International audience; We present a numerical technique to model the buckling of a rolled thin sheet. It consists in coupling, within the Arlequin framework, a three dimensional model based on 8-nodes tri-linear hexahedron, used in the sheet part located upstream the roll bite, and a well-suited finite element shell model, in the roll bite downstream sheet part, in order to cope with buckling phenomena. The resulting nonlinear problem is solved by the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) that is efficient to capture buckling instabilities. The originalities of the paper ly, first in an Arlequin procedure with moving meshes, second in an efficient application to a thin sheet rolling process. The suggested algorithm is applied to very thin sheet rolling scenarios involving “edges-waves” and “center-waves” defects. The obtained results show the effectiveness of our global approach.

International audience; This paper investigates an alternative mass-sensing technique based on nonlinear micro-/nanoelectromechanical resonant sensors. The proposed approach takes advantage of multi-stability and bifurcations of the hysteretic frequency responses of the electrostatically actuated resonator. For this purpose, a reduced-order model is considered. Numerical results show that sudden jumps in amplitude make the detection of a very small mass possible. Moreover, the limit of detection can be set with the value of the operating frequency. However, when operating at fixed frequency, the study of basins of attraction indicates that this bifurcation-based mass detection does not exhibit the expected robustness. A possible improvement is proposed, based on the reinitialization of the system by a forced jump down on the hysteretic response curve. Using a frequency sweep which varies slowly in sinusoidal form solves the reinitialization problem and enables automatic real-time detection. Finally, the added mass is located on the beam by using the resonance at the first two natural frequencies.

This thesis deals with the different oscillation regimes of brass instruments. It focuses on the way a musician can control and choose these regimes. The association of an instrument, the musician’s lips and his mouth forms a complex dynamical system. Depending on the parameter values, the nonlinear coupling between the mechanical modes of the lips and the acoustical modes of the resonator can lead to a stationary regime, or result in periodic (with different frequencies) or even quasi-periodic self-sustained oscillations. Through muscular control on his/her lips and respiratory control of his/her blowing pressure, a trained musician can select the desired regime.Two main approaches are developed for a better understanding of how musicians select these regimes, and what are the conditions of their emergence. On the one hand, a physical model of brass instrument is studied. It consists in a one-degree-of-freedom lip valve nonlinearly coupled to a modal fit of the input impedance of the instrument. The thresholds and the features of several oscillation regimes of this model are studied through dynamical systems tools, including linear stability analysis, numerical simulation and harmonic balance. The underlying goals are the assessment of the ability of this model to reproduce the behavior of the modelled instrument, and the understanding of transitions between oscillation regimes. The regime change thresholds are particularly examined. On the other hand, an experimental setup is developed in order to measure simultaneously multiple playing parameters used by a musician, together with the resulting instrument variables.Results from these different perspectives provide a better understanding of the behavior of brass instrument oscillation regimes. Experimental measurements carried out with several musicians provide the range of the control parameters while playing. Results of the analysis methods of the model are complementary. A global vision of the occurrence of certain oscillation regimes is provided, along with more detailed information for some operating points. Some specific playing situations are examined in detail, such as the trombone pedal note, the influence of a passive or active mute on the latter, and the nature of multiphonic sounds.; Cette thèse traite des différents régimes d’oscillation des instruments de la famille des cuivres. International audience; Modal analysis of frequency dependent visco-elastic sandwich structures with finite element models leads to a non-linear eigenvalue problem. Many methods have been proposed so far to solve this problem. The present paper compares the asymptotic numerical method to some representative algorithms such as non-linear Arnoldi method, non-linear Jacobi–Davidson method, inverse iteration and iterative shift-invert method. Three mesh refinement levels 1 (~5000 dofs), 2 (~20000 dofs) and 3 (~45000 dofs) have been used. Computational times and accuracy are compared on relevant use cases with frequency dependent visco-elastic materials. Three layered laminated sandwich plates with visco-elastic layers are considered as test cases and two different frequency and temperature dependent materials (ISD112 and PVB) are employed. It is shown that the non-linear Arnoldi method provides the best results in terms of accuracy and CPU time, inverse iteration being the most efficient method for small size problems. Moreover, it is shown that fractional derivative models commonly used to model frequency dependent viscoelastic materials are more CPU intensive than generalized Maxwell models when performing modal analysis of frequency dependent viscoelastic sandwich structures.

In this work, we propose to investigate numerically the incompressible flows by the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) with the Moving Least Square (MLS). The mathematical formulation is based on theNavier-Stokes equations written in a strongly formulation to avoid all difficulties of the numerical integration. The used algorithm is developed to investigate the effective of the ANM with the MLS in the strongly formulation.

In this paper, the forced nonlinear dynamic behavior of thin-walled beams with open cross section under external dynamic loads is analyzed by means of a high order implicit algorithm. This algorithm is developed using a 3 D nonlinear model that takes into account the large torsion without any assumption on the torsion angle amplitude neither in the constitutive law nor in the derivation for governing dynamic equations. This algorithm is built by employing the following four steps: 1 – the space and time discretization procedures, 2 – a change of variable, 3 – a homotopy transformation, 4 – techniques used in the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) (Cochelin et al., 2007; Mottaqui et al., 2010) [1,2]. The originality of this work reside in the fact that we use, for the first time, this algorithm for nonlinear analysis of thin-walled beams with open cross section under an arbitrary load. The space and time discretizations are performed respectively by the finite elements method and by the classical implicit Newmark scheme. The performance of the high order implicit algorithm is tested on four examples of nonlinear dynamic: a mono-symmetrical beam with a T cross section under external dynamic load, a mono-symmetrical beam with U cross-section under external dynamic load, a bi-symmetrical clamped-free beam IPE 300 under harmonic loads and a bi-symmetrical simply supported beam with cruciform section under harmonic loads. A comparison of the obtained results with those computed by the Abaqus industrial code is given. This comparison confirms the robustness, accuracy and efficiency of this high order implicit algorithm.

