We present the results obtained with BeppoSAX observations of the three Composite Seyfert/star-forming galaxies: IRAS 20051-1117, IRAS 04392-0123 and IRAS 01072+4954. These sources belong to an enigmatic class of X-ray sources detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (Moran et al. 1996) which is composed of 6 low redshift galaxies. Their optical spectra are dominated by the features of HII galaxies while their X-ray luminosities (< 10^{42} ergs/s) are typical of Seyfert galaxies. IRAS 20051-1117 shows a 2-10 keV spectrum well described by a power-law with photon index = 1.9 and low intrinsic absorption. This result, the ratio Flux(2-10 keV)/Flux([OIII]) and the significant X-ray variability detected, clearly rule out a Compton thick nature of this source. IRAS 04392-0123 and IRAS 01072+4954, instead, have a BeppoSAX flux a factor of ~ 50-80 smaller than in the previous ROSAT observations, resulting in poor statistics, that prevents detailed modeling., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. We present the XMM-Newton observation of the merging system IRAS 19254-7245, also known as The Superantennae, whose southern nucleus is classified as a Seyfert 2 galaxy. The XMM-Newton data have allowed us to perform a detailed X-ray imaging and spectral analysis of this system. We clearly detect, for the first time in this system, a strong EW ~ 1.4 keV Fe emission line at 6.49+/-0.1 keV (rest-frame). The X-ray spectrum requires a soft thermal component (kT~0.9 keV; L(0.5-2) ~ 4E41 cgs), likely associated with the starburst, and a hard power-law continuum above 2 keV (observed L(2-10) ~ 4E42 cgs). We confirm the flatness of this latter component, already noted in previous ASCA data. This flatness, together with the detection of the strong Fe-Kalpha line and other broad band indicators, suggest the presence of a Compton-thick AGN with intrinsic luminosity > 1E44 cgs. Using a long (=150 ksec), broad-band (0.1--40 keV) BeppoSAX observation of the merging starburst system Arp 299 (=IC 694 + NGC 3690) we found the first unambiguous evidence of the presence of a deeply buried (N_H = 2.5E24 cm-2) AGN having an intrinsic luminosity of L(0.5-100 keV) = 1.9E43 cgs. We briefly report on an on-going spectroscopic study of hard X-ray sources selected serendipitously in 12 XMM-Newton fields. Results for the analysis of the 41 sources from the first seven EPIC observations have been discussed in a previous paper (Piconcelli et al. 2002, Paper I) where we found an absolute fraction of X-ray absorbed sources (~30%) lower than expected (~50%) by the predictions of popular CXB synthesis models at F(2-10)~5x10**(-14) erg cm**-2 s**-1. We present here the preliminary results concerning the whole sample including five new deeper XMM-Newton measurements increasing the sample to 90 sources. Even if still on-going, the present study appears to confirm and extend down to F(2-10)~10**(-14) erg cm**-2 s**-1 the above mismatch between observational data and theoretical expectations regarding the fraction of absorbed sources. Furthermore the sample average spectral index of 1.5-1.6 is steeper than the CXB slope indicating that the majority of obscured sources making the bulk of the CXB resides at even lower hard X-ray fluxes., Comment: Proceedings for the "X-ray Surveys: in the light of new observatories" Workshop (to be published in Astron. We report the identification of the optical and radio counterparts of the ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source XMMU J124825.9+083020 (NGC4698-ULX1). The optical spectrum taken with the VLT yields a redshift of z=0.43, which implies that the ULX is not associated with the nearby galaxy NGC4698. The spectral energy distribution calculated from the available data indicates that the source is likely to be a BL Lac object. Different hypotheses have been proposed to explain their properties: intermediate-mass BHs, Kerr BHs, young SNR, or background AGN. The XMM-Newton data presented here are the first X-ray observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4138. Although the galaxy has been pointed by ROSAT-HRI, it was not detected, with a flux upper limit of about 1.1x10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the 0.2-2.4 keV energy band. XMM-Newton performed the observation on 26 November 2001. The source is detected for the first time in X-rays with F[0.2-2.4]=1.0x10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1, in agreement with the upper limit of ROSAT. The source spectrum is typical of Seyfert 2 galaxies. We find heavy obscuration (N_H about 8x10^22 cm^-2) and a flat photon index (1.6). The source intrinsic luminosity is about 5x10^41 erg/s in the 0.5-10 keV energy band., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. High energy emission has been discovered serendipitously by the BeppoSAX/PDS telescope in the ~1.3 degree field of view around the Piccinotti source H0917-074. A re-pointing of BeppoSAX/NFI has allowed the association of this emission with the Seyfert 2 galaxy MCG-1-24-12 which lies within the original HEAO1/A2 error box of H0917-074. This is the first PDS serendipitous discovery of a Seyfert 2 galaxy and the first detection of MCG-1-24-12 in the X-ray domain. The measured 2-10 keV flux of MCG-1-24-12 is ~1 x 10^(-11) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1) compatible with the Piccinotti HEAO-1/A2 observation. This is a factor of ~6 greater than that observed from EXO0917.3-0722, originally suggested as the counterpart of the Piccinotti source. The 2-10 keV spectrum of MCG-1-24-12 shows the presence of Fe K_alpha emission together with an absorption feature at ~8.7 keV. At high energies, the Seyfert 2 still dominates and the observed 20-100 keV flux is ~4 x 10^(-11)erg cm^(-2) s^(-1)., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. to be published in A&A

