While ferromagnets are at the heart of daily life applications, their large magnetization and resulting energy cost for switching bring into question their suitability for reliable low-power spintronic devices. Non-collinear antiferromagnetic systems do not suffer from this problem and often possess remarkable extra functionalities: non-collinear spin order may break space-inversion symmetry and thus allow electric-field control of magnetism, or produce emergent spin-orbit effects, which enable efficient spin-charge interconversion. To harness these unique traits for next-generation spintronics, the nanoscale control and imaging capabilities that are now routine for ferromagnets must be developed for antiferromagnetic systems. Here, using a non-invasive scanning nanomagnetometer based on a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond, we demonstrate the first real-space visualization of non-collinear antiferromagnetic order in a magnetic thin film, at room temperature. We image the spin cycloid of a multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ thin film and extract a period of $\sim70$ nm, consistent with values determined by macroscopic diffraction. In addition, we take advantage of the magnetoelectric coupling present in BiFeO$_3$ to manipulate the cycloid propagation direction by an electric field. Besides highlighting the unique potential of NV magnetometry for imaging complex antiferromagnetic orders at the nanoscale, these results demonstrate how BiFeO$_3$ can be used as a versatile platform for the design of reconfigurable nanoscale spin textures.

The science of cities seeks to understand and explain regularities observed in the world's major urban systems. Modelling the population evolution of cities is at the core of this science and of all urban studies. Quantitatively, the most fundamental problem is to understand the hierarchical organization of cities and the statistical occurrence of megacities, first thought to be described by a universal law due to Zipf, but whose validity has been challenged by recent empirical studies. A theoretical model must also be able to explain the relatively frequent rises and falls of cities and civilizations, and despite many attempts these fundamental questions have not been satisfactorily answered yet. Here we fill this gap by introducing a new kind of stochastic equation for modelling population growth in cities, which we construct from an empirical analysis of recent datasets (for Canada, France, UK and USA) that reveals how rare but large interurban migratory shocks dominate city growth. This equation predicts a complex shape for the city distribution and shows that Zipf's law does not hold in general due to finite-time effects, implying a more complex organization of cities. It also predicts the existence of multiple temporal variations in the city hierarchy, in agreement with observations. An experimental procedure for studying soliton gases in shallow water is devised. Nonlinear waves propagate at constant depth in a 34\,m-long wave flume. At one end of the flume, the waves are generated by a piston-type wave-maker. The opposite end is a vertical wall. Wave interactions are recorded with a video system using seven side-looking cameras with a pixel resolution of 1\,mm, covering 14\,m of the flume. The accuracy in the detection of the water surface elevation is shown to be better than 0.1 mm. A continuous monochromatic forcing can lead to a random state such as a soliton gas. The measured wave field is separated into right- and left-propagating waves in the Radon space and solitary pulses are identified as solitons of KdV or Rayleigh types. Both weak and strong interactions of solitons are detected. These interactions induce phase shifts that constitute the seminal mechanism for disorganization and soliton gas formation.

As mitigating car traffic in cities has become paramount to abate climate change effects, fostering public transport in cities appears ever-more appealing. A key ingredient in that purpose is easy access to mass rapid transit (MRT) systems. So far, we have however few empirical estimates of the coverage of MRT in urban areas, computed as the share of people living in MRT catchment areas, say for instance within walking distance. In this work, we clarify a universal definition of such a metrics, the "People Near Transit (PNT)", and present measures of this quantity for 85 urban areas in OECD countries, the largest dataset of such a quantity so far. By suggesting a standardized protocol, we make our dataset sound and expandable to other countries and cities in the world, which grounds our work into solid basis for multiple reuses in transport, environmental or economic studies., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables

Accurate prediction of the onset and strength of breaking surface gravity waves is a long-standing problem of significant theoretical and applied interest. Recently, Barth\'el\'emy et al (https://doi.org/10.1017/jfm.2018.93) examined the energetics of focusing wave groups in deep and intermediate depth water and found that breaking and non-breaking regimes were clearly separated by the normalised energy flux, $B$, near the crest tip. Furthermore, the transition of $B$ through a generic breaking threshold value $B_\mathrm{th} \approx 0.85$ was found to precede visible breaking onset by up to one fifth of a wave period. This remarkable generic threshold for breaking inception has since been validated numerically for 2D and 3D domains and for shallow and shoaling water waves; however, there is presently no theoretical explanation for its efficacy as a predictor for breaking. This study investigates the correspondence between the parameter $B$ and the crest energy growth rate following the evolving crest for breaking and non-breaking waves in a numerical wave tank using a range of wave packet configurations. Our results indicate that the time rate of change of the $B$ is strongly correlated with the energy density convergence rate at the evolving wave crest. These findings further advance present understanding of the elusive process of wave breaking.

Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) can form at the surface of oxides and semiconductors or in carefully designed quantum wells and interfaces. Depending on the shape of the confining potential, 2DEGs may experience a finite electric field, which gives rise to relativistic effects such as the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Although the amplitude of this electric field can be modulated by an external gate voltage, which in turn tunes the 2DEG carrier density, sheet resistance and other related properties, this modulation is volatile. Here, we report the design of a ''ferroelectric'' 2DEG whose transport properties can be electrostatically switched in a non-volatile way. We generate a 2DEG by depositing a thin Al layer onto a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal in which 1 percent of Sr is substituted by Ca to make it ferroelectric. Signatures of the ferroelectric phase transition at 25 K are visible in the Raman response and in the temperature dependences of the carrier density and sheet resistance that shows a hysteretic dependence on electric field as a consequence of ferroelectricity. We suggest that this behavior may be extended to other oxide 2DEGs, leading to novel types of ferromagnet-free spintronic architectures.

Two-dimensional (2D) Rashba systems have been intensively studied in the last decade due to their unconventional physics, tunability capabilities, and potential for spin-charge interconversion when compared to conventional heavy metals. With the advent of a new generation of spin-based logic and memory devices, the search for Rashba systems with more robust and larger conversion efficiencies is expanding. Conventionally, demanding techniques such as angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy are required to determine the Rashba parameter $\alpha_{R}$ that characterizes these systems. Here, we introduce a simple method that allows a quantitative extraction of $\alpha_{R}$, through the analysis of the bilinear response of angle-dependent magnetotransport experiments. This method is based on the modulation of the Rashba-split bands under a rotating in-plane magnetic field. We show that our method is able to correctly yield the value of $\alpha_{R}$ for a wide range of Fermi energies in the 2D electron gas at the LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ interface. By applying a gate voltage, we observe a maximum $\alpha_{R}$ in the region of the band structure where interband effects maximize the Rashba effect, consistently with theoretical predictions.

The airline industry was severely hit by the COVID-19 crisis with an average demand decrease of about $64\%$ (IATA, April 2020) which triggered already several bankruptcies of airline companies all over the world. While the robustness of the world airline network (WAN) was mostly studied as an homogeneous network, we introduce a new tool for analyzing the impact of a company failure: the `airline company network' where two airlines are connected if they share at least one route segment. Using this tool, we observe that the failure of companies well connected with others has the largest impact on the connectivity of the WAN. We then explore how the global demand reduction affects airlines differently, and provide an analysis of different scenarios if its stays low and does not come back to its pre-crisis level. Using traffic data from the Official Aviation Guide (OAG) and simple assumptions about customer's airline choice strategies, we find that the local effective demand can be much lower than the average one, especially for companies that are not monopolistic and share their segments with larger companies. Even if the average demand comes back to $60\%$ of the total capacity, we find that between $46\%$ and $59\%$ of the companies could experience a reduction of more than $50\%$ of their traffic, depending on the type of competitive advantage that drives customer's airline choice. We present a microscopic study of a doped quantum spin liquid candidate, the hyperkagome Na$_3$Ir$_3$O$_8$ compound by using $^{23}$Na NMR. We determine the intrinsic behavior of the uniform \textbf{q} $ = 0$ susceptibility via shift measurements and the dynamical response by probing the spin-lattice relaxation rate. Throughout the studied temperature range, the susceptibility is consistent with a semimetal behavior, though with electronic bands substantially modified by correlations. Remarkably, the antiferromagnetic fluctuations present in the insulating parent compound Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ survive in the studied compound. The spin dynamics are consistent with 120$^o$ excitations modes displaying short-range correlations.

