Abstract

In this paper, we present preliminary scientific results obtained from the analysis of VIMS (Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer) lunar images and spectra. These data were obtained during the Cassini Earth flyby in August 1999. Spectral ratios have been produced in order to derive lunar mineralogical maps. Some spectra observed at the north-east lunar limb, show few unusual absorption features located at 0.357, 0.430 and 0.452 ìm, the origin of which is presently unknown.

Abstract

During the Cassinimission the Saturnian moons Dione and Tethys showed intriguing and multiple clues suggesting residual geologic activity that might be detectable as an atmosphere, plume, or even heat signature. These clues included an atmospheric aura around Dione, injection of particles into Saturn's magnetosphere, mysterious red streaks on Tethys, and possible cryovolcanic features on Dione. A concerted effort that was strengthened in the latter stages of the mission included the acquisition of stellar occulations by the Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) of both Dione and Tethys and high solar phase observations of Dione by the Visible Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) to detect forward scattering from grains in a plume. Analysis of these observations shows no evidence for even a low level of activity on either moon. In addition, infrared images at 2.65 μm obtained throughout the mission were scrutinized for the reappearance of an atmosphere‐like aura, with negative results. Two moons of Saturn, Dione and Tethys, showed intriguing clues suggesting residual geologic activity on their surfaces throughout the Cassinimission. A close inspection of data from the ultraviolet and visible/infrared imagers on Cassini failed to detect an atmosphere or plume on either moon. Abstract

The results of Voyager 2 photopolarimetry (PPS) surveys of Uranus, the ring system, occultation experiments and observations of the Uranian moons are reported. Dual-channel photometry and polarimetry data obtained of the atmosphere at various emission and phase angles are delineated and compared with characteristics of the Saturn and Jupiter atmospheres. The results of temperature, UV absorption and density profile calculations are also discussed. Extensive ring dimensional data, based on two occultation experiments, are provided in tabular form noting that the rings contain no dust. Finally, the geometric albedos of the five major moons and the phase curve of the moon Titania are presented. The latter data indicate that Titanian surface features are not the result of recent events such as volcanism or ice slurry outflows.

164. Photometry of rough planetary surfaces - The role of multiple scattering

Abstract

Topographic features affect the scattering properties of planetary surfaces by casting shadows and altering the local incidence and emission angles. Measurements of this phenomenon were obtained on the Cornell goniometer for both high and low albedo surfaces. For the low albedo surface, the decrease in reflected radiation due to topography increases sharply with increasing phase angle, whereas for the high albedo sample the effects are approximately constant between phase angles of 30 and 70 deg. The observations are in good agreement with a theoretical model in the case of the dark surface. However, for the high albedo surface the model overestimates the effects by a factor of 2, since it does not include the partial illumination of shadows by multiple scattering. For both high and low albedo surfaces, the effects of topography do not become significant until a phase angle of 30-40 deg.

Abstract

The first eclipses between Pluto and its satellite ('Charon') were detected in January and February 1985, confirming the satellite's existence. Eclipses lasting a few hours will now occur at 3.20 day intervals for the next 5 to 6 years and then will cease for about 120 years. Careful observations of these eclipses will allow greatly improved determinations to be made of several physical parameters for the Pluto-Charon system: the diameters of the planet and satellite, the surface albedo distribution on one hemisphere of the planet, the orbit of the satellite, and the mass of the planet and hence its density. Knowledge of the density will provide a constraint on models of Pluto's bulk composition.

166. Photometric Analysis of Jupiter-illuminated Images of Io

Abstract

Several sequences of the dark (Jupiter-illuminated) side of Io obtained during the Voyager 2 encounter present opporunity for understanding several problems relating to the surface composition of Io. The existence or absence of SO2 condensates on the night side is a sensitive indicator of an SO2 atmosphere. Preliminary analysis of the night side Io images suggests localized brightenings of approximately 25% may exist. Examination of the night side images represents an even more sensitive indicator for pure sulfur. Between 60 and 130 degrees (the minimum nighttime and maximum daytime temperatures, respectively), the relative spectral reflectance for yellow sulfur observed in the Voyager green and clear filters decreases by 25%. This decrease should be detectable on the nightside images. A search of the Voyager 2 Jupiter-illuminated images yielded a single pair of green and clear images. In these images one hemisphere of Io is Sun-illuminated and the other is Jupiter illuminated. Geologically similar regions of Io are being selected to obtain average color ratios of specific geologic units for both day and night sides.

