Over the last 20 years, begomoviruses have emerged as devastating pathogens, limiting the production of different crops worldwide. Weather conditions increase vector populations, with negative effects on crop production. In this work we evaluate the relationship between the incidence of begomovirus and weather before and during the crop cycle. Soybean and bean fields from north-western (NW) Argentina were monitored between 2001 and 2018 and classified as moderate (≤50%) or severe (>50%) according to the begomovirus incidence. Bean golden mosaic virus (BGMV) and soybean blistering mosaic virus (SbBMV) were the predominant begomovirus in bean and soybean crops, respectively. Nearly 200 bio-meteorological variables were constructed by summarizing climatic variables in 10-day periods from July to November of each crop year. The studied variables included temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, wind (speed and direction), pressure, cloudiness, and visibility. For bean, high maximum winter temperatures, low spring humidity, and precipitation 10 days before planting correlated with severe incidence. In soybeans, high temperatures in late winter and in the pre-sowing period, and low spring precipitations were found to be good predictors of high incidence of begomovirus. The results suggest that temperature and pre-sowing precipitations can be used to predict the incidence status [predictive accuracy: 80% (bean) and 75% (soybean)]. Thus, these variables can be incorporated in early warning systems for crop management decision-making to reduce the virus impact on bean and soybean crops.

Plant pathogens, such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses, can cause serious damage to crops and significantly reduce yield and quality. Bacterial diseases of agronomic crops, however, have been little studied. The present study aims to isolate and identify bacteria recovered from symptomatic maize (Zea mays) leaves collected from field samples in the province of Cordoba, Argentina. Bacterial strains were identified using whole-cell matrix-assisted laser-desorption-ionization-time-off light mass spectrometry and 16S rDNA sequencing. Members of the genera Exiguobacterium and Curtobacterium were dominant in the studied vegetal material. Two strains (RC18-1/2 and RC18-3/1) were selected for further studies. The pathogenicity test showed that plants inoculated with Curtobacterium sp. RC18-1/2 exhibited the same symptoms as those previously detected in the field. To our knowledge, this study provides the first evidence about the isolation of a Curtobacterium pathogenic strain in maize. Effective crop disease management will require the use of integrated strategies, such as resistant cultivars and/or biocontrol agents., (© 2022. Introduction: To confront the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a large share of the population must be immunized. Intramuscular vaccination of the shoulder is the preferred technique as it is easily exposed and guarantees a good immune reaction. Local side effects, such as pain and swelling, are common after deltoid inoculation. They usually resolve within 3 days. Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) should be considered if the symptoms persist. The aim of this presentation is to describe a typical case of SIRVA after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and provide information to the general orthopedic surgeon to properly diagnose, report, and treat these cases., Case Report: A 69-year-old female health-care professional without history of shoulder pain consulted the senior author for persistent severe left shoulder pain 3 months following the second dose of Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccination. She claimed an improper application technique that caused immediate pain and loss of active range of motion (ROM). She underwent medical treatment with several doctors during 3 months with poor results. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the left shoulder done 5 days after vaccination showed mild subacromial-subdeltoid bursitis. A follow-up MRI at 2 months after application revealed synovial hypertrophy and distention of the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa. We prescribed a dose of depot betamethasone and home-based program of gentle exercises. Although initial response was quick, the patient required shoulder arthroscopy the following months, due to persistence in pain and functional limitations., Conclusion: SIRVA cases may occur and should be suspected in all individuals without a history of shoulder symptoms or dysfunction who experience sudden pain and reduced ROM following deltoid muscle vaccination. Treatment must be initiated early with corticosteroids and rehabilitation. Goals: The present survey from the Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED-Società Italiana di Endoscopia Digestiva) was aimed at reporting infection control practice and outcomes at Digestive Endoscopy Units in a high-incidence area., Background: Lombardy was the Italian region with the highest coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) prevalence, at the end of March 2020 accounting for 20% of all worldwide deaths. Joint Gastro-Intestinal societies released recommendations for Endoscopy Units to reduce the risk of the contagion. However, there are few data from high-prevalence areas on adherence to these recommendations and on their efficacy., Methods: A survey was designed by the Lombardy section of SIED to analyze (a) changes in activity and organization, (b) adherence to recommendations, (c) rate of health care professionals' (HCP) infection during the COVID-19 outbreak., Results: In total, 35/61 invited centers (57.4%) participated; most modified activities were according to recommendations and had filtering face piece 2/filtering face piece 3 and water-repellent gowns available, but few had negative-pressure rooms or provided telephonic follow-up; 15% of HCPs called in sick and 6% had confirmed COVID-19. There was a trend (P=0.07) toward different confirmed COVID-19 rates among endoscopists (7.9%), nurses (6.6%), intermediate-care technicians (3.4%), and administrative personnel (2.2%). There was no correlation between the rate of sick HCPs and COVID-19 incidence in the provinces and personal protective equipment availability and use, whereas an inverse correlation with hospital volume was found., Conclusions: Adherence to recommendations was rather good, though a minority were able to follow all recommendations. The accurate quantification of tumor-infiltrating immune cells turns crucial to uncover their role in tumor immune escape, to determine patient prognosis and to predict response to immune checkpoint blockade. Current state-of-the-art methods that quantify immune cells from tumor biopsies using gene expression data apply computational deconvolution methods that present multicollinearity and estimation errors resulting in the overestimation or underestimation of the diversity of infiltrating immune cells and their quantity. To overcome such limitations, we developed MIXTURE, a new ν-support vector regression-based noise constrained recursive feature selection algorithm based on validated immune cell molecular signatures. MIXTURE provides increased robustness to cell type identification and proportion estimation, outperforms the current methods, and is available to the wider scientific community. We applied MIXTURE to transcriptomic data from tumor biopsies and found relevant novel associations between the components of the immune infiltrate and molecular subtypes, tumor driver biomarkers, tumor mutational burden, microsatellite instability, intratumor heterogeneity, cytolytic score, programmed cell death ligand 1 expression, patients' survival and response to anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 and anti-programmed cell death protein 1 immunotherapy., (© The Author(s) 2020. Rural land valuation plays an important role in the development of land use policies for agricultural purposes. The advance of computational software and machine learning methods has enhanced mass appraisal methodologies for modeling and predicting economic values. New machine learning methods, like tree-based regression models, have been proposed as an alternative to linear regression to predict economic values from ancillary variables, since these algorithms are able to handle non-normality and non-linearity in the data. However, regression trees are commonly estimated assuming independent rather than spatially correlated data. This study aims to build a tree-based regression model that will help to tackle methodological problems related to the determination of prices of rural lands. The Quantile Regression Forest (QRF) algorithm was used to provide a regression model to predict and assess the uncertainty associated with model-derived predictions. However, the classical QRF ignores the autocorrelation underlying spatialized land values. The objective of this work was to develop, implement, and evaluate a spatial version of QRF, named sQRF, for computer-assisted mass appraisal of rural land values accounting for information from neighboring sites. We compared predictions of land values from sQRF with those obtained from spatial random forest, kriging regression, and linear regression models. sQRF performed well in predicting rural land values; indeed, it performed better than multiple linear regression. An important feature of sQRF is its ability to produce a direct uncertainty measure to assess the goodness of the predictions. Land values reflect a complex mix of agricultural returns, localization, and access to markets, which can be predicted from ancillary environmental variables. Regional mapping herbicide sorption to soil is essential for risk assessment. However, conducting analytical quantification of adsorption coefficient (K d ) in large-scale studies is too costly; therefore, a research question arises on goodness of K d spatial prediction from sampling. The application of a spatial Bayesian regression (BR) is a newer technique in agricultural and natural resources sciences that allows converting spatially discrete samples into maps covering continuous spatial domains. The objective of this work was to unveil herbicide sorption to soil at a landscape scale by developing a predictive BR model. We integrated a large set of ancillary soil and climate covariables from sites with K d measurements into a spatial mixed model including site random effects. The models were fitted using glyphosate and atrazine K d s, determined in 80 and 120 sites, respectively, from central Argentina. For model assessment, measurements of global and point-wise prediction errors were obtained by cross-validation; residual variability was estimated by bootstrap to compare BR with regression kriging. Results showed that the BR spatial predictions outperformed regression kriging. The glyphosate K d model (root mean square prediction error, 13% of the mean) included aluminum oxides, pH, and clay content, whereas the atrazine K d model strongly depended on soil organic carbon and clay and on climatic variables related to water availability (root mean square prediction error, 27%). Background and study aims  COVID-19 has dramatically impacted endoscopy practice because upper endoscopy procedures can be aerosol-generating. Most elective procedures have been rescheduled. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is frequently performed in emergency or urgent settings in which rescheduling is not possible. We evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ERCP in Italy during the SARS-CoV-2 lockdown, in areas with high incidence of COVID-19. Patients and methods  We performed a retrospective survey of centers performing ERCP in high COVID-19 prevalence areas in Italy to collect information regarding clinical data from patients undergoing ERCP, staff, case-volume and organization of endoscopy units from March 8, 2020 to April 30, 2020. Results  We collected data from 31 centers and 804 patients. All centers adopted a triage and/or screening protocol for SARS-CoV-2 and performed follow-up of patients 2 weeks after the procedure. ERCP case-volume was reduced by 44.1 % compared to the respective 2019 timeframe. Of the 804 patients undergoing ERCP, 22 (2.7 %) were positive for COVID-19. Adverse events occurred at a similar rate to previously published data. Of the patients, endoscopists, and nurses, 1.6 %, 11.7 %, and 4.9 %, respectively, tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 at follow up. Only 38.7 % of centers had access to a negative-pressure room for ERCP. Conclusion  The case-volume reduction for ERCP during lockdown was lower than for other gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures. No definitive conclusions can be drawn about the percentage of SARS-CoV-2-positive patients and healthcare workers observed after ERCP. A high affinity Streptavidin ligand was mined from a DNA-encoded library of non-peptidic oligimers and characterized structurally.

