Background: Alcohol consumption has been considered as a modifiable risk factor for dementia development and alcohol-related brain damage may further impair cognitive abilities in dementia patients. This study aimed to find out the differences in cognitive function according to current alcohol drinking in patients with self-perceived memory decline, including subjective cognitive decline (SCD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early Alzheimer-type dementia (ATD).Methods: From May 2018 to December 2019, retrospective chart review was performed in patients who visited CHA Bundang Medical Center for cognitive decline. A two-way analysis of variance with interaction test were used to analyze the impact of alcohol consumption on cognitive function between groups.Results: A total of 147 patients was classified into three groups of SCD (n=30), MCI (n=53), and ATD (n=64), and each group was divided into two subgroups of alcohol users and alcohol non-users, according to the current status of alcohol consumption. Background: Diverse extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins physically interact with stem cells and regulate stem cell function. However, the large molecular weight of the natural ECM renders large-scale fabrication of a similar functional structure challenging. Objective: The objective of this study was to construct a low molecular weight and multifunctional chimeric form of recombinant ECM to stimulate mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) for tissue repair. We engineered Fibrillin-1PF14 fused to an elastin-like polypeptide to develop a new biomimetic ECM for stem cell differentiation and investigated whether this recombinant chimeric Fibrillin-Elastin fragment (rcFE) was effective on human nasal inferior turbinate-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hTMSCs). Methods: hTMSCs were grown in the medium supplemented with rcFE, then the effect of the protein was confirmed through cell adhesion assay, proliferation assay, and real-time PCR. Results: rcFE enhanced the adhesion activity of hTMSCs by 2.7-fold at the optimal concentration, and the proliferation activity was 2.6-fold higher than that of the control group (non-treatment rcFE). In addition, when smooth muscle cell differentiation markers were identified by real-time PCR, Calponin increased about 6-fold, α-actin about 9-fold, and MYH11 about 10-fold compared to the control group. Conclusion: Chimeric rcFE enhanced cellular functions such as cell adhesion, proliferation, and smooth muscle differentiation of hTMSCs, suggesting that the rcFE can facilitate the induction of tissue regeneration.

Annual repeat influenza vaccination raises concerns about protective efficacy against mismatched viruses. We investigated the impact of heterologous prime-boost vaccination on inducing cross protection by designing recombinant influenza viruses with chimeric hemagglutinin (HA) carrying M2 extracellular domains (M2e-HA). Heterologous prime-boost vaccination of C57BL/6 mice with M2e-HA chimeric virus more effectively induced M2e and HA stalk specific IgG antibodies correlating with cross protection than homologous prime-boost vaccination. Induction of M2e and HA stalk specific IgG antibodies was compromised in 1-year old mice, indicating significant aging effects on priming subdominant M2e and HA stalk IgG antibody responses. This study demonstrates that a heterologous prime-boost strategy with recombinant influenza virus expressing extra M2e epitopes provides more effective cross protection than homologous vaccination.

Ca2+ overload-induced mitochondrial dysfunction is considered as a major contributing factor in the pathogenesis of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). However, the initiating factors that drive mitochondrial Ca2+ accumulation in ALD remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that an aberrant increase in hepatic GRP75-mediated mitochondria-associated ER membrane (MAM) Ca2+-channeling (MCC) complex formation promotes mitochondrial dysfunction in vitro and in male mouse model of ALD. Unbiased transcriptomic analysis reveals PDK4 as a prominently inducible MAM kinase in ALD. Analysis of human ALD cohorts further corroborate these findings. Additional mass spectrometry analysis unveils GRP75 as a downstream phosphorylation target of PDK4. Conversely, non-phosphorylatable GRP75 mutation or genetic ablation of PDK4 prevents alcohol-induced MCC complex formation and subsequent mitochondrial Ca2+ accumulation and dysfunction. Finally, ectopic induction of MAM formation reverses the protective effect of PDK4 deficiency in alcohol-induced liver injury. Together, our study defines a mediatory role of PDK4 in promoting mitochondrial dysfunction in ALD.

