- Abstract
This comprehensive revision of the invaluable reference presents a rigorous survey of pain and palliative care phenomena across the lifespan and across disciplines. Grounded in the biopsychosocial viewpoint of its predecessor, it offers up-to-date understanding of assessments and interventions for pain, the communication of pain, common pain conditions and their mechanisms, and research and policy issues. In keeping with the current public attention to painkiller use and misuse, contributors discuss a full range of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to pain relief and management. And palliative care is given expanded coverage, with chapters on interventive, ethical, and spiritual concerns.· Pain, intercultural communication, and narrative medicine.· Assessment of pain: tools, challenges, and special populations.· Persistent pain in the older adult: practical considerations for evaluation and management.· Acute to chronic pain: transition in the post-surgical patient. · Evidence-based pharmacotherapy of chronic pain.· Complementary and integrative health in chronic pain and palliative care.· The patient's perspective of chronic pain.· Disparities in pain and pain care. This mix of evolving and emerging topics makes the Second Edition of the Handbook of Pain and Palliative Care a necessity for health practitioners specializing in pain management or palliative care, clinical and health psychologists, public health professionals, and clinicians and administrators in long-term care and hospice.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
This is the third edition of a well-received book that reflects the state of the art in the diagnosis and treatment of acute abdominal disorders in pregnant patients, ranging from very rare to more common ones, such as acute appendicitis and acute cholecystitis. The book emphasizes the importance of rapid diagnosis to avoid serious consequences for both the mother and the fetus. The new edition updates recommendations, guidelines, and scenarios to provide support for all clinicians who may encounter such cases. The book includes new chapters, one of which is about non-operative management of acute appendicitis in pregnancy, an important topic that has not been addressed in previous books. The 2nd edition chapter on urologic emergencies has been divided into three, and the book now has 29 chapters in total, which have been significantly updated and reorganized. It provides guidance on different imaging modalities of rare pathologies that can occur during pregnancy, helping clinicians and radiologists to define underlying cases better. The book also includes significantly more colored and black & white images and tables. This new edition is an essential resource for clinicians who care for pregnant patients with acute abdominal disorders. The volume is equally valuable for general and abdominal surgeons, gynecologists and obstetricians, and emergency physicians who may be the first specialists to have clinical contact with pregnant patients.

- Abstract
In 1963 Professor Huggins! wrote'more than one half of the male population over the age of 50 suffer from benign tumors known as prostatic hypertrophy. Often an enlarged prostate is the only difficulty to cloud an otherwise tranquil old age'. This statement emphasizes two important features of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH); the frequency with which it occurs and its association with increasing age. The true incidence is difficult to determine as most data relate to selected groups of patients; moreover, the diagnostic criteria of prostatic hypertrophy are not clearly defined. Normality merges imperceptibly into abnormality, for even in men who are clinically normal, rates of urinary flow decrease with 2 increasing age. Despite these inaccuracies, incidence figures show the magnitude of the problem; Flocks (1963) 3 reported that 65% of American men over 60 years suffer from it and in a selected group of Danish men 43% had symptoms of the 4 disease ; similar figures are reported for the U ni ted Kingdom 5. At present most patients with BPH, who need treatment, undergo surgical prostatectomy which may be considered the usual treatment. The frequency of the disease alone, creates certain problems, for annually more than 30000 men are admitted to hospital in the United States with this as a primary diagnosis and with an ageing population the figures can be expected to increase.

- Abstract
This volume is based on the proceedings of the International Symposium on Bacterial Endotoxins held in Japan. May 11-14. 1988 and sponsored by the International Endotoxin Society and the International Society for Immuno pharmacology. Speakers and participants of this symposium provided new information concerning fundamental and clinical aspects of endotoxin research conducted over the last half decade or so. Advances have been made in understanding the structure and nature of endotoxin molecules and their effects on a wide variety of both cellular and subcellular aspects, of immunity. metabolism and physiology. both in vivo and in vitro. Endotoxins are constituents of gram negative bacteria. Since their original discovery in the nineteenth century. many laboratories studied their chemical composition. their physico- and immunochemica1 properties. as well as their pharmacological and physiological effects on the host. Much is now known about the chemical structure of the endotoxins. There is also a grow ing body of information concerning the multiple effects of endotoxins on the host including immune mechanisms. Some effects have been found to be benefi cial to the host and endotoxins are being used more frequently to induce important mediators of immunity as well as increasing resistance against infections by many microorganisms as well as inhibiting growth of tumors in experimental animal models and in man.

- Abstract
This Cumulative Index of Structure Reports is for the years 1961 to 1970 (Vols. 26 to 35). The Subject Index is arranged in strict alphabetical succession regardless of the construction of words, although in the listing of organic compounds certain prefIxes such as mono, 0-, m-, p-, D and L are disregarded. Nevertheless, some inconsistencies in the rendering of these prefIXes and others such as trans, cyclo and iso remain, and where a name is sought which contains these, it should be searched for both with and without regard for the prefIx. The Formula Index which lists Metals and Inorganic substances, is arranged in alphabetical order of chemical symbols. Organic compounds are listed in the Index of Carbon Compounds, which is indexed fIrst by C, then H with other elements following in alphabetical order of chemical symbols. A carbon compound not appearing in this Index should also be sought in the Formula Index. The scheme usually employed for the transliteration of Russian is given below. w. B. - Abstract
Life is a mix of good and bad happenings and sometimes terrible things happen to people. Trauma is evident across our lifespan; it is part of our lives. Trauma may not exert the same demands on the individual when they get on with their lives or experience other positive aspects of what life has to offer; however, it does not change its form from trauma to growth – it stays there etched into our psyche as trauma. In simple terms, growth occurs alongside the traumatic etchings. This is a book that will provide some answers to psychologists, counselors, social workers and mental health workers about what happens to people who are traumatized and how they get on with their lives; it also gives some excellent examples of how therapies can assist them in moving forward in life's journey.