International audience; In this paper, we present an original work for the examination of the stability of thin-walled beams with open section subject to arbitrary loads. It is based on a 3D nonlinear model where the equilibrium and material constitutive equations are established without any assumption on the torsion angle amplitude which leads to strong nonlinearity. In a recently published article [1], we compared this model without simplification to three others models with cubic, quadratic and linear simplifications. The efficiency of the model is confirmed from benchmark solutions. For this reason, we propose in this work to use this model without simplification in the presence of external forces. When these external forces are eccentric they make the nonlinear problem very difficult to solve because the tangent stiffness matrix depends on the load. In presence of arbitrary loads and large torsion context, the right hand side of the equilibrium equations is highly nonlinear and contributes to the tangent stiffness matrix. For this purpose, we use a continuation algorithm based on the Asymptotic Numerical Method ANM, recently published by the authors in [2]. The ANM is a computational tool for solving nonlinear equations numerically; this is achieved by associating the finite element method and a Taylor series expansions technique without any correction and iteration steps. By this way, we compute a large part of the branch by inverting only one stiffness matrix. The efficiency of the present extended model is tested on original applications of open sections thin-walled beams under arbitrary and eccentric loads. A comparison of the obtained results with those computed by Abaqus industrial code is presented

This thesis deals with the development of solid–shell finite elements for vibration modeling of multilayer structures. Indeed, most of multilayer models in the literature show some limitations in certain geometric and material configurations. Considering these restrictions and in order to develop a more efficient calculation tool, we proposed an approach based on the solid–shell concept. This consists of three-dimensional finite elements enhanced through the Assumed Strain Method. First of all, we have formulated the problem of vibrations of sandwich structures with viscoelastic core. The frequency dependence has been taken into account by using a complex constitutive law. To solve the discretized problem, the Asymptotic Numerical Method, coupled with the homotopy technique and the DIAMANT toolbox approach, was adopted due to the excellent results it provides compared to other methods. Benchmark tests have validated the models and highlighted their advantages over existing elements having the same kinematics. In order to increase damping properties, we directed our attention towards an active vibration control. For this purpose, two piezoelectric finite elements have been developed. These finite elements SHB8PSE and SHB20E are extensions, of the elements SHB8PS and SHB20, respectively. The electromechanical coupling consisted in adding an electrical degree of freedom to each node of these elements. A variety of test problems both in static and vibration analysis conducted on multilayer structures ranging from simple beams to structures involving geometric nonlinearities allowed validating the proposed solid–shell elements. Finally, combining the achievements made in chapters 2 and 3, we proposed a modeling approach for multilayer structures composed of elastic, viscoelastic and piezoelectric layers. Active control is introduced using the piezoelectric properties in order to improve the reduction in vibration amplitudes. Thus, a filter has been mounted between the sensors and actuators. This filter allows amplifying or attenuating the generated electric potential in order to reduce the vibration amplitudes. To solve the resulting problem, we extended the resolution method used in chapter 2. To validate the proposed models, active–passive control tests have been conducted on multilayer plate structures. Finally, some control laws, associated with filters, have shown how this procedure can allow reducing or even avoiding amplification of vibrations; Cette thèse s’intéresse au développement d’éléments finis solide–coques dédiés à la modélisation de structures multicouches sollicitées en vibrations. The research group "Instabilités et Méthodes Numériques Spéci-fiques" operates in the development of numerical tools for solving nonlinear problems by using, in particluar, the Asymptotic Numer- ical Method (ANM). Based on coupling a perturbation method and a spatial discretization, the ANM is effective and makes it possible to precisely determine the transitions such as, for example, loss of uniqueness of the solution. The objective of this thesis is to offer al- ternative numerical methods both robust and effective, for solving the Navier-Stokes equations. We are interested in steady bifurcation analysis, and in time dependent flow simulation .Initially, numerical bifurcation analysis techniques for steady flow problems in very large number of degrees of freedom are de- scribed. These techniques, based on the ANM, are implemented in the multiphysics ELMER open-source software. We detail the im- plementation of the steady bifurcation analysis methods such as continuation of solution branches, detection of load parameter critical values and branch switching at steady bifurcation point. The emer- gence of a geometric progression in ANM series terms in the vicinity of a singularity is described. Discussions are proposed for the case of symmetry breaking bifurcations. The methods described in this the- sis are validated using reference cases of the literature, such as flow in pipe with sudden expansion/contraction. New results for three- dimensional flow in a sudden expansion, are obtained according to a parametric study. The use of high performance computing libraries makes possible the bifurcation analysis for models with high number of degrees of freedom, in affordable computing times. Secondly, high-order solvers are proposed for the simulation of un- steady flows. Homotopy with convex combination and a perturba- tion technique, are coupled to a time integration scheme in order to solve the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. The case of two- dimensional flow around a fixed cylinder is studied. This reference problem allows us to validate and discuss proposed improvements. In this way, we confirm, in the numerical tests, that it is possible to reduce the computation time by avoiding operators assembly and resolution of unuseful linear systems in respect to the solution quality. In addition, new lighting is provided on the use of Padé approximants over previous work. The use of these nonlinear solvers allows us to significantly reduce the number of matrix factorization retaining them valid for many time steps, and sometimes on the complete time do- main. Many opportunities are envisaged, in particular the analysis of ANM series for the case of limit point, the Hopf bifurcation, the study of other cases of three-dimensional flow, the fluid-structure interaction. Similarly, the combination of ANM models with reduction techniques f stable periodic orbits are possible., Le groupe de recherche Instabilités et Méthodes Numériques Spécifiques mène ses activités dans le développement d’outils numé- riques pour la résolution de problèmes non linéaires en utilisant, no- tamment, la Méthode Asymptotique Numérique (MAN). Basée sur le couplage d’une méthode de perturbation et de discrétisation spa- tiale, la MAN est efficace et permet de déterminer précisément les transitions telles que, par exemple, la perte d’unicité de la solution. L’objectif de ce travail de thèse est de proposer des méthodes numé- riques alternatives à la fois robustes, performantes pour la résolution des équations de Navier-Stokes. Nous nous intéressons à l’analyse de bifurcation stationnaire, mais aussi à la simulation d’écoulement dépendant du temps. Dans un premier temps, des techniques d’analyse de bifurcation nu- mérique pour des problèmes stationnaires à très grand nombre de degrés de liberté sont décrites. Nous implémentons ces techniques, basées sur la MAN, dans le logiciel open-source multi-physique ELMER . Nous détaillons l’implémentation des méthodes d’analyse de bifurcation stationnaire telles que la continuation de branches solutions, les techniques de détection des valeurs critiques du pa- ramètre de charge et les changements de branche en un point de bifurcation stationnaire. L’émergence d’une progression géométrique dans les termes de séries MAN à l’approche d’une singularité est dé- crite. Des discussions sont proposées pour le cas de bifurcations par brisure de symétrie. Les méthodes proposées dans ce travail sont validées en utilisant des cas référencés dans la littérature, tels que des écoulements dans des conduites à expansion/contraction sou- daine. Une étude paramétrique permet de présenter de nouveaux ré- sultats pour les écoulements tridimensionnels dans une expansion brusque. L’utilisation de librairies de calculs intensifs rend possible la réalisation d’analyse de bifurcation pour des modèles à très grand nombre de degrés de liberté, en des temps de calcul abordables. Dans un deuxième temps, des solveurs d’ordre élevé sont proposés pour la simulation d’écoulements instationnaires. Une technique d’homotopie à combinaison convexe et une technique de pertur- bation, sont couplées à un schéma d’intégration temporelle pour résoudre les équations instationnaires de Navier-Stokes. Le cas d’un écoulement bidimensionnel autour d’un cylindre fixe est étudié. Ce problème de référence nous permet de valider et discuter des amélio- rations proposées. De cette manière, nous confirmons, au cours des essais numériques, qu’il est possible de réduire les temps de cal- cul en évitant des assemblages d’opérateurs et des résolutions de systèmes linéaires qui n’apportent aucune information supplémen- taire pour la qualité des solutions. De plus, un nouvel éclairage est apporté sur l’utilisation des approximants de Padé par rapport aux travaux antérieurs. L’utilisation de ces solveurs non linéaires nous permet de réduire significativement le nombre de factorisations de matrice en les conservant valides pour un grand nombre de pas de temps, et parfois sur le domaine temporel complet. De nombreuses perspectives sont envisagées, notamment pour l’analyse des séries pour le cas d’un point limite, la bifurcation de Hopf, l’étude d’autre cas d’écoulements tridimensionnels, le couplage fluide-structure. De même, l’association des techniques MAN aux techniques de réductions de modèles et l’analyse de stabilité des orbites périodiques sont envisageables.

