- Abstract
We present a novel technique, called DSVP (Discrimination through Singular Vectors Projections), to discriminate spurious events within a dataset. The purpose of this paper is to lay down a general procedure which can be tailored for a broad variety of applications. After describing the general concept, we apply the algorithm to the problem of identifying nearly coincident events in low temperature microcalorimeters in order to push the time resolution close to its intrinsic limit. In fact, from simulated datasets it was possible to achieve an effective time resolution even shorter than the sampling time of the system considered. The obtained results are contextualized in the framework of the HOLMES experiment, which aims at directly measuring the neutrino mass with the calorimetric approach, allowing to significally improve its statistical sensitivity.

- Abstract
The HOLMES experiment will perform a precise calorimetric measurement of the end point of the Electron Capture (EC) decay spectrum of 163Ho in order to extract information on neutrino mass with a sensitivity below 2 eV. In its final configuration, HOLMES will deploy 1000 detectors of low temperature microcalorimeters with implanted 163Ho nuclei. The baseline sensors for HOLMES are Mo/Cu TESs (Transition Edge Sensors) on SiNx membrane with gold absorbers. Considering the large number of pixels and an event rate of about 300 Hz/pixel, a large multiplexing factor and a large bandwidth are needed. To fulfill this requirement, HOLMES will exploit recent advances on microwave multiplexing. In this contribution we present the status of the activities in development, the performances of the developed microwave-multiplexed readout system, and the results obtained with the detectors specifically designed for HOLMES in terms of noise, time and energy resolutions

Purpose Therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer (PCa) have been evolving dramatically worldwide. The current article reports on the evolution of surgical management strategies for PCa in Italy. Methods The data from two independent Italian multicenter projects, the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA (started in 2007, holding data of 890 patients) and the Pros-IT-CNR project (started in 2014, with data of 692 patients), were compared. Differences in patients' characteristics were evaluated. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify characteristics associated with robot-assisted (RA) procedure, nerve sparing (NS) approach, and lymph node dissection (LND). Results The two cohorts did not differ in terms of age and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels at biopsy. Patients enrolled in the Pros-IT-CNR project more frequently were submitted to RA (58.8% vs 27.6%,p < 0.001) and NS prostatectomy (58.4% vs. 52.9%,p = 0.04), but received LND less frequently (47.7% vs. 76.7%,p < 0.001), as compared to the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA patients. At multivariate logistic models, Lower Gleason Scores (GS) and PSA levels were significantly associated with RA prostatectomy in both cohorts. As for the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA data, clinical T-stage was a predictor for NS (OR = 0.07 for T3, T4) and LND (OR = 2.41 for T2) procedures. As for Pros-IT CNR data, GS >= (4 + 3) and positive cancer cores >= 50% were decisive factors both for NS (OR 0.29 and 0.30) and LND (OR 7.53 and 2.31) strategies. Conclusions PCa management has changed over the last decade in Italian centers: RA and NS procedures without LND have become the methods of choice to treat newly medium-high risk diagnosed PCa.

The characterization of the rf-SQUID-based JTWPA in terms of its noise figure and gain for different input states (Fock states or Coherent states) has been carried out. The spectral distribution of the noise temperature Tn and gain G presents a region where the amplifier has a relatively high gain with a thermal noise that can go beyond the standard quantum limit =ℏ/2 (valid only for single mode input states [44]) as shown in Fig. 3. The TWJPA is here biased in its 3WM regime and pumped at p = 12 GHz.