As global warming increases day/night temperatures as well as frequencies of heat waves, studying physiological responses in long-term heat stress is required for sustainable yield production in the future. In this study, effects of long-term heat stress on photosynthetic, morphological, and yield parameters of three cherry tomato accessions, HR17, HR22, and HR24, were evaluated. The experiment was conducted under two temperature greenhouse conditions, where temperature set-point for ventilation was 30 °C and 35 °C during the day for 57 days, respectively. Plants were harvested on the 35th days and 57th days after heat treatments, and their physiological and morphological characteristics and yield traits were measured. Under control conditions, HR17 and HR22 had 0.5–0.6 harvest index, while HR24 had 0.3 harvest index. On 35th days after heat treatment, although yield loss percentage of HR17 was high (43%), it produced the highest fruit yield among all three accessions. However, after longer heat treatment, HR24 produced the highest fruit yields among all accessions with the smallest yield loss (34%). Furthermore, yield loss was highly associated with reductions in nitrogen use efficiency and water content in plant body under heat stress. The results of this study will provide breeders with a new insight into selecting heat-tolerant genotypes in cherry tomatoes.

Since each human eye has different anatomical features, gaze estimation is a very challenging task. Although numerous studies regarding gaze estimation were proposed, there is a need for improving the preciseness in order to facilitate the application of the method to real-world scenarios. To accomplish this goal, I propose a novel training strategy for gaze representation learning. The proposed training method includes two training phases: the autoencoder-based representation learning phase and the gaze estimation network training phase. The proposed training strategy enforces the trained model to disentangle the gaze-related latent code and produce a more accurate gaze estimation. In addition, I also propose and showcase a real-world application that exploits the proposed method in order to prove the practicality of the proposed method. Through the experiment, it is proven that the proposed method shows an outstanding performance compared to other methods on the Gaze360 dataset.

Autism spectrum disorder is a common neurodevelopmental condition that manifests as a disruption in sensory and social skills. Although it has been shown that the brain morphology of individuals with autism is asymmetric, how this differentially affects the structural connectome organization of each hemisphere remains under-investigated. We studied whole-brain structural connectivity-based brain asymmetry in 47 individuals with autism and 37 healthy controls using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging obtained from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange initiative. By leveraging dimensionality reduction techniques, we constructed low-dimensional representations of structural connectivity and calculated their asymmetry index. We compared the asymmetry index between individuals with autism and neurotypical controls and found atypical structural connectome asymmetry in the sensory, default-mode, and limbic networks and the caudate in autism. Network communication provided topological underpinnings by demonstrating that the temporal and dorsolateral prefrontal regions showed reduced global network communication efficiency and decreased send-receive network navigation in the caudate region in individuals with autism. Finally, supervised machine learning revealed that structural connectome asymmetry is associated with communication-related autistic symptoms and nonverbal intelligence. Our findings provide insights into macroscale structural connectome alterations in autism and their topological underpinnings.

Background Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have been reported to reduce fibrosis in various tissues. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory role of ASCs on capsule formation by analyzing the histologic, cellular, and molecular changes in a mouse model of peri-implant fibrosis. We also investigated the fate and distribution of ASCs in the peri-implant capsule. Methods To establish a peri-implant fibrosis model, customized silicone implants were inserted into the dorsal site of C57BL/6 wild-type mice. ASCs were harvested from the fat tissues of transgenic mice that express a green fluorescent protein (GFP-ASCs) and then injected into the peri-implant space of recipient mice. The peri-implant tissues were harvested from postoperative week 2 to 8. We measured the capsule thickness, distribution, and differentiation of GFP-ASCs, as well as the cellular and molecular changes in capsular tissue following ASC treatment. Results Injected GFP-ASCs were distributed within the peri-implant capsule and proliferated. Administration of ASCs reduced the capsule thickness, decreased the number of myofibroblasts and macrophages in the capsule, and decreased the mRNA level of fibrogenic genes within the peri-implant tissue. Angiogenesis was enhanced due to trans-differentiation of ASCs into vascular endothelial cells, and tissue hypoxia was relieved upon ASC treatment. Conclusions We uncovered that implanted ASCs inhibit capsule formation around the implant by characterizing a series of biological alterations upon ASC treatment and the fate of injected ASCs. These findings highlight the value of ASCs for future clinical applications in the prevention of capsular contracture after implant-based reconstruction surgery.