In this paper we present LoCO AUV, a Low-Cost, Open Autonomous Underwater Vehicle. LoCO is a general-purpose, single-person-deployable, vision-guided AUV, rated to a depth of 100 meters. We discuss the open and expandable design of this underwater robot, as well as the design of a simulator in Gazebo. Additionally, we explore the platform's preliminary local motion control and state estimation abilities, which enable it to perform maneuvers autonomously. In order to demonstrate its usefulness for a variety of tasks, we implement a variety of our previously presented human-robot interaction capabilities on LoCO, including gestural control, diver following, and robot communication via motion. Finally, we discuss the practical concerns of deployment and our experiences in using this robot in pools, lakes, and the ocean. Understanding how interurban movements can modify the spatial distribution of the population is important for transport planning but is also a fundamental ingredient for epidemic modeling. We focus here on vacation trips (for all transportation modes) during the Chinese Lunar New Year and compare the results for 2019 with the ones for 2020 where travel bans were applied for mitigating the spread of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19). We first show that these travel flows are broadly distributed and display both large temporal and spatial fluctuations, making their modeling very difficult. When flows are larger, they appear to be more dispersed over a larger number of origins and destinations, creating de facto hubs that can spread an epidemic at a large scale. These movements quickly induce (in about a week) a very strong population concentration in a small set of cities. We characterize quantitatively the return to the initial distribution by defining a pendular ratio which allows us to show that this dynamics is very slow and even stopped for the 2020 Lunar New Year due to travel restrictions. Travel restrictions obviously limit the spread of the diseases between different cities, but have thus the counter-effect of keeping high concentration in a small set of cities, a priori favoring intra-city spread, unless individual contacts are strongly limited. Oligonucleotide-based agents have the potential to treat or cure almost any disease, and are one of the key therapeutic drug classes of the future. Bioconjugated oligonucleotides, a subset of this class, are emerging from basic research and being successfully translated to the clinic. In this review, we first briefly describe two approaches for inhibiting specific genes using oligonucleotides -- antisense DNA (ASO) and RNA interference (RNAi) -- followed by a discussion on delivery to cells. We then summarize and analyze recent developments in bioconjugated oligonucleotides including those possessing GalNAc, cell penetrating peptides, $\alpha$-tocopherol, aptamers, antibodies, cholesterol, squalene, fatty acids, or nucleolipids. These novel conjugates provide a means to enhance tissue targeting, cell internalization, endosomal escape, target binding specificity, resistance to nucleases, and more. We next describe those bioconjugated oligonucleotides approved for patient use or in clinical trials. Finally, we summarize the state of the field, describe current limitations, and discuss future prospects. Biocon-jugation chemistry is at the centerpiece of this therapeutic oligonucleotide revolution, and significant opportunities exist for development of new modification chemistries, for mechanistic studies at the chemical-biology interface, and for translating such agents to the clinic.

