Abstract

We demonstrate the generation of multimode entangled states of propagating microwaves. The entangled states are generated by our parametrically pumping a multimode superconducting cavity. By combining different pump frequencies, applied simultaneously to the device, we can produce different entanglement structures in a programable fashion. The Gaussian output states are fully characterized by our measuring the full covariance matrices of the modes. The covariance matrices are absolutely calibrated by our using an in situ microwave calibration source, a shot-noise tunnel junction. Applying a variety of entanglement measures, we demonstrate both full inseparability and genuine tripartite entanglement of the states. Our method is easily extensible to more modes.

Abstract

Genetic variation was examined in two complex cases of Indo-Pacific pygmy angelfishes (genus Centropyge; Pomacanthidae). The lemonpeel pygmy angelfish C. flavissima (Cuvier and Valenciennes) has a geographically disjunct Indian vs. Pacific distribution and the individuals from these two regions differ by their colour patterns. Previous research on C. flavissima has shown mitochondrial introgression from two related species, C. eibli in the eastern Indian Ocean and C. vrolikii in the Pacific Ocean. Using the 16S rDNA and the CO1 gene as phylogeographic markers, we found no mitochondrial haplotypes in common between Indian Ocean C. flavissima and C. eibli, confirming partial genetic isolation, albeit recent. Also, we found substantial genetic differences between Indian and Pacific C. flavissima populations at the nuclear ETS-2 intron locus. The Indian Ocean form of C. flavissima, thus geographically isolated by > 2000 km distance from its Pacific Ocean counterpart, is described as a new species, Centropyge cocosensis sp. nov. Centropyge cocosensis sp. nov. differs in appearance from C. flavissima in having a conspicuous blue iris and a fainter, bluish eye ring. We also found that the yellow pygmy angelfish C. heraldi Woods and Schultz consists of two genetically distinct entities, one distributed widely in the northern tropical Indo-West Pacific, the other distributed in the southern Pacific Ocean. The name originally given to the blackfin pygmy angelfish, C. woodheadi Kuiter, is here resurrected to designate the latter.

181. Cartesian-based control of a deformable robot manipulator

Abstract

A control scheme for the 6-DOF Cincinnati-Milacron T3 robot arm is developed and demonstrated by means of numerical simulations. The arm is modeled as an open-loop articulated system with both actuators and position and velocity sensors at each joint, and a Cartesian-frame control algorithm is constructed in which (1) an adaptive scheme decouples the end-effector subsystem from the complex highly nonlinear main system and (2) a servo scheme drives the reduced system to follow a presumed end-effector trajectory on the basis of the Cartesian-frame feedback gains. The velocity transformation used to transfer the control forces from the Cartesian frame to joint-based space is explained, and the simulation results are presented in extensive graphs and diagrams. The control is found to respond well to system-topology changes and robot-environment impacts.

Abstract

Massive spalling of intermetallic compounds has been reported in the literature for several solder/substrate systems, including SnAgCu soldered on Ni substrate, SnZn on Cu, high-Pb PbSn on Cu, and high-Pb PbSn on Ni. In this work, a unified thermodynamic argument is proposed to explain this rather unusual phenomenon. According to this argument, two necessary conditions must be met. The number one condition is that at least one of the reactive constituents of the solder must be present in a limited amount, and the second condition is that the soldering reaction has to be very sensitive to its concentration. With the growth of intermetallic, more and more atoms of this constituent are extracted out of the solder and incorporated into the intermetallic. As the concentration of this constituent decreases, the original intermetallic at the interface becomes a nonequilibrium phase, and the spalling of the original intermetallic occurs. Abstract

Electromigration has been characterized in via-terminated interconnect lines with additional vias in the middle, creating two adjacent segments that can be stressed independently. The mortality of a segment was found to depend on the direction and magnitude of the current in the adjacent segment, confirming that there is not a fixed value of the product of the current density and segment length, jL, that defines immortality in individual segments that are part of a multisegment interconnect tree. Instead, it is found that the probability of failure of a multisegment tree increases with the increasing value of an effective jL product defined in earlier work. However, contrary to expectations, the failures were still observed when (jL)eff was less than the critical jL product for which lines were found to be immortal in single-segment test structures. It is argued that this is due to reservoir effects associated with unstressed segments or due to liner failure at the central via. Multisegment test structures are therefore shown to reveal more types of failure mechanisms and mortality conditions that are not found in tests with single-segment structures. Abstract

Current–voltage (I–V) relations of Nd[sub 0.5](Ca,Sr)[sub 0.5]MnO[sub 3] are investigated near its percolation threshold. Resistivity and I–V relations reveal the unstable nature of Nd[sub 0.5](Ca,Sr)[sub 0.5]MnO[sub 3]. A large slope change in the I–V curve is observable for low (I<15 mA) applied current by manipulating the applied magnetic field at 85 K. Our results indicate that the external applied current can assist not only an insulator to metal transition but also a metal to insulator transition. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

We demonstrate the full functionality of a circuit that generates single microwave photons on demand, with a wave packet that can be modulated with a near-arbitrary shape. We achieve such a high tunability by coupling a superconducting qubit near the end of a semi-infinite transmission line. A dc superconducting quantum interference device shunts the line to ground and is employed to modify the spatial dependence of the electromagnetic mode structure in the transmission line. This control allows us to couple and decouple the qubit from the line, shaping its emission rate on fast time scales. Our decoupling scheme is applicable to all types of superconducting qubits and other solid-state systems and can be generalized to multiple qubits as well as to resonators., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

Abstract

The Leopard whipray (Himantura leoparda) and Blue-spotted stingray (Neotrygon kuhlii) are distributed in the Indian and West Pacific Ocean and considered as complex species based on morphological and molecular evidences. In this study, we used the next-generation sequencing method to decode two complete mitogenomes of H. leoparda and N. kuhlii. The assembled mitogenome, consisting lengths of 17,690 bp for H. leoparda and 17,974 bp for N. kuhlii, shows 78% identity to each other. Both mitogenomes follow the typical vertebrate arrangement, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs genes and a non-coding control region of D-loop. D-loop with the lengths 1931 bp (H. leoparda) and 2243 bp (N. kuhlii) is located between tRNA-Pro and tRNA-Phe. The overall GC content is 40.3% for H. leoparda and 39.8% for N. kuhlii. The complete mitogenome of H. leoparda and N. kuhlii provides essential and important DNA molecular data for further phylogenetic and evolutionary analyses for stingray species complex.

198. Spawning segregation and philopatry are major prezygotic barriers in sympatric cryptic Mugil cephalus species

Abstract

The flathead mullet, Mugil cephalus, is a commercially vital fish in fisheries and aquaculture worldwide. Genetic analyses have recently revealed three cryptic species of M. cephalus in the Northwest Pacific. These species are sympatric in Taiwanese waters and specific reproductive behaviors have been suggested to be a major prezygotic barrier. Species composition was evaluated in samples of M. cephalus at different growth stages collected from various habitats (offshore spawning ground, estuarine nursery and feeding areas) over several months or years. The gonadosomatic index of adults and the body length of juveniles were recorded to determine the reproductive season and recruitment periods in estuaries. The results revealed partially temporal spawning isolation between species pairs, spatial segregation on specific spawning grounds and strong philopatry preclude hybridization. Thus, the results imply that traditional fisheries of mature fish in the Taiwan Strait target only one species, whereas aquaculture in Taiwan contain juveniles of all three species collected in estuaries. The ecological niche and demography of these species must be investigated further to estimate the impact of juvenile sources on aquaculture.