We present a spectroscopic study of 41 hard X-ray sources detected serendipitously with high significance (> 5 sigma in the 2-10 keV band) in seven EPIC performance/verification phase observations. The large collecting area of EPIC allows us to explore the spectral properties of these faint hard X-ray sources with 2< F_{2-10} < 80 x 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2}s^{-1} even though the length of the exposures are modest (~ 20 ks). Optical identifications are available for 21 sources of our sample. Using a simple power law plus Galactic absorption model we find an average value of the photon index Gamma ~ 1.6-1.7, broadly consistent with recent measurements made at similar fluxes with ASCA and with Chandra stacked spectral analyses. We find that 31 out of 41 sources are well fitted by this simple model and only eight sources require absorption in excess of the Galactic value. Interestingly enough, one third of these absorbed sources are broad line objects, though with moderate column densities. Two sources in the sample are X-ray bright optically quiet galaxies and show flat X-ray spectra. Comparing our observational results with those expected from standard synthesis models of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) we find a fraction of unabsorbed to absorbed sources larger than predicted by theoretical models at our completeness limit of F_{2-10} ~ 5 x 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2}s^{-1}. The results presented here illustrate well how wide-angle surveys performed with EPIC on board XMM-Newton allow population studies of interesting and unusual sources to be made as well as enabling constraints to be placed on some input parameters for synthesis models of the CXB., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. An XMM-Newton study of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) has been performed in a sample of 10 nearby Seyfert galaxies. Eighteen ULX have been found with positional uncertainty of about 4". The large collecting area of XMM-Newton makes the statistics sufficient to perform spectral fitting with simple models in 8 cases. The main results of the present minisurvey strengthen the theory that the ULX could be accreting black holes in hard or soft state. In some cases, the contribution of the ULX to the overall X-ray flux appears to be dominant with respect to that of the active nucleus. In addition, 6 ULX present probable counterparts at other wavelengths (optical/infrared, radio). The imager IBIS on board INTEGRAL is composed of two detector planes: ISGRI (15 keV - 1 MeV) and PICsIT (170 keV - 10 MeV). Here we describe the data structure of PICsIT and the instrument specific software, including the standard scientific analysis. We present preliminary results of XMM-Newton observations of 5 Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), part of a mini-survey program dedicated to 10 ULIRGs selected from the bright IRAS sample. For 3 of them (IRAS 20551-4250, IRAS 19254-7245 and Mkn 231) we find strong evidence for the presence of a hidden AGN, while for two others (IRAS 20110-4156 IRAS 22491-1808) the S/N ratio of the data does not allow us to be conclusive. In particular, we have detected a strong Fe-K line in the X-ray spectra of IRAS19254-7245, with an equivalent width (~2 keV) suggestive that most of the energy source in this object is due to a deeply buried AGN., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Latex manuscript, Proc. We concentrate here on a subset of four galaxies, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, and NGC4565. In these galaxies we found six ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). We report here preliminary results from a survey of nearby Seyfert galaxies using the EPIC CCDs on board XMM-Newton. The total sample consists of 28 Seyfert galaxies, and constitute a well-defined, complete (B<12.5 mag), and volume-limited (D<22 Mpc) sample of Seyfert galaxies in the northern (Delta > 0 deg.) hemisphere. The survey has been initiated in June, 2001, and we report here the results for the 6 objects analyzed so far, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, NGC4138, NGC4565, and NGC5033. The main goal of this survey is to obtain a better and unbiased understanding of the ``typical'' Seyfert X-ray spectrum (e.g. the distribution of their absorption column density) in the local Universe. This is crucial to verify the predictions and, thus, to validate unified models, and is a fundamental parameter of synthesis models for the X-ray background. A companion poster (paper II: L. We present preliminary results from a XMM-Newton spectroscopic survey of hard (2 -10 keV) X-ray sources detected serendipitously in seven EPIC FOVs. All observations were performed during the performance/verif ication phase. The resulting sample consists of 39 sources with fluxes ranging from 3 to 80 $\t imes$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 2-10 keV band. Most of these sources (23 out of 39, i.e. 60%) are fainter than 8 $\times $ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The sources have been selected in order to obtain detailed X-ray spectral inform ation, that are unprecedented at such low flux levels and for such a large sample. To date we also have optical counterparts for 23 out of 39 objects, with 