International audience; The aim of this article is to develop a reduction method to determine the forced harmonic response of viscoelastic sandwich structures at a reasonable computational cost. The numerical resolution is based on the asymptotic numerical method. This type of problem is complex, and its number of degrees of freedom is double the number of the undamped structure, leading to a high computational time. To address the problem, three reduction methods are evaluated, which differ from the projection operator. Numerical tests have been performed in the case of cantilever sandwich beams. The comparison of the results obtained by the reduction order resolution with those given by the full order resolution shows both a good agreement and a significant reduction in computational cost.

This work addresses the large amplitude nonlinear vibratory behavior of a rotating cantilever beam, with applications to turbomachinery and turbopropeller blades. The aim of this work is twofold. Firstly, we investigate the effect of rotation speed on the beam nonlinear vibrations and especially on the hardening/softening behavior of its resonances and the appearance of jump phenomena at large amplitude. Secondly, we compare three models to simulate the vibrations. The first two are based on analytical models of the beam, one of them being original. Those two models are discretized on appropriate mode basis and solve by a numerical following path method. The last one is based on a finite-element discretization and integrated in time. The accuracy and the validity range of each model are exhibited and analyzed. Wrinkling is an instability phenomenon generally observed in thin structures with membrane's behavior. Those thin structures have no rigidity to flexion and are therefore used in traction. In this thesis, we developed a reduction model's technique for the modeling of wrinkling phenomenon in thin membranes. This technique, based on the double scale Fourier series, allow us to deduce from a full membrane model, a reduced membrane model that is able to take into account the global and local instability of the structure. The critical load and critical wavelength are determined analytically on one side, then numerically on the other side. Numerical exemples are conducted to validate the numerical model towards the analytical one. Numerical models studied take into account both full and reduce membrane models. The full model is simulated in Abaqus and solved numerically using the arc length method and the reduced model is implemented in Matlab and solved numerically using the asymptotic numerical method. We studied the membrane behavior under mechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanical loading. The results obtained show that the full membrane model can be replaced by the reduced one in determining critical loads and corresponding wavelengths. The gain in computation time obtained is important, due to the coarse mesh required by the reduced model. The reduced model is very sensitive to membrane's boundaries conditions and requires to have a quasi constant wavelength along the membrane width; Le plissement est généralement observé dans les structures minces ayant un comportement de type membrane. Ces structures minces ne supportent pas d'effort de flexion et sont donc sollicitées en traction. Dans cette thèse, nous avons développé une technique de réduction de modèle pour la modélisation du plissement des membranes minces. Cette technique, basée sur les séries de Fourier à double échelle, permet de déduire d'un modèle complet de membrane, un modèle réduit capable de prendre en compte les instabilités globales et locales. Les valeurs critiques de charge et longueur d'onde sont déterminées analytiquement puis numériquement. Des exemples numériques nous ont permis de valider le modèle numérique par rapport au modèle analytique. Les modèles numériques étudiés prennent en compte le modèle complet et le modèle réduit de la membrane. Le modèle complet est simulé dans Abaqus et résolu numériquement à l'aide de la méthode de la longueur d'arc et le modèle réduit est implémenté dans Matlab et résolu numériquement à l'aide de la méthode asymptotique numérique. Nous avons étudié le comportement de la membrane sous sollicitation mécanique, thermique et thermo-mécanique. Les résultats obtenus montrent que le modèle réduit est capable de se substituer au modèle complet dans la détermination des contraintes critiques et longueurs d'onde correspondantes. Le gain en temps de calcul obtenu est important, ceci grâce à la très faible densité de maillage requis par le modèle réduit. Le modèle réduit est très sensible aux conditions aux bords de la membrane et requiert d'avoir une longueur d'onde des plis quasiment constante dans la largeur de la membrane

International audience; In many industrial processes, geometric strip defects may be generated by buckling due to excessive residual stresses and these defects are difficult to control. Usually residual stresses have complex distributions so that defects with complex shapes appear. In strip rolling, strips are fabricated under tension, which has an impact on the shape and the amplitude of the defects. This tension can hide completely or partially the defects that increase and evolve during tension release. In this work we calculate flatness defects of strips generated by residual stresses, with and without tension, by using a shell finite element model based on the asymptotic numerical method (ANM).

