In the single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) system, the use of discrete cosine transform (DCT) instead of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) has shown improved bit error rate (BER) performance. Nevertheless, peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in the DCT-based SC-FDMA system is higher than that in the DFT-based system. This paper investigates the performance of various companding schemes to reduce PAPR in DCT-based SC-FDMA systems by considering carrier frequency offsets (CFOs). Simulation results, considering parameters like BER, PAPR, and power spectral density (PSD), are provided to find the best companding technique. Furthermore, the results have been validated in a real-time indoor channel using a wireless open-access research platform (WARP) hardware.

The Juglans regia root aqueous extract (JRRAE) phytochemical variability and the investigation of their antimicrobial, antibiofilm, insecticidal, and anti-leishmanial properties were studied. As a result, the JRRAE chemical profile revealed the presence of biomolecules using UV, HPLC, and FT-IR analysis. The investigations showed marked antibacterial activities, highlighted inhibited biofilm formation, induced lethality Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes (50%), and possess an insecticidal activity at 100 µg/ml. A molecular docking study was performed against S. aureus gyrase, S. aureus tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase, human peroxiredoxin 5, cyclooxygenase-2, and trypanothione reductase and confirmed that the activities are mainly due to coumarin, epicatechin, juglone, epicatechin, and epicatechin presence, respectively. The stability of these complexes is essentially related to the strong hydrogen bonds formed between the most active compounds and the binding site amino acids. The identified compounds were found to pass the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion property as well as five Lipinski’s rules with good drug-likeness and pharmacokinetic behavior.