Weak lensing of galaxies and CMB photons through the large-scale structure of the Universe is one of the most promising cosmological probes with upcoming experiments dedicated to its measurements such as Euclid/LSST and CMB Stage 4 experiments. With increasingly precise measurements, there is a dire need for accurate theoretical predictions. In this work, we focus on higher order statistics of the weak lensing convergence field, namely its cumulants such as skewness and kurtosis and its one-point probability distribution (PDF), and we quantify using perturbation theory the corrections coming from post-Born effects, meaning beyond the straight-line and independent lenses approximations. At first order, two such corrections arise: lens-lens couplings and geodesic deviation. Though the corrections are small for low source redshifts (below a few percents) and therefore for galaxy lensing, they become important at higher redshifts, notably in the context of CMB lensing, where the non-gaussianities computed from tree-order perturbation theory are found to be of the same order as the signal itself. We include these post-Born corrections on the skewness into a prediction for the one-point convergence PDF obtained with large deviation theory and successfully test these results against numerical simulations. The relationship between the complexity classes $P$ and $NP$ is an unsolved question in the field of theoretical computer science. In the first part of this paper, a lattice framework is proposed to handle the 3-CNF-SAT problems, known to be in $NP$. In the second section, we define a multi-linear descriptor function ${\cal H}_\varphi$ for any 3-CNF-SAT problem $\varphi$ of size $n$, in the sense that ${\cal H}_\varphi : \{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}^n$ is such that $Im \; {\cal H}_\varphi$ is the set of all the solutions of $\varphi$. A new merge operation ${\cal H}_\varphi \bigwedge {\cal H}_{\psi}$ is defined, where $\psi$ is a single 3-CNF clause. Given ${\cal H}_\varphi$ [but this can be of exponential complexity], the complexity needed for the computation of $Im \; {\cal H}_\varphi$, the set of all solutions, is shown to be polynomial for hard 3-CNF-SAT problems, i.e. the one with few ($\leq 2^k$) or no solutions. The coupling between population growth and transport accessibility has been an elusive problem for more than 60 years now. Due to the lack of theoretical foundations, most of the studies that considered how the evolution of transportation networks impacts the population growth are based on regression analysis in order to identify relevant variables. The recent availability of large amounts of data allows us to envision the construction of new approaches for understanding this coupling between transport and population growth. Here, we use a detailed dataset for about 36000 municipalities in France from 1968 until now. In the case of large urban areas such as Paris, we show that growth rate statistical variations decay in time and display a trend towards homogeneization where local aspects are less relevant. We also show that growth rate differences due to accessibility are very small and can mostly be observed for cities that experienced very large accessibility variations. This suggests that the relevant variable for explaining growth rate variations is not the accessibility but its temporal variation. We propose a model that integrates the stochastic internal variation of the municipalitie's population and an inter-urban migration term that we show to be proportional to the accessibility variation and has a limited time duration. Spin liquids are exotic phases of quantum matter challenging Landau's paradigm of symmetry-breaking phase transitions. Despite strong exchange interactions, spins do not order or freeze down to zero temperature. While well-established for 1D quantum antiferromagnets, in higher dimension where quantum fluctuations are less acute, realizing and understanding such states represent major issues, both theoretical and experimental. In this respect the simplest nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet Hamiltonian on the highly frustrated kagome lattice has proven to be a fascinating and inspiring model. The exact nature of its ground state remains elusive and the existence of a spin-gap is the first key-issue to be addressed to discriminate between the various classes of proposed spin liquids. Here, through low-temperature Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) contrast experiments on high quality single crystals, we single out the kagome susceptibility and the corresponding dynamics in the kagome archetype, the mineral herbertsmithite, ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$. We firmly conclude that this material does not harbor any spin-gap, which restores a convergence with recent numerical results promoting a gapless Dirac spin liquid as the ground state of the Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet., Comment: 8 pages main text, 4 figures, 21 pages supplementary information

Similar to other electron correlation methods, many-body perturbation theory methods based on Green functions, such as the so-called $GW$ approximation, suffer from the usual slow convergence of energetic properties with respect to the size of the one-electron basis set. This displeasing feature is due to lack of explicit electron-electron terms modeling the infamous Kato electron-electron cusp and the correlation Coulomb hole around it. Here, we propose a computationally efficient density-based basis set correction based on short-range correlation density functionals which significantly speeds up the convergence of energetics towards the complete basis set limit. The performance of this density-based correction is illustrated by computing the ionization potentials of the twenty smallest atoms and molecules of the GW100 test set at the perturbative $GW$ (or $G_0W_0$) level using increasingly large basis sets. We also compute the ionization potentials of the five canonical nucleobases (adenine, cytosine, thymine, guanine, and uracil) and show that, here again, a significant improvement is obtained., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures (supporting information available)