Historically, cow selection criteria were developed for conventional milking systems that have regular milking intervals (MI). However, in automatic milking systems (AMS), there is variability in MI within and between cows. These sources of variability provide an opportunity to identify cows with high daily milk yield (DY) and long MI. An extended MI (longer than 16 h in pasture-based systems) has a negative effect on DY. Cows that tolerate extended MI and maintain high DY can be considered more efficient than cows with low DY and long MI, or with high DY but short MI, thereby improving robotic system use. Knowledge of the behavior and parameters of lactation curves of cows in AMS could help farmers to identify cows with a specific lactational phenotype. The objective of this study was to identify individual cows with high DY and long MI within herds, which could reflect increased tolerance to milk accumulation under AMS. A database containing records for 773,483 milking events for one year (July 2016-June 2017) from 4 pasture-based AMS farms was used. Lactation curves within each herd were fitted using several mixed models including fixed effects for the parameters of the lactation curve and random cow effects. Predicted curves of average DY according to parity (multiparous and primiparous) were obtained. The best linear unbiased prediction of the random cow effect allowed us to categorize lactations as having either high or low milk production. The median MI of each lactation was then used to categorize cows as having either short or long MI. Daily yield at the peak of lactation, days to peak and 305-d cumulative milk production were used to compare the effect of DY and MI categories, as well as the DY × MI interaction. Milk production by multiparous and primiparous cows with high DY and long MI was between 35 and 45% higher than that of the low DY and short MI. From all lactations analyzed, the incidence of animals with high DY and long MI across farms was 7.5%. We have identified and quantified a new, AMS-specific, phenotype (the combination of a relatively higher DY with relatively longer MI) with potential to increase use of AMS units. Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, for which the survival rate is increasing over time. Growing evidence are showing that the effect of lifestyle could have the same weight of the effect of the usual clinical-pathological risk factors on survival rate. The DianaWeb study responds to the pressing request of patients diagnosed with breast cancer to know the most advanced point of scientific research on the prevention of recurrences, to have a virtual space to meet, where to receive advice and practical information for the daily management the lifestyle change. DianaWeb is a community-based participatory research, dedicated to breast cancer patients, aimed to monitor lifestyle, provide them tips to encourage sustainable lifestyle changes, and to analyze clinical outcomes. In order to achieve these aims, DianaWeb uses a specific interactive website (http://www.dianaweb.org/)., Methods: The web architecture has been designed essential and light, with a rigorous implantation that brings the figure of the woman to the center. In order to humanized the project the acronym used to identify the study was Diana (Diet and Androgens), a classical female name, who was illustrated as a female avatar, aimed to symbolize all women. The graphical interface was developed using seven pastel tones colors, which become a fundamental elements of the layout, such as frame, navigation menu, and separation interspaces., Results: The project started in 2015, and in 4 days the web site was visited by more than 1000 people. A total of 2823 persons enrolled in the study, but 2182 did not send the full documentations, 61 persons abandoned the study, 641 timely answered to the questionnaires., Conclusions: The high number of participants' interaction within the web page, confirmed the high usability of the web page and the great interest of patients. Prevention of breast cancer recurrences with low cost technologies, easily available to everybody, is a priority for both public health and public finances.

