Abstract

We characterize and compare four different types of focusing optics for hard X-rays, suitable for femtosecond X-ray diffraction experiments, usinga tabletop femtosecond laser-based plasma source. We demonstrate a 23 µmfocus with a toroidally bent Ge single crystal. A maximum flux of 7× 108 photons/(s mm2) is generated in a 32 µm focus using a multi-layer mirror. An elliptical glass capillary yields the highest number of photons per Bragg angle [2× 105 photons/(s mrad)]. The largest number of photons[3× 106 photons/s] per second is obtained in the 105 µm focus of a poly-capillary optical lens system. All numbers are given for characteristic CuKa photons. Abstract

Ultrashort high-energy electron beams are generated by focusing fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses on a thin metal tape at normal incidence. At laser intensities above 1016 W/cm2 , the fs laser plasma ejects copious amounts of electrons in a direction parallel to the target surface. These electrons are directly detected by means of a backside illuminated X-ray CCD, and their energy spectrum is determined with an electrostatic analyzer. The electrons were observed for two laser polarization directions, parallel and perpendicular to the observation direction. At the maximum applied intensity of 2×1017 W/cm2, the energy distribution peaks at around 35 keV with a hot tail detectable up to about 300 keV. The number of electrons per shot at 35 keV is about 5×108 per sterad per keV. Quasi-monoenergetic electron pulses with a relative energy spread of 1% were produced by using a 50-µm slit in the beam path after the analyzer. This approach offers great potential for time-resolved studies of plasma, liquid, and surface structures with atomic-scale spatial resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have studied high resolution beryllium Auger electron spectra in the 120–160 eV projectile electron energy range following intermediate energies (1.2 and 1.5 a.u. impact velocities) in Be+ + CH4 ion–molecule single collisions [Comments At. Mol. Phys. D 14 (1984) 117]. The major focus of this study is the double K-shell excitation of the Be+ projectile forming triply excited BeII*** states (hollow atoms) and BeIII** K shell ionization plus excitation of BeII doubly excited states with two inner shell vacancies. In such intermediate velocity ion-molecular collisions, the CH4 target plays an important role in the enhancement of the population of BeII*** triply excited states when compared to a more tightly bound He (1s2) 1S ground state target. Due to the pioneering theoretical work of Gou and Chung [Phys. Rev. A 29 (1996) 6103] most line structures can now be unambiguously identified. The main triply excited states are associated with the 2s22p, 2s2p2 and 2p3 and 2l2l′n′l″ (n=3 and 4) configurations decaying to different final BeIII (1snl) ionic states. The line identification method used here is based on Auger energy levels, decay channels and branching ratios. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The first experimental magnetic substate scattering-angle-integrated cross sections following ionization–excitation of He(1s2) 1S to He+(2p) 2P0 in the e−+He collision system have been determined using a combination of total cross sections and polarization fraction measurements in the extreme ultraviolet range. The derived magnetic sublevel cross sections, σ0 and σ1, for ML=0, ±1 have been studied over a wide range of electron velocities (2–8.5 a.u.). These results are compared with previous cross sections for equi-velocity proton impact. In addition, our experimental data are compared with earlier theoretical predictions, our recent second-Born calculations fully including off-energy shell terms, and new R-matrix results. We have extended our polarization measurements for H++He collisions and found excellent agreement between theory and experiment at nearly all impact energies. However, the present second-Born and R-matrix results deviate slightly from the experimental electron data. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