Modeling and design of composite viscoelastic structures with high damping powerThe aim of this thesis is to develop numerical tools to determine accurately damping properties of composite sandwich structures for the design of lightweight viscoelastic sandwichs structures with high damping power. In a first step, we developed a generic tool implemented in Matlab for determining damping properties in free vibration of viscoelastic sandwich plates with laminate faces composed of multilayers. The advantage of this tool, which is based on a finite element formulation, is its ability to take into account the anisotropy of composite layers, the material non-linearity of the viscoelastic core induiced by the frequency-dependent viscoelastic laws and various boundary conditions . The nonlinear complex eigenvalues problem is solved by coupling homotopy technic, asymptotic numerical method and automatic differentiation. Then for the continuous study of a modeling parameter on damping properties of viscoelastic sandwichs, we proposed a generic method to solve the nonlinear residual complex eigenvalues problem which has in addition to the frequency dependence introduced by the viscoelastic core, a modeling parameter dependence that describes a very specific study interval. This resolution is based on asymptotic numerical method, automatic differentiation, homotopy technique and continuation technic and takes into account various viscoelastic laws. We propose after that, two separate formulations to study effects on the damping properties according to two modeling parameters which are important in the design of high viscoelastic sandwichs with high damping power. The first is laminate fibers orientation in the sandwich reference and the second is layers thickness which when they are well defined allow to obtain not only sandwich structures with high damping power but also very light. The highly nonlinear complex eigenvalues problems obtained in these formulations are solved by the new method of resolution of eigenvalue residual problem with two nonlinearity developed before. International audience; Large-amplitude non-linear vibrations of micro- and nano-electromechanical resonant sensors around their primary resonance are investigated. A comprehensive multiphysics model based on the Galerkin decomposition method coupled with the averaging method is developed in the case of electrostatically actuated clamped-clamped resonators. The model is purely analytical and includes the main sources of non-linearities as well as fringing field effects. The influence of the higher modes and the validation of the model is demonstrated with respect to the shooting method as well as the harmonic balance coupled with the asymptotic numerical method. This model allows designers to investigate the sensitivity variation of resonant sensors in the non-linear regime with respect to the electrostatic forcing.

Combinig the harmonic balance method (HBM) and a continuation method is a well-known technique to follow the periodic solutions of dynamical systems when a control parameter is varied. However, since deriving the algebraic system containing the Fourier coefficients can be a highly cumbersome procedure, the classical HBM is often limited to polynomial (quadratic and cubic) nonlinearities and/or a few harmonics. Several variations on the classical HBM, such as the incremental HBM or the alternating frequency/time domain HBM, have been presented in the literature to overcome this shortcoming. Here, we present an alternative approach that can be applied to a very large class of dynamical systems (autonomous or forced) with smooth equations. The main idea is to systematically recast the dynamical system in quadratic polynomial form before applying the HBM. Once the equations have been rendered quadratic, it becomes obvious to derive the algebraic system and solve it by the so-called ANM continuation technique. International audience; In this paper we present a new numerical technique to model the buckling phenomena under residual stresses induced by rolling process. This technique consists in coupling two finite element models: the first one consists in a three dimensional model which is used to model the three dimensional behaviour of the sheet in the roll bite; the second model is based on a shell formulation well adapted to large displacements and rotations, it will be used to compute buckling of the strip out of the roll bite. We propose to couple these two models by using Arlequin method.

A finite element model is derived from a classical zigzag model with shear deformation in the viscoelastic layer. The aim of the present work is to establish numerical models and develop numerical tools to design multilayer composites structures with high damping properties. To fulfill this purpose, a finite element model has been developed for vibration analysis of a sandwich plate (elastic orthotropic)/(viscoelastic orthotropic)/(elastic orthotropic). A numerical study from the variation of the damping properties of the structures was performed according to the faces materials fibers orientation.

Vibrations are usually undesired phenomena as they may cause discomfort, disturbance, damage, and sometimes destruction of machines and structures. It must be reduced or controlled or eliminated. For this reason, the vibrations attenuation became a major issue for scientists and researchers in order to develop effective solutions for these problems. Many technologies have been developed. Among these technologies, the nonlinear vibration absorbers have significant performance in the vibration attenuation over a wide frequency band. In this context, this thesis focuses on the analysis and optimization of nonlinear vibration absorbers. The objective of the thesis is to analyze the nonlinear dynamic behavior of systems with nonlinear vibration absorbers. For this, a dynamic model of a two degrees of freedom system is developed. The Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) is used to solve the nonlinear equations of motion. The performance of this method is shown via a comparison with the Newton-Raphson method. The nonlinear modal analysis system with cubic nonlinearity is made by an explicit formulation of the nonlinear Frequency Response Functions (FRFs) and Nonlinear Normal Modes (MNNs). An experimental study is performed to validate the numerical results., Les vibrations qui sont en général source de dérangement, d’usure et même destruction des machines et structures mécaniques doivent être contrôlées ou éliminées. Pour cette raison, la lutte contre les vibrations est devenue depuis des années un enjeu majeur pour les chercheurs de laboratoire et de développement dans l’industrie afin de développer des solutions efficaces contre ces problèmes. De nombreuses technologies ont donc été développées. Parmi ces technologies, les absorbeurs de vibration non linéaires présentent des performances importantes dans l’atténuation de vibration sur une large bande de fréquences. C’est dans ce contexte que cette thèse se focalise sur l’analyse et l’optimisation des absorbeurs de vibration non linéaires. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’analyser le comportement dynamique non linéaire des systèmes présentant des absorbeurs de vibration non linéaires. Pour cela, un modèle dynamique d’un système à deux degrés de liberté est développé mettant en équations le comportement non linéaire. La résolution des équations de mouvement est faite par la Méthode Asymptotique Numérique (MAN). La performance de cette méthode est montrée via une comparaison avec la méthode de Newton-Raphson. L’analyse des modes non linéaires du système ayant une non-linéarité cubique est faite par une formulation explicite des Fonctions de Réponse en Fréquence non linéaires (FRFs) et les Modes Normaux Non linéaires (MNNs). Un démonstrateur sur la base d’un système simple à deux degré de liberté est mis en place afin de recaler les modèles envisagés sur la base des résultats expérimentaux trouvés.