0.0058 $\leq$ $z$ $\leq$ 1.187. About 70% of the sources have spectra well fitted with a simple power law model with Galactic absorption. For 9 objects (five of type 1, one of type 2 and three normal galaxies) absorption in excess to the Galactic one is required. In this work we present the observation of the Mkn 463 field performed with the MECS instrument on-board BeppoSAX in the 1.8-10.5 keV band. The Mkn 463 field is an example of an extragalactic field crowded with absorbed X-ray sources: apart from the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mkn 463 and the well known QSO PG 1352+183 (the only object showing no absorption), two other objects are detected with a column density in excess to the galactic value. The first 1SAX J1353.9+1820 is a red QSO from the BeppoSAX High Energy Large Area Survey (HELLAS). The second 1SAX J1355.4+1815 is optically unidentified, but its X-ray spectral characteristics indicate that it too is an AGN hidden behind a large column density., Comment: 5 pages, 3 PostScript figures, LaTeX manuscript, new A&A file style included, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

In the present work we report the BeppoSAX observation of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 526A in the band 0.1-150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The combined analysis of all Narrow Field Instruments provides a power law spectral index of ~ 1.6 and confirms the flat spectral nature of this source. Although NGC 526A varies strongly in the 2-10 keV over period of months/years, its spectral shape remains constant over these timescales. An Fe K-alpha line, characterized by a complex structure, has been detected in the 6-7 keV range. The line, which has an equivalent width of 120 eV, is not compatible with being produced in an absorbing torus with N_H ~ 10^22 cm^-2, but most likely originates by reflection in an accretion disk viewed at an intermediate inclination angle of ~ 42 deg. The reflection component is however small (R < 0.7) and so it is not sufficient to steepen the spectrum to photon index values more typical of AGNs. Instead, we find that the data are more consistent with a flat power law spectrum cut-off at around 100 keV plus a small reflection component which could explain the observed iron line. Thus NGC 526A is the only bona-fide Seyfert 2 galaxy which maintains a "flat spectrum" even when broad band data are considered: in this sense its properties, with respect to the general class of Seyfert 2's, are analogous to those of NGC 4151 with respect to the vast majority of Seyfert 1's., Comment: 8 pages, 6 PostScript figures, Latex manuscript, new A&A file style included, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

We discuss BeppoSAX observations and archive ASCA data of NGC 7679, a nearby, nearly face-on SB0 galaxy in which starburst and AGN activities coexist. The X-ray observations reveal a bright (L_{0.1-50 keV} \sim 2.9 \times 10^{43} erg s^{-1}) and variable source having a minimum observed doubling/halving time scale of \sim 10 - 20 ksec. A simple power law with photon index of \Gamma \sim 1.75 and small absorption (N_H < 4\times 10^{20} cm^{-2}) can reproduce the NGC 7679 spectrum from 0.1 up to 50 keV. These X-ray properties are unambiguous signs of Seyfert 1 activity in the nucleus of NGC 7679. The starburst activity, revealed by the IR emission, optical spectroscopy and H\alpha imaging, and dominating in the optical and IR bands, is clearly overwhelmed by the AGN in the X-ray band. Although, at first glance, this is similar to what is observed in other starburst-AGN galaxies (e.g. NGC 6240, NGC 4945), most strikingly here and at odds with the above examples, the X-ray spectrum of NGC 7679 does not appear to be highly absorbed. The main peculiarity of objects like NGC 7679 is not the strength of their starburst but the apparent optical weakness of the Seyfert 1 nucleus when compared with its X-ray luminosity. To date NGC 7679 is one of the few Seyfert 1/ Starburst composites for which the broad-band X-ray properties have been investigated in detail. The results presented here imply that optical and infrared spectroscopy could be highly inefficient in revealing the presence of an AGN in these kinds of objects, which instead is clearly revealed from X-ray spectroscopic and variability investigations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Latex manuscript, Accepted for publication in the Astronomy and Astrophysics - Main Journal

The Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 7172 was observed twice by BeppoSAX narrow field instruments approximately one year apart. As found in previous observations, the source is variable on short time scales (hours) by a factor of $\sim$30%, confirming the presence of a type 1 nucleus at the center. A strong flux variability (by a factor of 2) on a longer time scale was observed between the two observations. Indeed, in November 1997, the lowest flux ever recorded was detected by BeppoSAX. The broad band spectra obtained with the BeppoSAX narrow field instruments show marginal evidence of a reflection component. This structure could explain the very flat spectra previously observed in the 2-10 keV band. An FeK$\alpha$ line was also detected in both observations. The line intensity appears to remain almost constant between the two observations even if the associated large errors cannot exclude some variability. In order to understand the problem of the origin of the line, data from previous observations, performed with other satellites, were also used. The scenario favored