- Abstract
HOLMES is an experiment aiming at performing a direct measurement of the neutrino mass from the electron capture (EC) spectrum of 163Ho. In order to reach a sensitivity of the order of ∼ 1 eV/c2 on the neutrino mass, it is necessary to gather as many as 10 13 events in the 3-year projected live time of HOLMES, keeping the pileup fraction as low as 10 - 4. This is not a trivial matter when it comes to low- temperature calorimeters, which usually have a rather slow time response. At the same time, a large number of detectors need to be operated simultaneously, and hence, in order to avoid an extremely large cryogenic facility, multiplexing is required. In this contribution, I will outline the current status and perspective of HOLMES, with special care devoted to the detectors and readout system, which have currently reached their target performance

- Abstract
The absolute neutrino mass is still an unknown parameter in the modern landscape of particle physics. The HOLMES experiment aims at exploiting the calorimetric approach to directly measure the neutrino mass through the kinematic measurement of the decay products of the weak process decay of 163Ho. This low energy decaying isotope, in fact, undergoes electron capture emitting a neutrino and leaving the daughter atom, 163Dy∗, in an atomic excited state. This, in turn, relaxes by emitting electrons and, to a considerably lesser extent, photons. The high-energy portion of the calorimetric spectrum of this decay is affected by the non-vanishing neutrino mass value. Given the small fraction of events falling within the region of interest, to achieve a high experimental sensitivity on the neutrino mass, it is important to have a high activity combined with a very small undetected pileup contribution. To achieve these targets, the final configuration of HOLMES foresees the deployment of a large number of 163Ho ion-implanted TESs characterized by an ambitiously high activity of 300 Hz each. In this paper, we outline the status of the major tasks that will bring HOLMES to achieve a statistical sensitivity on the neutrino mass as low as 2 eV/c2.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: We assessed patients and tumor characteristics, as well as health-related quality of life (HRQoL) items, associated with curative intent treatment decision-making in clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa) patients. METHODS: Clinically localized PCa treated with either radical prostatectomy (RP) or radiation therapy (RT) within 12 months from diagnosis were abstracted from The PROState cancer monitoring in ITaly, from the National Research Council (Pros-IT CNR) database. Multivariable logistic regression (MLR) models predicting RT vs. RP were fitted, after adjustment for HRQoL items, patients and tumor characteristics. RESULTS: Of 1041 patients, 631 (60.2%) were treated with RP and 410 (39.8%) with RT. Relative to RT, RP patients were younger age (mean age 64.5±6.6 vs. 71.4±4.9, P<0.001) and had higher rates of D’Amico low-intermediate risk groups (31.8 vs. 21.9% low, 46.3% vs. 43.5% intermediate and 21.9% vs. 34.6% high risk, P<0.001). Overall, 93.2% of RP patients were enrolled by urologists and 82.7% of RT patients by radiation oncologists. RP patients had generally higher means values of HRQoL items. In MLR models, higher RT rates were independently associated with more advanced age (odds ratio [OR] 6.14, P<0.001) and BMI≥30 kg/m2 (OR 1.78, P<0.001). Conversely, lower rates of RT were independently associated with married (OR 0.55, P=0.01) and worker status (OR 0.52, P=0.004), enrollment in academic centers (OR 0.59, P=0.005) and higher physical composite score (OR 0.88, P=0.03) and baseline sexual function items (OR 0.92, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Most patients with clinically localized prostate cancer undergoing definitive treatment at Italian institutions receive RP instead of RT. Moreover, those who are younger, married, working, as well as those with better physical and sexual function are more likely to undergo surgery.