International audience; This paper revisits the modeling of compressive failure of long fiber composite materials by considering a multiscale finite element approach. It is well known that this failure follows from a fiber microbuckling phenomenon. Fiber microbuckling is governed by both material and geometrical quantities: the elastoplastic shear behavior of the matrix and the fiber misalignment. Although all these parameters are easily accounted by a finite element analysis at the local level, the failure is also influenced by macrostructural quantities. That is why a multilevel finite element model (FE²) is relevant to describe the compressive failure of composite. Furthermore, fiber local buckling leads to a loss of ellipticity of the macroscopic model, which can be a criterion of failure.

International audience; A study of the Nonlinear Normal Modes (NNMs) of a two degrees of freedommechanical system with a bilateral elastic stop for one of them is considered. Theissue related to the non-smoothness of the impact force is handled through aregularization technique. The Harmonic Balance Method (HBM) with a large numberof harmonics, combined with the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM), is used tosolve the regularized problem. The results are validated from periodic orbits obtainedanalytically in the time domain by direct integration of the non-regular problem. Thefirst NNM shows an elaborate dynamics with the occurrence of multiple impacts perperiod, internal resonance and instabilities. On the other hand, the second NNMpresents a more simple, almost linear, dynamics. The two NNMs converge asympto-tically (for an infinite energy) toward two other Linear Normal Modes, correspondingto the system with a gap equal to zero.

Two original algorithms are proposed for the computation of bifurcation points in fluid mechanics. These algorithms consist of finding the zero values of a specific indicator. To compute this indicator a perturbation method is used which leads to an analytical expression of this indicator. Two kinds of instability are considered: stationary and Hopf bifurcations. To prove the efficiency and advantages of such numerical methods several numerical tests are discussed.

International audience; This paper is concerned with stability behaviour and imperfection sensitivity of thin elastic shells. The aim is to determine the reduction of the critical buckling load as a function of the imperfection amplitude. For this purpose, the direct calculation of the so-called fold line connecting all the limit points of the equilibrium branches when the imperfection varies is performed. This fold line is the solution of an extended system demanding the criticality of the equilibrium. The Asymptotic Numerical Method is used as an alternative to Newton-like incremental-iterative procedures for solving this extended system. It results in a very robust and efficient path-following algorithm that takes the singularity of the tangent stiffness matrix into account. Two specific types of imperfections are detailed and several numerical examples are discussed.

This leads to heterogeneous plastic deformations throughout the strip width and then to out of plane displacements to relax residual stresses. In this work we present a new numerical technique to model the buckling phenomena under residual stresses induced by rolling process. This technique consists in coupling two finite element models: the first one consists in a three dimensional model based on 8-node tri-linear hexahedron which is used to model the three dimensional behaviour of the sheet in the roll bite; we introduce in this model, residual stresses from a full simulation of rolling (a plane-strain elastoplastic finite element model) or from an analytical profile. The second model is based on a shell formulation well adapted to large displacements and rotations; it will be used to compute buckling of the strip out of the roll bite. We propose to couple these two models by using Arlequin method. The originality of the proposed algorithm is that in the context of Arlequin method, the coupling area varies during the rolling process. Furthermore we use the asymptotic numerical method (ANM) to perform the buckling computations taking into account geometrical nonlinearities in the shell model. This technique allows one to solve nonlinear problems using high order algorithms well adapted to problems in the presence of instabilities. The proposed algorithm is applied to some rolling cases where ``edges-waves'' and ``center-waves'' defects of the sheet are observed.

Friction stir welding is a recent process that has been developed by the British Welding Institute TWI "The Welding Institute" since 1990s. This process, generally used in aerospace, does not need additional material and allows mainly joining plates of aluminum alloys which are difficult to weld by the classical welding processes. It consists in mixing the base material using a tool comprising a pin and a shoulder which heats the plates to be welded by friction. The modeling of this process is very complex since it involves the coupling between mechanical, thermal and metallurgical phenomena. The mixing in welding process FSW is difficult to simulate using finite element method in lagrangian framework since the area near the welding tool is submitted to large deformations. So remeshing procedure is often required. However, remeshing can be very expensive and difficult to perform for three-dimensional problems. Moreover, after remeshing step, it is necessary to interpolate the fields (velocities, constraints ...) corresponding to the current solution, which may lead to additional errors in the calculation (called numerical diffusion). We propose in this work models based on meshless methods called "Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics SPH" and Moving Least Square method for the simulation of this welding process. These models are formulated in lagrangian framework and use the strong form of partial differential equations. The first model based on SPH considers the welding zone as a weakly compressible non-newtonian fluid and whose viscosity depends on the temperature. This model is proposed for the numerical simulation of thermo-mechanical behavior of a welded material by FSW process. The second model is a first order implicit iterative algorithm proposed to simulate material mixing in the case a visco-plastic behavior using the MLS method and the collocation technique. The third model is a high order implicit algorithm based on the coupling of MLS method and Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM). This algorithm allows reducing the computation time by comparison with the first order implicit iterative algorithm. Nous proposons dans ce travail des modèles basés sur la méthode sans maillage dite "Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics SPH" et la méthode des moindres carrés mobiles (Moving Least Square MLS) pour la simulation de ce procédé. Ces modèles sont formulés dans le cadre lagrangien et utilisent la forme forte des équations aux dérivées partielles. Friction stir welding is a recent process that has been developed by the British Welding Institute TWI "The Welding Institute" since 1990s. This process, generally used in aerospace, does not need additional material and allows mainly joining plates of aluminum alloys which are difficult to weld by the classical welding processes. It consists in mixing the base material using a tool comprising a pin and a shoulder which heats the plates to be welded by friction. The modeling of this process is very complex since it involves the coupling between mechanical, thermal and metallurgical phenomena. The mixing in welding process FSW is difficult to simulate using finite element method in lagrangian framework since the area near the welding tool is submitted to large deformations. So remeshing procedure is often required. However, remeshing can be very expensive and difficult to perform for three-dimensional problems. Moreover, after remeshing step, it is necessary to interpolate the fields (velocities, constraints ...) corresponding to the current solution, which may lead to additional errors in the calculation (called numerical diffusion). We propose in this work models based on meshless methods called "Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics SPH" and Moving Least Square method for the simulation of this welding process. These models are formulated in lagrangian framework and use the strong form of partial differential equations. The first model based on SPH considers the welding zone as a weakly compressible non-newtonian fluid and whose viscosity depends on the temperature. This model is proposed for the numerical simulation of thermo-mechanical behavior of a welded material by FSW process. 11 pages; With the interactive continuation tool Diamanlab, solution branches of a parametric nonlinear problem are computed as sets of Taylor-based solutions stored in checkpoints. Theoretical aspects and implementation are generic, taking advantage of the efficient higher-order asymptotic numerical method in its Diamant form that interprets the generic nonlinear problem as a sequence of linear ones, of Automatic Differentiation (AD) for Taylor coefficient computations, of object-oriented programming and graphical user interface capabilities of MATLAB. The implementation involves four classes devoted to the interactive management of the continuation, to the manipulation of a generic system of nonlinear equations, to the checkpoint management and to higher-order AD, respectively. In practice, any analytical nonlinear system of equation may be implemented in a natural way as a subclass of the generic system class, then solved in an easy manner using the graphical user interface. A benchmark of classical nonlinear problems is provided to serve as a basis for the implementation user-defined problems. Diamanlab usage and bifurcation detection are discussed on the Brusselator problem whose solution involves three interconnected loops. Additional user-defined graphics are presented for the Bratu problem.

