This study provides an update on the movement ecology of the Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) in three distinct ecoregions of Vietnam. Using radio telemetry, we tracked 12 pangolins rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and translocated to protected areas. We found that the average home range of translocated Sunda pangolins was 1.58 km2 and did not vary significantly between sexes, mass, or habitat. However, there was a marked decrease in range size with decreasing sizes of suitable forest space and terrain, or a localized abundance of resources in some locations. Pangolins were most active from 03:00 to 04:00. The study highlights the need for further research to fully understand the ecology of this unique and enigmatic species.

Background: Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a group of autosomal dominant disorders caused by mutations in one of five keratin genes (KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT6C, KRT16, or KRT17). PC is an extremely rare condition. To our knowledge, this is the largest genotype–phenotype study of PC in a Vietnamese population to date. Materials and methods: We investigated keratin gene mutations and clinical features of seven Vietnamese children with PC. Results: The seven Vietnamese patients were from six different families (two patients in the same family) from across Northern, Central, and Southern Vietnam. All children displayed PC symptoms before 1 year of age, but diagnosis was delayed in 4/7 patients. Thick fingernails, thick toenails, oral leukokeratosis, and follicular hyperkeratosis were the most common features recorded by all seven patients. Plantar keratoderma and thick fingernails were the clinical features associated with the most significant effect on daily function. All patients had mutations in KRT6A (PC–K6a) focused on the 1A and 2B domains. We found three distinct types of mutations (K6a R466P, K6a N171K, and K6a N172del). One mutation (N172del) was common to 5/7 (71.4%) of the patients. Conclusions: Individuals displaying nail dystrophy, oral leukokeratosis, follicular hyperkeratosis, and plantar keratoderma should be referred for genetic testing given the high likelihood of a PC-K6a-related mutation in patients with this constellation of clinical signs.

Background: In Vietnam, there is limited research on the role of nerve conduction in myasthenia gravis and its association with clinical features. Objective: This study aims to describe the electrophysiological features in patients with myasthenia gravis. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted from September 2019 to December 2021. The study included 33 myasthenia gravis patients who sought medical consultation or received inpatient treatment during this period. The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America classifies myasthenia gravis into five groups: I, IIa, IIb, IIIa, IIIb, IVa, IVb, and V. Notably, Group I involves pure ocular weakness, whereas Group a primarily impacts limb and axial muscles, and Group b mainly affects bulbar and respiratory muscles. Results: The study revealed that motor and sensory nerve conduction in the upper and lower limbs were within normal limits for the patient group under evaluation. Repetitive nerve stimulation testing at a frequency of 3 Hz showed positive results in 66.7% of myasthenia gravis patients. Myasthenia gravis patients displayed distinct clinical symptoms, with ptosis being the most common (87.9%). Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America classification indicated the highest proportion in subgroup IIa (24.2%), with myasthenia gravis predominating in limb and axial muscles (Group a) observed in 51.5% of cases. Needle electromyography showed no abnormalities in myasthenia gravis patients. There was an association between acetylcholine receptor antibody titers and the results of the 3 Hz repetitive nerve stimulation test in myasthenia gravis patients, with a significance of p = 0.002. Conclusion: Nerve conduction studies should be performed in patients with suspected neuromuscular disorders to aid in differential diagnosis and definitive diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.

Background: Sommeratia caseolaris is considered the most important mangrove species for reforestation and conservation programs. Therefore, the knowledge of genetic diversity and the population structure of the species has important implications both for the conservation of existing genetic resources and development programs. In the present study, the genetic diversity and structure population of eight populations of S. caseolaris from the Northern to the Southern Coast of Vietnam were determined using nine ISSR molecular markers. Results: Eight populations of the mangrove species Sonneratia caseolaris were sampled across the natural range in Vietnam to evaluate the genetic diversity of the species. Nine ISSR markers were used to analyse 30 individuals from each population. There were moderate to high levels of genetic diversity (I = 0.447; h = 0.300). PCoA analysis gave very similar results to UPGMA dendrogram construction with the eight populations clustered into three genetic groups which mostly aligned with geographical distances among them. AMOVA analysis results indicated that most (81 %) of the genetic variation was within populations. Conclusion: The current study also indicates the high level of genetic variation existing among and within the natural population of S. caseolaris in Vietnam. These results open new perspectives towards the conservation of the species' genetic resources and their future use in conservation and reforestation programs.