- Abstract
Gli unici metodi per misurare la massa del neutrino che non siano dipendente dal modello teorico sono quelli basati sullo studio cinematico del decadimento beta o per cattura elettronica, poiché assumono solo la conservazioni di energia e momento. Holmes è un progetto ERC che è iniziato nel 2014 e che è portato avanti nei laboratori di criogenia dell’università di Milano-Bicocca. Il suo obiettivo è quello di effettuare una misura diretta della massa del neutrino con una sensibilità statistica dell’ordine dell’elettronvolt. Inoltre, proverà anche la fattibilità di questa tecnica per una futuro esperimento che mirerà a superare la sensibilità attuale di KATRIN, che rappresenta lo stato dell’arte delle misure dirette. Per raggiungere la sensiblità di 1 eV. Holmes farà una misura calorimetrica, adottando 1000 microcalorimeteri a basse temperature, ognuno dei quali verrà impiantato con una attività di 300 Bq di 163 Ho. In una misura calorimetrica del decadimento per cattura elettronica dell’Ho, tutta l’energia viene misurata eccetto quella del neutrino. Anche se il neutrino non viene rivelato, il valore della sua massa altera la forma dello spettro di diseccitazione, riducendo anche il valore dell’end-point di un eguale valore. Questa distorsione dello spettro è misurabile solo in una regione vicino all’end-point, dove il rate di conteggi è basso e il background può facilmente nascondere il segnale. Il 163 Ho rappresenta il miglior candidato per una misura calorimetrica della massa del neutrino in termini di sensibilità statistica, dato che ha un Q valore basso di 2833 eV. Inoltre ha anche una vita media relativamente breve (4570 anni), che permette di inserire una piccola quantità di nuclei in un piccolo volume contenitivo. Ogni singolo rivelatore di Holmems è composto da un assorbitore in oro con l’olmio impiantato, termicamente accoppiato a un Transition Edge Sensor (TES), il quale è un termometro molto sensibile, costituito da un bilayer superco, The absolute mass of neutrinos is one of the most important riddles yet to be solved, since it has many implications in Particle Physics and Cosmology. The only model independent method of measuring the neutrino mass is based on the kinematic analysis of the beta or the electron capture (EC) decay, which only assumes momentum and energy conservation. Holmes is an ERC project started in 2014, which is currently being set up in the cryogenic laboratory of the University of Milano Bicocca. It will perform a direct measurement of the neutrino mass with a sensitivity of the order of 1 eV. In addition, it will prove the scalability of this technique to a next generation experiment that might go beyond the current expected sensitivity of the state of the art experiment, KATRIN. In order to reach its goal sensitivity, Holmes will use 1000 low temperature microcalorimeters, each implanted with an activity of 300 Bq of 163 Ho, performing thus a calorimetric measurement. In a calorimetric measurement of the electron capture (EC) decay of 163Ho, all the energy is measured except for the fraction carried away by the neutrino. Although the neutrino is not detected, the value of its mass affects the shape of the de-excitation spectrum, reducing also the end-point of the spectrum by an amount equal to m_nu. The spectrum distortion is statistically significant only in a region close to the end-point, where the count rate is lowest and background can easily hinder the signal. In terms of achievable statistical sensitivity, 163 Ho is one of the best candidate, given the combined effect of its low Q-value (2.833 keV) and the proximity of the highest energy peak to the end-point of the spectrum. 163 Ho also has a relatively short half life of 4570 years, which allows to embed a small number of nuclei in a small absorbing volume. - Abstract
Ultralow-noise microwave amplification and detection play a central role in different applications, going from fundamental physics experiments to the deployment of quantum technologies. In many applications the necessity of reading multiple detectors, or cavities or qubits, calls for large bandwidth amplifiers with the lowest possible noise. Current technologies are based on High Electron Mobility Transistors and Josephson Parametric Amplifiers. Both have limitations, the former in terms of the minimum noise, the latter in terms of bandwidth. Superconducting Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (TWPAs) have the potential of offering quantum limited noise and large bandwidth. These amplifiers are based on the parametric amplification of microwaves traveling along a transmission line with embedded nonlinear elements. We are developing superconducting TWPAs based both on Josephson junction arrays (Traveling Wave Josephson Parametric mplifiers) and on nonlinear kinetic inductance (Dispersion Engineered Traveling Wave Kinetic Inductance Amplifiers). Our goal is to achieve large bandwidth (in the 5 to 10 GHz range), large gain (more than 20 dB), large saturation power (more than -50 dBm), and near quantum limited noise (noise temperature less than 600 mK). Current achievements in the design and development of the high performance TWPAs are here reported and discussed, together with current limitations and possible future developments.