167. Application of a radiative transfer model to bright icy satellites

Abstract

A radiative transfer model, derived largely from the work of Hapke (1981) and Goguen (1981), is fit to Voyager imaging observations of Europa, Mimas, Enceladus, and Rhea. It is possible to place constraints on the single-scattering albedo, the porosity of the optically active upper regolith, the single-particle phase function, and, in the cases of Europa and Mimas, the mean-slope angle of macroscopic surface features. The texture of the surfaces of the Saturnian satellites appears to be similar to the earth's moon. However, Europa is found to have a distinctly more compact regolith and a more forward-scattering single-particle phase function.

Abstract

The scattering properties of the surfaces of airless bodies were observed. These properties are controlled primarily by the following physical parameters: the single scattering albedo, the single particle phase function, the porosity of the upper regolith, and large scale roughness. Comparison of the observations with scattering models reveals both similarities and differences among the airless bodies in the solar system. The textural characteristics of the regolithms of icy satellites appear to be generally similar to those of the Moon and Mercury; differences in the scattering functions are attributed to albedo alone. A notable exception is Europa, which has a much more compact regolith. Io has an especially porous regolith, with void space of about 90%. Although the solar phase curves of the Moon and Mercury are similar, Mercury's phase curve drops off less rapidly at solar phase angles greater than 100 degrees. It is suggested that the Moon is rougher at scales larger than a few mm.

169. Voyager disk resolved photometry of the Saturnian satellites

Abstract

The scattering properties of the icy satellites of Saturn are studied. Scans of intensity along the photometric equator near opposition are analyzed, and disk-resolved measurements of intensity are fitted to simple photometric functions. Histograms of the albedo distribution across the satellite disks are constructed, and the geometric albedos are determined as a function of wavelength. It is found that, at low phase angles, Rhea and Dione closely follow lunar behavior with almost no limb darkening. Mimas, Tethys, and especially Enceladus show significant limb darkening at low phase angles, which suggest multiple scattering is important for their surfaces. No satellite's surface can be described by Lambert's law. The darker satellites are redder, and the darker areas of each satellite are redder. A longitudinal dark stripe which represents a 15 percent decrease in albedo is situated near the center of the trailing side of Tethys. Mimas and Enceladus both have remarkably flat spectral reflectances into the ultraviolet.

Abstract

Images of active regions obtained with the grazing-incidence X-ray telescope aboard Skylab during the 20-min period preceding eight small X-ray flares are used to investigate the X-ray morphology of the preflare state of the active regions for any evidence of flare buildup. Not a single case is found where preflare brightening occurred in and only in the region which subsequently flared. For two events, no changes in the X-ray morphology of the preflare active region were noted up to within 2 min of the flare onset. Thus, no systematic evidence is found for a preflare buildup in any of these eight events.

Abstract

The New Horizons spacecraft observed Jupiters icy satellites Europa and Ganymede during its flyby in February and March 2007 at visible and infrared wavelengths. Infrared spectral images map H2O ice absorption and hydrated contaminants, bolstering the case for an exogenous source of Europas ‘non-ice’ surface material and filling large gaps in compositional maps of Ganymedes Jupiter-facing hemisphere. Visual wavelength images of Europa extend knowledge of its global pattern of arcuate troughs and show that its surface scatters light more isotropically than other icy satellites. Abstract

