Abstract

A new stereoselective method for the synthesis of 2-amino-2-deoxy monosaccharides using glycal as starting material was developed. The procedure involves initial activation of manganese nitrido complex by trifluoroacetic anhydride which serves as a reactive nitrogen transfer agent. Such metal-mediated amination reaction involves the formation of an intermediate which when allowed to react with PhSH yields a functionalized 2-amino sugar. The sugar has been recognized suitable for glycosidation reactions.

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of two novel nitridomanganese(V) salen-derived complex which can be used as reagents for the amination of electron-rich enol ethers are described. The complex can be activated for nitrogen transfer with trifluoroacetic acid. N-trifluoroacetyl alpha-amino ketone products were formed when the nitridomanganese(V) salen-derived complexes were activated in the presence of some silyl enol ethers.

Abstract

Improper function of voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs), obligatory membrane proteins for bioelectrical signaling, has been linked to a number of human pathologies. Small-molecule agents that target NaVs hold considerable promise for treatment of chronic disease. Absent a comprehensive understanding of channel structure, the challenge of designing selective agents to modulate the activity of NaV subtypes is formidable. We have endeavored to gain insight into the 3D architecture of the outer vestibule of NaV through a systematic structure-activity relationship (SAR) study involving the bis-guanidinium toxin saxitoxin (STX), modified saxitoxins, and protein mutagenesis. Mutant cycle analysis has led to the identification of an acetylated variant of STXwith unprecedented, low-nanomolar affinity for human NaV1.7 (hNaV1.7), a channel subtype that has been implicated in pain perception. A revised toxin-receptor binding model is presented, which is consistent with the large body of SAR data that we have obtained. Abstract

A new synthetic sequence uses D-erythronic gamma-lactone as a starting compound to synthesize (+)-zaragozic acid C. The synthetic sequence involves many steps including ozonolysis, condensation, osmylation and oxidation. Spectral studies confirm that characteristics of synthetic (+)-zaragozic acid C are identical to those of an authentic sample.

Abstract

Les systèmes boisés liés aux activités agricoles sont soumis à des conditions de gestion et à des usages qui aboutissent à des structures, tant internes qu'externes, plus diversifiées que celles des forêts publiques. On présente ici la démarche méthodologique adoptée sur deux communes du canton d'Aurignac (31). Il est procédé, d'une part, à une photo-interprétation des structures boisées et pré-boisées et de leur évolution dans la période 1942-1992, à l'échelle de la parcelle cadastrale et, d'autre part, à des en­ quêtes pour confirmer la gestion et préciser les usages et les objectifs des exploitants. Les premiers résultats montrent une stabilité remarquable de la surface boisée durant les cinquantes dernières années, interprétée comme un équilibre entre les boisements naturels et les déboise­ments artificiels liés à l'agriculture. Ces bois sont presque exclusivement des taillis exploités tous les 20 ans ou plus, fréquemment sous forme de petites sous-parcelles d'un ou de quelques hectares.On a également pu noter la nette diminution des longueurs des éléments linéaires (haies et ripisyl­ves) et du nombre des arbres isolés.

190. Decisions within Complex Systems: An Experimental Approach Using the STRATEGEM-2 Computer Game

Abstract

In 1989, John Sterman published his seminal paper, Misperceptions of Feedback in Dynamic Decision Making. His misperception of feedback hypothesis deals with the difficulty people have in managing complex environments even when they purportedly have perfect knowledge and have perfect information about the system. Over the years, several authors have attempted to consider how the human failures, which are a prominent part of the misperception of feedback hypothesis, can be reduced. However, these authors have achieved mixed results in attempting to make improvements to human decision support. It is the purpose of the current research to provide meaningful decision support to managers of complex environments. Specifically, the research used the STRATEGEM-2 simulation game and purposely developed a decision support method designed to improve human performance within a complex system. The experiment required subjects to make a single decision within a dynamic system where the task involved feedback delays, nonlinearity of system processes, positive feedback loops, and multiple cues. The decision support included a decision rule and a newly developed game instruction designed to improve participant knowledge and information about the microeconomy of the STRATEGEM-2 simulation. Results of the research have discovered that the new instruction and the decision support rule produced significant results in improving decision making. Additionally, this research demonstrates that the lack of participant motivation levels can mask decision support interventions. Subjects with high self-assessed motivation outperformed those subjects with lesser motivation levels.
