The number of articles published specifically on CBT has been growing phenomenally. The major contribution of this article is that we now know the evolution of CBT and we also now know its trajectory of growth which has been upward. Understanding the origins of Community Based Tourism helps in mapping its possible trajectories. Past and current trends are important to unlock the possibilities in the future. This paper posits that with a better understanding of the original conceptualization, practices and roles of CBT, possibilities will abound to understand contemporary CBT matters. It argues that since its origins to current times, the CBT approach has endured a significant mismatch from the original aims and strategies of CBT in terms of practical approaches and outcomes. The hallmarks of a genuine CBT project include local control (rather than mere involvement), decision making at all the stages of the project's life cycle, equitable sharing of the collective benefits, within the context of a holistic, bottom-up approach to community development. Rural areas are experiencing major socio-economic changes with a need to transform and diversify rural livelihoods. In this context, tourism industry is increasingly used as a tool for local development with an aim to facilitate participation and integration of communities in tourism planning and operations. This study explores the development of community-based cultural and heritage tourism, utilizing the integrated rural tourism (IRT) as a guiding framework. The paper relies on the results of a qualitative study carried out in and around the village of Kalakamati in the North-East District of Botswana. In-depth interviews were carried out with selected respondents associated with Mantenge, Domboshaba and Gandanyemba heritage sites. Based on the interview results, the paper argues that IRT can be a useful tool in assessing development of rural tourism in the country but needs to be carefully contextualized in developing countries situations. A manifestation of early destination development, Community-Based Tourism (CBT) enterprises have been emerging across Timor-Leste as a rural development strategy. In the context of this fledgling and oil revenue dependent nation, CBT enterprises will need to overcome various challenges if they are to fulfil their potential. The present paper explores stakeholder perceptions towards the prospective shape and structure of a nationwide CBT network using a multi-stage qualitative research approach. Respondents broadly agreed that a CBT network can support the development of tourism and help enterprises to confront the challenges of deficient knowledge, funding and marketing, prospectively improving rural livelihoods. The researchers consider neo-colonial, social economy and community development perspectives when applying the prospective CBT model in a resource dependent developing country setting. Today's world is characterized by variations, which gains value knowledge, imagination and exchanges; therefore, in this new vision tourist destinations they are forced to generate and evaluate new ideas constantly value to others, so should demonstrate their capacity to adapt to these new demands; It arises and community tourism as one of the activities which route to sustainable development. Meanwhile, Ecuador has a high natural and cultural diversity, which have not been adequately exploited by tourist operators that make use of local labor and generating in itself a genuine sustainable development for communities. Consistent with the above, the aim of the research is to design a process for integrated management and sustainable community tourism in line with the principles of international cooperative and collaboration between the parties that interact in community tourism, and validate it by its practical application in the Arajuno in Pastaza province, Ecuador's Amazon region. Community tourism appears to be an alternative that mitigates the negative effects of mass tourism in less developed countries. In this kind of tourism, the attitudes and perceptions of residents play an important role in tourism planning and development. In this article, we analyze the perceptions and attitudes of residents in community tourism in the Island of Santo Antão (Cape Verde), an emerging tourist destination that is currently experiencing a considerable increase of tourists--which is altering the way of life of its communities. The fieldwork was carried out based on a survey of residents. The questionnaire was filled out by a random sample of respondents, with a total of 319 questionnaires obtained. The main results reveal that residents are in favor of tourism development, due to the positive benefits that it can bring, such as the recovery of traditional handicrafts, more investment in infrastructures, and higher quality hospitality and retail establishments. However, in order for tourism on the island to be sustainable and for the residents' perceived benefits to materialize, tourism initiatives need more participation by local residents, public administrators, universities, and nongovernmental organizations. With the increased influence of economic diversion, globalization, and distress, tourism has been a popular choice for communities seeking to enhance local economies, respond to changing social and environmental conditions, and strive for new benchmarks. That being said, with changes accelerating, and global patterns becoming all the more tumultuous the field needs to embrace a new ways of creating sustainable positive change. One area that can benefit this field community tourism development greatly is the study of the connection between types of leadership and effects on follower engagement. The study of the relationships between leaders and followers is important and between charismatic leaders and followers offers key insights. Charismatic leaders are capable of developing effective, or ineffective, relationships with their followers. They also can either foster, or discourage, civic, or community, engagement – which is critical to the growth of networks, or social capital, in their communities. The research investigates proprietary ways for creating that intersect between tourism and leadership through a teaching case study in order to take the field to the next level of success. The case study of San Luis Colorado provokes learners to analyze and reflect upon charismatic leadership and its effects. The researchers explore the role of leadership in community tourism and the need to integrate this into tourism curricula to build awareness of leadership theory in students and assist practitioners by creating a foundation of new knowledge in the field. Whale-watching is one of the fastest growing tourism industries worldwide, often viewed as a sustainable, non-consumptive strategy for the benefits of cetacean conservation and the coastal communities, alternative to and incompatible with whaling. Yet, there is paucity of research on how things actually work out at the community-level. Drawing on the research literature and my own ethnographic fieldwork, this article bridges a knowledge gap in this field while examining an Azorean context where tourism has brought a re-commodification of the whale for the community (observing wildlife as opposed to harpooning it) in the last 20 years. The analysis is focused on four main community-level implications: governance of common maritime resources, and tourism's contribution to economic sustainability, cultural identity and social relations. It is shown that whale-watching, as any other form of community-based ecotourism, is not a panacea that always promotes biodiversity conservation and economic and sociocultural sustainability for the host communities. Moreover, expanding on the theorisation of emerging institutional fields by Lawrence and Phillips, the political, historical, economic and sociocultural context of the community involved is a key factor for understanding local agency and the local specific features of new fields. Manzanillo is one of the most important municipal of the state of Colima, situated on the pacific coast of Mexico. It is well known as sand, sea and sun destination for national and international tourist. However, surrounding this location there are many agricultural communities in the rural zone. Habillal is a place which is very rich in natural resources and own just by one person, which does not live in Habillal neither. In 2000 the government of the municipal of Manzanillo gave economy help to the owner to do a tourism project, in which the rural communities around Habillal would get benefits of it, but unfortunately it didn't work because of the lack of advice from the government to this project so this place has been abandoned until now. The owner of Habillal and the people from the communities surrounding have an interest to take advantage of the natural recourses. Community tourism with the participation from local population is an alternative to reestablish this project for improving the commoners' quality of life and economic by using the natural recourses sustainably. The methodology used was corporate capacities as it was necessary to assess the participation of the communities by the collective capacity by its three indicators; instrumental capacity, systemic capacity and the last one is organizational capacity to know the level of local participation and possibility to perform the tourist activities.