Patients with new-onset left bundle branch block (LBBB) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) are at risk of developing delayed high-degree atrioventricular block. Management of new-onset LBBB post-TAVI remains controversial. In the Comparison of a Clinical Monitoring Strategy Versus Electrophysiology-Guided Algorithmic Approach in Patients With a New LBBB After TAVI (COME-TAVI) trial, consenting patients with new-onset LBBB that persists on day 2 after TAVI, meeting exclusion/inclusion criteria, are randomized to an electrophysiological study (EPS)-guided approach or 30-day electrocardiographic monitoring. In the EPS-guided approach, patients with a His to ventricle (HV) interval ≥ 65 ms undergo permanent pacemaker implantation. Patients randomized to noninvasive monitoring receive a wearable continuous electrocardiographic recording and transmitting device for 30 days. Follow-up will be performed at 3, 6, and 12 months. The primary endpoint is a composite outcome designed to capture net clinical benefit. The endpoint incorporates major consequences of both strategies in patients with new-onset LBBB after TAVI, as follows: (i) sudden cardiac death; (ii) syncope; (iii) atrioventricular conduction disorder requiring a pacemaker (for a class I or IIa indication); and (iv) complications related to the pacemaker or EPS. The trial incorporates a Bayesian design with a noninformative prior, outcome-adaptive randomization (initially 1:1), and 2 prespecified interim analyses once 25% and 50% of the anticipated number of primary endpoints are reached. The trial is event-driven, with an anticipated upper limit of 452 patients required to reach 77 primary outcome events over 12 months of follow-up. In summary, the aim of this Bayesian multicentre randomized trial is to compare 2 management strategies in patients with new-onset LBBB post-TAVI—an EPS-guided approach vs noninvasive 30-day monitoring. La prise en charge d’un BBG récemment apparu après une IVAC demeure controversée. Dans le cadre de l’essai COME-TAVI (Comparison of a Clinical Monitoring Strategy Versus Electrophysiology-Guided Algorithmic Approach in Patients With a New LBBB After TAVI, ou comparaison d’une stratégie de surveillance clinique, par rapport à une approche guidée par étude électrophysiologique et fondée sur un algorithme, chez des patients présentant un BBG d’apparition récente à la suite d’une IVAC), des patients qui présentent un BBG d’apparition récente persistant le 2e jour après une IVAC, qui répondent aux critères d’admissibilité et qui ont donné leur consentement sont répartis aléatoirement pour être suivis à l’aide d’une approche guidée par une étude électrophysiologique (EEP) ou faire l’objet d’une surveillance électrocardiographique d’une durée de 30 jours. Un stimulateur cardiaque est implanté chez les patients du groupe de l’EEP dont l’intervalle HV (temps de conduction dans le tronc du faisceau de His jusqu’aux ventricules) est ≥ 65 ms. Les patients du groupe de surveillance non invasive reçoivent un dispositif portable d’enregistrement et de transmission continue de données électrocardiographiques pour une période de 30 jours. Le suivi sera réalisé aux 3e, 6e et 12e mois. Le critère d’évaluation principal est un paramètre composite conçu afin de saisir le bienfait clinique net. Il comprend les conséquences majeures des deux stratégies chez les patients présentant un BBG d’apparition récente après une IVAC, comme suit : (i) mort subite d’origine cardiaque; (ii) syncope; (iii) trouble de la conduction auriculoventriculaire nécessitant la pose d’un stimulateur cardiaque (pour une indication de classe I ou IIa); et (iv) complications relatives au stimulateur cardiaque ou à l’EEP. L’essai intègre une conception bayésienne avec une répartition aléatoire (dans un rapport initial de 1:1) antérieure non informative adaptée aux résultats et deux analyses intermédiaires définies au préalable lorsque 25 % et 50 % du nombre anticipé des critères d’évaluation principaux seront atteints. L’essai est axé sur les événements, et la limite supérieure anticipée pour atteindre 77 événements relatifs aux critères d’évaluation principaux sur 12 mois de suivi est de 452 patients. En résumé, l’objectif de cet essai bayésien multicentrique à répartition aléatoire est de comparer deux stratégies de prise en charge de patients présentant un BBG d’apparition récente après une IVAC, soit une approche guidée par une EEP, par rapport à une surveillance non invasive de 30 jours. Metacognitive awareness of reading strategy has a significant impact on language learning. It addresses how students organize context-based interactions and how they may employ reading comprehension strategies. Saudi students of English still face reading comprehension issues that significantly affect their overall language learning. Therefore, this mixed method study sought to assess Saudi English students’ metacognitive awareness of reading strategies, determine whether gender and university level affect their use of these strategies, and explore English instructors’ views on this issue. Two instruments were used to achieve these objectives. Two hundred ten students were surveyed for quantitative data. 15 English instructors were interviewed in a semi-structured manner for qualitative data. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to analyze the quantitative data gathered, while pattern matching and thematic content analysis were applied to analyze the qualitative data. The results demonstrated that Saudi EFL students’ metacognitive awareness of reading methods was generally moderate. This awareness was moderate regarding the use of global reading strategies and low regarding support and problem-solving strategies. The metacognitive awareness levels for global strategies vary significantly by gender, in favour of females. Senior and junior university students had better global and support reading methods than freshmen. The qualitative data from the interview supported the quantitative data suggesting Saudi EFL students had low to moderate metacognitive awareness. Their low-to-moderate level explains their poor reading comprehension. Based on these findings, limitations and recommendations are given.