DNA-encoded library (DEL) screening has emerged as an important method for early stage drug and probe molecule discovery. The vast majority of screens using DELs have been relatively simple binding assays. The library is incubated with a target molecule, which is almost always a protein, and the DNAs that remain associated with the target after thorough washing are amplified and deep sequenced to reveal the chemical structures of the ligands they encode. Recently however, a number of different screening formats have been introduced that demand more than simple binding. These include a format that demands hits exhibit high selectivity for target vs. off-targets, a protocol to screen for enzyme inhibitors and another to identify organocatalysts in a DEL. These and other novel assay formats are reviewed in this article. We also consider some of the most significant remaining challenges in DEL assay development.

This article presents original geospatial data on soil adsorption coefficient (Kd) for two widely used herbicides in agriculture, glyphosate and atrazine. Besides Kds, the dataset includes site-specific soil data: pH, total nitrogen, total organic carbon, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Mn, Cu, cation exchange capacity, percentage of sand, silt and clay, water holding capacity, aluminum and iron oxides, as well as climatic and topographic variables. The quantification of herbicides soil retention was made on a sample of soils selected by Conditionated Latin Hypercube method to capture the underlying edaphoclimatic variability in Cordoba, Argentina. The glyphosate data presented here has been used to evaluate statistical methods for model-based digital mapping (F. Giannini Kurina, S. Hang, R. Macchiavelli, M. Balzarini, 2019) [1]. Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) catabolism caused by mutations in the gene coding for succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH5A1). The abnormal levels of GHB detected in the brain and in all physiological fluids of SSADHD patients represent a diagnostic biochemical hallmark of the disease. Here we report on the clinical and molecular characterization of two unrelated Italian patients and the identification of two novel mutations: a 22 bp DNA duplication in exon 1, c.114_135dup, p.(C46AfsX97), and a non-sense mutation in exon 10, c.1429C > T, p.(Q477X). The two patients showed very different clinical phenotypes, coherent with their age. These findings enrich the characterization of SSADHD families and contribute to the knowledge on the progression of the disease.

Smut disease caused by the fungal pathogen Thecaphora frezii Carranza & Lindquist is threatening the peanut production in Argentina. Fungicides commonly used in the peanut crop have shown little or no effect controlling the disease, making it a priority to obtain peanut varieties resistant to smut. In this study, recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were developed from three crosses between three susceptible peanut elite cultivars (Arachis hypogaea L. subsp. hypogaea) and two resistant landraces (Arachis hypogaea L. subsp. fastigiata Waldron). Parents and RILs were evaluated under high inoculum pressure (12000 teliospores g-1 of soil) over three years. Disease resistance parameters showed a broad range of variation with incidence mean values ranging from 1.0 to 35.0% and disease severity index ranging from 0.01 to 0.30. Average heritability (h2) estimates of 0.61 to 0.73 indicated that resistance in the RILs was heritable, with several lines (4 to 7 from each cross) showing a high degree of resistance and stability over three years. Evidence of genetic transfer between genetically distinguishable germplasm (introgression in a broad sense) was further supported by simple-sequence repeats (SSRs) and Insertion/Deletion (InDel) marker genotyping. This is the first report of smut genetic resistance identified in peanut landraces and its introgression into elite peanut cultivars., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The effect of the drying conditions on the retention quality for dried chicory roots ( Cichorium intibyus L. ) was investigated. Cubes of chicory roots were dried using hot air and vacuum dryers at 60 and 80 °C. Two different air velocities (0.2 and 0.7 m/s) were used in the hot air dryer, and two vacuum pressures (25 and 50 mmHg absolute) were set in the vacuum chamber. An exhaustive three dimensional mathematical model to describe mass transfer during drying of chicory roots of 1 cm of side was presented considering a polynomial functionality for the contraction kinetics. Experimental data obtained at laboratory scale were used to validate the proposed model showing good agreement between the experimental and estimated moisture profiles for both drying procedures. Moisture diffusivity was found to increase with the air drying temperature, velocity and vacuum pressure depending on the drying method. However, higher moisture diffusivity coefficients and lower activation energy values were obtained for the vacuum drying method. Samples dried using the vacuum drier at 60 °C and 25 mmHg presented better retention quality attributes, i.e., better rehydration, lower shrinkage and higher total phenolic content. The proposed mathematical model was able to satisfactorily predict the described behavior.

