Abstract

The marine acoustic techniques are powerful tools to investigate and identify the seabed objects by applying different processing and interpretation steps. Two types of marine acoustic imaging techniques used in this study; Side Scan Sonar (SSS) that mapping seabed features and identifies the objects on it, and Sub-Bottom Profiling (SBP) that providing information about sediment thicknesses and stratigraphic structure. The integration between these two marine acoustic techniques, as well as, ground truth data obtained from an underwater camera, was used to distinguish seabed objects; coastal boulder accumulations that are documented along the western Mediterranean coast of Egypt. The study and analysis of the collected data demonstrated that: the combination between side scan sonar, chirp sub-bottom profiling systems, and ROV images can successfully distinguish different types of objects. Generally, objects observed from SSS are indicated in the SBP as weak backscatter curves. The case study results, from analysis of SBP with ROV image to the object detected by SSS utilized three objects making a shadow in SSS seabed: boulder, hard substrate, and seagrass. The integration of these techniques resulting specifies the location of the geo-hazards area.

163. Local Dent Behavior of Directional Crossing Pipeline Caused by the Boulder in Stratum.

Abstract

Dent of crossing pipeline caused by the boulder in the stratum may result in pipeline premature failure. Dent process of the crossing pipeline was investigated. Effects of boulder load, pipeline pressure and diameter-to-thickness ratio on the dent behavior were discussed. The results show that dent deformation process of non-pressure pipeline consists of five phases, while the process of pressure pipeline consists of eight phases. When the boulder load increases, plastic deformation increases and a dent with ship shape appears on the pipeline. Dent rate, dent depth and length increase when the diameter-to-thickness ratio increases. With the increasing internal pressure, dent rate of the pipeline decreases, but rebound rate increases. Axial length of the dent for pressure pipeline is smaller than non-pressure pipeline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

164. Coral boulders on Melekeok reef in the Palau Islands: An indicator of wave activity associated with tropical cyclones.

Abstract

Waves generated by tropical cyclones and tsunamis cause various impacts such as coastal erosion and damage to infrastructure. The intensity of tropical cyclones will probably increase in the near future as a result of global warming; therefore, predicting the likely impacts of these storms is a prime concern. Boulder deposits are one of the key proxies that assist our understanding of previous tropical cyclones and tsunamis, and are important if we are to accurately project their future impacts. In December 2012, Typhoon Bopha hit the Palau Islands and many boulders were probably deposited on the east coast of Babeldaob Island during the event. This area is one of the few locations where it is possible to distinguish between deposits that were generated by tropical cyclone waves and tsunamis. This study records the distribution of boulders from the shore to the reef crest at Melekeok reef on Babeldaob Island and evaluates the relationship between the movement of boulders and the hydraulic forces generated by the waves using a hydrodynamic model and wave calculations. In addition, this study projects the coastal impacts of tropical cyclone waves in the near future. Many boulders have been deposited on the reef crest within 100 m of the reef edge, and the maximum weight of the boulders is 2.2 tons. The boulders are composed of massive corals (e.g., Platygyra ) and they originated from the upper reef slope. The results of the hydrodynamic modeling indicate that these boulders were transported and deposited by the waves generated by Typhoon Bopha (significant wave height = 8.7 m) or TCs with a similar intensity of Typhoon Bopha. Moreover, there are no boulder deposits at the shore, which implies that the reef has not been affected by tsunamis. Even if one or more tsunamis have inundated the reef, the associated hydraulic forces appear to have been lower than those of Typhoon Bopha. These findings indicate that Typhoon Bopha has probably generated the most intense wave event in recent times. However, it is likely that tropical cyclones more intense than Typhoon Bopha will affect the reef in the near future as the climate continues to warm through the 21st century. Consequently, the study site will probably face an increased risk of coastal erosion and destruction of property, if no plans are developed to reduce and manage such impacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The presence of large boulders located on a rocky coast and related to extreme events is registered for the first time on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. These are scattered boulders, some overlapping, found on the coast of Sardinilla (San Pedro de Macorí la Romana), in the south of the Dominican Republic. The discovery expands boulders studies in the Caribbean and opens the door to new research related to cyclone and/or tsunami events in Haiti and the Dominican Republic., Se registra por primera vez en la isla caribeña de la Española, República Dominicana, la presencia de bloques de grandes dimensiones ubicados sobre la costa rocosa y relacionados con eventos extremos. Se trata de bloques dispersos, algunos con imbricación, y ubicados en la costa de Sardinilla (San Pedro de Macorí, la Romana), S de República Dominicana. El registro amplía los estudios de bloques en el Caribe y abre la puerta a nuevas investigaciones relacionadas con eventos de ciclones y/o tsunamis en los países de Haití y República Dominicana.