is one where the line is produced at a distance of approximatively 8 light years from the continuum source region, rather than having its origin in the accretion disk. In the present work we report the BeppoSAX serendipitous discovery of the type 2 AGN 1SAXJ2234.8-2541 in the MECS field of view when pointing at the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC7314. The source is optical identified with the bright (m_B=14.40) galaxy ESO533-G50 at redshift z=0.026. The source is clearly detected at energies above 4 keV but barely visible below this energy implying heavy obscuration intrinsic to the source. Spectral analysis indicates a column density of the order of 2-3 x 10^(23) cm^-2$ and a power law photon index compatible with values often seen in active galaxies. These X-ray characteristics suggest a Seyfert 2 classification for 1SAXJ2234.8-2541. Subsequent spectroscopy of the optical conterpart, ESO533-G50, performed with the ESO 1.52m telescope at La Silla Observatory, confirms the type 2 nature of this source and therefore its identification with the X-ray source. We also report the marginal detection of an iron line centered at 7.29 +/- 0.47 keV and having an equivalent width of 464 (+636 -398) eV; although marginal, this result is indicative of the presence of warm material in the source. If instead the line is associated to cold material, we estimate an upper limit to its equivalent width of 290 eV. The overall characteristics of 1SAXJ2234.8-2541 strongly suggest that the source is Compton thin., Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX, plus 8 .ps figures, accepted by A&A

Results from BeppoSAX observations of Compton--thick Seyfert 2 galaxies are summarized and reviewed, and their general properties derived and discussed. In five out of the seven observed sources, the nucleus is directly visible at high X-ray energies, where the photons penetrate absorbers with column densities in the range 1.1-4.3x10^{24} cm-2 (in the other two sources, NGC 1068 and NGC 7674, the nucleus is instead totally obscured at all energies, implying even larger column densities). In most sources there is unambiguous evidence of a reflection component from optically thick, cold matter, while in two (or maybe four) cases there is also evidence of reflection from ionized matter. For the sources with a measured X-ray luminosity, a comparison with the infrared luminosity is made; while in two cases (the Circinus galaxy and NGC 4945) the IR emission appears to be dominated by starburst activity, in the other three sources (NGC 6240, Mrk 3 and TOL 0109-383) it is likely to be dominated by reprocessing of the UV and X-ray photons emitted by an AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present BeppoSAX observations of the Seyfert 1.8 galaxy NGC1365 in the 0.1--100 keV range. The source was 6 times brighter than during an ASCA observation 3 years earlier. The 4--10 keV flux is highly variable during the BeppoSAX observation, while the soft (0.1-4 keV) emission is constant within the errors. Both a cold and a warm reflector and a cold absorber are required to explain the observed spectrum. The comparison between ASCA and BeppoSAX spectra strongly suggests that the circumnuclear material has a more complex structure than a simple homogeneous torus, with quite different absorbing gas columns along different lines of sight. A broad iron K_alpha line is also present in the spectrum, with the peak energy significantly redshifted. This can be explained by means of a relativistic disk line model. Alternatively, a warm absorption Fe line system with N_H ~ 10^23 cm^(-2) could account for the observed line profile., Comment: 8 LaTeX pages including 4 postscript figures. Accepted by A&A

We present the results of a BeppoSAX observation of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC4945 in the 0.1-200 keV energy band. The nuclear X-ray emission emerges above ~7 keV, through an absorber with column density N_H ~ a few 10^24/cm/cm. Its remarkable variability (doubling/halving timescale ~10^4 s) is not associated with any appreciable spectral changes, ruling out variations of the interposed absorber or changes in the primary continuum shape. The intense iron K-ALPHA fluorescent emission line is likely to be produced by the same nuclear absorbing matter. Our estimate of the intrinsic nuclear power suggests that the active nucleus dominates the bolometric energy output of NGC4945, if its nucleus has a typical quasar L_X/L(bol) ratio. This supports the idea that X-rays are the best energy band to search for absorbed AGN. The 0.1-5 keV emission is extended along the plane of the galaxy, and most likely due to a population of unresolved binaries, as believed to happen in several early-type galaxies. We studied with BeppoSAX the infrared luminous galaxy IRAS 09104+4109 over a very wide X-ray band from 0.1 to 80 keV. Our observations indicate the dominance of a thermal component at energies below 8 keV, which we attribute to the free-free emission from the intracluster (IC) plasma surrounding the source. Above 10 keV we find evidence for the existence of flux in excess with respect to the free-free IC plasma emission. This, together with the marginal detection of a neutral iron line at $\sim 6.4$ keV, gives a strong indication for the presence of an AGN deeply buried within the source. This component is best modelled by a strongly absorbed (N_H > 5 10^{24} cm^{-2}) power-law plus unabsorbed reflection spectrum (0.15