The aim of this work was to fit and compare three non-linear models (Wood, Milkbot and diphasic) to model lactation curves from two approaches: with and without cow random effect. Knowing the behaviour of lactation curves is critical for decision-making in a dairy farm. Knowledge of the model of milk production progress along each lactation is necessary not only at the mean population level (dairy farm), but also at individual level (cow-lactation). The fits were made in a group of high production and reproduction dairy farms; in first and third lactations in cool seasons. A total of 2167 complete lactations were involved, of which 984 were first-lactations and the remaining ones, third lactations (19 382 milk yield tests). PROC NLMIXED in SAS was used to make the fits and estimate the model parameters. The diphasic model resulted to be computationally complex and barely practical. Regarding the classical Wood and MilkBot models, although the information criteria suggest the selection of MilkBot, the differences in the estimation of production indicators did not show a significant improvement. The Wood model was found to be a good option for fitting the expected value of lactation curves. Furthermore, the three models fitted better when the subject (cow) random effect was considered, which is related to magnitude of production. The random effect improved the predictive potential of the models, but it did not have a significant effect on the production indicators derived from the lactation curves, such as milk yield and days in milk to peak.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the reproductive and productive performance of dairy cows with and without puerperal metritis and to evaluate the effectiveness of using a long-acting ceftiofur preparation. Dairy cows in one dairy farm, calving from July 2009 to January 2010, were examined between 3 and 14 days postpartum and classified on the basis of vaginal discharge into three groups: cows with normal discharge (control; C); cows with a bloody mucus purulent or pathologic nonfetid discharge (PnFD), and cows with bloody mucopurulent or purulent fetid discharge (PFD). Cows in C and PnFD groups were not treated, whereas those in the PFD group were randomly allocated to receive 2.2 mg/kg of ceftiofur subcutaneously behind the ear (PFD-T) or remain untreated (PFD-No T). From the 640 cows examined, 58.2% formed the C group, 13.4% formed the PnFD group, and 28.4% formed the PFD group. Survival curves differed between cows in the C group and PFD-No T group (P = 0.0013) and between PFD-No T versus PFD-T group (P = 0.0006). Survival curves of PnFD were intermediate and did not differ from those in the C group (P = 0.2) and PFD-T group (P = 0.1) but tended to be different from the PFD-No T group (P = 0.056). The postpartum interval to achieve a 25% pregnancy rate was 72 days for cows in the C group, 73 days for the PFD-T group, 83 days for PnFD group, and 95 days for the PFD-No T group. The chance of pregnancy in a cow in the C group was 1.98 times higher (95% confidence interval = 1.33, 3.08) and in cows in the PFD-T group was 2.16 times higher (95% confidence interval = 1.37, 3.50) than that in the PFD-No T group. Finally, the chance of pregnancy in cows in the PnFD group tended to be higher (P = 0.08) than that in the PFD-No T group but did not differ from the other two groups. Cumulative 305-day milk production was higher (P < 0.0001) in C group than those with vaginal discharge, regardless of fetidness and regardless of treatment. It is concluded that puerperal metritis affects the reproductive and productive performance of dairy cows and the treatment with ceftiofur was effective in reducing the adverse effects on reproductive performance but not on milk production., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Background: Late migration of a plastic biliary stent after endoscopic placement is a well known complication, but there is little information regarding migration of a plastic stent during multiple stents placement., Case Report: A white man was hospitalized for severe jaundice due to neoplastic hilar stenosis. Surgical eligibility appeared unclear on admission and endoscopy was carried out, but the first stent migrated proximally at the time of second stent insertion. After failed attempts with various devices, the migrated stent was removed successfully through cannulation with a dilation balloon., Conclusions: The migration of a plastic biliary stent during multiple stents placement is a possible complication. In this context, extraction can be very complicated. In our patient, cannulation of a stent with a dilation balloon was the only effective method.

Colonic gallstone ileus in an uncommon mechanical bowel obstruction caused by intraluminal impaction of one or more gallstones. The surgical management of gallstone ileus is complex and is potentially of high risk. There have been reports of gallstone extractions using various endoscopic modalities to relieve the obstruction. In this report we present the technique employed to successfully perform a mechanical lithotripsy and extraction of a large gallstone embedded in a sigmoid colon affected by diverticular stenosis. We passed through the stenosis with a 11.3 mm videoscope with 3.7 mm channel. A large lithotripsy extraction basket was used to catch and break up the stone and fragments were removed using the same basket. The patient was discharged asymptomatic three days after the procedure. Using appropriate devices mechanical lithotripsy is a safe and effective method to treat colonic obstruction and avoid surgery in the setting of gallstone ileus even in case of big stones.

Several recreational surface waters in Salta, Argentina, were selected to assess their quality. Seventy percent of the measurements exceeded at least one of the limits established by international legislation becoming unsuitable for their use. To interpret results of complex data, multivariate techniques were applied. Arenales River, due to the variability observed in the data, was divided in two: upstream and downstream representing low and high pollution sites, respectively, and cluster analysis supported that differentiation. Arenales River downstream and Campo Alegre Reservoir were the most different environments, and Vaqueros and La Caldera rivers were the most similar. Canonical correlation analysis allowed exploration of correlations between physicochemical and microbiological variables except in both parts of Arenales River, and principal component analysis allowed finding relationships among the nine measured variables in all aquatic environments. Variable's loadings showed that Arenales River downstream was impacted by industrial and domestic activities, Arenales River upstream was affected by agricultural activities, Campo Alegre Reservoir was disturbed by anthropogenic and ecological effects, and La Caldera and Vaqueros rivers were influenced by recreational activities. Discriminant analysis allowed identification of subgroup of variables responsible for seasonal and spatial variations. Enterococcus, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, E. coli, pH, and fecal coliforms are sufficient to spatially describe the quality of the aquatic environments. Regarding seasonal variations, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, fecal coliforms, and pH can be used to describe water quality during dry season, while dissolved oxygen, conductivity, total coliforms, E. coli, and Enterococcus during wet season. Thus, the use of multivariate techniques allowed optimizing monitoring tasks and minimizing costs involved.