The incorporation of extracurricular activities (ECAs) that focus on the English language is of utmost importance in higher education as it serves to improve students' interpersonal abilities and proficiency in language. The objective of this study is to ascertain the primary variables that serve as deterrents to the active engagement of university students in these activities. The results highlight notable barriers, including limited time availability and individual issues such as diminished self-assurance in social engagements and restricted competency in the English language. The findings of this study have significant significance for individuals learning a new language and organizers of English language immersion programmes. The research provides valuable insights into the creation of immersive environments that effectively facilitate language acquisition, experiential learning, and enhanced social interactions among students.

Key Clinical Message Pretibial myxedema is a rare skin lesion in Grave's disease, which required topical glucocorticoid administration in long‐term treatment. The patient's lesion has shrunk and become flatter than before treatment. Abstract We present a case of biopsy‐verified pretibial myxedema in a 70‐year‐old male patient with diagnosed hyperthyroidism and no prior history of Graves' disease. Topical corticosteroid and antithyroid drug administration led to successful resolution of the skin lesions. This case emphasizes the importance of considering pretibial myxedema even in atypical presentations of Graves' disease and underscores the value of prompt treatment.

In this study, we have applied a stable downward continuation technique to magnetic anomalies from the global geomagnetic field model MAG2V3 to improve the resolution of magnetic data of the west central Arabian Shield, Saudi Arabia. Then, advanced interpretation methods such as the tilt angle of the horizontal gradient (TAHG), horizontal gradient of a modified tilt angle (HGSTDR), and enhanced horizontal gradient (EHGA) have been applied to downward continued magnetic dataset to highlight the main structural features in the region. The observed geologic structures from the magnetic analysis revealed NW-SE, NE-SW, and ENE-WSW orientations in the west central Arabian Shield. The depths of these structures were computed by the analytic signal (AS) technique and the obtained result shows depths varying from 1.2 to 9.2 km. This study provided a new map of the subsurface geological structures for a better understanding of the tectonic evolution of the west central Arabian Shield.

BackgroundNursing professional is one of the most stressful jobs, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. When caring for COVID-19 patients, nurses face challenging conditions and limited resources, as well as the fear of infecting themselves and their families, putting them at risk for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency, sources, and risk factors for occupational stress among clinical nurses caring for COVID-19 patients in a Vietnamese tertiary hospital.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted among all clinical nurses (184 nurses) at a tertiary hospital in Vietnam from March 15 to April 15, 2021. A questionnaire was used for collecting data. Data analysis was done by descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions. Risk factors were identified by adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval and P values less than 0.05.ResultsThe survey was completed by 89.7% (165/184) of clinical nurses. Most participants were female (85.5%) and ≤ 40 years old (97.6%). Overall, participants reported a medium stress level with an Extended Nursing Stress Scale (ENSS) mean score of 1.79 points, and 32.1% had occupational stress. Prevalence of occupational stress among participants caring for COVID-19 patients (34.0%) was not statistically significant difference with that among those who did not (29.4%). Nurses' occupational stress in emergency and intensive care units (50.0%) was substantially higher than that in the other departments (11.7%). The most stressors for participants were difficulties connected to inadequate emotional preparedness, patients and families, and death and dying, with subscale mean scores of 1.97, 1.88, and 1.88 points, respectively. In multivariate analysis, working at an emergency and intensive care unit (OR 4.97), usually or more frequently feeling heavy duty for patients (OR 3.17), and income decrease (OR 3.03) were risk factors associated with occupational stress.ConclusionOne-third of clinical nurses at a tertiary hospital experienced occupational stress, with highest rate occurred at emergency and intensive care units. Nurses' working conditions at emergency and intensive care units should be essentially addressed to improve nurses' occupational stress.