En aquest treball, diversos mètodes orientats a la navegació àgil de vehicles robòtics terrestres son comparats. Primerament, es realitza un estudi de publicacions per a identificar els mètodes pertanyents a l'estat de la tècnica més adequats per a ser comparats amb un mètode de navegació àgil (''CarPlanner'') desenvolupat al Autonomous Robotics and Perception Group (ARPG). Diferents mètodes són examinats i implementats en un ambient simulat. Aquests mètodes són evaluats basant-se en la seva eficàcia navegant el vehicle robòtic terrestre en una pista que té salts, sotracs i bermes. L'ambient simulat conté un vehicle terrestre de quatre rodes amortiguades amb geometria d'Ackermann, el qual ha de conduïr per un terreny amb dinàmica de fricció no linear. Els criteris per a evaluar els mètodes inclouen l'habilitat per a utilitzar les dinàmiques del vehicle per a recórrer la pista de manera ràpida i segura. Finalment, el mètode més apropiat i amb millor resultats és implementat al cotxe NinjaCar d'escala 1:8 del laboratori ARPG i comparat amb l'algoritme CarPlanner mitjançant experimentació física., In this work, several state-of-the-art methods for agile navigation of robot ground vehicles are compared. First, a survey of the literature is performed to identify the state-of-the-art and most appropriate methods for comparing to an agile navigation method (''CarPlanner'') developed in the Autonomous Robotics and Perception Group (ARPG). Several methods are reviewed and implemented in a dynamic vehicle simulation environment. These methods are evaluated on their efficacy of navigating a robot ground vehicle around a race track featuring jumps, bumps, and berms. The simulation environment features a four-wheeled, Ackermann-style ground vehicle with suspension and austere terrain with nonlinear friction dynamics. Criteria for evaluating the methods includes the ability of the method at utilizing the vehicle dynamics to quickly and safely traverse the track. Finally, the most appropriate and best-performing method is implemented on ARPG's 1/8th-scale NinjaCar vehicle platform and compared in physical experimentation to ARPG's CarPlanner algorithm.

Abstract

Some of the elements in the rocky intertidal zone, such as boulders, act as a refuge, mating, feeding and nursery area for marine fauna. In the present study, we analysed the population structure of the intertidal stone crab Xantho poressa in a human-restricted area, between March 2019 and February 2020, comprised of a rocky shore along the SW Atlantic Spanish coast. The study aims to provide information about the size distribution and identify which environmental factors shape the distribution, sex ratio and mating system of the species. The males were significantly larger than the females and no significant difference in size was observed between ovigerous and non-ovigerous females. The sex ratio was biased towards females. Groups constituted by one large male and several females were observed coexisting under a boulder. Other groups of two or more males and various females were also observed during the study. The distribution of the species is mainly determined by the size and weight of the boulder. The complexity of the study area, and the key role of boulders in the distribution of the species, suggests that X. poressa might have a refuge–defence polygynous mating system.

Abstract

En aquest treball, diversos mètodes orientats a la navegació àgil de vehicles robòtics terrestres son comparats. Primerament, es realitza un estudi de publicacions per a identificar els mètodes pertanyents a l'estat de la tècnica més adequats per a ser comparats amb un mètode de navegació àgil (''CarPlanner'') desenvolupat al Autonomous Robotics and Perception Group (ARPG). Diferents mètodes són examinats i implementats en un ambient simulat. Aquests mètodes són evaluats basant-se en la seva eficàcia navegant el vehicle robòtic terrestre en una pista que té salts, sotracs i bermes. L'ambient simulat conté un vehicle terrestre de quatre rodes amortiguades amb geometria d'Ackermann, el qual ha de conduïr per un terreny amb dinàmica de fricció no linear. Els criteris per a evaluar els mètodes inclouen l'habilitat per a utilitzar les dinàmiques del vehicle per a recórrer la pista de manera ràpida i segura. Finalment, el mètode més apropiat i amb millor resultats és implementat al cotxe NinjaCar d'escala 1:8 del laboratori ARPG i comparat amb l'algoritme CarPlanner mitjançant experimentació física. In this work, several state-of-the-art methods for agile navigation of robot ground vehicles are compared. First, a survey of the literature is performed to identify the state-of-the-art and most appropriate methods for comparing to an agile navigation method (''CarPlanner'') developed in the Autonomous Robotics and Perception Group (ARPG). Several methods are reviewed and implemented in a dynamic vehicle simulation environment. These methods are evaluated on their efficacy of navigating a robot ground vehicle around a race track featuring jumps, bumps, and berms. The simulation environment features a four-wheeled, Ackermann-style ground vehicle with suspension and austere terrain with nonlinear friction dynamics. Criteria for evaluating the methods includes the ability of the method at utilizing the vehicle dynamics to quickly and safely traverse the track. Finally, the most appropriate and best-performing method is implemented on ARPG's 1/8th-scale NinjaCar vehicle platform and compared in physical experimentation to ARPG's CarPlanner algorithm.