Capacitors based on ABO3-type perovskite oxides show considerable promise for overcoming the limitations of nanoscale integration for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) devices. Among thermodynamically stable perovskite oxides, titanates (ATiO3) exhibit high dielectric permittivity in metal–insulator–metal (MIM) configurations. However, their ultimate properties remain under scrutiny for mitigating the large leakage current caused by their narrow bandgap (3 eV). Herein, substantially enhanced dielectric properties of an epitaxial SrRuO3/Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3/SrRuO3 MIM capacitor with a thin dielectric layer (10 nm) are reported. The dielectric/electrode heterointerface was engineered to realize a capacitor with low leakage current and high dielectric permittivity. A pit-free and stoichiometric SrRuO3 bottom electrode with atomically smooth surface was exploited for suppressing defect formation at the heterointerface. The critical roles of oxygen vacancies and substituted transition-metal atoms in determining the leakage current were accessed and a strategy for reducing the leakage current via interface engineering was established. Consequently, a dielectric permittivity of 861 and leakage current density of 5.15 × 10− 6 A/cm2 at 1 V were obtained with the thinnest dielectric layer ever reported. Our work paves the way for the development of perovskite-oxide-based capacitors in next-generation DRAM memories.

With the increasing adoption of medial epicanthoplasty or reconstruction procedures, the number of patients undergoing reoperations is also increasing. However, the surgical techniques useful for reoperations and the potential difficulties during reoperations have not been adequately elucidated. We aimed to describe the use of our modified reverse skin-redraping technique to improve cosmetic outcomes in patients who had previously undergone epicanthal reconstruction. From January 2014 to January 2021, we performed reoperations using our modified reverse skin-redraping technique in patients who had previously undergone epicanthal reconstruction. The main reason for the reoperations was cosmesis. The patients' ages ranged from 21 to 46 years (average, 28.7 years), and the follow-up periods ranged from 6 to 12 months. A total of 389 patients (311 females and 78 males) underwent reoperations, of which 324 patients (83%) underwent 1 reconstructive surgery and 65 (17%) underwent reconstructive surgeries more than twice after primary epicanthoplasty. The postoperative intercanthal distances could be increased or decreased depending on the preoperative design. After reoperation, 22 patients (5.6%) required additional reoperation. Reoperation of epicanthoplasty is technically challenging. The scarred round shape of the medial epicanthus during the reoperation poses difficulties, and the optimal technique to be used remains unknown. We believe that selection of an individualized restoration method that suits the purpose of surgery is important for patients who require reoperations. In this respect, we suggest that our modified reverse skin-redraping method is a suitable option for improving esthetic outcomes.

A new heteroleptic complex series of tin was synthesized by the salt metathesis reaction of SnX2 (X = Cl, Br, and I) with aminoalkoxide and various N-alkoxy-functionalized carboxamide ligands. The complexes, [ClSn(dmamp)]2 (1), [BrSn(dmamp)]2 (2), and [ISn(dmamp)]2 (3), were prepared from the salt metathesis reaction of SnX2 with one equivalent of dmamp; [Sn(dmamp)(empa)]2 (4), [Sn(dmamp)(mdpa)]2 (5), and [Sn(dmamp)(edpa)]2 (6) were prepared via the salt metathesis reaction using complex 2 with one equivalent of N-alkoxy-functionalized carboxamide ligand. Complexes 1–5 displayed dimeric molecular structures with tin metal centers interconnected by μ2–O bonding via the alkoxy oxygen atom. The molecular structures of complexes 1–5 showed distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometries with lone pair electrons in the equatorial position. Using complex 6 as a tin precursor, SnOx films were deposited by chemical solution deposition (CSD) and subsequent post-deposition annealing (PDA) at high temperatures. SnO and SnO2 films were selectively obtained under controlled PDA atmospheres of argon and oxygen, respectively. The SnO films featured a tetragonal romarchite structure with high crystallinity and a preferred growth orientation along the (101) plane. They also exhibited a lower transmittance of >52% at 400 nm due to an optical band gap of 2.9 eV. In contrast, the SnO2 films exhibited a tetragonal cassiterite crystal structure and an extremely high transmittance of >97% at 400 nm was observed with an optical band gap of 3.6 eV.