This paper presents the outcome of power series analysis in the framework of the Asymptotic Numerical Method. We theoretically demonstrate and numerically evidence that the emergence of geometric power series in the vicinity of simple bifurcation points is a generic behavior. So we propose to use this hallmark as a bifurcation indicator to locate and compute very efficiently any simple bifurcation point. Finally, a power series that recovers an optimal step length is build in the neighborhood of bifurcation points. The reliability and robustness of this powerful approach is then demonstrated on two application examples from structural mechanics and hydrodynamics.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to solve non‐linear parametric thermal models defined in degenerated geometries, such as plate and shell geometries.Design/methodology/approachThe work presented in this paper is based in a combination of the proper generalized decomposition (PGD) that proceeds to a separated representation of the involved fields and advanced non‐linear solvers. A particular emphasis is put on the asymptotic numerical method.FindingsThe authors demonstrate that this approach is valid for computing the solution of challenging thermal models and parametric models.Originality/valueThis is the first time that PGD is combined with advanced non‐linear solvers in the context of non‐linear transient parametric thermal models.

This work is a collaboration between EDF R&D and the Laboratory of Mechanics and Acoustics. The objective is to develop theoretical and numerical tools to compute nonlinear normal modes (NNMs) of structures with localized nonlinearities. We use an approach combining the harmonic balance and the asymptotic numerical methods, known for its robustness principally for smooth systems. Regularization techniques are used to apply this approach for the study of nonsmooth problems. Moreover, several aspects of the method are improved to allow the computation of NNMs for systems with a high number of degrees of freedom (DOF). Finally, the method is implemented in Code_Aster, an open-source finite element solver developed by EDF R&D. The nonlinear normal modes of a two degrees-of-freedom system are studied and some original characteristics are observed. These observations are then used to develop a methodology for the study of systems with a high number of DOFs. The developed method is finally used to compute the NNMs for a model U-tube of a nuclear plant steam generator. The analysis of the NNMs reveals the presence of an interaction between an out-of-plane (low frequency) and an in-plane (high frequency) modes, a result also confirmed by the experiment. This modal interaction is not possible using linear modal analysis and confirms the interest of NNMs as a diagnostic tool in structural dynamics., Le travail de cette thèse a été réalisé dans le cadre d'une collaboration entre EDF R&D et le LMA de Marseille (CNRS). Le but était de développer des outils théoriques et numériques pour le calcul de modes non-linéaires de structures industrielles possédant des non-linéarités localisées à jeu. La méthode de calcul utilisée est une combinaison de la méthode d'équilibrage harmonique (EH) et de la méthode asymptotique numérique (MAN), appelée EHMAN. Elle est réputée pour sa robustesse sur les problèmes réguliers. L'enjeu de ce travail de thèse est de l'appliquer sur des problèmes non-réguliers régularisés de type butée à jeu pour lequel un grand nombre d'harmonique est nécessaire. Des améliorations ont été apportées à la méthode de base pour rendre effectif le traitement de modèles à "grand" nombre de degrés de liberté (DDL). L'algorithme Fast Fourier Transform est utilisé pour accélérer le calcul des termes non-linéaires. Le calcul de la matrice jacobienne a été optimisé. Et la dissociation du nombre d'harmoniques entre les variables de déplacement et de force non-linéaire a été introduite. Les développements réalisés pendant la thèse ont été capitalisés par la création de nouveaux opérateurs dans Code_Aster. Une étude approfondie d'un système à 2 degrés de liberté a permis de faire émerger quelques caractéristiques des systèmes non-linéaires à jeu. Celles-ci ont servi entre autre à établir une méthodologie pour l'étude de systèmes à grand nombre de DDL. Pour finir, la potentialité des modes non-linéaires comme outil de diagnostic vibratoire est démontrée avec l'étude d'un tube cintré de générateur de vapeur. Le calcul des modes non-linéaires a monté l'existence d'une interaction entre un mode hors-plan (basse fréquence) et un mode plan (haute fréquence) expliquant des régimes vibratoires non-standards. Ce résultat, impossible à obtenir avec les outils de l'analyse modale linéaire, est confirmé expérimentalement.