Abstract

International audience; Cliff-top boulder deposits (CBDs) are morphological indicators of high-energy conditions. Since 2014, a monitoring of CBDs dynamics has been undertaken on the south-western coast of Iceland (Reykjanes Peninsula) to monitor their long-term activation (quarrying, transport and deposition) as a proxy of the inter-annual winter storminess variations and basaltic cliff erosion processes in a context of rocky coast progradation. Annual topomorphological surveys of four study sites were conducted and Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry was performed to quantify CBDs displacements. Hydrodynamic conditions were analyzed based on offshore waves and water level. Results show that CBDs activation occurs every winter, regardless of the variability of hydrodynamic conditions. Depending on the site and the year, more than 2% and 17% of the CBDs accumulated above 8 m to 10 m asl at the top of the cliffs are regularly mobilized. While inland movements represent the main mode of transport of blocks (between 50% to 60%), seaward and longshore movements are also well represented (10% to 20%). Longshore displacement is favored by the wide tabular morpho-structural setting of the wave-scour cliff-top platforms, which is explained by the structure of pāhoehoe lava flows. The activation of CBDs –measured from the volumes of displaced boulders–, shows a good correspondence with the frequency and duration of storms. However, as was the case during the winter of 2018-2019, it was rather the intensity of two highly morphogenic episodes combining storm waves and especially very high spring tide water levels, that generated the largest boulders displacements. Substantial interannual activation of the CBDs confirms that they constitute an important and still understudied proxy of the morphogenic system of high-energy rocky coasts, whose the dynamic in terms of carrying, transport, and deposition, could significantly increase with rising sea level.

Abstract

The impact effect of boulder within debris flow is the key factor contributing to peak impact as well as to the failure of debris flow control work. So accurate measuring and calculating the impact force of debris flow can ensure the engineering design strength. However, limited to the existing laboratory conditions and piezoelectric sensor performance, it is impossible, based on the conventional measurements, to devise a computing method for expressing a reliable boulder impact force. This paper has therefore designed a new measurement device according to the method of integrating Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and reinforced concrete composite beam (RCB) for measuring the impact force of debris flows, i.e. mounting FBG on the axially stressed steel bar in the composite beam at regular intervals to monitor the steel strain. RCB plays the role of contacting debris flow and protecting FBG sensors. Taking this new device as the experimental object, drop testing is designed for simulating and reflecting the boulder impact force. In a series of impacting tests, the relationship between the peak dynamic strain value of the steel bar and the impact force is analyzed, and based on which, an inversion model that uses the steel bar strain as the independent variable is established for calculating the boulder impact force. The experimental results show that this new inversion model can determine the impact force value and its acting position with a system error of 18.1%, which can provide an experimental foundation for measuring the impact force of boulders within the debris flow by the new FBG-based device. Abstract