Intuitively, crest speeds of water waves are assumed to match their phase velocities. However, this is generally not the case for natural waves within unsteady wave groups. This motivates our study, which presents new insights into the generic behavior of crest speeds of linear to highly nonlinear unsteady waves. While our major focus is on gravity waves where a generic crest slowdown occurs cyclically, results for capillary-dominated waves are also discussed, for which crests cyclically speed up. This curious phenomenon arises when the theoretical constraint of steadiness is relaxed, allowing waves to change their form, or shape. In particular, a kinematic analysis of both simulated and observed open ocean gravity waves reveals a forward-to-backward leaning cycle for each individual crest within a wave group. This is clearly manifest during the focusing of dominant wave groups essentially due to the dispersive nature of waves. It occurs routinely for focusing linear (vanishingly small steepness) wave groups, and it is enhanced as the wave spectrum broadens. It is found to be relatively insensitive to the degree of phase coherence and focusing of wave groups. The nonlinear nature of waves limits the crest slowdown. This reduces when gravity waves become less dispersive, either as they steepen or as they propagate over finite water depths. This is demonstrated by numerical simulations of the unsteady evolution of 2D and 3D dispersive gravity wave packets in both deep and intermediate water depths, and by open ocean space-time measurements.

Within the context of hybrid quantum-classical optimization, gradient descent based optimizers typically require the evaluation of expectation values with respect to the outcome of parameterized quantum circuits. In this work, we explore the consequences of the prior observation that estimation of these quantities on quantum hardware results in a form of stochastic gradient descent optimization. We formalize this notion, which allows us to show that in many relevant cases, including VQE, QAOA and certain quantum classifiers, estimating expectation values with $k$ measurement outcomes results in optimization algorithms whose convergence properties can be rigorously well understood, for any value of $k$. In fact, even using single measurement outcomes for the estimation of expectation values is sufficient. Moreover, in many settings the required gradients can be expressed as linear combinations of expectation values -- originating, e.g., from a sum over local terms of a Hamiltonian, a parameter shift rule, or a sum over data-set instances -- and we show that in these cases $k$-shot expectation value estimation can be combined with sampling over terms of the linear combination, to obtain "doubly stochastic" gradient descent optimizers. For all algorithms we prove convergence guarantees, providing a framework for the derivation of rigorous optimization results in the context of near-term quantum devices. Additionally, we explore numerically these methods on benchmark VQE, QAOA and quantum-enhanced machine learning tasks and show that treating the stochastic settings as hyper-parameters allows for state-of-the-art results with significantly fewer circuit executions and measurements., Comment: Significantly revised version - accepted in Quantum. Strong electronic correlations can produce remarkable phenomena such as metal-insulator transitions and greatly enhance superconductivity, thermoelectricity, or optical non-linearity. In correlated systems, spatially varying charge textures also amplify magnetoelectric effects or electroresistance in mesostructures. However, how spatially varying spin textures may influence electron transport in the presence of correlations remains unclear. Here we demonstrate a very large topological Hall effect (THE) in thin films of a lightly electron-doped charge-transfer insulator, (Ca, Ce)MnO3. Magnetic force microscopy reveals the presence of magnetic bubbles, whose density vs. magnetic field peaks near the THE maximum, as is expected to occur in skyrmion systems. The THE critically depends on carrier concentration and diverges at low doping, near the metal-insulator transition. The distribution of the cosmic convergence field is modeled using a large-deviation principle where all non-Gaussian contributions are computed from first principles. The geometry of the past light cone is accounted for by constructing the total weak-lensing signal from contributions of the matter density in thin disk slices. The prediction of this model is successfully tested against numerical simulation with ray tracing, and found to be accurate within at least 5 per cent in the tails at redshift 1 and opening angle of 10 arcmin and even more so with increasing source redshift and opening angle. An accurate analytical approximation to the theory is also provided for practical implementation. The lensing kernel that mixes physical scales along the line-of-sight tends to reduce the domain of validity of this theoretical approach compared to the three dimensional case of cosmic densities in spherical cells. This effect is shown to be avoidable if a nulling procedure is implemented in order to localise the lensing line-of-sight integrations in a tomographic analysis. Accuracy in the tails is thus achieved within a percent for source redshifts between 0.5 and 1.5 and an opening angle of 10 arcmin. Scaling describes how a given quantity $Y$ that characterizes a system varies with its size $P$. For most complex systems it is of the form $Y\sim P^\beta$ with a nontrivial value of the exponent $\beta$, usually determined by regression methods. The presence of noise can make it difficult to conclude about the existence of a non-linear behavior with $\beta\neq 1$ and we propose here to circumvent fitting problems by investigating how two different systems of sizes $P_1$ and $P_2$ are related to each other. This leads us to define a local scaling exponent $\beta_{\mathrm{loc}}$ that we study versus the ratio $P_2/P_1$ and provides some sort of `tomography scan' of scaling across different values of the size ratio, allowing us to assess the relevance of nonlinearity in the system and to identify an effective exponent that minimizes the error for predicting the value of $Y$. We illustrate this method on various real-world datasets for cities and show that our method reinforces in some cases the standard analysis, but is also able to provide new insights in inconclusive cases and to detect problems in the scaling form such as the absence of a single scaling exponent or the presence of threshold effects., Comment: Revised version with additional results and discussions. 16 pages, 2 tables, 19 figures