Titan is the only satellite in our Solar System with a dense atmosphere. The surface pressure is 1.5 bar (ref. 1) and, similar to the Earth, N2 is the main component of the atmosphere. Methane is the second most important component, but it is photodissociated on a timescale of 107 years (ref. 3). This short timescale has led to the suggestion that Titan may possess a surface or subsurface reservoir of hydrocarbons to replenish the atmosphere. Here we report near-infrared images of Titan obtained on 26 October 2004 by the Cassini spacecraft. The images show that a widespread methane ocean does not exist; subtle albedo variations instead suggest topographical variations, as would be expected for a more solid (perhaps icy) surface. We also find a circular structure∼30 km in diameter that does not resemble any features seen on other icy satellites. We propose that the structure is a dome formed by upwelling icy plumes that release methane into Titan's atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The wide spectral coverage and extensive spatial, temporal, and phase-angle mapping capabilities of the Visual Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) onboard the Cassini-Huygens Orbiter are producing fundamental new insights into the nature of the atmospheres of Saturn and Titan. For both bodies, VIMS maps over time and solar phase angles provide information for a multitude of atmospheric constituents and aerosol layers, providing new insights into atmospheric structure and dynamical and chemical processes. For Saturn, salient early results include evidence for phosphine depletion in relatively dark and less cloudy belts at temperate and mid-latitudes compared to the relatively bright and cloudier Equatorial Region, consistent with traditional theories of belts being regions of relative downwelling. Additional Saturn results include (1) the mapping of enhanced trace gas absorptions at the south pole, and (2) the first high phase-angle, high-spatial-resolution imagery of CH4fluorescence. An additional fundamental new result is the first nighttime near-infrared mapping of Saturn, clearly showing discrete meteorological features relatively deep in the atmosphere beneath the planet’s sunlit haze and cloud layers, thus revealing a new dynamical regime at depth where vertical dynamics is relatively more important than zonal dynamics in determining cloud morphology. Zonal wind measurements at deeper levels than previously available are achieved by tracking these features over multiple days, thereby providing measurements of zonal wind shears within Saturn’s troposphere when compared to cloudtop movements measured in reflected sunlight. For Titan, initial results include (1) the first detection and mapping of thermal emission spectra of CO, CO2, and CH3D on Titan’s nightside limb, (2) the mapping of CH4fluorescence over the dayside bright limb, extending to ∼ ∼750 km altitude, (3) wind measurements of ∼ ∼0.5 ms−1, favoring prograde, from the movement of a persistent (multiple months) south polar cloud near 88° S latitude, and (4) the imaging of two transient mid-southern-latitude cloud features.

184. The Deep Space 1 Encounter with Comet 19p/Borrelly

Abstract

NASA's Deep Space 1 (DS1) spacecraft successfully encountered comet 19P/Borrelly near perihelion and the Miniature Integrated Camera and Spectrometer (MICAS) imaging system onboard DS1 returned the first high-resolution images of a Jupiter-family comet nucleus and surrounding environment. The images span solar phase angles from 88° to 52°, providing stereoscopic coverage of the dust coma and nucleus. Numerous surface features are revealed on the 8-km long nucleus in the highest resolution images(47–58 m pixel). A smooth, broad basin containing brighter regions and mesa-likestructures is present in the central part of the nucleus that seems to be the source ofjet-like dust features seen in the coma. High ridges seen along the jagged terminator lead to rugged terrain on both ends of the nucleus containing dark patches and smaller series of parallel grooves. No evidence of impact craters with diameters larger thanabout 200-m are present, indicating a young and active surface. The nucleus is very dark with albedo variations from 0.007 to 0.035. Short-wavelength, infrared spectra from 1.3 to 2.6 μm revealed a hot, dry surface consistent with less than about10% actively sublimating. Two types of dust features are seen: broad fans and highlycollimated “jets” in the sunward hemisphere that can be traced to the surface. The source region of the main jet feature, which resolved into at least three smaller “jets” near the surface, is consistent with an area around the rotation pole that is constantly illuminated by the sun during the encounter. Within a few nuclear radii, entrained dustis rapidly accelerated and fragmented and geometrical effects caused from extended source regions are present, as evidenced in radial intensity profiles centered on the jet features that show an increase in source strength with increasing cometocentric distance. Asymmetries in the dust from dayside to nightside are pronounced and may show evidence of lateral flow transporting dust to structures observed in the nightside coma. A summary of the initial results of the Deep Space 1 Mission is provided, highlighting the new knowledge that has been gained thus far.

