159. Experimental and theoretical study of the broadening and shifting of N2H+ rotational lines by helium

Abstract

Pressure broadening and pressure shift of N2H+ rotational lines perturbed by collisions with He are studied for the first time using experiment and theory. Results are reported from measurements at 88 K for the rotational transitions j = 3-2, 4-3, 5-4 and 6-5 with frequencies ranging from 0.28 to 0.56 THz. The agreement between experiment and theoretical data derived from close coupling calculations confirms the reliability of a theoretical framework used for state-to-state transition rates of interest in the interpretation of spectroscopic data from interstellar molecular clouds. The influence of hyperfine effects on shifts and widths of the rotational lines is discussed in detail. Although in principle possible, experiment and theoretical considerations lead to the conclusion that hyperfine effects only play a minor role.

Abstract

The rates of rotational transitions for HCO+, the most abundant ion in interstellar space, induced by collision with helium are obtained for temperatures ranging from 10 to 80 K. The calculations are based on a new potential energy surface for the He-HCO+ interaction and on a scattering matrix whose accuracy was checked by pressure broadening and shift measurements. The rates qjj' decrease for increasing values of j and j', with a temperature trend depending on the energy involved in the transitions: if it is small, the rates are almost constant, while an increase with T is found for other cases. Comparison with previous and less accurate results shows an agreement within 50 per cent. Comparison between state-to-state and pressure broadening cross-sections allows us to discuss importance and influence of elastic and inelastic collisions.

Abstract

It is well established that water plays a fundamental role in various atmospheric phenomena and that the accuracy of its collisional broadening parameters has a crucial influence on reduction of remote sensing data. Nevertheless, in this field the experimental data are still scarce and consequently the estimates reported in spec- troscopic databases are not always reliable and/or accurate. In the view of filling this gap, the self-, N2- and O2-broadening parameters of the J = 1,1,1 - 0,0,0 rota- tional transition of water (1.113 THz) have been determined at room temperature. The experimental investigation has also been supported by theoretical calculations.

164. Experimental and Theoretical Study of Helium Broadening and Shift of HCO+ Rotational Lines

Abstract

An experimental and theoretical study of pressure broadening and pressure shift of HCO+ rotational lines perturbed by collisions with He is presented. Results are reported from measurements at 88 K for the lines j=4 !3, 5 !4 and 6 !5 with frequencies ranging from 0.35 to 0.54 THz. Using a new CCSD(T)/aug-ccpVQZ potential energy surface for the He-HCO+ interaction, the collisional line shape parameters are studied from fully quantum and semiclassical calculations. Results from the quantum treatment are in satisfactory agreement with experiments whereas the semiclassical approach can lead to appreciable differences. A study of the dependence of line width G and shift s as a function of the translational energy shows the presence of quantum oscillations. Calculations on a previous Hartree-Fock-based potential energy surface lead to quite similar results for the collisional line shape parameters. Using a simplified version of the potential morphing method it is found that the line width G is particularly sensitive to the long-range part of the potential energy surface. This also explains the success of the first line-broadening calculations which date back to the 1950s.

Abstract

A widespread usage of aluminum alloys for the fabrication of car-body parts is conditional on the employment of appropriate welding methods, especially if dissimilar welding must be performed with automotive steel grades. Dissimilar welding of aluminum alloys and steel grades poses some issues concerning the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds, difference in physical and chemical properties of the parent metals, and poor wetting behavior of aluminum. Friction stir welding is considered to be a reasonable solution to obtain sound aluminum/steel joints. A study on the join quality of dissimilar lap joints of steel and aluminum alloy sheets after friction stir welding is proposed here. A low carbon steel is joined with AA6016 aluminum alloy to study preliminarily the feasibility to assembly car-body parts. The joints, welded with tool rotation and feed rate varying in a wide range, have been studied from a visual examination and microstructural point of view. Optical microscopy has been used to characterize the microstructure of the examined sheets in as-received and welded conditions. Micro-hardness measurements have been carried out to quantitatively analyze the local hardness of the welded joints. Set welding process parameters are identified to assemble without the presence of macroscopic defects the examined steel and aluminum welded parts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For eight HCO+ rotational transitions we compare semiclassical and quantum calculations of the line broadening and shift induced by collisions with argon and helium atoms. A detailed analysis of the results allows better insights into the problem of the accuracy of the semiclassical model commonly used in most line shape studies.

Abstract

The present study was carried out close to a fish farming area in the Gulf of Castellammare (N-W Sicily) in summer 2004. Specimens of Mytilus galloprovincialis were transplanted in putatively impacted areas and controls to test the recycler capability of bivalves for reducing the impact of waste on the surrounding environment.Mussels cultivated close to farms grew quicker than mussels in controls transforming waste OM in edible biomass and those positioned at 3 meters depth reached higher levels of secondary production than those at 9 meters.