International audience; This paper is concerned with the implementation of the asymptotic-numerical method on a parallel computer, with a domain decomposition technique. After some recalls on the ANM principles and on the particularities of the linear systems that have to be solved, it is shown that the so-called ‘for repeted right-hand-side’ FETI domain decomposition method is well adapted. The performance of this combination MAN+FETI is dicussed and analysed on various examples taken from geometrically non linear elasticity.; Ce papier est consacré à la mise en oeuvre des Méthodes Asymptotiques Numériques sur une machine parallèle, par décomposition de domaine. Après avoir rappelé les principes généraux des MAN et les particularités des systèmes linéaires qui en résultent, on justifie l'utilisation d'une méthode de décomposition de domaine de type FETI dans sa version dite ≪ pour seconds membres répétés ≫. Les performances de ce couple MAN et FETI sont discutées et analysées sur des exemples de problèmes d'élasticité en non linéaire géométrique.

Periodic solutions of nonlinear dynamical systems are the focus of this work. We compute periodic solutions through a BVP formulation, solved with two numerical methods: - a spectral method, in the frequency domain: the hogh-order Harmonic Balance Method, using a quadratic formulation of the original equations. We also propose an extension to nonrational nonlinearities. - a pseudo-spectral method, in the time domain : the arthogonal collocation at Gauss point, with piece-wise polynomial interpolation. Both methods lead to a system of nonlinear algebraic equations, and its solutions are computed by a continuation algorithm : the Asymptotic Numerical Method. These methods are embeded in the numerical package MANLAB, together with a linear stability analysis. Application We then apply these methods to physical models of several instruments : a clarinet, a saxophone, and a violin. The clarinet model contains a non-smooth contact between the reed and the mouthpiece. The study focuses on the evolution of frequency, loudness, and spectrum along the branch of periodic solutions when varying the mouth pressure. The saxophone model is very similar, but an experimental characterization of the bore is used in that case. Finally, the violin model with a non-smooth Coulomb contact law and a simplified resonator is studied, showing the variety of models that can be treated using this method., Ces travaux s'articulent autour du calcul des solutions périodiques dans les systèmes dynamiques non linéaires, au moyen de méthodes numériques de continuation. La recherche de solutions périodiques se traduit par un problème avec conditions aux limites périodiques, pour lequel nous avons implémenté deux méthodes d'approximation : - Une méthode spectrale dans le domaine fréquentiel : l'équilibrage harmonique d'ordre élevé, qui repose sur une formulation quadratique des équations. Nous proposons en outre une formulation originale permettant d'étendre cette méthode aux cas de non-linéarités non rationnelles. - Une méthode pseudo-spectrale par éléments dans le domaine temporel : la collocation à l'aide fonctions polynômiales par morceaux. Ces méthodes transforment le problème continu en un système d'équations algébriques non linéaires, dont les solutions sont calculées par continuation à l'aide de la méthode asymptotique numérique. L'ensemble de ces outils, intégrés au code de calcul MANLAB et complétés d'une analyse linéaire de stabilité, sont alors utilisés pour l'étude des régimes périodiques d'une classe particulière de systèmes dynamiques non linéaires : les instruments de musique auto-oscillants. Un modèle physique non-régulier de clarinette est étudié en détail : à partir de la branche de solutions statiques et ses bifurcations, on calcule les différentes branches de solutions périodiques, ainsi que leur stabilité et leurs bifurcations. Ce modèle est ensuite adapté au cas du saxophone, pour lequel on intègre une caractérisation acoustique expérimentale, afin de mieux tenir compte de la géométrie complexe de l'instrument. Enfin, nous étudions un modèle physique simplifié de violon, avec une non-régularité liée frottement de Coulomb. Cette dernière application illustre ainsi la polyvalence des outils développés face aux différents types de non-régularité.

International audience; In this paper, we extend the method proposed by Cochelin and Vergez [A high order purely frequency-based harmonic balance formulation for continuation of periodic solutions, Journal of Sound and Vibration, 324 (2009) 243-262] to the case of non-polynomial nonlinearities. This extension allows for the computation of branches of periodic solutions of a broader class of nonlinear dynamical systems. The principle remains to transform the original ODE system into an extended polynomial quadratic system for an easy application of the harmonic balance method (HBM). The transformation of non-polynomial terms is based on the differentiation of state variables with respect to the time variable, shifting the nonlinear non-polynomial nonlinearity to a time-independent initial condition equation, not concerned with the HBM. The continuation of the resulting algebraic system is here performed by the asymptotic numerical method (high order Taylor series representation of the solution branch) using a further differentiation of the non-polynomial algebraic equation with respect to the path parameter. A one dof vibro-impact system is used to illustrate how an exponential nonlinearity is handled, showing that the method works at very high order, 1000 in that case. Various kinds of nonlinear functions are also treated, and finally the nonlinear free pendulum is addressed, showing that very accurate periodic solutions can be computed with the proposed method.

International audience; The Manitoo library is devoted to the resolution of analytical non-linear problems using a high order method called asymptotic numerical method. We describe here the Object Oriented design of this library and especially the choices made to obtain a quite generic and flexible numerical solver. Through classical examples, we present a comparison with some existing tools implemented in Matlab and Fortran 77.

