Introduction: Mental rotation (MR) tasks of body parts involve anatomically interconnected brain systems. The systems are implicated in sensorimotor information integration and activate cortical motor-related areas, corresponding to the execution of similar motor tasks. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of varying the angle in the hand MR task on cerebral activation of the motor-related areas. Methods: Twenty healthy right-handed participants were recruited. We investigated cerebral activation while each participant decided whether a hand-palm image, rotated by 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270°, was a right or left hand. Results and discussion: A significant negative correlation between the angle and brain activity was observed in the right and left supplementary motor area (SMA) and right posterior anterior cingulate gyrus. The SMA was inactivated with 180°- or 270°-rotated images in the regions of interest analysis. 180°- and 270°-rotated palms would be biomechanically difficult to position; thus, SMA deactivation may be closely associated with biomechanical constraints. This study provided novel findings regarding the neurophysiological mechanisms of motor imagery and may be useful in developing treatment plans using MR tasks during patient rehabilitation. Rubisco overexpression does not lead to substantial photosynthesis improvement. One of the possible causes is the over-accumulation of 3-phosphoglycerate in the Calvin–Benson cycle. We have previously suggested that glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and triosephosphate isomerase (TPI), involved in 3-phosphoglycerate metabolism, have control over the Calvin–Benson cycle metabolism and photosynthesis. In the present study, Rubisco, GADPH, and TPI were simultaneously overexpressed in rice plants through crossing to improve photosynthesis and its N use efficiency. The percentage of N allocated to Rubisco and GAPDH and TPI levels in the transgenic plant increased 1.1-, 4.9-, and 2.1-fold, respectively, compared to those in wild-type plants, showing overexpression of these enzymes. However, there were no marked increases in CO2 assimilation rates at different CO2 levels and capacities of Rubisco carboxylation, regeneration of Rubisco substrate, and triose phosphate use calculated using the CO2 assimilation rates in the transgenic plants. The ratios of these photosynthetic capacities to total leaf-N level tended to be slightly lower in the transgenic plants than those in the wild-type plants, implying a marginal decrease in photosynthetic N use efficiency. In the transgenic rice plants substantially overexpressing GAPDH and TPI, photosynthesis at elevated CO2 levels, which is assumed to be limited factors other than Rubisco, was only slightly improved. Therefore, it is suggested that simultaneous Rubisco, GAPDH, and TPI overexpression do not improve photosynthesis and its N use efficiency, as GAPDH and TPI overexpression do not improve the 3-phosphoglycerate metabolism sufficiently to alleviate its over-accumulation caused by Rubisco overexpression. Pacific Winter Water (PWW) with high dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is the key water mass in which subsurface acidification occurs in the western Arctic Ocean. To investigate and partition carbon sources added to PWW across the Chukchi shelf to the adjacent Canada Basin, we investigated the distributions of DIC and its stable isotope (δ13C‐DIC) with other hydrographic and biogeochemical parameters during the Mirai cruise in the late summer of 2021. Using a four‐end‐member mixing model, we deciphered the water masses and separated DIC changes induced by biological processes from those induced by conservative mixing. We demonstrated that DIC dynamics in PWW were mainly controlled by the biological decomposition of organic carbon (OC). A mass balance model analysis of DIC and δ13C‐DIC suggested that the apparent δ13C signature of the respired organic carbon (δ13COCx) within PWW was −22.2‰ ± 1.1‰ on the shelf and −25.6‰ ± 1.6‰ in the basin. Therefore, we concluded that marine‐origin OC was the dominant carbon source that was decomposed in the Chukchi shelf bottom water, while respired terrestrial‐origin carbon made a major contribution to DIC pool in the basin PWW. We proposed that terrestrial OC from the Chukchi and Beaufort coastal seas could be an important carbon source, which was associated with winter water formation on the shelves and influenced by Beaufort Gyre state shift and circulation changes. We synthesized ridaifen-B boron dipyrromethene (RID-B-BODIPY) using 2methyl-6-nitro benzoic anhydride (MNBA)-mediated dehydration condensation reaction between amino alkyl-tethered RID and BODIPY FL. Comparative experiments between dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and MNBA for their coupling reactions demonstrated that MNBA is an effective condensation reagent for amines and BODIPY FL. A cell staining study with RID-B-BODIPY showed intracellular localization of BODIPY FL fluorescence, attributed to the RID-B structure, indicating the successful development of a tool for analyzing intracellular molecular behavior efficiently. Objective: To identify generalism-related competencies that medical students in Japan should acquire in order to provide comprehensive care for patients. Methods: The team responsible for developing the new 'Generalism' section of the 2022 revision of the Model Core Curriculum for Medical Education in Japan (MCC) consisted of nine members from diverse medical backgrounds across Japan. We adopted pragmatism paradigm and analyzed to identify decision-making processes using a qualitative document analysis. Results: The competency list was presented as a four-tier structure. The first tier of generalism was defined as 'take a multi-systemic view of the patient's problems and consider the patient's psychosocial background in order to provide comprehensive, flexible medical care that responds to the needs of the patient and is not limited to one's own specialty, supporting the achievement of individual and societal well-being.' The second tier was framed in terms of 'perspectives' and constructed of four different domains: 'holistic,' 'community,' 'life,' and 'social.' Conclusion: We identified and defined the competencies required by medical students in Japan to provide comprehensive care for patients. By including these competencies in the MCC, undergraduate medical education will be better placed to respond to anticipated changes in the demand for medical care in Japan. Success factors in our guideline development process include facilitating a collaborative and iterative development process, ensuring that diverse perspectives are integrated, and using practical examples and feedback to refine competencies based on a pragmatic approach. An optical fiber scale sensor based on the detection principle of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was developed for the rapid, high-sensitivity, real-time evaluation of scale precipitation in geothermal fluids. The optical fiber SPR scale sensor was fabricated by depositing a gold thin film onto the surface of an optical fiber with an exposed core. The optimal gold film thickness of the sensor was determined to be 30 nm, which achieved a refractive index sensitivity of 2140 nm per refractive index unit. A field test was conducted using geothermal brine from the Obama Binary Geothermal Power Plant in Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture. A conventional optical fiber scale sensor and the SPR sensor were simultaneously assessed using raw and pH-adjusted brines. For the SPR sensor, a peak shift of 0.27 nm/min was observed at a response time of 1 min, whereas no change in transmittance was observed for the conventional sensor until 180 min. After the experiments, a scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis was conducted on the sensors, and the findings showed that the deposition of Mg-SiO2 scale did not significantly differ between the two sensors. This article analyzes how the structural factor of asymmetry affects China's relations with a small power. As the studies of Brantly Womack suggest, asymmetry theory is conducive to deepening the understanding of China's relations with smaller countries. We argue that an examination of China-Philippines relations from 2010 to 2020 indicates that Beijing has trouble managing its ties with Manila because of the asymmetry in the nature of the relations, which originates in the power and status gaps between them. The asymmetrical structure of this bilateral interplay inclines China to underestimate and neglect the Philippines' intentions and determination to resist, which has been made especially clear in the South China Sea disputes. As a result, their relationship experienced repeated ups and downs throughout the 2010s, in particular over the maritime sovereignty issue. This study also hints at the complicated situations surrounding China where many medium-sized and small states attempt to maneuver among great powers.