The LINER nucleus of the nearby spiral galaxy M81 was pointed by BeppoSAX, which caught it at the highest (2-10) keV flux level observed so far. The LECS, MECS and PDS data, extending over (0.1-100) keV, are used to investigate the physical similarities and differences between LINERs and AGNs. The continuum is well fitted by a power law of photon index \sim 1.84, modified by little absorption due to cold material. Superimposed on the continuum BeppoSAX detects a 6.7 keV emission line (confirming an ASCA result) and an absorption edge at 8.6 keV. Both spectral features are consistent with being produced by iron at the same high ionization level, and probably also with the same column density. So, we suggest that they originate from transmission through highly ionized thin material. Concerning the origin of the continuum emission, we do not observe signs of reflection from the optically thick material of an accretion disk, as usually found in Seyfert 1's (a 6.4 keV emission line and a broad bump peaking at 10-20 keV). The low bolometric luminosity of the nucleus of M81 is consistent with being produced by advection dominated accretion; in this case the X-ray emission should be dominated by Comptonization, rather than by bremsstrahlung, in order to reproduce the steep spectrum observed over the (0.1-100) keV band., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures included in the text. BATSE/OSSE observations of the high redshift quasar 4C 71.07 indicate that this is the brightest and furthest AGN so far detected above 20 keV. BATSE Earth occultation data have been used to search for emission from 4C 71.07 from nearly 3 years of observation. The mean source flux over the whole period in the BATSE energy range 20-100 keV is (13.2 +/- 1.06) x 10^(-11) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1) corresponding to a luminosity of 2 x 10^(48) erg s^(-1). The BATSE light curve over the 3 years of observations shows several flare-like events, one of which (in January 1996) is associated with an optical flare (R=16.1) but with a delay of 55 days. The OSSE/BATSE spectral analysis indicates that the source is characterized by a flat power spectrum (Gamma about 1.1 - 1.3) when in a low state; this spectral form is consistent within errors with the ASCA and ROSAT spectra. This means that the power law observed from 0.1 to 10 keV extends up to at least 1 MeV but steepens soon after to meet EGRET high energy data. BATSE data taken around the January 1996 flare suggests that the spectrum could be steeper when the source is in a bright state. The nuF-nu representation of the source is typical of a low frequency peaked/gamma-ray dominated blazar, with the synchrotron peak in the mm-FIR band and the Compton peak in the MeV band. The BATSE and OSSE spectral data seem to favour a model in which the high energy flux is due to the sum of the synchrotron self-Compton and the external Compton contributions; this is also supported by the variability behaviour of the source., Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, plus 4 .ps figures. accepted by Astrophysical Journal

This paper presents a BeppoSAX observation of NGC 7582 made during 1998 November and an optical spectrum taken in 1998 October. The new X-ray data reveal a previously unknown hard X-ray component in NGC 7582, peaking close to 20 keV. Rapid variability is observed with correlated changes in the 5-10 and 13-60 keV bands indicating that a single continuum component, produced by the active nucleus, provides the dominant flux across both bands. Changes in the nuclear X-ray flux appear unrelated to the gradual decline in optical flux noted since the high-state in 1998 July. The X-ray continuum is attenuated by a thick absorber of N_H ~ 1.6 x 10E24 cm^-2 covering ~60% of the nucleus, plus a screen with N_H ~ 1.4 x 10E23 cm^-2 covering the entire nucleus. Comparison of the BeppoSAX and ASCA spectra shows an increase in the full screen by N_H ~7 x 10E22 cm^-2 since 1994, confirming the absorption variability found by Xue et al. The increase in soft X-ray flux between 1994 and 1998 is consistent with the appearance of holes in the full screen producing some clear lines-of-sight to the broad-line-region., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. BeppoSAX observations of the nearby archetypical starburst galaxies NGC253 and M82 are presented. Spectral analysis shows that the 2-10 keV spectra of both galaxies, extracted from the central 4' regions, are best fitted by a thermal emission model with kT~6-9 keV and metal abundances ~ 0.1-0.3 solar. The spatial analysis yields clear evidence that this emission is extended in NGC 253, and possibly also in M82. These results clearly rule out a LLAGN as the {\it main} origin of the X-ray emission in NGC 253. For M82, the presence of an Fe-K line at ~ 6.7 keV, and the convex profile of its 2-10 keV continuum, indicate a significant thermal component. Contributions from point sources (e.g. X-ray binaries, supernova remnants, and/or a LLAGN) and Compton emission are also likely. Altogether, BeppoSAX results provide compelling evidence for the existence of a hot interstellar plasma in both galaxies, possibly in the form of superwind outflows from the disks of these galaxies. Order-of-magnitude estimates and some implications, such as the expelled mass and the energetics of the outflowing gas of this superwind scenario, are discussed. These new results also suggest some similarity between the X-ray emission from these galaxies and that from the Galactic Ridge., Comment: 17 Latex pages, 7 figures, uses psfig.sty. The direct nuclear X-ray emission of the ultraluminous IRAS galaxy NGC 6240 has been observed for the first time by BeppoSAX. It is seen through an absorber with N_H=2*10^{24} cm^{-2}. The 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity >10^{44} erg s^{-1} definitely proves that a powerful AGN is hosted in this galaxy, despite the LINER optical appearance. Assuming the typical L_X/L_bol ratio for quasars, our result implies that it is the AGN and not the starburst that dominates the energy output of NGC 6240., Comment: To appear in A&A Letters

