151. Assessment of Vegetation Dynamics in Xinjiang Using NDVI Data and Machine Learning Models from 2000 to 2023.

Abstract

This study utilizes NASA's Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and employs methods such as mean analysis, trend analysis, and the Hurst index to assess NDVI dynamics in Xinjiang, with a particular focus on desert, meadow, and grassland vegetation. Furthermore, multiple linear regression, random forest, support vector machines, and XGBoost models are applied to construct and evaluate the NDVI prediction models. The key driving forces are identified and ranked based on the results of the optimal model. Changes in the vegetation cover in response to these driving forces are analyzed using the Mann–Kendall test and partial correlation analysis. The results indicate the following: (1) From 2000 to 2023, the annual variation in NDVI in Xinjian fluctuates at a rate of 0.0012 per year. The intra-annual trend follows an inverted U shape, with meadow vegetation exhibiting the highest monthly NDVI fluctuations. (2) During this period, the annual average NDVI in Xinjiang ranges from 0 to 0.3, covering 74.74% of the region. Spatially, higher NDVI values are observed in the north and northwest, while lower values are concentrated in the south and southeast. (3) The overall slope of the variation in NDVI in Xinjiang between 2000 and 2023 ranges between −0.034 and 0.047, indicating no significant upward trend. According to the Hurst index, future projections suggest a shift from vegetation improvement to potential degradation. (4) Machine learning models are developed to predict NDVI, with random forest and XGBoost showing the highest precision. Soil moisture, runoff, and potential evaporation are identified as key drivers. In the last 24 years, the temperatures in Xinjiang have generally increased, while precipitation, soil moisture, and runoff have declined. There is a significant negative correlation between NDVI and both temperature and potential evaporation, while the correlation between NDVI and precipitation, soil moisture, and runoff is positive and significant, with distinct spatial variations throughout the region. The overall trend of vegetation cover in Xinjiang has been increasing, but the future outlook is less promising. Abstract

Permutation polynomials over finite fields are an interesting subject due to their important applications in the areas of mathematics and engineering. In this paper we investigate the trinomial $f(x)=x^{(p-1)q+1}+x^{pq}-x^{q+(p-1)}$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$, where $p$ is an odd prime and $q=p^k$ with $k$ being a positive integer. It is shown that when $p=3$ or $5$, $f(x)$ is a permutation trinomial of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ if and only if $k$ is even. This property is also true for more general class of polynomials $g(x)=x^{(q+1)l+(p-1)q+1}+x^{(q+1)l+pq}-x^{(q+1)l+q+(p-1)}$, where $l$ is a nonnegative integer and $\gcd(2l+p,q-1)=1$. Abstract

The endogenous small GTPase, Rac1, plays a critical role during normal skin wound healing. It remains to be determined whether endogenous Rac1 can be appropriately activated in chronic wounds; if not, whether exogenous Rac1 has therapeutic effects on wound healing. Here we show that Rac1 protein levels were lower in wounds of db/db diabetic mice than wounds in wild type mice during the healing process. To assess the therapeutic potential of exogenous Rac1 in wound healing, we produced a Tat-Rac1 fusion protein that enters into cells through protein transduction. Tat-Rac1 increased proliferation and migration of keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts in vitro. Topical application of Tat-Rac1 accelerated cutaneous wound closure in vivo in db/db mice as well as wild type mice. Further analyses revealed that Tat-Rac1 had faster re-epithelialization, higher keratinocyte proliferation and migration without an earlier onset of myofibroblast activation than vehicle treated wounds. Tat-Rac1 also reduced inflammation in wounds. Our findings revealed the failure of diabetic wounds to elevate Rac1 expression and suggested a therapeutic strategy utilizing a Rac1-based biologic to compensate for this defect thereby promoting wound healing.

193. Targeting Ultimate Accuracy: Face Recognition via Deep Embedding

Abstract

Face Recognition has been studied for many decades. As opposed to traditional hand-crafted features such as LBP and HOG, much more sophisticated features can be learned automatically by deep learning methods in a data-driven way. In this paper, we propose a two-stage approach that combines a multi-patch deep CNN and deep metric learning, which extracts low dimensional but very discriminative features for face verification and recognition. Experiments show that this method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods on LFW dataset, achieving 99.77% pair-wise verification accuracy and significantly better accuracy under other two more practical protocols. This paper also discusses the importance of data size and the number of patches, showing a clear path to practical high-performance face recognition systems in real world.

Abstract

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is an endocrine disease in children, characterized by rapid genital development and secondary sexual characteristics before the age of eight in girls and nine in boys. The premature activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPGA) limits the height of patients in adulthood and is associated with a higher risk of breast cancer. How to prevent and improve the prognosis of CPP is an important problem. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) is widely expressed in the reproductive system, participates in the synthesis and function of regulatory sex hormones, and affects the development and function of gonads. In addition, gut microbiota plays an important role in human health by mainly regulating metabolites, energy homeostasis, and hormone regulation. This review aims to clarify the effect of vitamin D deficiency on the occurrence and development of CPP and explore the role of gut microbiota in it. Although evidence on the interaction between vitamin D deficiency, gut microbiota, and sexual development remains limited, vitamin D supplementation and gut microbiota interventions offer a promising, non-invasive strategy for managing CPP.