Background: The inhibition of physiological gastric acid secretion induced by proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), the most widely used drugs in the world, may cause a significant bacterial overgrowth in the gastrointestinal tract as a side effect. This study was undertaken firstly to correlate PPI intake with concentration of specific bacterial groups in the stomach as well as possible Helicobacter pylori infection, and secondly to assess the efficacy of the 4 lactobacilli L. rhamnosus LR06 (DSM 21981), L. pentosus LPS01 (DSM 21980), L. plantarum LP01 (LMG P-21021), and L. delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii LDD01 (DSM 22106) in the restoration of a physiological gastric barrier., Methods: Total bacteria, sulphite-reducing bacteria (SRB), total coliforms, and total lactobacilli were quantified in samples of gastric juice from 29 subjects taking PPIs for at least 3 months compared with 36 control subjects. The presence of H. pylori was also assessed.The subjects treated with PPIs with a concentration of total bacteria in the gastric juice higher than 10(5) cells/mL were selected for an intervention study with the 4 lactobacilli L. rhamnosus LR06, L. pentosus LPS01, L. plantarum LP01, and L. delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii LDD01. After 15 days of supplementation, the same bacterial groups were quantified to compare these values with the baseline., Results: No significant correlation was found between the presence of H. pylori and PPI intake. The baseline quantification of bacterial groups (log10 CFU/mL of gastric juice, PPI group vs. control) showed: total bacteria 8.35 versus 3.95 (P<0.001); total coliforms 4.98 versus 2.35 (P<0.001); SRB 5.71 versus 2.28 (P=0.065); and total lactobacilli 3.85 versus 2.20 (P=0.005). After 15 days of treatment with the 4 lactobacilli, the quantification of bacterial groups gave the following results: total bacteria 7.91 versus 8.35 at time zero (P=0.002); total coliforms 4.21 versus 4.98 at time zero (P<0.001); SRB 4.94 versus 5.71 at baseline (P=0.060); and total lactobacilli 7.20 versus 3.85 at baseline (P=0.040)., Conclusions: A significant impairment of intragastric acidity is sufficient to induce a relevant bacterial overgrowth, with particular reference to SRB and total coliforms. This fact can contribute to an increase in the risk of infections and intestinal diseases. It could be crucial to restore the physiological "gastric barrier." The 2-week supplementation with the 4 lactobacilli tested proved to be effective in significantly reducing total bacteria and coliforms in the gastric milieu in subjects chronically treated with PPIs. It is therefore possible to hopothesise a beneficial role for such lactobacilli in clinical practice.

Background: Leaky gut, or intestinal permeability, is the phenomenon of the gut wall exhibiting increased absorbency. It is pretty well recognised that an altered or damaged bowel lining or gut wall may result from unbalanced diet, parasites, infection, or medications and that this allows substances such as toxins, microbes, undigested food, or waste to leak through. As a natural consequence, this prompts the body to initiate an immune reaction leading to potentially severe health conditions. Different strategies may be used to improve, at least temporarily, the physiological intestinal barrier. The use of specific beneficial microorganisms, such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, has been suggested as an innovative tool to counteract an improper level of intestinal permeability. The association of bacteria with specific gelling agents, such as gums, may represent an improvement since these molecules are able to form hydrophilic gels that distribute uniformly over the inner intestinal surface. This pilot study was undertaken to evaluate intestinal permeability in subjects treated with a gelling complex, an association of tara gum and the microorganism Streptococcus thermophilus ST10 (DSM 25246), which has a well-demonstrated in vitro ability to synthesise and secrete exopolysaccharides (EPSs)., Methods: Twenty-five healthy subjects were enrolled in this human intervention, double-blind, placebo-controlled, pilot trial (age between 21 and 57 y, mean 37.7±11.2). Subjects were then randomised into 2 groups: group A (13 subjects) was given an active formulation containing 250 mg of tara gum and 1 billion viable cells of S. thermophilus ST10, whereas group B (12 subjects) was given a placebo formulation. All the subjects participating in the study were directed to take 1 dose per day for 30 consecutive days. The presence and concentration of exopolysaccharides (EPSs) in the faeces was determined at time 0 (d0), after 30 days of treatment (d30), and at the end of the 2-week follow-up period (d45). The monosaccharide composition of EPSs was used to quantify the possible contribution of tara gum to the amount of polysaccharides detected in the faecal material. Intestinal permeability was evaluated at the same time by means of the lactitol/mannitol ratio (small intestine permeability) and sucralose concentration (colonic permeability) in urine specimens sampled after specified times. A statistical comparison was made between the concentration of EPSs, the lactulose/mannitol ratio, and the amount of excreted sucralose in the 2 groups at d0, d30, and d45., Results: In the active group, supplementation with S. thermophilus ST10 and tara gum was able to significantly increase the faecal EPSs concentration compared with placebo (from 0.169 mg/g to 0.633 mg/g after 30 d, P<0.001). An interesting decrease in intestinal permeability, both of the small bowel and in the colon, was also recorded. The L/M ratio diminished from 0.021 in the active group to 0.014 and 0.015 after 30 and 45 days, respectively (P=0.045 and P=0.033 compared with placebo). The sucralose concentration decreased from 35.8 mg to 27.9 mg and 29.1 mg (P=0.038 and P=0.026 compared with placebo) at the end of the supplementation period and after the follow-up, respectively. No significant differences were recorded in the placebo after 30 days or at the end of the follow-up., Conclusions: The association of the EPSs produced by S. thermophilus ST10 and tara gum seems capable of significantly improving the intestinal functional barrier in healthy subjects. A wider study in subjects presenting impaired gut permeability would be useful in the future to confirm the positive results from this pilot trial. In any case, our findings are consistent with the parallel increase in exopolysaccharide concentration in the faecal material, thus suggesting the effective ability of the strain used to secrete EPSs in the gut lumen. An innovative approach of this type may be useful in helping to restore the physiological barrier by means of a merely natural and mechanical action.

Identifying population genetic structure (PGS) is crucial for breeding and conservation. Several clustering algorithms are available to identify the underlying PGS to be used with genetic data of maize genotypes. In this work, six methods to identify PGS from unlinked molecular marker data were compared using simulated and experimental data consisting of multilocus-biallelic genotypes. Datasets were delineated under different biological scenarios characterized by three levels of genetic divergence among populations (low, medium, and high FST) and two numbers of sub-populations (K=3 and K=5). The relative performance of hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering, as well as model-based clustering (STRUCTURE) and clustering from neural networks (SOM-RP-Q). We use the clustering error rate of genotypes into discrete sub-populations as comparison criterion. In scenarios with great level of divergence among genotype groups all methods performed well. With moderate level of genetic divergence (FST=0.2), the algorithms SOM-RP-Q and STRUCTURE performed better than hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering. In all simulated scenarios with low genetic divergence and in the experimental SNP maize panel (largely unlinked), SOM-RP-Q achieved the lowest clustering error rate. The SOM algorithm used here is more effective than other evaluated methods for sparse unlinked genetic data.