Abstract

Saturn's moon Enceladus emits a plume of water vapour and micrometre-sized ice particles from a series of warm fissures located near its south pole. This geological activity could be powered or controlled by variations in the tidal stresses experienced by Enceladus as it moves around its slightly eccentric orbit. The specific mechanisms by which these varying stresses are converted into heat, however, are still being debated. Furthermore, it has proved difficult to find a clear correlation between the predicted tidal forces and measured temporal variations in the plume's gas content or the particle flux from individual sources. Here we report that the plume's horizontally integrated brightness is several times greater when Enceladus is near the point in its eccentric orbit where it is furthest from Saturn (apocentre) than it is when near the point of closest approach to the planet (pericentre). More material therefore seems to be escaping from beneath Enceladus' surface at times when geophysical models predict its fissures should be under tension and therefore may be wider open. 186. Pluto in Glory: Discovery of Its Huge Opposition Surge

Abstract

Near‐infrared observations of the Pluto Charon system were captured with the Palomar High Angular Resolution Observer (PHARO) adaptive optics (AO) system on the 200‐inch Hale telescope during the historically small solar phase angles in 2018–2019. Both objects exhibit large opposition surges of ∼30%–35% in the last half degree of solar phase angle, which is among the largest observed for icy moons and other Kuiper Belt Objects. In addition, Pluto's surge is exceptionally steep. Pluto's unusual phase curve may be due to an unusual surface texture caused by seasonal volatile transport and active geologic processes. These observations enable accurate determination of Pluto's geometric albedo in the JHK filter system, which we find to be 0.86 ± 0.04, 0.59 ± 0.05, and 0.39 ± 0.04 for Pluto, respectively, and 0.68 ± 0.06 for Charon in the J filter. The New Horizonsspacecraft revealed Pluto to be a geologically active, complex world. It never observed small solar phase angles, when the disk of Pluto is fully illuminated. In 2018 and 2019, Pluto reached a historically small solar phase angle that will not be repeated for 161 years. Observations at Palomar Observatory show that both hemispheres of Pluto, as well as its main moon Charon, exhibit a surge of over 30% in brightness at opposition, suggesting an unusual surface texture due to activity and volatile transport. Abstract

We obtained R-band photometry of 433 Eros at the Table Mountain 0.6-m telescope during its 1998 apparition. Our five nights of photometry yields a rotational period Psid=5.27048±0.00064 h and visual geometric albedo for 433 Eros of 0.27+0.03−0.06, high, but within the range of S-type asteroids. Utilizing lightcurve data from the 1974/1975 apparition we solved for rotational pole position (RA=00:46.9, DEC=+19:30.5; J2000) and axial ratios of 1.0:0.388:0.375, which are both significantly different from previously derived values.

Abstract

Hyperion, Saturn’s eighth largest icy satellite, is a body of irregular shape in a state of chaotic rotation. The surface is segregated into two distinct units. A spatially dominant high-albedo unit having the strong signature of H2O ice contrasts with a unit that is about a factor of four lower in albedo and is found mostly in the bottoms of cup-like craters. Here we report observations of Hyperion’s surface in the ultraviolet and near-infrared spectral regions with two optical remote sensing instruments on the Cassini spacecraft at closest approach during a fly-by on 25–26 September 2005. The close fly-by afforded us the opportunity to obtain separate reflectance spectra of the high- and low-albedo surface components. The low-albedo material has spectral similarities and compositional signatures that link it with the surface of Phoebe and a hemisphere-wide superficial coating on Iapetus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