We present a X-ray spectroscopic study of the bright Compton-thick Seyfert 2s NGC1068 and the Circinus Galaxy, performed with BeppoSAX. Matt et al. (1997 and 1998) interpreted the spectrum above 4 keV as the superposition of Compton reflection and warm plasma scattering of the nuclear radiation. When this continuum is extrapolated downwards to 0.1 keV, further components arise. The NGC1068 spectrum is rich in emission lines, mainly due to K-alpha transitions of He-like elements from oxygen to iron, plus a K-alpha fluorescent line from neutral iron. If the ionized lines originate in the warm scatterer, its thermal and ionization structure must be complex. From the continuum and line properties, we estimate a column density, of the warm scatterer less than a few 10^21 atoms/cm/cm. In the Circinus Galaxy, the absence of highly ionized iron is consistent with a scattering medium with ionization parameter U<5 and density about a few times 10^22 atoms/cm/cm. In both cases the neutral iron line is most naturally explained as fluorescence in the medium responsible for the Compton reflection continuum. In NGC1068 an optically thin plasma emission with kT~500 eV and strongly sub-solar metallicity is required, while such a component is only marginal in the Circinus Galaxy. We tentatively identify this component as emission of diffuse hot gas in the nuclear starbursts. The broad band 0.1-200 keV spectra of a sample of 5 Seyfert 2 galaxies (NGC 7172, Mkn 3, NGC 2110, NGC 4507 and NGC 7674) have been measured within the first year of the $BeppoSAX$ Core program. All sources have been detected up to \~ 100 keV and their spectral characteristics derived with good accuracy. Although the results obtained from the detailed analysis of individual sources indicate some ``source-by-source'' differences, we show in the following that all spectra are consistent, at least qualitatively, with what expected from a ``0th-order'' version of unified models. Indeed, a simple test on these data indicates that these Seyfert 2 galaxies are on average intrinsically very similar to Seyfert 1 galaxies (i.e., steep at E>10 keV) and that the main difference can be ascribed to a different amount of absorbing matter along the line of sight (i.e. different inclinations of our line of sight with respect to a putative molecular torus or different thicknesses of the tori)., Comment: 4 Latex pages, 6 figures, uses psfig.sty. We report on the first observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC4593 in the 0.1-200 keV band, performed with the BeppoSAX observatory. Its spectral components are for the first time simultaneously measured: a power-law with photon spectral index ~1.9; the Compton-reflection of the primary power-law; a moderately broad (>60 eV) K-alpha fluorescent line from neutral iron; and an absorption edge, whose threshold energy is consistent with K-shell photoionization from OVII. The amount of reflection and the iron line properties are consistent with both being produced in a plane-parallel, X-ray illuminated relativistic accretion disc surrounding the nuclear black hole, seen at an inclination of 30 degrees. Any cutoff of the intrinsic continuum is constrained to lay above 150 keV. BATSE Earth occultation data have been used to search for emission in the 20-100 keV band from all sources in the Piccinotti sample, which represents to date the only complete 2-10 keV survey of the extragalactic sky down to a limiting flux of 3.1 x 10^(-11) erg cm^(-2)$ s^(-1). Nearly four years of observations have been analyzed to reach a 5sigma sensitivity level of about 7.8x 10^(-11) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1) in the band considered. A new BeppoSAX broad-band (0.6-150 keV) spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mkn 3 is presented. The spectrum provides a direct measurement of a large, neutral column of gas with Nh~10**24 cm**-2 in the source direction. The source, as bright as 3C 273 above 10 keV, has a steep (Gamma~1.8) spectrum without any evidence of a high-energy cutoff up to at least 150 keV. At lower energies, the data are best modeled with the addition of an unabsorbed reflection component. Combining these data with previous Ginga and ASCA observations, the Fe K$_{\alpha}$ and reflection continuum indicate that the reprocessed emission is responding slower than the intrinsic continuum variations suggesting a size of the reprocessor >= 2 pc. Identifying such a reprocessor with a (close to edge-on) obscuring torus, the overall result fits well into unified models since, presumably, one can interpret the strong absorption as due to transmission through the rim of the torus and the unabsorbed (directly viewed) reflection component as due to reprocessing from the torus inner surface., Comment: 12 LateX pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