The objective of this study was to estimate the relative contribution of factors affecting how quickly cattle become pregnant in Argentine dairy herds. Data from 76,401 cows from 249 dairy herds were analyzed. A hazard model was used to explore days open (DO). The factors considered were milk yield, lactation number, calving season, and breeding technique (i.e., type of service: artificial insemination [AI], or combined service). Cows with lower milk yield had 1.09 to 1.38 higher likelihood to become pregnant than those with higher milk yield (P < 0.0001). The number of DO increased linearly with an increasing number of lactations (P < 0.0001). Cows calving in fall-winter had a shorter interval to conception than those calving in summer. The hazard rate for combined service was 1.27; therefore, cows with combined service were more likely to become pregnant during the observation period than those bred by AI. The difference in DO between cows of high versus low milk yield was smaller when dairies used AI as the main breeding technique than when they used combined service. Furthermore, dairies using mainly combined service had lower milk yield (5693.7 L) than those using mainly AI (7684.4 L). Although lactation number and calving season contributed to explain the number of DO, the influence of production level, the type of service, and the interaction between them was also associated with reproductive efficiency in Argentine dairy herds., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a very widespread condition. In Europe, it is estimated that about 175 million people suffer from this disease and have to chronically take drugs to increase gastric pH. The proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole, lansoprazole, and esomeprazole are the most widely used drug typology in this regard. However, the inhibition of normal gastric acid secretion has important side effects, the most important being bacterial overgrowth in the stomach and duodenum with a concentration of >10⁵ viable cells/mL. As a major consequence of this, many harmful or even pathogenic bacteria contained in some foods could survive the gastric transit and colonize either the stomach itself, the duodenum, or the gut, where they could establish acute and even chronic infections with unavoidable consequences for the host's health. In other words, the "gastric barrier effect" is strongly reduced or even disrupted. To date, there are no real strategies to deal with this widespread, although still relatively little known, problem. The aim of this study was to confirm the gastric bacterial overgrowth in long-term PPI consumers and to assess the efficacy of some probiotic bacteria, belonging to both genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, in the reduction of gastric and duodenal bacterial overgrowth, therefore partially restoring the gastric barrier effect against foodborne pathogenic bacteria., Methods: For this purpose, probiotics with a strong demonstrated inhibitory activity on gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, were tested in a human intervention trial involving a total of 30 subjects treated with PPIs for either 3 to 12 consecutive months (short-term) or >12 consecutive months (long-term). An additional 10 subjects not taking PPIs were enrolled and used as a control group representing the general population. Four selected probiotics Probiotical SpA (Novara, Italy), namely Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR06 (DSM 21981), Lactobacillus pentosus LPS01 (DSM 21980), Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (LMG P-21021), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii LDD01 (DSM 22106) were administered for 10 days to 10 subjects treated with PPIs for >12 months (group B). In the 60 mg formulation, N-acetylcysteine was included as well in light of its well-known mechanical effects on bacterial biofilms. Gastroscopies were performed at the beginning of the study (d0) in all the groups (A, B, C, and D) and after 10 days (d10) in group B only; that is, at the end of probiotics intake. The total viable cells and total Lactobacillus were quantified in gastric juice and duodenal brushing material from all subjects. The results were compared among all the groups and with the control subjects (group D) to confirm the bacterial overgrowth. A comparison was made also between d0 and d10 in group B to quantify the efficacy of the 4 probiotics administered for 10 days. Fecal samples were collected from all groups at d0, including subjects not treated with PPIs, and in group B only at d10. Specific bacterial classes, namely enterococci, total coliforms, E. coli, molds, and yeasts were quantified in all fecal specimens., Results: The results collected confirmed the strong bacterial overgrowth in the stomach and duodenum of people treated with PPIs compared with subjects with a normal intragastric acidity. It is also worth noting that the bacterial cell counts in subjects who underwent a long-term treatment with a PPI were greater than the results from subjects taking these drugs for 3 to 12 months. The intake of 4 specific probiotic strains with a marked antagonistic activity towards 5 E. coli bacteria, including the enterohaemorrhagic O157:H7 strain, and an effective amount of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was able to significantly reduce bacterial overgrowth in long-term PPI-treated subjects. Total lactobacilli represented the major percentage of bacterial counts, thus demonstrating the ability of such bacteria to colonize the stomach and the duodenum, at least temporarily, and to consequently restore the gastric barrier effect. A significant decrease in fecal enterococci, total coliforms, E. coli, molds, and yeasts in subjects treated with PPIs was recorded at the end of probiotics supplementation (d10) compared with baseline (d0) in group B. This is a further confirmation of the barrier effect also exerted at the stomach level., Conclusions: PPIs are the most widely sold and used drugs in the world. However, the chronic use of these pharmacological molecules exposes the subject to the risk of foodborne infections as most pathogens are able to survive the gastric transit in a condition of significantly decreased acidity.