Background There are several treatments available to newly diagnosed prostate cancer (PCA) patients. Although surgery and radiotherapy (RT) with or without androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are widely adopted treatment options for localized PCA together with active surveillance (AS), there is no consensus nor randomised trials on treatment selection, prospective quality of life (QOL), along with toxicity outcomes and according to treatment modality in the Italian population. The current study aimed to describe clinical-therapeutic features and QOL at PCA diagnosis, according to different treatment patterns in a large prospective, Italian population, enrolled in the Pros-IT CNR study. Methods The Pros-IT CNR is an on-going national, multicenter, observational, prospective study on patients affected by PCA who have been referred by 97 Italian Urology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology facilities participating in the project. The possible relationships between the treatment patterns reported in the 6 month follow-up case report form and patients' features at diagnosis were evaluated using exploratory multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and other data analysis method. Results At diagnosis, surgery and AS patients were significantly younger, had fewer comorbidities, lower PSA levels and Gleason Score (GS) values; they were also diagnosed at an earlier stage of disease with respect to the RT or ADT patients who showed significantly worse QoL scores at the time of diagnosis. Conclusions An analysis of the data collected at baseline and 6 months later uncovered substantial differences in ages, comorbidities, clinical and QOL features in the various treatment groups. These findings do not fully reflect the current PCA treatment guidelines and suggest the need for a multidisciplinary consensus guideline to ameliorate both the counselling and treatments of PCA patients.

- Abstract
Background: Intraoperative adverse events (iAEs) are surgical and anesthesiologic complications. Despite the availability of grading criteria, iAEs are infrequently reported in the surgical literature and in cases for which iAEs are reported, these events are described with significant heterogeneity. Objective: To develop Intraoperative Complications Assessment and Reporting with Universal Standards (ICARUS) Global Surgical Collaboration criteria to standardize the assessment, reporting, and grading of iAEs. The ultimate aim is to improve our understanding of the nature and frequency of iAEs and our ability to counsel patients regarding surgical procedures. Design, setting, and participants: The present study involved the following steps: (1) collecting criteria for assessing, reporting, and grading of iAEs via a comprehensive umbrella review; (2) collecting additional criteria via a survey of a panel of experienced surgeons (first round of a modified Delphi survey); (3) creating a comprehensive list of reporting criteria; (4) combining criteria acquired in the first two steps; and (5) establishing a consensus on clinical and quality assessment utility as determined in the second round of the Delphi survey. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Panel inter-rater agreement and consistency were assessed as the overall percentage agreement and Cronbach's α. Results and limitations: The umbrella review led to nine common criteria for assessing, grading, and reporting iAEs, and review of iAE grading systems led to two additional criteria. In the first Delphi round, 35 surgeons responded and two criteria were added. In the second Delphi round, 13 common criteria met the threshold for final guideline inclusion. All 13 criteria achieved the consensus minimum of 70%, with agreement on the usefulness of the criteria for clinical and quality improvement ranging from 74% to 100%. The mean inter-rater agreement was 89.0% for clinical improvement and 88.6% for quality improvement. Conclusions: The ICARUS Global Collaboration criteria might aid in identifying important criteria when reporting iAEs, which will support all those involved in patient care and scientific publishing. Patient summary: We consulted a panel of experienced surgeons to develop a set of guidelines for academic surgeons to follow when publishing surgical studies. The surgeon panel proposed a list of 13 criteria that may improve global understanding of complications during specific procedures and thus improve the ability to counsel patients on surgical risk. © 2022 European Association of Urology

関西光化学研究所の J-KAREN-P レーザーを CH または CHCl 薄膜ターゲットに照射し、 無衝突静電衝撃波イオン加速(ECS)の研究を行った。薄膜ターゲット(0.5~4.0μm)をプ レパルスまたはメインパルスの一部を取り出したイオンかパルスによりプラズマ化させる ことで初期プラズマを形成し、そこにメインパルス(プレパルスから数 ns 後)を入射する ことで ECS を生成した。ターゲットの厚さ、レーザーのスポット径、プレパルスとメイン パルスのコントラストなどを変化させることで初期プラズマを変化させて実験を行った。 計測にはトムソンパラボラ(加速イオン)、X 線分光器(プラズマ密度・温度)を使用した。, 第38回 プラズマ・核融合学会 年会
