154. ‘Every step counts!’ - Effects of a structured walking intervention in a community-based senior organization on physical activity, fitness and well-being

Abstract

This study evaluated ‘Every step counts!’ – a ten-week, structured walking intervention in a community-based senior organization – on promoting physical activity participation, fitness and well-being among older adults (age ≥ 55 years). The intervention prescribed pedometer defined walks in weekly walking schedules. These were fitness-tailored and structured in walking load (intensity/volume) according to the principles of training progression. This intervention was offered as a social activity at meeting points of a community-based senior organization. Twenty-nine meeting points (n = 432) constituted the intervention condition. Ten meeting points (n = 148) formed the waiting-list control condition. Measurements were organized at intervention start (pre-test) and end (post-test). Intention-to-treat linear mixed models showed small positive intervention effects on physical activity, fitness and aspects of well-being. 162. Long-term effectiveness and mediators of a need-supportive physical activity coaching among Flemish sedentary adults

Abstract

This study examined the long-term and mediation effects of a need-supportive coaching program on physical activity. Sedentary employees (n = 92) of the university of Leuven received four months of physical activity coaching, based on the self-determination theory, by coaches with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology who are specializing in health-related physical activity (n = 30). The program consisted of a limited number of individual contact moments (i.e. an intake session, three follow-up contacts and an outtake session), either face-to-face, by phone or by e-mail. Self-reported physical activity, social support, self-efficacy and autonomous motivation were assessed in the coaching group (n = 92) and a control group (n = 34) at three moments: before the intervention (i.e. pre-test), after the intervention (i.e. post-test) and one year after pre-test measurements (i.e. follow-up-test). Results revealed significant 3 (time) x 2 (group) interaction effects on strenuous and total physical activity. Moreover, whereas the control group remained stable from pre- to post-test, the coaching group increased significantly in moderate, strenuous and total physical activity. Additionally, the coaching group increased significantly in mild, moderate, strenuous and total physical activity from pre- to follow-up-test, whereas the control group did not change. Bootstrapping analyses indicated that self-efficacy and autonomous motivation significantly mediated the intervention effect on physical activity from pre- to post-test, while social support significantly mediated the long-term effect. Abstract

Although nearly two decades of research have provided support for the social identity approach to leadership, most previous work has focused on leaders' identity prototypicality while neglecting the assessment of other equally important dimensions of social identity management. However, recent theoretical developments have argued that in order to mobilize and direct followers' energies, leaders need not only to 'be one of us' (identity prototypicality), but also to 'do it for us' (identity advancement), to 'craft a sense of us' (identity entrepreneurship), and to 'embed a sense of us' (identity impresarioship). In the present research we develop and validate an Identity Leadership Inventory (ILI) that assesses these dimensions in different contexts and with diverse samples from the US, China, and Belgium. Study 1 demonstrates that the scale has content validity such that the items meaningfully differentiate between the four dimensions. Studies 2, 3, and 4 provide evidence for the scale's construct validity (distinguishing between dimensions), discriminant validity (distinguishing identity leadership from authentic leadership, leaders' charisma, and perceived leader quality), and criterion validity (relating the ILI to key leadership outcomes). We conclude that by assessing multiple facets of leaders' social identity management the ILI has significant utility for both theory and practice.

176. Promoting Stair Climbing in a Worksite and Public Setting: Are Footprints Enough?

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of footprints on stair climbing in different settings.Design: Interrupted time-series design.Setting: A company (stair/elevator choice) and a mall (stair/escalator choice).Participants: Employees (n = 5676) and visitors of the mall (n = 12 623).Intervention: An intervention comprising 3 consecutive phases was implemented—(1) footprints leading to the stairs were stuck on the floor, (2) a health message referring to the footprints was introduced, and (3) passersby were congratulated for their increased stair use.Measures: Stair climbing was observed before (ie, baseline), during, and 6 to 13 weeks after (ie, follow-up) the intervention.Analysis: Proportions of stair climbers were compared using χ2analyses.Results: The footprints resulted in a closely significant increase in stair climbing in the company (from 27.7% at baseline to 31.2% in phase 1). However, they did not produce any effect in the mall. Introducing a health message yielded an additional 12.4% increase in stair climbing in the company and a significant 11.4% increase in the mall (22.3% in phase 2). Congratulating people did not further increase stair climbing. At follow-up, the proportions of stair climbers dropped but still exceeded baseline.Conclusion: Footprints tend to increase stair climbing in a worksite setting with a stair/escalator choice but not in a public setting with a stair/elevator choice. Adding a meaningful message seems essential to obtain stronger and longer term effects.

178. Group Status as a Determinant of Organizational Identification After a Takeover: A Social Identity Perspective

Abstract

This study investigates the relation between the perceived status of an organization after a takeover (i.e. post-merger status) on employees’ identification with this new organization (i.e. their post-merger identification). Respondents were 234 employees of a corrugated board producing company, which had taken over a smaller company eight months before. As hypothesized, post-merger status was positively related to organizational identification among employees of the lower-status pre-merger company, but they were not related among employees of the higher-status company. Also in line with the expectations, post-merger status was positively related to organizational identification among employees who had identified weakly with their pre-merger group, but not among employees who had identified strongly with their pre-merger group.

Abstract

Leung and colleagues have revealed a five-dimensional structure of social axioms across individuals from five cultural groups. The present research was designed to reveal the culture level factor structure of social axioms and its correlates across 41 nations. An ecological factor analysis on the 60 items of the Social Axioms Survey extracted two factors: Dynamic Externality correlates with value measures tapping collectivism, hierarchy, and conservatism and with national indices indicative of lower social development. Societal Cynicism is less strongly and broadly correlated with previous values measures or other national indices and seems to define a novel cultural syndrome. Its national correlates suggest that it taps the cognitive component of a cultural constellation labeled maleficence, a cultural syndrome associated with a general mistrust of social systems and other people. Discussion focused on the meaning of these national level factors of beliefs and on their relationships with individual level factors of belief derived from the same data set.

Abstract

• Fruit images caused dairy products to be perceived as tastier, but not healthier or more natural. • Fruit images on dairy product packaging increased expected portion sizes and product choices among adolescents. • A 0% sugar claim caused dairy products to be perceived as overall healthier, provided that the claim is noticed. • A 0% sugar claim did not impact expectations regarding portion size or product choice among adolescents. People evaluate products based on cues that are easily available to them (e.g., product packaging). Textual elements, such as nutrition claims, and visual elements, such as imagery, are often used to give products a favorable image. It is important to find out how these elements shape consumers' ideas about the product, for instance in terms of healthiness, naturalness and taste. This is especially important for young consumers who may depend quite strongly on these cues to infer meaning about the product. We therefore conducted an experiment to test the impact of two packaging elements commonly found on dairy products (i.e., fruit images and sugar claims). Adolescent participants (N = 240) completed a hypothetical choice task, and answered questions related to product perceptions and expected portion sizes. Our findings showed that adding fruit images on dairy packaging increased product choice and expected portion sizes, and that the latter effect occurred because fruit images made the products seem tastier. However, fruit images did not cause dairy products to be perceived as healthier or more natural. There was also some evidence that a 0 % sugar claim made the products seem healthier. Our results provide valuable insights for manufacturers and policymakers about the role of these two frequently used marketing strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