Background: Beneficial findings concerning probiotics are increasing day by day. However, one of the most important parameters able to significantly affect the probiotic value of a microorganism is its survival during the transit through the stomach and the duodenum. Some techniques may be applied that aim to improve this parameter, but microencapsulation of bacterial cells remains one of the most important. A recent study assessed the kinetics of intestinal colonization by a mixture of 2 probiotic strains, given either in a microencapsulated or in a traditional, uncoated form., Methods: A comparison between the intestinal colonization by associating 5 microencapsulated bacteria and the same uncoated strains was performed by a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study. The study (December 2007 to January 2009) involved 53 healthy volunteers. In particular, subjects were divided into 2 groups: group A (27 subjects) was given a mix of probiotic strains Probiotical S.p.A. (Novara, Italy), Lactobacillus acidophilus LA02 (DSM 21717), Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR04 (DSM 16605), L. rhamnosus GG, or LGG (ATCC 53103), L. rhamnosus LR06 (DSM 21981), and Bifidobacterium lactis BS01 (LMG P-21384) in an uncoated form, whereas group B (26 subjects) received the same strains microencapsulated with a gastroprotected material. The uncoated strains were administered at 5×10⁹ cfu/strain/d (a total of 25×10⁹ cfu/d) for 21 days, whereas the microencapsulated bacteria were given at 1×10⁹ cfu/strain/d (a total of 5×10⁹ cfu/d) for 21 days. At the end of the first period of supplementation with probiotics, a 3-week wash-out phase was included in the study setting. At the end of the wash-out period, the groups crossed over their treatment regimen; that is, group A was administered the microencapsulated bacteria and group B the uncoated bacteria. The administered quantities of each strain were the same as the first treatment. A quantitative evaluation of intestinal colonization by probiotics, either microencapsulated or uncoated, was undertaken by examining fecal samples at the beginning of the study (time 0), after 10 days and after 21 days of each treatment period. In particular, fecal total Lactobacilli, heterofermentative Lactobacilli, and total Bifidobacteria were quantified at each checkpoint. A genomic analysis of an appropriate number of colonies was performed to quantify individual L. rhamnosus strains among heterofermentative Lactobacilli., Results: A statistically significant increase in the fecal amounts of total Lactobacilli, heterofermentative Lactobacilli, and total Bifidobacteria was registered in both groups at the end of each supplementation period compared with d₀ or d₄₂ (group A: P=0.0002, P=0.0001, and P<0.0001 at d₂₁, P=0.0060, P=0.0069, and P<0.0001 at d₆₃ for total Lactobacilli, heterofermentative Lactobacilli, and Bifidobacteria, respectively; group B: P=0.0002, P=0.0006, and P<0.0001 at d₂₁, P=0.0015, P=0.0016, and P<0.0001 at d₆₃ for total Lactobacilli, heterofermentative Lactobacilli, and Bifidobacteria, respectively), confirming the ability of each strain in the administered composition to colonize the human gut, whether supplemented in a gastroprotected or in a traditional freeze-dried form. On the contrary, subjects receiving microencapsulated bacteria reported a kinetics of intestinal colonization that was entirely comparable with those who were given uncoated strains at a 5 times higher amount., Conclusions: The microencapsulation technique used in this study is a valid approach aimed to significantly improve the survival of strains during gastroduodenal transit, thus enhancing their probiotic value and allowing the use of a 5 times lower amount.

In a recent publication we assessed the kinetics of intestinal colonization by microencapsulated probiotic bacteria in comparison with the same strains given in an uncoated form. It's well known, in fact, that microencapsulation of probiotics with specific materials is able to confer a significant resistance to gastric juice, thus protecting the cells during the gastric and duodenal transit and enhancing the probiotic efficacy of any supplementation. In any case, this was the first study reporting the fecal amounts of probiotics administered in a coated, protected form compared with traditional, uncoated ones. Here we discuss additional in vitro data of resistance of the same bacteria to gastric juice, human bile and pancreatic secretion and correlate them with the results of in vivo gut colonization.

Background: The low (LF) vs. high (HF) frequency energy ratio, computed from the spectral decomposition of heart beat intervals, has become a major tool in cardiac autonomic system control and sympatho-vagal balance studies. The (statistical) distributions of response variables designed from ratios of two quantities, such as the LF/HF ratio, are likely to non-normal, hence preventing e.g., from a relevant use of the t-test. Even using a non-parametric formulation, the solution may be not appropriate as the test statistics do not account for correlation and heteroskedasticity, such as those that can be observed when several measures are taken from the same patient., Objectives: The analyses for such type of data require the application of statistical models which do not assume a priori independence. In this spirit, the present contribution proposes the use of the Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) framework to assess differences between groups of measures performed over classes of patients., Methods: Statistical linear mixed models allow the inclusion of at least one random effect, besides the error term, which induces correlation between observations from the same subject. Moreover, by using GLMM, practitioners could assume any probability distribution, within the exponential family, for the data, and naturally model heteroskedasticity. Here, the sympatho-vagal balance expressed as LF/HF ratio of patients suffering neurogenic erectile dysfunction under three different body positions was analyzed in a case-control protocol by means of a GLMM under gamma and Gaussian distributed responses assumptions., Results: The gamma GLMM model was compared with the normal linear mixed model (LMM) approach conducted using raw and log transformed data. Both raw GLMM gamma and log transformed LMM allow better inference for factor effects, including correlations between observations from the same patient under different body position compared to the raw LMM. The gamma GLMM provides a more natural distribution assumption of a response expressed as a ratio., Conclusions: A gamma distribution assumption intrinsically models quadratic relationships between the expected value and the variance of the data avoiding prior data transformation. Motivation: Difference in-gel electrophoresis (DIGE)-based protein expression analysis allows assessing the relative expression of proteins in two biological samples differently labeled (Cy5, Cy3 CyDyes). In the same gel, a reference sample is also used (Cy2 CyDye) for spot matching during image analysis and volume normalization. The standard statistical techniques to identify differentially expressed (DE) proteins are the calculation of fold-changes and the comparison of treatment means by the t-test. The analyses rarely accounts for other experimental effects, such as CyDye and gel effects, which could be important sources of noise while detecting treatment effects., Results: We propose to identify DIGE DE proteins using a two-stage linear mixed model. The proposal consists of splitting the overall model for the measured intensity into two interconnected models. First, we fit a normalization model that accounts for the general experimental effects, such as gel and CyDye effects as well as for the features of the associated random term distributions. Second, we fit a model that uses the residuals from the first step to account for differences between treatments in protein-by-protein basis. The modeling strategy was evaluated using data from a melanoma cell study. We found that a heteroskedastic model in the first stage, which also account for CyDye and gel effects, best normalized the data, while allowing for an efficient estimation of the treatment effects. The Cy2 reference channel was used as a covariate in the normalization model to avoid skewness of the residual distribution. Its inclusion improved the detection of DE proteins in the second stage.

Species dispersal studies provide valuable information in biological research. Restricted dispersal may give rise to a non-random distribution of genotypes in space. Detection of spatial genetic structure may therefore provide valuable insight into dispersal. Spatial structure has been treated via autocorrelation analysis with several univariate statistics for which results could dependent on sampling designs. New geostatistical approaches (variogram-based analysis) have been proposed to overcome this problem. However, modelling parametric variograms could be difficult in practice. We introduce a non-parametric variogram-based method for autocorrelation analysis between DNA samples that have been genotyped by means of multilocus-multiallele molecular markers. The method addresses two important aspects of fine-scale spatial genetic analyses: the identification of a non-random distribution of genotypes in space, and the estimation of the magnitude of any non-random structure. The method uses a plot of the squared Euclidean genetic distances vs. spatial distances between pairs of DNA-samples as empirical variogram. The underlying spatial trend in the plot is fitted by a non-parametric smoothing (LOESS, Local Regression). Finally, the predicted LOESS values are explained by segmented regressions (SR) to obtain classical spatial values such as the extent of autocorrelation. For illustration we use multivariate and single-locus genetic distances calculated from a microsatellite data set for which autocorrelation was previously reported. The LOESS/SR method produced a good fit providing similar value of published autocorrelation for this data. The fit by LOESS/SR was simpler to obtain than the parametric analysis since initial parameter values are not required during the trend estimation process. The LOESS/SR method offers a new alternative for spatial analysis.