PurposeThe Sedlis criteria define risk factors for recurrence warranting post-hysterectomy radiation for early-stage cervical cancer; however, these factors were defined for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) at an estimated recurrence risk of ≥30%. Our study evaluates and compares risk factors for recurrence for cervical SCC compared with adenocarcinoma (AC) and develops histology-specific nomograms to estimate risk of recurrence and guide adjuvant treatment.MethodsWe performed an ancillary analysis of GOG 49, 92, and 141, and included stage I patients who were surgically managed and received no neoadjuvant/adjuvant therapy. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate independent risk factors for recurrence by histology and to generate prognostic histology-specific nomograms for 3-year recurrence risk.ResultsWe identified 715 patients with SCC and 105 with AC; 20% with SCC and 17% with AC recurred. For SCC, lymphvascular space invasion (LVSI: HR 1.58, CI 1.12-2.22), tumor size (TS ≥4 cm: HR 2.67, CI 1.67-4.29), and depth of invasion (DOI; middle 1/3, HR 4.31, CI 1.81-10.26; deep 1/3, HR 7.05, CI 2.99-16.64) were associated with recurrence. For AC, only TS ≥4 cm, was associated with recurrence (HR 4.69, CI 1.25-17.63). For both histologies, there was an interaction effect between TS and LVSI. For those with SCC, DOI was most associated with recurrence (16% risk); for AC, TS conferred a 15% risk with negative LVSI versus a 25% risk with positive LVSI.ConclusionsCurrent treatment standards are based on the Sedlis criteria, specifically derived from data on SCC. However, risk factors for recurrence differ for squamous cell and adenocarcinoma of the cervix. Histology-specific nomograms accurately and linearly represent risk of recurrence for both SCC and AC tumors and may provide a more contemporary and tailored tool for clinicians to base adjuvant treatment recommendations to their patients with cervical cancer.

Objectives: We conducted this study to describe whether mutations in the gene coding for the enzyme reverse transcriptase (RT) were related to drugs used in the treatment of hepatitis B in Vietnam. Methods: Patients receiving antiretroviral therapy with evidence of treatment failure were included in the study. The RT fragment was cloned using the polymerase chain reaction technique after being extracted from patients’ blood samples. The nucleotide sequences were analysed using Sanger method. The HBV drug resistance database contains mutations associated to resistance to existing HBV therapies. Medical records were accessed to collect information on patient parameters, such as treatment, viral load, biochemistry, and blood count. Results: Resistance mutations to lamivudine, telbivudine, and entecavir were found in the highest proportion (75–91.7%) of HBV samples from patients who had failed antiretroviral therapy. Only 20.8% of HBV strains had mutations exhibiting adefovir resistance, while none had mutations conferring tenofovir resistance. M204I/V, L180M, and L80I are frequent variants linked with resistance to lamivudine, telbivudine, and entecavir. In contrast, the A181L/T/V mutation was detected predominantly in tenofovir-resistant HBV strains. Following the drug resistance mutation test, patients achieved the greatest virological response after 24 weeks of therapy with tenofovir and entecavir at a daily dose of one tablet. Conclusion: Lamivudine, telbivudine, and entecavir were all highly resistant to the RT enzyme modifications in 24 treatment failure patients, with M204I/V, L180M, and L80I being the most prevalent mutations. Tenofovir resistance mutations have not been found in Vietnam.

Gastrointestinal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are a rare disease. Sigmoid-anorectal AVM has only been reported in a few cases. The condition is usually detected when patients have gastrointestinal bleeding complications. The diagnosis and treatment of colorectal AVMs are still challenging. This paper presents a case of an Asian 32-year-old female patient admitted to hospital because of lower gastrointestinal bleeding lasting 17 years. The patient was diagnosed with sigmoid-rectal arteriovenous malformation and failed with other medical treatments. The damaged gastrointestinal tract was removed by a laparoscopic low anterior resection. The results were positive after a three-month follow-up; the bleeding was resolved, and the anal sphincter function was intact. Laparoscopic low anterior resection is a safe, less invasive, and effective approach for managing patients with digestive tract bleeding due to extensive colorectal AVM and preservation of the anal sphincter.

Abstract Background A key decision in the treatment of atrial fibrillation is choosing between a rhythm control strategy or a rate control strategy as the main strategy. When choosing rate control, the optimal heart rate target is uncertain. The Danish Atrial Fibrillation trial is a randomized, multicenter, two-group, superiority trial comparing strict rate control versus lenient rate control in patients with either persistent or permanent atrial fibrillation at inclusion. To prevent bias arising from selective reporting and data-driven analyses, we developed a predefined description of the statistical analysis. Methods The primary outcome of this trial is the physical component score of the SF-36 questionnaire. A total of 350 participants will be enrolled based on a minimal important difference of 3 points on the physical component score of the SF-36 questionnaire, a standard deviation of 10 points, a statistical power of 80% (beta of 20%), and an acceptable risk of type I error of 5%. All secondary, exploratory, and echocardiographic outcomes will be hypothesis-generating. The analyses of all outcomes will be based on the intention-to-treat principle. As ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, approach the living standards of developed countries, their copper demand is set to rise. This study investigates Vietnam’s copper stock and flow from 1995 to 2050, employing dynamic material flow analysis and five socioeconomic pathway scenarios (SSPs). Based on this, the secondary copper reserves of Vietnam were assessed. The results showed that the domestic copper demand is expected to grow to 526–1062 kt, resulting in a rapid increase in scrap generation. In 2022, Vietnam’s secondary copper reserves stood at 2.2 Mt and are projected to reach 6.8–8.6 Mt by 2050 under the SSP2 scenario. This corresponds to 3.6–4.6 times the 1.8 Mt primary copper reserve of Vietnam. However, these primary and secondary reserves cannot meet the cumulated demand by 2050. On the other hand, a large amount of copper, 8.9 Mt to 10 Mt, will become difficult-to-recover resources, such as waste in landfill sites, dissipated materials, or mixed metal loss. To promote the sustainable use of copper in Vietnam, we recommend increased geological expedition and mining investment, and improved waste management systems related to secondary resources.