Cliff-top boulder deposits (CBDs) are morphological indicators of high-energy conditions. Since 2014, a monitoring of CBDs dynamics has been undertaken on the south-western coast of Iceland (Reykjanes Peninsula) to monitor their long-term activation (quarrying, transport and deposition) as a proxy of the inter-annual winter storminess variations and basaltic cliff erosion processes in a context of rocky coast progradation. Annual topomorphological surveys of four study sites were conducted and Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry was performed to quantify CBDs displacements. Hydrodynamic conditions were analyzed based on offshore waves and water level. Results show that CBDs activation occurs every winter, regardless of the variability of hydrodynamic conditions. Depending on the site and the year, >2% and 17% of the CBDs accumulated above 8 m to 10 m asl at the top of the cliffs are regularly mobilized. While inland movements represent the main mode of transport of blocks (between 50% to 60%), seaward and longshore movements are also well represented (10% to 20%). Longshore displacement is favored by the wide tabular morpho-structural setting of the wave-scour cliff-top platforms, which is explained by the structure of pāhoehoe lava flows. The activation of CBDs –measured from the volumes of displaced boulders–, shows a good correspondence with the frequency and duration of storms. However, as was the case during the winter of 2018–2019, it was rather the intensity of two highly morphogenic episodes combining storm waves and especially very high spring tide water levels, that generated the largest boulders displacements. Abstract

Many popular sites for recreational boulder climbing lie within protected natural areas, yet no research has assessed whether bouldering threatens associated vegetation – a diverse community regularly including rare species. This paucity of research is disconcerting because 1) bouldering involves removal of vegetation and soil, 2) the sport's popularity is growing quickly, and 3) cliff-climbing has been linked to lowered vegetation diversity. Our study is the first to quantify the impact of bouldering on vegetation. Following global trends of increased development in remote bouldering sites, we sampled such sites in the Shawangunks, New York – a world-renowned climbing destination. We implemented a paired climbed-unclimbed design that successfully removed potentially confounding environmental variation. Thus, bouldering appears to have caused our observed differences in vegetation between pairs. Climbed boulders had lower species richness and cover, with the greatest reduction found on mid-height boulder faces where most climbing occurs. Community composition and species frequency did not differ between pairs. This impact is weaker than that reported in most cliff-climbing studies, but the number of climbers and usage at our sites was lower. Accordingly, while bouldering in these remote sites may not be a major threat presently, the clear impact strongly suggests that even moderate increases in bouldering activity will have a substantial impact on vegetation. Abstract

The essential requirements of a successful tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnelling operation are complete characterization of the ground and thorough identification of geological and geotechnical risks. This paper predicts the geological and geotechnical risks of Tabriz Urban Railway Line 2 (TURL2) in Iran. The railway consists of a 9.5-m-diameter, 22-km-long tunnel and 20 stations. The tunnel passes through a soft alluvial sedimentary combination of clay (CL), silt (ML), sand (SM, SP) and gravel (GP). The tunnel alignment has been divided into three parts subject to the geological and geotechnical conditions that might be encountered during construction. The investigated geological-geotechnical risks of the soft ground along the TURL2 are oversize grains, soil abrasiveness, liquefaction potential, differential permeability and clogging. The results show that all of the investigated geological-geotechnical risks are present in the TURL2 route and that improvement of the tunnel route soils is essential. For example, to reduce the liquefaction potential, it is necessary to decrease the water table level or else improve the soft soils by injecting cement grout. In addition, in order to reduce clogging of the tunnel route soils, the use of foam as a soil conditioner is appropriate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Large eddy simulations (LES) of flow over wall-mounted boulders placed on a rough, permeable bed, composed of one layer of densely-packed spheres, are performed. This configuration is based on the experimental configuration reported in Papanicolaou et al. (2012) [14] the data of which are used to validate the LES. A fairly good agreement between calculated and measured time-averaged streamwise velocity and turbulence intensity profiles is found confirming the accuracy of the simulation. Details of the time-averaged and instantaneous flow are revealed using various visualisation methods. The time-averaged flow is characterised by a symmetric pair of funnel vortices comprising the recirculation zone in the lee of the boulder. The funnel vortex is bounded by significant shear layers caused by high-momentum fluid filling the low momentum wake zone behind the boulder. Bed roughness and permeability appears to play an important role in this flow, it affects the near-bed velocity profiles and subsurface fluid is entrained into the low pressure zone behind the boulder, specifically into the funnel vortex, moreover surface-subsurface flow exchange in particular in the vicinity of the boulders disrupts the secondary flow in the wake. The instantaneous flow features various turbulence structures which are educed by means of isosurfaces of the Q-criterion. Shear layer roll-up leads to high-frequency shedding of roller vortices, which are subsequently stretched by significant velocity gradients and deformed into a hairpin or horseshoe form. Vertical and horizontal shear layer flapping is revealed and quantified via vorticity contour plots and velocity spectra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