The aim of this work was to use the Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS) technique to fit simple models for the interpretation of an underlying complex process. In this study, the technique was used to build a statistical model for molecular kinetic data obtained from hemodialyzed patients. By using PLS we derived statistical linear models for the prediction of the equilibrated urea concentration which would be reached 30-60 min after the end of the dialysis session. Models with an average relative prediction error (RPE) of less than 0.05% were achieved. The model predictive accuracy was evaluated in a cross-center study yielding an RPE < 3%. The chosen model was robust to variations such as sampling extraction time demonstrating a high capacity for modeling kinetics. It also was found to be useful for bedside monitoring. Finally, the PLS technique allowed identification of the most important co-variables in the model and of those patients with outlier patterns in their molecular dynamics.

Cluster analysis is one of the crucial steps in gene expression pattern (GEP) analysis. It leads to the discovery or identification of temporal patterns and coexpressed genes. GEP analysis involves highly dimensional multivariate data which demand appropriate tools. A good alternative for grouping many multidimensional objects is self-organizing maps (SOM), an unsupervised neural network algorithm able to find relationships among data. SOM groups and maps them topologically. However, it may be difficult to identify clusters with the usual visualization tools for SOM. We propose a simple algorithm to identify and visualize clusters in SOM (the RP-Q method). The RP is a new node-adaptive attribute that moves in a two dimensional virtual space imitating the movement of the codebooks vectors of the SOM net into the input space. The Q statistic evaluates the SOM structure providing an estimation of the number of clusters underlying the data set. The SOM-RP-Q algorithm permits the visualization of clusters in the SOM and their node patterns. The algorithm was evaluated in several simulated and real GEP data sets. Results show that the proposed algorithm successfully displays the underlying cluster structure directly from the SOM and is robust to different net sizes.

The knowledge of the underlying molecular kinetics is a key point for the development of a dialysis treatment as well as for patient monitoring. In this work, we propose a kinetic inference method that is general enough to be used on different molecular types measured in the spent dialysate. It estimates the number and significance of the compartments involved in the overall process of dialysis by means of a spectral deconvolution technique, characterizing therefore the kinetic behavior of the patient. The method was applied to 52 patients to reveal the underlying kinetics from dialysate time-concentration profiles of urea, which has a well-known molecular kinetic. Three types of behaviors were found: one-compartmental (exponential decay Tau = 180 +/- 61.64 minutes), bicompartmental (Tau1 = 24.96 +/- 19.33 minutes, Tau2 = 222.32 +/- 76.59 minutes), and tricompartmental (Tau1 = 23.03 +/- 14.21 minutes; Tau2 = 85.75 +/- 27.48 minutes; and Tau3 = 337 +/- 85.52 minutes). In patients with bicompartmental kinetics, the Tau2 was related to the level of dialysis dose. The study concluded that spectral deconvolution technique can be considered a powerful tool for molecular kinetics inference that could be integrated in on-line molecular analysis devices. Furthermore, the method could be used in the analysis of poorly understood molecules as well as in new hemodialysis target biomarkers.

Garlic can be infected by a number of viruses, including allexiviruses. The coat protein sequence of an Allexivirus was detected in Argentina and deposited in the EMBL database as Garlic mite-borne filamentous virus (accession number X98991); it has high homology with Garlic virus A (GarV-A). For reliable virus detection, plants should be sampled when virus titer is high to reduce the risk of identifying infected plants as healthy. The objective of this study was to describe fluctuations in the concentration of this Argentine isolate of GarV-A in two garlic cultivars, Morado-INTA and Nieve-INTA, throughout the crop cycle using the double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA). Over a 2-year period, for both cultivars, virus concentration was assessed in samples from the tips section of the youngest leaves of GarV-A-infected plants, and from basal sections of both dormant and devernalized cloves of stored bulbs of Morado-INTA. The concentration of GarV-A varied during the crop cycle, but peaked at the beginning and again at the end of the crop cycle. Virus concentration was slightly higher in devernalized cloves compared with dormant cloves of Morado-INTA. No correlation between virus concentration and mean air temperature was observed. The results of this study recommend sampling times at the beginning of the crop cycle at 64 to 81 days after planting, and towards the end of the crop cycle to evaluate for the presence of GarV-A by DAS-ELISA.

The ratio of oleic to linoleic acids (O/L) and the tocopherol content are important features in determining peanut (Arachis hypogaea) seed shelf life. Soluble carbohydrates are known to be important precursors in roasted peanut flavor. The chemical qualities of Argentine grain are different from those of other countries, but no previous studies that associate grain quality and environmental parameters have been performed. Relationships were determined between O/L, tocopherol and sugar contents, and variations in temperature and rainfall during the grain filling period of Florman INTA peanuts. Dry seed yield was used as another explanatory variable. Multiple regression procedure gave mean temperature (positive coefficient) and total precipitation (negative coefficient) as the explanatory variables for variations in O/L. Total precipitation and dry seed yield (both negative coefficients) were found to be predictor variables for tocopherol and sugar contents. Total precipitation was an explanatory variable included in all of the linear regression models obtained in this study.

There is a higher incidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) with advancing age. Considerable controversy exists as to whether aggressive therapy is indicated in the elderly. With increased life expectancy, a greater number of elderly patients with SAH will require treatment in the future. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of age, aneurysm characteristics, Hunt-Hess grade on admission, race, and smoking status to the eventual outcome. The results of 76 consecutive aneurysms clipped in 67 patients by a single surgeon (B.B.) were analyzed. Among the variables, Hunt-Hess grade at admission seemed to be the only significant factor influencing the outcome in this series (X2MH = 17.136, p < 0.001). Advancing age did not worsen the prognosis after SAH and therefore age should not be a contraindication for aggressive management.