- Abstract
Nutritional support of critically ill patients is a major treatment modality which will enhance recovery and shorten convalescence. New knowledge has emphasized that much of the organ dysfunction associated with sepsis and altered blood flow is related to oxidative injury. Specific nutrients are highly effective in counteracting these effects and their early administration may attenuate cellular damage and multi-organ failure. Patient outcome may also be enhanced by the route of feeding, administration of newer nutrient combinations, utilization of evolving methods of monitoring and the use of growth factors. This new knowledge has evolved to a new area of metabolic support which is addressed for the first time by a group of international experts. The topics presented and general conclusions are of major importance to the practitioners in this field, for they show, for the first time, a departure from the more traditional approaches of nutritional support in patients with life-threatening diseases.

Like the ground-breaking first edition, Pediatric Psycho-oncology, Second edition puts the child at the centre of medical and psychological care. It broadens the focus beyond treatment and cure to consider the quality of life of the child and their family. Written by an international group of pediatric oncologists and psychologists/psycho-oncologists brought together by an expert editorial team, it focuses on the real-life practical aspects of children undergoing treatment for cancer. This edition has been restructured and opens with a major section on Active treatment, which includes chapters addressing quality of life, pain, psychosocial aspects of treatment and interventions, art therapy and different fantasy-based techniques, palliative care, communication and education, as well as a new chapter on psychopharmacology. Shorter sections then discuss survivorship and care of the dying child, including a new chapter on bereavement. The final section comprises new chapters on ethical considerations and on addressing the emotional needs of children whose parents have cancer, as well as a case study on international collaboration. An appendix provides a comprehensive overview of tools for evaluation and assessment in pediatric psychooncology. This book is a highly practical resource that will be invaluable for all health care professionals looking after children and adolescents with cancer.

This book is a comprehensive text on the all-important psychosocial aspects of cancer in children. Edited by an experienced psycho-oncologist and an equally experienced pediatric oncologist, the book brings together an international group of contributors composed of pediatric oncologists and psychologists/psycho-oncologists. This unique balance of contributors gives the book a focus on the real-life practical aspects of children undergoing treatment for cancer. The book helps health care professionals, who look after children and adolescents with cancer, in dealing with the difficult and complex problems that face the child, his siblings and his parents. It deals with critical issues such as the neuropsychological impact of treatment, (including bone marrow transplantation), pain, quality of life in survivors, palliative care, talking to children and their families about death, and providing support to the dying. An important part of the book provides tools for evaluation and methods of psychological intervention. It is thus a very practical work for psycho-oncologists, pediatric oncologists, pediatricians, psychologists, nurses, social workers and art therapists dealing with the problems that children with cancer have to confront. A comprehensive book on the clinical approach to psychosocial problems of children with cancer Includes evaluation tools and psychological intervention techniques Contributions from both pediatric oncologists and psycho-oncologists highlight the team approach to the treatment of childhood cancers

- Abstract
Understand your back pain in a whole new way and break the cycle forever.Back pain is a serious problem, disabling over 5 million Americans and costing society $20 to $50 billion annually. Until recently both doctors and patients have misunderstood its true causes and have unwittingly fostered the pain cycle. Back Sense is the groundbreaking book that promises to change the way we approach the problem by proving that almost all chronic back pain is caused by stress and muscle tension, rather than by damage to the spine. On occasion nearly everyone experiences short term back pain--from sore or strained muscles. But for many who come to treat their back gingerly because they fear further'injury,'a cycle of worry and inactivity results, which actually increases muscle tightness and leads them to think of themselves as having a'bad back.'In reality, most backs are strong and resilient--built to support our bodies for a lifetime. Contrary to popular belief, truly'bad backs'are extremely rare. While seemingly abnormal disks and other parts of the back are, in fact, often present in those who suffer chronic back pain, they are also frequently found in those who have absolutely no pain whatsoever. Back Sense uses the latest scientific research to discredit the perfectly understandable, but counterproductive assumption that back pain is caused by these'abnormalities.'Drawing on their work with patients and studies from major scientific journals and corporations such as Boeing, the authors have amassed conclusive evidence proving that stress and inactivity are actually to blame. Since conventional treatments of back problems encourage excessive caution, most sufferers get trapped in a vicious cycle in which concern about pain and physical limitations leads to heightened tension, more pain, and further distress. The authors of Back Sense--all three are former chronic back pain sufferers themselves--have developed a revolutionary self-treatment approach that works. It allows patients to avoid the restrictions and expense of most other treatments. After showing readers how to rule out the possibility that a rare medical condition is the source of their problem, Back Sense clearly and convincingly explains how chronic back pain results from other factors. Building on this idea, the book systematically leads readers toward recapturing a life free of back pain.