This research can be considered as the first complete survey for the valorization of new olive genotypes cultivated in the South-East of Tunisia as well as their oils. The study aimed to characterize the phytochemical composition of virgin olive oil produced from two olive cultivars, namely Nourgou and Gousalani. The pomological characterization of fruits, the quality criteria and the phytochemical profile were quantified. Additionally, antioxidant activity was evaluated using Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) tests to also obtain a bioactive characterization of these monovarietal olive oils. The obtained results revealed that the analyzed olive oils samples can be classified into Extra Virgin category (EVOO) according to the regulated physicochemical characteristics. Our findings showed a significant variability in the chemical parameters of the analyzed EVOO likely associated with the genetic potential, mainly for chlorophylls contents (1.37–1.64 mg/kg), in carotenoids pigments (3.97–10.86 mg/kg), in α-tocopherol (175.59–186.87 mg/kg), in sterols (1036.4–1931.4 mg/kg) in oleic acid (65.33–68.73%), in palmitic acid (C16:0) (13.32–17.48%), in linoleic acid (C18:2) (11.06–13.47%). Additionally, the HPLC-MS/MS analysis showed that the two EVOOs analyzed contained appreciable amounts of total polyphenols, ranging from 348.03 up to 516.16 mg/kg, in Nourgou and Gousalani oils, respectively. Regarding the individual phenolic compounds, the EVOO samples were mainly characterized by phenolic alcohols, phenolic acids, secoiridoids, verbascoside, flavonoids and phenolic aldehydes. The prevalent simple phenolics detected were secoiridoids with the dominance of the oleuropein aglycone in Gousalani oil. In addition, findings from in vitro antioxidant assays (FRAP and ORAC) revealed that the two studied oils possessed a powerful antiradical activity and a good reducing power capacity. In conclusion, these new EVOOs exhibited a superior quality compared to other Tunisian varieties, considering their antiradical activity and reducing power capacity.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze the poetics of textual thresholds in the poetry of Ahcene El-Kharrat (1989-2019), to query their various dimensions, connotations and artistic features, based on the assumption that contemporary poetic text is no longer just a set of poems nicely written and collected in a book, but rather a mosaic of written texts, para (meta) texts, and thresholds related to their hypertext. The thresholds’ role is vital. Its importance cannot be ignored while formulating the general poetic context of the poem. The latter cannot reach completeness without its textual thresholds that opens up new poetic and artistic perspectives. We will shed light, in this analytical and intertextual research, on the thresholds of the poems in the collections of the Algerian poet Ahcene El-Kharrat entitled: Nabdh-al-faji’a (Pulse of Bereavement), Basar Al-Turab (Sight of the earth) and Shatah Al-darawishes (the Dervishes’ imagination). Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has emerged as a viable treatment for aortic valve disease, including low-risk patients. However, as TAVR usage increases, concerns about long-term durability and the potential for addition interventions have arisen. Transcatheter aortic valve (TAV)-in-TAV procedures have shown promise in selected patients in numerous registries, offering a less morbid alternative to TAVR explantation. In this review, the authors aimed to comprehensively review the experience surrounding TAV-in-TAV, summarize available data, discuss pre-procedural planning, highlight associated challenges, emphasize the importance of coronary obstruction assessment and provide insights into the future of this technique.

IntroductionSince 1999, Tunisia has experienced multiple occurrences of Bluetongue (BT) outbreaks, leading to numerous reported cases of infection and mortality in flocks. The re-emergence of the disease in 2020 caused substantial economic losses in cattle, attributed to the incursion of serotype BTV-4.MethodsTo evaluate the economic impact of the recent BT episode, we conducted a retrospective study on outbreaks that occurred in Tunisia between August and November 2020, focusing on the impact at the owner’s level and its effects on both small ruminants and cattle. A total of 234 ruminant farms (sheep, cattle, and mixed) were randomly selected across Tunisian governorates and included in the study to estimate both the direct and indirect costs of these outbreaks.ResultsTotal costs were calculated as the sum of losses and expenditures resulting from the BT outbreaks. At the animal level, total losses were estimated to range between 116.280 and 207.086 TND for one infected ewe (€33.721 and 60.055). For one lactating cow, costs varied between 2,590.724 and 3,171.107 TND (€751.310 and 919.621). In cattle, exposure to BTV led to a daily unit milk yield decrease of 12.50 to 14.66 L over an average period of 5 months. Diseased sheep experienced weight loss ranging between 4 and 10 kg during the BT outbreaks. The total mean cost of the 2020 BT outbreak in Tunisian investigated farms was estimated at 1,935 million TND (million €561.15) (range: 1,489 and 2,474 million TND; 431.81 and million €717.46). The most influential costs of the total BT outbreaks were the decrease in milk yield, mortality, and veterinary treatment.DiscussionThis study gives valuable insights on the economic impact of the incursion of a new serotype of BT in a naive population in Tunisia. Considering the substantial costs incurred, it is imperative that this disease receives increased attention from stakeholders, including animal owners, veterinary services, practitioners, and decision-makers.