Ferroelectric field-effect doping has emerged as a powerful approach to manipulate the ground state of correlated oxides, opening the door to a new class of field-effect devices. However, this potential is not fully exploited so far, since the size of the field-effect doping is generally much smaller than expected. Here we study the limiting factors through magneto-transport, scanning transmission electron and piezo-response force microscopy in ferroelectric/superconductor (YBa2Cu3O7-{\delta} /BiFeO3) heterostructures, a model system showing very strong field-effects. Still, we find that they are limited in the first place by an incomplete ferroelectric switching. This can be explained by the existence of a preferential polarization direction set by the atomic terminations at the interface. More importantly, we also find that the field-effect carrier doping is accompanied by a strong modulation of the carrier mobility. Besides making quantification of field-effects via Hall measurements not straightforward, this finding suggests that ferroelectric poling produces structural changes (e.g. charged defects or structural distortions) in the correlated oxide channel. Those findings have important consequences for the understanding of ferroelectric field-effects and for the strategies to further enhance them.

One of the most exciting scientific challenges is to detect Earth-like planets in the habitable zones of other stars in the galaxy and search for evidence of life. The ability to observe and characterise dozens of potentially Earth-like planets now lies within the realm of possibility due to rapid advances in key space and imaging technologies. The associated challenge of directly imaging very faint planets in orbit around nearby very bright stars is now well understood, with the key instrumentation also being perfected and developed. Such advances will allow us to develop large transformative telescopes, covering a broad UV-optical-IR spectral range, which can carry out the detailed research programmes designed to answer the questions we wish to answer: Carry out high contrast imaging surveys of nearby stars to search for planets within their habitable zones. Characterise the planets detected to determine masses and radii from photometric measurements. Through spectroscopic studies of their atmospheres and surfaces, search for habitability indicators and for signs of an environment that has been modified by the presence of life. Active studies of potential missions have been underway for a number of years. The latest of these is the Large UV Optical IR space telescope (LUVOIR), one of four flagship mission studies commissioned by NASA in support of the 2020 US Decadal Survey. LUVOIR, if selected, will be of interest to a wide scientific community and will be the only telescope capable of searching for and characterizing a sufficient number of exoEarths to provide a meaningful answer to the question - Are we alone?.
