A century of research on small groups has yielded bountiful findings about many specific features and processes in groups. Much of that work, in line with a positivist epistemology that emphasizes control and precision and favors the laboratory experiment over other data collection strategies, has also tended to treat groups as though they were simple, isolated, static entities. Recent research trends that treat groups as complex, adaptive, dynamic systems open up new approaches to studying groups. In line with those trends, a theory of groups as complex systems is offered and some methodological and conceptual issues raised by this theory are identified. A 3-pronged research strategy based on theory development, computational modeling, and empirical research that holds promise for illuminating the dynamic processes underlying the emergence of complexity and the ongoing balance of continuity and change in groups is proposed.

The growing impact of regulations on the economy has led both Congress and the Administration to search for new ways of reforming the regulatory process. Many of these initiatives call for greater reliance on the use of economic analysis in the development and evaluation of regulations. One specific approach being advocated is benefit-cost analysis, an economic tool for comparing the desirable and undesirable impacts of proposed policies.

Cytochrome aa3 concentrations in the cytoplasmic membrane of Bacillus subtilis were altered by growth conditions, and the effects on the membrane potential (delta psi) in whole cells were measured. When cytochrome aa3 was absent, the magnitude of delta psi was not diminished by comparison with the delta psi measured in cells containing normal cytochrome aa3 concentrations. In addition, the energy-dependent uptake of proline and glutamate was comparable at both cytochrome aa3 concentrations. However, in the cytochrome aa3-deficient cell preparation, accumulation of the aminoglycoside antibiotic streptomycin was much lower than that of the cytochrome aa3-sufficient cells. When cells were cultured under conditions that stimulated higher than normal concentrations of cytochrome aa3, delta psi was also increased, and enhanced streptomycin accumulation was observed. Phenazine methosulfate-ascorbate was used both in delta psi measurements and in uptake studies to provide high rates of electron transport and maximal delta psi values. These results, taken together with those previously published (A. S. McEnroe and H. W. Taber, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 26:507-512, 1984) suggest that the uptake of streptomycin by B. subtilis requires adequate levels both of delta psi and cytochrome aa3.

Although there is no empirical evidence linking gun ownership with happiness, speculation is widespread. In this paper, we assess the association between gun ownership and happiness. We use 27 years of national cross-sectional data from the General Social Survey (1973–2018) and logistic regression to model self-rated happiness as a function of gun ownership (n = 37,960). In bivariate and partially adjusted models, we observed that the odds of being very happy were higherfor respondents who reported having a gun in their home. This association persisted with adjustments for age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, employment status, household income, financial satisfaction, financial change, number of children, religious attendance, political affiliation, urban residence, region of interview, and survey year. In our fully adjusted model, gun ownership was unrelatedto happiness. The original association between gun ownership and happiness was entirely confounded by marital status. In other words, gun owners only appeared happier because they are more likely to be married, which increases happiness. In the first study of gun ownership and happiness, we found that people who own guns and people who do not own guns tend to exhibit similarlevels of happiness. This general pattern was consistent across nearly three decades of national surveys, a wide range of subgroups, and different measures of happiness. Our analyses are important because they contribute to our understanding of the epidemiology of happiness. They also indirectly challenge theoretical perspectives and cultural narratives about how guns contribute to feelings of safety, power, and pleasure.

Americans can be divided into two groups: those who own guns and those who do not. Although people who own guns and people who do not own guns are often separated along social, cultural, and political lines, it is unclear whether these divisions might extend to population differences in emotional experience. In this paper, we use national cross-sectional data from the 2014 Chapman University Survey on American Fears (n = 1385) to test whether gun owners are more or less afraid than people who do not own guns. We build on previous work by testing two hypotheses with a broad range of fear-related outcomes, including specific phobias and fears associated with being victimized. The symptom perspectiveargues that gun ownership is a behavioral expression of fear, that gun owners need guns to protect themselves because they are irrational cowards. Although binary logistic regression models provided minimal support for this idea, there was some evidence to suggest that the odds of gun ownership are higherfor people who report being afraid of being victimized by a random/mass shooting. The palliative perspectiveclaims that gun ownership mitigates fear, that owning a powerful weapon is somehow soothing to individuals and their families. Ordinary least squares and negative binomial regression models suggest that people who own guns tend to report lower levels of phobias and victimization fears than people who do not own guns. This general pattern is observed across multiple indicators of fear (e.g., of animals, heights, zombies, and muggings), multiple outcome specifications (continuous and count), and with adjustments for age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, household income, marital status, the presence of children, religious identity, religiosity, religious attendance, political orientation, region of residence, and urban residence. Additional longitudinal research is needed to confirm our findings with a wider range of covariates and fear-related outcomes.

From print to new media, the papers assembled highlight the ingenuity of Australian historians working to recover the experiences of audiences in urban and regional settings.

The PremierTMClostridium difficiletoxin A enzyme immunoassay (EIA) kit was evaluated for the detection of C. difficileenterotoxin in fecal samples. A total of 314 samples was tested by culture, cytotoxin detection and EIA kit. Compared to a combined culture/cytotoxin result the PremierTMEIA kit had a sensitivity of 88.3%, a specificity of 100%, a predictive value positive of 100% and a predictive value negative of 87.4%. Test results were available within 3 hrs providing a rapid and reliable means of detecting C. difficileenterotoxin.

After working (mostly) as an academic historian for six years, in 2004 I became a historian-presenter on the recently axed ABC TV program Rewind, which presented historical stories in a magazine-style format. The program was created and received in the midst of a boom in history on television, but also at a time when history is being scrutinised and raked over in the public sphere as never before. In this paper I would like to consider the Rewindexperience in both of these contexts — is it possible to make history television that satisfies the demands of both television and history? What sort of Australian history did we present on Rewind, and, in the wake of the History Wars and the re-election of the Howard government, what sort of history might we see on our television screens in future?