The second part of the genus Palpita from Laos is reviewed, with eight newly recorded species: P. aureolina Inoue, 1997, P. sejunctalis Inoue, 1997, P. pajnii Kirti & Rose, 1992, P. perunionalis Inoue, 1994, P. simplicissima Inoue, 1997, P. griseofascialis Inoue, 1997, P. nigricollis (Snellen, 1895), and P. picticostalis (Hampson, 1896). A key to the species of this group, and the illustrations of adults and genitalia are presented.

Here, we propose a new strategy that employs a functional separator composed of radical scavenging agents for removal of radical species in the cell. In detail, a radical scavenger, trimesitylborane (TRMSB), is embedded on the surface of nano-sized tungsten oxide (WO3) by a simple one-step process and the resulting nanoparticles are coated onto conventional separators by a dip-coating process. Our screening test performed by chemical reaction of TRMSB with a radical indicator (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) confirms that TRMSB effectively scavenges radical species via a chemical reaction, implying that the use of a WO3-TRMSB–functionalized separator would be effective for decreasing radical concentrations during electrochemical processes. In our electrochemical tests, the cell cycled with a WO3-TRMSB–functionalized separator exhibit showed both improved cycling retention compared to a cell cycled with a bare separator and improved physical and mechanical properties.

Background Flap congestion related with venous thrombosis is a major cause for microsurgical lower extremity reconstruction failure. Conducting dual venous anastomosis has been suggested to reduce risks for the adverse outcomes; however, its efficacy remains controversial. This study evaluated a potential association of dual venous anastomosis with the development of flap congestion in diverse clinical situations. Methods This multicenter study included patients who underwent microsurgical lower extremity reconstruction at two institutions. They were divided into two groups based on the number of venous anastomoses—single and dual groups. Their perfusion-related complications (PRCs), including total/partial flap loss, arterial or venous insufficiency, and emergent reoperation, were compared. Independent association of the number of venous anastomoses with the outcomes was evaluated. Further analyses were conducted using propensity score matching. Results In total, 225 cases were analyzed, of which 92 were included in the single group and the other 133 in the dual group. The two groups had generally similar baseline characteristics. The dual group presented significantly lower rates of PRC, including total/partial flap loss, flap congestion, and emergent reoperation. Multivariable analyses showed that conducting dual venous anastomoses was associated with reduced risks for the development of overall PRC and flap congestion. These associations were more prominent when restricting analyses for cases with chronic wound and trauma (vs. oncologic defects). Similar associations were observed in the propensity score matching analysis. Conclusion Conducting dual venous anastomosis seems associated with reduced risks for flap congestion in microsurgical lower extremity reconstruction, especially for cases with unfavorable conditions.

This study aimed to classify occupational hazards of ultrasonic scaling by factor and to identify the distribution of occupational risk levels of the study participants according to occupational hazards. In addition, the relationship between the general characteristics of dental hygienists and the occupational risk level of scaling was investigated.This study was conducted on 237 dental hygienists. Exposure frequency and the degree of work loss were investigated on a five-point scale for each of the 15 occupational hazards of scaling.Among occupational hazards, the proportion of high-risk individuals for biological hazards (32.9%) was the highest. Dental clinics (33.6%) were found to have a higher proportion of high-risk individuals than dental hospitals (16.5%) (p 0.05). The proportion of high-risk individuals was higher in the absence of an infection control coordinator (33.9%) (p 0.05) and infection control education in the preceding 2 years (28.6%) (p 0.05).To create a safe dental work environment, appropriate measures according to the risk level and measurement of occupational risk should be discussed.