This first study investigated the presence of dioxins and furans in river sediments around a craft village in Vietnam, focusing on Secondary Steel Recycling. Sediment samples were collected from various locations along the riverbed near the Da Hoi Secondary Steel Recycling village in Bac Ninh province. The analysis was conducted using a HRGC/HRMS-DFS device, detecting a total of 17 dioxin/furan isomers in all samples, with an average total concentration of 288.86 ng/kg d.w. The concentrations of dioxin/furan congeners showed minimal variation among sediment samples, ranging from 253.9 to 344.2 ng/kg d.w. The predominant compounds in the dioxin group were OCDD, while in the furan group, they were 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF and OCDF. The chlorine content in the molecule appeared to be closely related to the concentration of dioxins and their percentage distribution. However, the levels of furan isomers did not vary significantly. The distribution of these compounds was not dependent on the flow direction, as they were mainly found in solid waste and are not water-soluble. Although the hepta and octa congeners had high concentrations, when converted to TEQ values, the tetra and penta groups (for dioxins) and the penta and hexa groups (for furans) contributed more to toxicity. Furthermore, the source of dioxins in sediments at Da Hoi does not only originate from steel recycling production activities but also from other combustion sites. The average total toxicity was 10.92 ng TEQ/kg d.w, ranging from 4.99 to 17.88 ng TEQ/kg d.w, which did not exceed the threshold specified in QCVN 43:2017/BTNMT, the National Technical Regulation on Sediment Quality. Nonetheless, these levels are still concerning. The presence of these toxic substances not only impacts aquatic organisms in the sampled water environment but also poses potential health risks to residents living nearby.

Pre-writing stage has been considered very significant as it enhances writing performance in that learners can have discussions with the teacher and/or their peers. They can also outline and organize their ideas individually to prepare themselves for writing. This study investigated the effects of using pictures and interactions in the pre-writing stage. A cross-intervention research design was implemented on two experimental groups exposed to either strategy. The data were collected from 8 tests on writing performance, 21 questionnaires and 6 case-study interviews. The findings showed that there was no big difference in the development and organization of ideas between the two groups' writing performances. In fact, the participants' writing performance depended on the assigned topics and required subskills. In detail, depicting was found to assist generating ideas, but outlining was found useful in helping organizing ideas. Regarding the participants' preferences, nearly half of the participants preferred outlining and slightly over one third preferred depicting. A small number liked both strategies equally. An implication from this study is that the choice of prewriting strategy should depend on the target skill: form (organization) or fluency (idea generation).

Introduction: External quality assessment is a crucial component in ensuring the quality of blood transfusion testing laboratories. Objectives: To develop a procedure for generating external quality assessment items for blood transfusion testing to evaluate participants' performance. Methods: Experimental research was conducted at Quality Control Center for Medical laboratory- University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Three items, including red blood cell, serum, and atypical antibody serum samples, were assessed for homogeneity and stability; 5 assessment areas, including ABO grouping, Rh grouping, compatible cross matches, Coombs test, and screening of atypical antibodies, were utilized to evaluate the performance of 38 participants in the 2020-2021 period. Results: Red blood cell and serum samples maintained quality for a specific period at controlled temperatures, while serum samples with atypical antibodies showed stability at different temperatures. The participants demonstrated high satisfactory performance in ABO grouping, Rh grouping, Coombs test, and screening for atypical antibodies. However, the most unsatisfactory performance was reported in crossmatching, with 15% of participants unsatisfactory results. Conclusion: The procedure of production of proficiency testing items has been successfully developed, and its application at the national level is suggested to improve the quality of blood transfusion laboratories.
