This study examined whether participation in leisure activities during early and middle adulthood was associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease. The sample consisted of 107 same-sex twin pairs discordant for dementia and for whom information on leisure activities was self-reported more than 20 years prior to clinical evaluation. A factor analysis of these activities yielded three activity factors: intellectual--cultural, self-improvement, and domestic activity. Matched-pair analyses compared activities within the discordant twin pairs while controlling for level of education. For the total sample, participation in a greater overall number of leisure activities was associated with lower risk of both Alzheimer's disease and dementia in general. Greater participation in intellectual-cultural activities was associated with lower risk of Alzheimer's disease for women, although not for men.

Background Years of Life Lost (YLLs) measure the shortfall in life expectancy due to a medical condition and have been used in multiple contexts. Previously it was estimated that there were 1.2 million YLLs associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) deaths in the USA through 11 July 2020. The aim of this study is to update YLL estimates for the first full year of the pandemic. Methods We employed data regarding COVID-19 deaths in the USA through 31 January 2021 by jurisdiction, gender and age group. We used actuarial life expectancy tables by gender and age to estimate YLLs. Results We estimated roughly 3.9 million YLLs due to COVID-19 deaths, which correspond to roughly 9.2 YLLs per death. We observed a large range across states in YLLs per 10 000 capita, with New York City at 298 and Vermont at 12. Nationally, the YLLs per 10 000 capita were greater for males than females (136.3 versus 102.3), but there was significant variation in the differences across states. Conclusions Our estimates provide further insight into the mortality effects of COVID-19. In response to the rising financial pressure on old-age pension systems in industrialised economies, many European countries plan to increase the eligibility age for retirement pensions. We used data from Sweden to examine whether (and if so, how) retirement after age 65 – the eligibility age for basic pension – compared to retiring earlier affects older adults' (between ages 70 and 85) cognitive functioning. Using a propensity score matching (PSM) approach, we addressed the selection bias potentially introduced by non-random selection into either early or late retirement. We also examined average and heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs). HTEs were evaluated for different levels of cognitive stimulation from occupational activities before retirement and from leisure activities after retirement. We drew from a rich longitudinal data-set linking two nationally representative Swedish surveys with a register data-set and found that, on average, individuals who retire after age 65 do not have a higher level of cognitive functioning than those who retire earlier. Similarly, we did not observe HTEs from occupational activities. With respect to leisure activities, we found no systematic effects on cognitive functioning among those working beyond age 65. We conclude that, in general, retirement age does not seem to affect cognitive functioning in old age. Yet, the rising retirement age may put substantial pressure on individuals who suffer from poor health at the end of their occupational career, potentially exacerbating social- and health-related inequalities among older people. Objectives The present study examines the associations between mental, social, and physical demands of work and cognitive functioning among older adults in the United States. Method Data from 3,176 respondents in the Health and Retirement Study were analyzed using growth curve modeling (2004–2014). The study investigated differences by gender, race, ethnicity, and education. Results Higher mental and social demands of work were associated with higher levels of initial cognitive functioning, but were not significantly associated with slower cognitive decline over time. Physical demands of work were negatively associated with initial cognitive functioning and were also marginally associated with a slower rate of decline in cognitive functioning going into older adulthood. In stratified analyses, results varied by sociodemographic characteristics. Discussion The results partially support the environmental complexity hypothesis and the productive aging framework in that higher mental and social demands and lower physical demands relate to better cognitive functioning at baseline, with the differences appearing stable throughout older adulthood. Study Objectives: Sleep is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular conditions. Holistic examination of within-person, multidimensional sleep patterns may offer more detailed information about the sleep-cardiovascular condition link, including who is more vulnerable to both. This study aimed to identify common sleep phenotypes in adulthood, establish the validity of the phenotypes in relation to cardiovascular conditions, and explore sociodemographic and background characteristics of the phenotypes. Methods: Across two independent samples of adults (N1 = 4600; N2 = 2598) from the Midlife in the United States Study, latent class analysis (LCA) extracted sleep phenotypes using five key self-reported sleep dimensions. Log-binomial regression was used to determine whether sleep phenotypes differentially predicted cardiovascular conditions, adjusting for known risk factors. LCA with covariates was used to compare sociodemographic characteristics of the identified sleep phenotypes. Results: Four sleep phenotypes were identified consistently across the two samples: good sleepers, nappers, dissatisfied/inefficient sleepers, and irregular sleepers. Compared to good sleepers (reference), dissatisfied/inefficient sleepers exhibited a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions in both samples (RRSample1: 29%, RRSample2: 53%) and consisted of relatively more racial/ethnic minorities. Nappers exhibited a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions in one sample (RRSample1: 38%) and consisted of more women and older adults. Irregular sleepers exhibited no significantly different cardiovascular risk and were relatively younger. Conclusions: Common sleep phenotypes in adulthood exhibit differential risks for cardiovascular conditions. Cooccurring sleep dissatisfaction and inefficiency, in particular, may relate to increased risk of cardiovascular conditions. This study examined an example of the potential for senior power in local politics. On March 2, 1999, a gated retirement community in Orange County, California, known as Leisure World, incorporated with three adjacent senior-living facilities and several businesses to form the first city in the nation--Laguna Woods--almost exclusively populated by seniors. An immediate threat to the community's lifestyle--the building of a nearby airport--set off city incorporation and allowed the residents to fight the airport more effectively. City-generated revenues are mostly dedicated to satisfy the needs of senior residents and finance age-relevant services such as building golf cart trails for nondrivers. This case suggests that, when crises arise, 'able seniors' may become influential political activists. Although the senior power model may not be robust on the federal or state levels, it may become more so on the local level.

This study tested for differential patterns of cognitive decline in 33 twin pairs for which both were nondemented, but 1 member of the pair went on to develop dementia. Compared with their nondemented twin partners, twins who later developed dementia already showed poorer performance on tests of memory and attention, visuospatial-reasoning skills, and perceptual speed and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The authors suggest that this cluster of tests reflects deficits in controlled rather than automatic cognitive processes. Nondemented twin partners of the twins who became demented were also compared with 33 matched controls selected from pairs in which both members remained nondemented. Nondemented twin partners scored lower than matched controls on tests of verbal ability, memory and attention, and perceptual speed and the MMSE. This finding indicates that nondemented twin partners of demented twins are at elevated risk themselves for becoming demented, and further suggests that certain areas of cognition are compromised prior to diagnosis of dementia.