Lam3/Tec3 is a 3D steady-state FEM rolling model using a hexahedral mesh, proved in the past to be poorly adapted to modelling flatness defects in strip rolling. Shell elements are indeed much more suitable for this purpose, i.e. to predict buckling of plates under residual stresses. Thus, the purpose of this work is to improve Lam3/Tec3 by coupling it iteratively with a shell FEM of plate buckling under residual stresses. This model, called “MAN”, is based on the Asymptotic Numerical Method for the resolution of non linear problems. Compared to existing models in the literature, it shows sufficient accuracy to compute the critical buckling loads and the corresponding buckling modes, it can solve more complex cases (complex residual stress fields and buckling modes), and has a post-buckling capability, which distinguishes it from the other models. We have compared results of Lam3/Tec3-MAN in the decoupled as well as the iteratively coupled modes, and also with a version of Lam3/Tec3 including a simplified buckling model proposed by Counhaye (simple and fast, but unable to study post-buckling). The analysis of the results is focussed on the one hand on the comparison with experimental transverse profiles of the longitudinal stress, obtained by "flatness rolls", on the other hand on the interactions between the mechanical fields in the roll bite and post bite. Profiles obtained at the position of the flatness rolls are in good agreement with the measurements. The results prove the importance of a coupled rolling / buckling model, be it coupled strongly or iteratively, to capture the details of the stress profiles. It is also shown that it is essential to reproduce the latter with a precision of a few MPa in order to predict correctly buckling and post-buckling.; Lam3/Tec3 est un modèle stationnaire éléments finis 3D de laminage dans lequel le maillage de la tôle est composé d'éléments hexaédriques. International audience; In this paper, we develop a novel algorithm for the dimensional reduction of the models of hyperelastic solids undergoing large strains. Unlike standard proper orthogonal decomposition methods, the proposed algorithm minimizes the use of the Newton algorithms in the search of non-linear equilibrium paths of elastic bodies.The proposed technique is based upon two main ingredients. On one side, the use of classic proper orthogonal decomposition techniques, that extract the most valuable information from pre-computed, complete models. This information is used to build global shape functions in a Ritz-like framework.On the other hand, to reduce the use of Newton procedures, an asymptotic expansion is made for some variables of interest. This expansion shows the interesting feature of possessing one unique tangent operator for all the terms of the expansion, thus minimizing the updating of the tangent stiffness matrix of the problem.The paper is completed with some numerical examples in order to show the performance of the technique in the framework of hyperelastic (Kirchhoff-Saint Venant and neo-Hookean) solids.

International audience; This work deals with damped nonlinear forced vibrations of thin elastic rectangular plates subjected to harmonic excitation by an asymptotic numerical method. Using the harmonic balance method and Hamilton’s principle, the governing equation is converted into a static formulation. A mixed formulation is used to transform the problem from cubic nonlinearity to quadratic one sequence. Displacement, stress and frequency are represented by power series with respect to a path parameter. Equating the like powers of this parameter, the nonlinear governing equation is transformed into a sequence of linear problems with the same stiffness matrix. Through a single matrix inversion, a considerable number of terms of the perturbation series can easily be computed with a limited computation time. The starting point, corresponding to a regular solution, is obtained by the Newton–Raphson method. In order to increase the step length, Padé approximants are used. Numerical tests are presented and compared with numerical and analytical results in the literature, for different boundary conditions, excitations and damping coefficients.

International audience; Severe thin strip cold rolling conditions usually induce heterogeneity of in-bite plastic deformation always translated to irregular stress field. This stress field may dwell sufficiently compressive in several out-of-bite areas to cause buckling (flatness defects) which generates stress reorganisation in rolled strip and probably affects the bite zone. Hence, out-of-bite buckling, in-bite elastic-(visco)plastic deformation and thermo-mechanical roll-stack/strip interaction may be strongly coupled. However, a completely coupled model providing realistic rolled strip shape specially when flatness defects occur is not easy to establish. This call for two ways of flatness defect modelling in thin strip rolling: with a completely coupled approach but using a simple buckling criterion, or using an uncoupled approach by chaining strip rolling model calculation with shell element models presenting good buckling computing capabilities. Our objective is the improvement of the flat product rolling - specialized FEM software Lam3/Tec3 [1] using Counhaye simple buckling criterion [3] and Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) for shell element model [9, 10] respectively with coupled and uncouple approaches detailed in the present paper. These two approaches bring computed stress profiles to very good agreement with experiments and the most important result at this stage is the weak influence of buckling on in-bite stress and strain fields providing a more rigorous justification of the traditional decoupled methods [2,5-8].

International audience; Sufficiently smooth nonlinear PDE problems may be addressed through the higher order derivative com- putations of the so-called Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM). In this paper, we theoretically discuss the generic solution of nonlinear residual equations. We then propose a Matlab implementation of the ANM based on Automatic Differentiation which allows for significant improvements in genericity and ease of use. The Diamant toolbox we construct is applied to the study of the geometrical nonlinear behav- ior of a laminated glass beam. Numerical results and experimental performances demonstrate the efficiency of the Diamant tool.

The perturbation theory has proved to be an efficient tool for the numerical resolution of non-linear problems in mechanics. However, it is not suitable for singular problems, for which the series solution is divergent. We propose to use the Borel-Laplace series resummation method for the resolution of such a problem. The resulting algorithm is applied to some model problems in fluid mechanics, La théorie de perturbation est un outil efficace pour la résolution numérique de problèmes non-linéaires en mécanique. Toutefois, elle n'est pas adaptée à des problèmes singuliers, pour lesquels la solution sous forme de série formelle est divergente. Nous proposons d'utiliser numériquement la méthode de resommation de séries de Borel-Laplace pour la résolution d'un tel problème. L'algorithme résultant est appliqué à la résolution de problèmes modèles en mécanique des fluides.

International audience; Discreprencies observed in experimental buckling loads related to thin shells are mostly due to the random nature of the initial geometric imperfections. It is therefore necessary to consider this problem from a probabilistic point of view. This paper represents a contribution to this area and addresses the stability of cylindrical thin shells with random initial shape imperfections under an external given pressure. In order to solve this problem, a subset simulation method is applied based on numerical results obtained from a finite element model. This approach requires the choice of a stochastic model for representing the initial imperfections. A Fourier decomposition method has been used and the coefficients are considered as random variableswhose parameters are identified from experimental data.; Le caractère aléatoire des imperfections géométriques initiales est souvent à l'origine des fortes dispersions obtenues expérimentalement sur les charges de flambement des coques minces et il ainsi naturel de considérer ce problème mécanique sous l'angle probabiliste. Le travail présenté constitue une contribution en ce sens et aborde l'analyse de la stabilité des coques minces cylindriques sous pression externe avec imperfections géométriques initiales aléatoires. Le problème mécanique fait appel à une résolution numérique par éléments finis et la probabilité de défaillance de la coque sous une pression donnée est calculée à l'aide d'une méthode de simulation par subsets. Cette approche fiabiliste nécessite le choix d'un modèle stochastique pour la représentation du défaut. Pour ce faire, l'amplitude du défaut est décomposée en série de Fourier et les coefficients sont considérés comme variables aléatoires, les paramètres de ces variables étant identifiés à partir de données expérimentales.
