This paper suggests values or probability distributions for a variety of parameters used in estimating internal doses from radioactive fallout due to ingestion of food. Parameters include those needed to assess the interception and initial retention of radionuclides by vegetation, translocation of deposited radionuclides to edible plant parts, root uptake by plants, transfer of radionuclides from vegetation into milk and meat, transfer of radionuclides into non-agricultural plants and wildlife, and transfer from food and drinking water to mother's milk (human breast milk). The paper includes discussions of the weathering half-life for contamination on plant surfaces, biological half-lives of organisms, food processing (culinary factors), and contamination of drinking water. As appropriate, and as information exists, parameter values or distributions are specific for elements, chemical forms, plant types, or other relevant characteristics. Information has been obtained from the open literature and from publications of the International Atomic Energy Agency. These values and probability distributions are intended to be generic; they should be reviewed for applicability to a given location, time period, or season of the year, as appropriate. In particular, agricultural practices and dietary habits may vary considerably both with geography and over time in a given location.

This paper presents values as well as the bases for calculating internal dose coefficients suitable for estimating organ doses from the exposure to radioactive fallout that could result from the detonation of a nuclear fission device. The 34 radionuclides discussed are the same as those given in a priority list of radionuclides for fallout dose assessments presented in a companion overview paper. The radionuclides discussed are those that are believed to account for a preponderance of the organ doses that might be received by intake by persons of all ages (including in utero and via breast feeding for infants) following exposure to radioactive fallout. The presented dose coefficients for ingestion account for age and include modifications for variations in solubility with distance as discussed previously in the literature, and those for inhalation similarly account for age, solubility, and particle sizes that would be relevant at various distances of exposure as discussed in a companion paper on ingestion dose methods. The proposed modifications peculiar to radioactive fallout account for systematic changes in solubility and particle sizes with distance from the site of detonation, termed here as the region of “local fallout” and the region “beyond local fallout.” Brief definitions of these regions are provided here with more detailed discussion in a companion paper on estimating deposition of fallout radionuclides. This paper provides the dose coefficients for ingestion and inhalation (for particle sizes of 1 μm, 5 μm, 10 μm, and 20 μm) for the region “local fallout.” These dose coefficients for “local fallout” are specific for particles formed in a nuclear explosion that can be large and have radionuclides, particularly the more refractory ones, distributed throughout the volume where the radionuclide has reduced solubility. The dose coefficients for the region “beyond local fallout” are assumed to be the ones published by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) in 1995. Comparisons of the presented dose coefficients are made with values published by the ICRP.

Biological materials such as nacre have evolved microstructural design principles that result in outstanding mechanical properties. While nacre's design concepts have led to bio-inspired materials with enhanced fracture toughness, the microstructural features underlying the remarkable damping properties of this biological material have not yet been fully explored in synthetic composites. Here, we study the damping behavior of nacre-like composites containing mineral bridges and platelet asperities as nanoscale structural features within its brick-and-mortar architecture. Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed to experimentally elucidate the role of these features on the damping response of the nacre-like composites. By enhancing stress transfer between platelets and at the brick/mortar interface, mineral bridges and nano-asperities were found to improve the damping performance of the composite to levels that surpass many biological and man-made materials. Surprisingly, the improved properties are achieved without reaching the perfect organization of the biological counterparts. Our nacre-like composites display a loss modulus 2.4-fold higher than natural nacre and 1.4-fold more than highly dissipative natural fiber composites. The reflection of light from distributed microplatelets is an effective approach to creating color and controlling the optical properties in paints, security features, and optical filters. However, predictive tools for the design and manufacturing of such composite materials are limited due to the complex light-matter interactions that determine their optical response. Here, the optical reflectance of individual reflective microplatelets and of polymer-based composites containing these engineered platelets as an aligned, dispersed phase are experimentally studied and analytically calculated. Transfer-matrix calculations are used to interpret the effect of the platelet architecture, the number of platelets, and their size distribution on the experimentally measured reflectance of composites prepared using a previously established magnetic alignment technique. It is demonstrated that the reflectance of the composites can be understood as the averaged response of an array of Fabry-Perot resonators, in which the microplatelets act as semi-transparent flat reflectors and the polymer as cavity medium. By using an analytical model and computer simulations to describe the interaction of light with platelets embedded in a polymer matrix, this work provides useful tools for the design and fabrication of composites with tailored optical reflectance., Advanced Optical Materials, 11 (7), ISSN:2195-1071

International audience; The objective of our research is to understand the forms that work engagement can take in a low-valued profession such as that of garbage collector. In this article, work engagement of garbage collectors is discussed with reference to the work of Alexandra Bidet. Through a mixed methodology, we explore how garbage collectors develop internal and external valuations in the relationship they have with their activities. A typological analysis makes it possible to grasp the diversity of the types of work engagement, referring to its sociological dimension: cooperation, appropriation of autonomy, mobilization of the body, technicality, and forms of adherence to professional standards. This original approach to work engagement criticizes its approach in management science, where work engagement is often understood from the perspective of a worker idealized by the employer rather than that of the actual worker.; L’objectif de notre recherche est de comprendre les formes que peut revêtir l’engagement au travail dans un métier peu valorisé comme celui d’éboueur. Dans cet article, l’engagement au travail des éboueurs est abordé en référence aux travaux d’Alexandra Bidet. Au travers d’une méthodologie mixte, nous explorons la façon dont les éboueurs élaborent des sources de valorisations internes et externes dans le rapport qu’ils entretiennent avec leurs activités. Une analyse typologique permet de saisir la diversité des modes d’engagement dans le travail, renvoyant à sa dimension sociologique : coopération, appropriation de l’autonomie, mobilisation du corps, technicité et formes d’adhésion aux normes professionnelles. Cette approche originale de l’engagement au travail critique son abord en sciences de gestion, l’engagement au travail y étant souvent appréhendé du point de vue d’un travailleur idéalisé par l’employeur plutôt que celui du travailleur réel.

The increasing use of lightweight composite materials in structural applications requires the development of new damage monitoring technologies to ensure their safe use and prevent accidents. Although several molecular strategies have been proposed to report damage in polymers through mechanochromic responses, these approaches have not yet been translated into lightweight bioinspired composites for load-bearing applications. Here, we report on the development of bioinspired laminates of alternating polymer and nacre-like layers that combine optical translucency, high fracture toughness, and damage-reporting capabilities. The composites signal damage via a fluorescence color change that arises from the force activation of mechanophore molecules embedded in the material's polymer phase. A quantitative correlation between the applied strain and the fluorescence intensity was successfully established. We demonstrate that optical imaging of mechanically loaded composites allows for the localized detection of damage prior to fracture. This fluorescence-based self-reporting mechanism offers a promising approach for the early detection of damage in lightweight structural composites and can serve as a useful tool for the analysis of fracture processes in bulk transparent materials.