Background One-stage reconstruction with “thin perforator flaps” has been attempted to salvage limbs and restore function. The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is a commonly utilized flap in breast reconstruction (BR). The purpose of this study is to present the versatility of DIEP flaps for the reconstruction of large defects of the extremities. Methods Patients with large tissue defects on extremities who were treated with thin DIEP flaps from January 2016 to January 2018 were included. They were minimally followed up for 36 months. We analyzed the etiology and location of the soft tissue defect, flap design, anastomosis type, outcome, and complications. We also considered the technical differences in the DIEP flap between breast and extremity reconstruction. Results Overall, six free DIEP flaps were included in the study. The flap size ranged from 15 × 12 to 30 × 16 cm2. All flaps were transversely designed similar to a traditional BR design. Three flaps were elevated with two perforators. Primary closure of the donor site was possible in all cases. Five flaps survived with no complications. However, partial necrosis occurred in one flap. Conclusion A DIEP flap is not the first choice for soft tissue defects, but it should be considered for one-stage reconstruction of large defects when the circulation zone of the DIEP flap is considered. In addition, this flap has many advantages over other flaps such as provision of the largest skin paddle, low donor site morbidity with a concealed scar, versatile supercharging technique, and a long pedicle.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), one of the most common pharmaco-resistant epilepsies, is associated with pathology of paralimbic brain regions, particularly in the mesiotemporal lobe. Cognitive dysfunction in TLE is frequent, and particularly affects episodic memory. Crucially, these difficulties challenge the quality of life of patients, sometimes more than seizures, underscoring the need to assess neural processes of cognitive dysfunction in TLE to improve patient management. Our work harnessed a novel conceptual and analytical approach to assess spatial gradients of microstructural differentiation between cortical areas based on high-resolution MRI analysis. Gradients track region-to-region variations in intracortical lamination and myeloarchitecture, serving as a system-level measure of structural and functional reorganization. Comparing cortex-wide microstructural gradients between 21 patients and 35 healthy controls, we observed a contracted gradient in TLE driven by reduced microstructural differentiation between paralimbic cortices and the remaining cortex with marked abnormalities in ipsilateral temporopolar and dorsolateral prefrontal regions. Findings were replicated in an independent cohort. Using an independentpost mortemdataset, we observed thatin vivofindings reflected topographical variations in cortical lamination patterns, confirming that TLE-related changes in the microstructural gradient reflected increased proximity of regions with more dissimilar laminar structure. Disease-related transcriptomics could furthermore show specificity of our findings to TLE over other common epilepsy syndromes. Finally, microstructural dedifferentiation was associated with cognitive network reorganization seen during an episodic memory functional MRI paradigm, and correlated with inter-individual differences in task accuracy. Collectively, our findings showing a pattern of reduced microarchitectural differentiation between paralimbic regions and the remaining cortex provide a parsimonious explanation for functional network reorganization and cognitive dysfunction characteristic of TLE.

This first part of the genus Palpita from Laos is reviewed, with seven newly recorded species: P. annulifer Inoue, 1996, P. kiminensis Kirti & Rose, 1992, P. munroei Inoue, 1996, P. hypohomalia Inoue, 1996, P. pandurata Inoue, 1996, P. indannulata Inoue, 1996, and P. parvifraterna Inoue, 1999. A key to the species group of the genus Palpita is provided, with illustrations of adults and genitalia.

A series of Ta(V) t Bu-imido/N-alkoxy carboxamide complexes, TaCl2(N t Bu)(pyridine)(edpa) (1), TaCl(N t Bu)(edpa)2 (2), Ta(N t Bu)(edpa)3 (3), TaCl2(N t Bu)(pyridine)(mdpa) (4), and Ta(N t Bu)(mdpa)3 (5), were successfully synthesized by metathesis reactions between Ta(N t Bu)Cl3(py)2 and several equivalents of Na(edpa) (edpaH = N-ethoxy-2,2-dimethylpropanamide) and Na(mdpa) (mdpaH = N-methoxy-2,2-dimethylpropanamide). Furthermore, complexes 3 and 5 were simply transformed to new dimeric structures [Ta(μ2-O)(edpa)3]2 (6) and [Ta(μ2-O)(mdpa)3]2 (7) with the elimination of the N t Bu imido group by air exposure. Compounds 1-7 were characterized by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that complexes 3 and 5 have a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry around the central Ta atom, with three monoanionic bidentate N-alkoxy carboxamide ligands and one t Bu imido ligand saturating the coordination of tantalum ions. TGA revealed that complexes 3 and 5 had superior thermal characteristics and stability. These complexes could potentially be applied as precursors for tantalum oxide thin films.