BackgroundIn the past two decades, extracorporeal resuscitation (ECPR) has been increasingly used in the management of refractory cardiac arrest (CA) patients. Decision algorithms have been used to guide the care such patients, but the effectiveness of such decision-making tools is not well described. The aim of this study was to compare the rate of survival with a good neurologic outcome of patients treated with ECPR meeting all criteria of a clinical decision-making tool for the initiation of ECPR to those for whom ECPR was implemented outside of the algorithm.MethodsAll patients who underwent E-CPR between January 2014 and December 2021 at the Montreal Heart Institute were included in this retrospective analysis. We dichotomized the cohort according to adherence or non-adherence with the ECPR decision-making tool, which included the following criteria: age ≤65 years, initial shockable rhythm, no-flow time

The purpose of this paper is to obtain a model that quickly predicts springback in the three-point bending process of steel / PUR / steel sandwich panels. Firstly, based on the finite element simulation, the springback behavior for different punch radius, length between supports, and foam thickness is established. The results obtained by the finite element analysis show a satisfactory agreement with the experimental results. Secondly, three machine learning approaches are applied, including linear regression (LR), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM) in order to predict the springback of sandwich panels in the three-point bending process. The performance of these approaches is investigated by using some statistical tools like mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and coefficient of determination (R2). The obtained results show that the ANN approach is the best model for predicting the springback of sandwich panels when considering accuracy.

Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of patients supported with Impella (CP/5.0) or venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) for cardiogenic shock according to shock phenotype. The primary end point was 30-day survival. Methods: A retrospective study of patients supported with Impella (CP/5.0) or VA-ECMO between 2010 and 2020 was performed. Patients were grouped according to 1 of 2 shock phenotypes: isolated left ventricular (LV) dysfunction versus biventricular dysfunction or multiple organ failure (MOF). The local practice favors Impella for isolated LV dysfunction and VA-ECMO for biventricular dysfunction or MOF. Results: Among the 75 patients included, 17 (23%) had isolated LV dysfunction. Patients with biventricular dysfunction or MOF had a greater median lactate level compared with those with isolated LV dysfunction (7.9 [2.9-11.8] vs 3.8 [1.1-5.8] mmol/L, respectively). Among patients with isolated LV dysfunction, 30-day survival was 46% for the Impella group (n = 13) and 75% for VA-ECMO (n = 4). Among patients with biventricular dysfunction or MOF, 30-day survival was 9% for the Impella group (n = 11) and 28% for VA-ECMO (n = 47). Patients supported with Impella 5.0 had better 30-day survival compared with those supported with Impella CP, for both shock phenotypes (83% vs 14% and 14% vs 0%, respectively). Conclusions: In this small cohort, patients supported with Impella for isolated LV dysfunction and VA-ECMO for biventricular dysfunction or MOF had acceptable survival at 30 days. Patients with biventricular dysfunction or MOF who were supported by Impella had the lowest survival rates. Patients with isolated LV dysfunction who were supported with VA-ECMO had good 30-day survival.

AbstractCork oak (Quercus suber L.) is one of the most important Mediterranean forest tree species, and the Maâmora forest-Morocco is considered to be the world largest cork oak stand. Clonal propagation of Quercus suber via somatic embryogenesis is an alternative to conventional tree propagation methods. However, complete maturation of somatic embryos is considered the major bottleneck for mass propagation of Quercus suber during somatic embryogenesis. This study focuses on influences of cytokinins on secondary somatic embryogenesis. Cytokinins showed a negative effect on the induction of secondary somatic embryogenesis. For the various concentrations tested, the number of secondary somatic embryos was significantly reduced except in the case with low dose of 2iP, which showed a slight increase. Abscisic acid (ABA) may be beneficial at low concentrations between 0.3 and 0.5 mg/l. The best number of secondary embryos was given at 0.5 mg/l ABA with an average number of 5 embryos from each primary embryo, which represents a slight increase below 10% compared to control medium. Also, we found that the number of responsive embryos presenting secondary somatic embryos based on their cotyledons decreased once adding ABA. Phenylurea derivatives TDZ and DPU do not promoted the process of secondary somatic embryogenesis. DPU showed no significant effect with a similar response to that of the control medium and TDZ showed an inhibitory effect. Gibberellic acid (GA3) partially blocked the process of somatic embryos multiplication, but promoted remarkably the germination of cotyledonary embryos without requesting a particular protocol. Our results provide a new insight into embryo development, establishing the basis for further research toward improvement of secondary somatic embryogenesis in Moroccan cork oak.

