An ultrastructural histochemical study was carried out on submandibular glands of rabbits. Stainings were performed with dialysed iron (DI), high iron diamine (HID), tannic acid uranyl acetate (TA-U), tannic acid-ferric chloride (TA-F) sequence, and periodate-thiocarbohydrazide-silver proteinate (PA-TCH-SP) method. It was demonstrated that neutral glycoproteins are present in the cells with dark granules of the preterminal tracts, and that neutral and acid glycoproteins are present in the cells with light granules of the terminal tracts. Result are discussed and compared to other previously obtained histochemical and biochemical data.

The most frequent causes of the feeling of "being a burden" in elderly people dependent on others due to chronic disabling pathologies are described. Often this feeling is the main, and sometimes the only reason for their isolation from the community. Suggestions are made for the removal of this feeling, which is felt to be caused mainly by social attitudes and the style and structure of existing social services. It is felt that education in social attitudes should be directed not only to the invalid concerned but also, and primarily, to the community as a whole. In terms of treatment, rehabilitation and social facilities, various appropriate activities are suggested. A careful reorganisation of the institutions offering these services is also recommended.

The effects of progesterone treatment on arylsulphatase activity were studied histochemically and biochemically in the frog oviduct under different experimental conditions. In ovariectomized animals, the hormone induced a large increase in enzyme activity, while in hypophysectomized ones there was a large decrease in this activity. These results indicate that the facilitatory and inhibitory effects of progesterone on arylsulphatase activity are influenced by the presence in situ of the gonad. Hypotheses are advanced to explain different effects of the progesterone treatment.

The development of the submandibular gland has been examined in rabbit embryos from the 22nd day to the birth. The 2 main types of secretory cells, which synthetize dense serous granules or large pale mucous granules can be identified from the 24th day of development. A third type of cells, characterized by granules having different densities, has been identified in the preterminal tracts. The possibility that these cells are similar to some small cell with an highly dilated endoplasmic reticulum found in adult rabbit submandibular glands is discussed.

The arylsulphatase A from rabbit uterus has been purified with a rapid method using Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC). The enzyme is an acid glycoprotein with an apparent molecular weight of 110,000. The enzymatic activity is competitively inhibited by various phosphoesters and various ions such as SO4(2-), PO4(3-) and P2O7(4-).

The secretory granules of the terminal and pre-terminal tracts of the rabbit submandibular gland display distinct features, while the cell morphology is quite similar. Among these cells, some smaller ones presenting an highly dilated endoplasmic reticulum have been identified in the pre-terminal tracts. Some hypothesis have been formulated concerning the function of these cells.
