Abstract

The immune system in the aging man is known to show age-related defects; the study of the subpopulations in human blood has yielded conflicting results. This mostly seems to be due to the heterogeneity of the subjects admitted to immunogerontological studies. We investigated a group of aged persons fulfilling the admission criteria described in the "SENIEUR" protocol and strictness criteria dietetics. We found a decrease in the number of T cells, while the number of B cells and, above all, the report of the T4/T8 remained constant. There individuals should be considered as optimally healthy and immunologically uncompromised.

Abstract

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted to evaluate the safety and clinical efficacy of nitrendipine in the treatment of isolated systolic hypertension in elderly patients. The subjects were 20 elderly patients with isolated systolic hypertension who received 20 mg of nitrendipine or placebo daily for 60 days. In the nitrendipine-treated patients, both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were reduced significantly during treatment (from a mean of 180 to 155 mmHg and 92 to 80 mmHg); heart rate did not change significantly. Standard laboratory test results did not change in either group during treatment and results of a posttreatment oral glucose tolerance test were similar in the two treatment groups.

Abstract

Measurement of the optic nerve diameter by echographic technique has been performed in 40 patients with intracranial hypertension syndromes of various origin. In all the cases examined the diameter was always increased. Postoperative checks revealed a decrease of the nerve thickness until it reached the normal values. The changes in the optic nerve diameter reflect the variations of the intracranial pressure and they appear earlier than any changes in the fundus oculi. This simple and non-invasive echographic technique is very useful in following patients with an intracranial hypertension syndrome.

196. Morning glory syndrome associated with marked persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous and lens colobomas.

Abstract

A case of morning glory syndrome with striking persistence of primary vitreous is presented. The hypothesis that the syndrome is an expression of abnormal closure of the embryonic fissure is substantiated by the coexistence of lens colobomas. Furthermore, the marked primary vitreous hyperplasia shows the way in which persistence of primary vitreous influences the clinical expression with respect to optic pit and colobomas of the optic nerve.