Background: During the last decade, vitamin D (VitD) has become a topic of interest in immune regulation, especially in multiple sclerosis (MS) disease. Amongst the wide range of effects reported for this vitamin on the immune system, a regulatory role on cytokines production has been described. Our aim is to analyze the status of VitD and its correlation with the circulating inflammation and the intrathecal humoral response during MS. Methods: We analyzed samples of 318 individuals: 108 MS patients and 210 controls. Determination of 25-(OH) VitD3 level in serum was made using electrochemiluminescence method. Circulating inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-a, IL12p70 and IL-1b) were investigated using Cytometer Bead Array Technology. The central humoral response was characterized using CSF isofocusing test and IgG Index calculation. Results: As expected, mean value of VitD was significantly lower in MS group (26 nmol/L) than in control group (34.75 nmol/L) (p=0.002), with a severe deficiency in 67% of MS patients. Mean value of VitD was significantly lower in MS female patients. Regarding cytokines, mean value of TNFa was significantly higher in MS patients with oligoclonal bands of IgG in the CSF. IL6 was positively correlated with IgG level in serum of MS patients. Conclusions: Our results support the association of VitD deficiency with MS, especially in female patients of our region. However, the vitamin level seems to not correlate with inflammatory cytokines nor with disability. Interestingly, TNFa and IL6 levels were correlated with the intrathecal synthesis of IgG and the circulating IgG level, respectively.

Growing evidence suggests that oxidative stress is a major cause of male infertility. Spermatozoa are highly sensitive cells due to the vulnerability of their membrane fatty acids and the diminished antioxidant defense. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) impact multiple signaling pathways involved in mitochondrial dysfunction, hormonal unbalance and semen quality decline. The origin of ROS is diverse, including generated normal cellular metabolism, environmental exposure, advanced paternal age and inflammation. Research has indicated that antioxidant supplementation can improve oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Moreover, it is widely known that antioxidant supplementation can enhance sperm quality and increase the pregnancy rate in couples undergoing fertility treatments. The current study highlights the deleterious effect of ROS and its impact on semen function. In addition, it contributes to the development of a clinical approach for the use of antioxidants in the management of male infertility.

In January 2022, significant mortality was observed among Cape cormorants (Phalacrocorax capensis) on the west coast of Namibia. Samples collected were shown to be positive for H5N1 avian influenza by multiplex RT-qPCR. Full genome analysis and phylogenetic analysis identified the viruses as belonging to clade 2.3.4.4b and that it clustered with similar viruses identified in Lesotho and Botswana in 2021. This is the first genomic characterization of H5N1 viruses in Namibia and has important implications for poultry disease management and wildlife conservation in the region.

This study investigates the performance of a wind–solar generator (WSG) in the Hail region of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) with a fractional order PI controller (FOPI) applied to the grid connection line. The proposed hybrid generator consists of a wind turbine with a PMSM machine and a PV panel connected to a secondary distribution grid by a DC link, three-phase inverter, and an RL filter. The line currents injected into the grid and/or loads are controlled by calculating the output reference voltage of an inverter and by the reference active and reactive requested powers. For this purpose, control loops around the RL filter were developed with fractional-order proportional-integral (FOPI) controllers, and a comparison with classic PI controllers was made. The system was simulated using the MATLAB/Simulink software. The results showed that the generator satisfied the power demand under the climatic conditions of the Hail region. They also demonstrated the good performance of the proposed controllers, which had good tracking accuracy and robustness to variations in wind speed and power demanded by loads in a very short time. The FOPI controller exhibited faster dynamic response and less overshoot than the classic PI controller.

The deleterious effects of chemical or non-chemical endocrine disruptors (EDs) on male fertility potential is well documented but still not fully elucidated. For example, the detection of industrial chemicals’ metabolites in seminal plasma and follicular fluid can affect efficiency of the gametogenesis, the maturation and competency of gametes and has guided scientists to hypothesize that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may disrupt hormonal homoeostasis by leading to a wide range of hormonal control impairments. The effects of EDCs exposure on reproductive health are highly dependent on factors including the type of EDCs, the duration of exposure, individual susceptibility, and the presence of other co-factors. Research and scientists continue to study these complex interactions. The aim of this review is to summarize the literature to better understand the potential reproductive health risks of EDCs in France.