New BeppoSAX observations of the nearby prototypical starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 are presented. A companion paper (Cappi et al. 1998;astro-ph/9809325) shows that the hard (2-10 keV) spectrum of both galaxies, extracted from the source central regions, is best described by a thermal emission model with kT ~ 6-9 keV and abundances ~ 0.1-0.3 solar. The spatial analysis yields clear evidence that this emission is extended in NGC 253, and possibly also in M82. This quite clearly rules out a LLAGN as the main responsible for their hard X-ray emission. Significant contribution from point-sources (i.e. X-ray binaries (XRBs) and Supernovae Remnants (SNRs)) cannot be excluded; neither can we at present reliably estimate the level of Compton emission. However, we argue that such contributions shouldn't affect our main conclusion, i.e., that the BeppoSAX results show, altogether, compelling evidence for the existence of a very hot, metal-poor interstellar plasma in both galaxies., Comment: 5 Latex pages, 4 figures, uses psfig.sty. We report on BeppoSAX broad band (0.1-100 keV) observations of bright Seyfert 2 galaxies and discuss the results in the framework of the unified theory of AGNs. The data are used to probe Nh distribution in type 2 objects and to identify heavily absorbed (10^24 <= Nh <= 10^25 cm^-2) sources, which are particularly bright in hard X-rays. They also provide, for the first time, high energy spectral data on Seyfert 2s and tight constraints on the shape of their intrinsic power law continuum. The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 has been observed with BeppoSAX between 0.5 and 150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The PDS spectrum, having a photon index Gamma~1.86 is fully compatible with that expected from a Seyfert 1 nucleus. In the framework of unified models, the harder (Gamma~1.67) 2-10 keV spectrum is well explained assuming the presence of a complex partial + total absorber (Nh~30x10^22 cm^-2 x25% + Nh~4x10^22 cm^-2 x100%). The high column density of this complex absorber is consistent both with the FeK_alpha line strength and with the detection of an absorption edge at E~7.1 keV in the power-law spectrum., Comment: A&A Letters accepted, 5 pages

The Circinus Galaxy has been observed, for the first time above 10 keV, by BeppoSAX. An excess emission above the extrapolation of the best fit 0.1--10 keV spectrum is apparent in the PDS data. The most likely explanation is that we are observing the nucleus through a column density of about 4x10**24 cm-2, i.e. large enough to completely block the radiation below 10 keV but small enough to permit partial transmission above this energy., Comment: 4 pages. We present and discuss a "3-dimensional" diagnostic diagram for Seyfert2 galaxies obtained by means of X-ray and [OIII] data on a large sample of objects (reported in the Appendix). The diagram shows the Kalpha iron line equivalent width as a function of both the column density derived from the photoelectric cutoff and the 2-10 keV flux normalized to the [OIII] optical line flux (the latter corrected for extinction and assumed to be a true indicator of the source intrinsic luminosity). We find that the hard X-ray properties of type 2 objects depend on a single parameter, the absorbing column density along the line of sight,in accordance with the unified model. The diagram can be used to identify Compton thick sources and to isolate and study peculiar objects. From this analysis we have obtained a column density distribution of Seyfert 2 galaxies which is thought to be a good approximation of the real distribution. A large population of heavily absorbed objects is discovered, including many Compton thick candidates. Our results indicate that the mean Log Nh/cm^(-2)in type 2 Seyferts is 23.5 and that as much as 23-30% of sources have Nh > 10^24 cm^(-2)., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures, to be published in ApJ Supp

We report broad band (0.1-200 keV) X-ray observations, made by BeppoSAX, of a sample of bright Seyfert 2 galaxies: NGC7172, NGC2110, NGC4507, Mkn 3 and NGC7674. These spectra provide a better understanding of the effects of X-ray reprocessing by cold material in the source and allow to put tighter constraints on the various spectral parameters involved. In particular, the data are used to determine, with less ambiguities than in the past, the shape of the intrinsic continuum emission by means of the high energy data. We present BeppoSAX results on the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. Although extended, a large fraction of the X-ray emission comes from the nuclear region. Preliminary analysis of the LECS/MECS/PDS ~0.2-60 keV data from the central 4' region indicates that the continuum is well fitted by two thermal models: a ``soft'' component with kT ~ 0.9 keV, and a ``hard'' component with kT ~ 6 keV absorbed by a column density of ~ 1.2 x10**22 cm-2. For the first time in this object, the Fe K line at 6.7 keV is detected, with an equivalent width of ~ 300 eV. This detection, together with the shape of the 2--60 keV continuum, implies that most of the hard X-ray emission is thermal in origin, and constrains the iron abundances of this component to be ~0.25 of solar. Other lines clearly detected are Si, S and Fe L/Ne, in agreement with previous ASCA results. We present observations in the 0.1-100 keV spectral band of 8 Seyfert 2 galaxies, obtained by means of BeppoSAX. These sources were selected according to their [OIII] optical emission line flux, to avoid biases against obscuration on the pc scale. All sources were detected. All of them are weak X-ray emitters, and most of them are characterized by prominent iron lines at 6.4-7 keV (EW > 500 eV) and by a flat continuum, indicative of heavy obscuration along our line of sight (N_H > 10^25 cm^-2 in most cases). These results 1) provide further evidence in favor of the unified scenario, and 2) indicate that the average obscuration of type 2 AGNs is very likely much higher than deduced by former X-ray surveys. Preliminary results obtained from BeppoSAX observation of the starburst galaxy NGC253 are presented. X-ray emission from the object is clearly extended but most of the emission is concentrated on the optical nucleus. Preliminary analysis of the LECS and MECS data obtained using the central 4' region indicates that the continuum is well fitted by two thermal components at 0.9 keV and 7 keV. Fe K line at 6.7 keV is detected for the first time in this galaxy; the line has an equivalent width of ~300eV. The line energy and the shape of the 2-10 keV continuum strongly support thermal origin of the hard X-ray emission of NGC253. From the measurement of the Fe K line the abundances can be unambiguously constrained to ~0.25 the solar value. We report on the BeppoSAX observations of the gamma-ray blazar PKS 0528+134 performed in Feb and Mar 1997, during a multiwavelength campaign involving EGRET and ground based telescopes. The source was in a faint and hard state, with energy spectral index alpha=0.48+-0.04 between 0.1 and 10 keV, and [2-10] keV flux of 2.7E-12 erg/cm2/s. No significant variability was observed. The source was detected in the 20-120 keV band by the PDS, with a flux lying slightly above the extrapolation from lower X-ray energies. Comparing this low state with previous higher states of the source, there is an indication that the X-ray spectrum hardens and the gamma-ray spectrum steepens when the source is fainter., Comment: 4 pages, LateX, 5 figures (included). ASCA X-ray spectral analysis of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 04575-7537 is presented. The main result is the presence of a significant iron edge at a rest energy of 7.13^+0.21_-0.16 keV. The spectrum is flat (Gamma = 1.5) with a substantial absorption Nh = 10^22 cm^-2 and does not require any reflection component. There is also evidence of a narrow Fe Kalpha emission line, whose rest energy (E = 6.35^+0.08_ -0.03 keV) and equivalent width (EW = 130+-50 eV) suggest that the line originates from thick and cold matter. The intensity of the line and, in particular, the depth of the iron edge are too strong to be explained by simple transmission through the measured absorption column density. This strongly suggests that a model more complex than a single absorbed power law is needed. We propose an absorption model that we call "leaky-total absorber" which can explain the spectrum flatness, the iron emission line and the edge absorption feature and has also the advantage of having a straightforward physical interpretation in the framework of Unified models. In this model a thick absorber (Nh = 10^23 cm^-2), possibly associated with broad line region (BLR) clouds, partially (36 %) covers the source continuum with Gamma fixed to 1.9 as observed in Sey 1 galaxies. The escaping radiation is then absorbed by a column density Nh = 10^22 cm^-2, which can be attributed to the torus, seen through its rim., Comment: 7 pages, 4 ps figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics main journal

The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7674 has been observed within the BeppoSAX Core Programme with the onboard narrow field instruments between 0.1 and 100 keV. The broad-band spectrum shows four most relevant spectral components: a) a soft excess below ~2 keV; b) a prominent (EW~1 keV) Fe line; c) a flat (Gamma~1.1) 2-10 keV continuum; d) a 4.5sigma detection above 13 keV. The flat power law spectrum can be very well explained within the current AGN unified models assuming a steep (Gamma~2) intrinsic spectrum scattered by warm gas for the low energy band and totally reflected by optically thick cold matter (plausibly a molecular torus) for the high energy band. The case of NGC 7674 adds to the increasing number of so called "Compton-thick" Seyfert 2 galaxies in which the direct emission is totally absorbed and the X-ray luminosity is thus at least one or two orders of magnitude larger than what inferred from the observed flux., Comment: 6 pages, LaTeX, 2 PostScript figures included, uses A&A macros, accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the first detection above ~10 keV of the archetypal Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. This detection, obtained with the PDS instrument onboard BeppoSAX in the 20-100 keV range, confirms the hardness of the X--ray spectrum above a few keV (as indicated by ASCA observations and supports models envisaging a mixture of both neutral and ionized reflections of an otherwise invisible nuclear continuum, the neutral reflection component being the dominant one in hard X-rays., Comment: 4 pages, Latex, 2 Postscript figures included. We report the detection in the X rays of two weak Seyfert2's (NGC3393 and NGC4941) with the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX. These are among the first sources observed in a sample of 12 Seyfert2's which are being studied within the BeppoSAX core program, in an effort to probe the putative torus at high X-ray energies, calibrate an isotropic luminosity indicator for absorbed nuclei, and determine the distribution of torus thicknesses, Nh. Both a Compton thick spectrum, with a reflected power law and a large equivalent width iron line, and a Compton thin spectrum, with the intrinsic power law transmitted through a large column density absorber, provide acceptable fits to both sources, with some preference for the latter model in the case of NGC4941.
