Abstract

We report the interplay between In incorporation and strain relaxation kinetics in high-In-content InxGa1-xN (x = 0.3) layers grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. For In mole fractions x = 0.13-0.48, best structural and morphological quality is obtained under In excess conditions, at In accumulation limit, and at a growth temperature where InGaN decomposition is active. Under such conditions, in situ and ex situ analysis of the evolution of the crystalline structure with the growth thickness points to an onset of misfit relaxation after the growth of 40 nm, and a gradual relaxation during more than 200 nm which results in an inhomogeneous strain distribution along the growth axis. This process is associated with a compositional pulling effect, i.e. indium incorporation is partially inhibited in presence of compressive strain, resulting in a compositional gradient with increasing In mole fraction towards the surface.

Abstract

Raman and Brillouin amplification of laser pulses in plasma have been shown to produce picosecond pulses of petawatt power. In previous studies, filamentation of the probe pulse has been identified as the biggest threat to the amplification process, especially for Brillouin amplification, which employs the highest plasma densities. Therefore it has been proposed to perform Brillouin scattering at densities below $n_{cr}/4$ to reduce the influence of filamentation. However, parastic Raman scattering can become a problem at such densities, contrary to densities above $n_{cr}/4$, where it is suppressed. In this paper, we investigate the influence of parasitic Raman scattering on Brillouin amplification at densities below $n_{cr}/4$. We expose the specific problems posed by both Raman backward and forward scattering, and how both types of scattering can be mitigated, leading to an increased performance of the Brillouin amplification process., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1311.2034

Abstract

This paper reports on the first post-mortem analyses of tiles removed from JET after the first campaigns with the ITER-like Wall (ILW) during 2011-2 [1]. Tiles from the divertor have been analysed by the Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) and Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) and by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) to determine the amount of beryllium deposition and deuterium retention in the tiles exposed to the scrape-off layer. Films 10-20 microns thick were present at the top of Tile 1, but only very thin films (<1 micron) were found in the shadowed areas and on other divertor tiles. The total amount of Be found in the divertor following the ILW campaign was a factor of ~9 less that the material deposited in the 2007-9 carbon campaign, after allowing for the longer operations in 2007-9., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

In this paper we explore the effectiveness of an artificial mini-magnetosphere as a potential radiation shelter for long term human space missions. Our study includes the differences that the plasma environment makes to the efficiency of the shielding from the high energy charged particle component of solar and cosmic rays, which radically alters the power requirements. The incoming electrostatic charges are shielded by fields supported by the self captured environmental plasma of the solar wind, potentially augmented with additional density. The artificial magnetic field generated on board acts as the means of confinement and control. Evidence for similar behaviour of electromagnetic fields and ionised particles in interplanetary space can be gained by the example of the enhanced shielding effectiveness of naturally occurring "mini-magnetospheres" on the moon. The shielding effect of surface magnetic fields of the order of ~100s nanoTesla is sufficient to provide effective shielding from solar proton bombardment that culminate in visible discolouration of the lunar regolith known as "lunar swirls". Supporting evidence comes from theory, laboratory experiments and computer simulations that have been obtained on this topic. The result of this work is, hopefully, to provide the tools for a more realistic estimation of the resources versus effectiveness and risk that spacecraft engineers need to work with in designing radiation protection for long-duration human space missions., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

160. Electron-scale shear instabilities: magnetic field generation and particle acceleration in astrophysical jets

Abstract

Strong shear flow regions found in astrophysical jets are shown to be important dissipation regions, where the shear flow kinetic energy is converted into electric and magnetic field energy via shear instabilities. The emergence of these self-consistent fields make shear flows significant sites for radiation emission and particle acceleration. We focus on electron-scale instabilities, namely the collisionless, unmagnetized Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) and a large-scale dc magnetic field generation mechanism on the electron scales. We show that these processes are important candidates to generate magnetic fields in the presence of strong velocity shears, which may naturally originate in energetic matter outburst of active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursters. We show that the KHI is robust to density jumps between shearing flows, thus operating in various scenarios with different density contrasts. Multidimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the KHI, performed with OSIRIS, reveal the emergence of a strong and large-scale dc magnetic field component, which is not captured by the standard linear fluid theory. This dc component arises from kinetic effects associated with the thermal expansion of electrons of one flow into the other across the shear layer, whilst ions remain unperturbed due to their inertia. The electron expansion forms dc current sheets, which induce a dc magnetic field. Our results indicate that most of the electromagnetic energy developed in the KHI is stored in the dc component, reaching values of equipartition on the order of $10^{-3}$ in the electron time-scale, and persists longer than the proton time-scale. Particle scattering/acceleration in the self generated fields of these shear flow instabilities is also analyzed.

A Salmonella é uma bactéria patogênica responsável por gastroenterites, sendo o principal agente de doenças de origem alimentar em várias partes do mundo, inclusive no Brasil. Visando inibir seu crescimento, pode-se utilizar conservantes como metabissulfito, bissulfito e benzoato de sódio, e o sorbato de potássio, que são amplamente empregados na preservação de alimentos. Estudos utilizando esses aditivos para inibição da Salmonella Typhimurium são escassos e, devido à sua importância para a segurança alimentar, objetivou-se determinar a Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) dos conservantes, a fim de fornecer mais informações sobre a resistência da bactéria. Nas condições do experimento, os conservantes metabissulfito e bissulfito de sódio apresentaram maior atividade antimicrobiana contra a S. Typhimurium, ambos com CIM de 1.250 μg.mL-1. Já os conservantes benzoato de sódio e sorbato de potássio necessitaram do dobro da quantidade para inibi-la, apresentando CIM de 2.500 μg.mL-1 e 2.300 μg.mL-1, respectivamente. Concentrações tão elevadas de conservantes se devem às condições do experimento, principalmente em relação ao pH do meio de cultura (pH ~ 7,3), já que estes conservantes são mais efetivos em condições ácidas.

Abstract

Hérnia perineal é descrita como o enfraquecimento muscular da região do períneo, podendo assim ocorrer a migração de vísceras para a região. Ocorre principalmente em cães, machos, não castrados e idosos. É pouco frequente em felinos. Um felino, fêmea, SRD, 7 anos, foi atendido na Clínica Animal’s, localizada no município de Teresina-PI, apresentado sinais compatíveis com hérnia perineal. O diagnóstico definitivo se deu através de exame radiográfico simples, sendo observadas alças intestinais como conteúdo herniário. O tratamento realizado foi a herniorrafia clássica, que se mostrou eficiente. Assim, esse trabalho objetivou relatar um caso de hérnia perineal bilateral em uma gata, descrevendo seus sinais, histórico clinico, método de diagnostico e tratamento empregado.

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the correlation between the residues, their anatomical location and the presence of laryngotracheal penetration and aspiration in patients after supracricoid laryngectomy undergoing cricohyoidoepiglotopexy reconstruction. Methods: This study included 70 patients treated by supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglotopexy reconstruction in a referral national cancer hospital. The patients were submitted to swallowing videofluoroscopy, and the findings were classified by the penetration and aspiration scale. The images were described observing the presence or absence of residues and their anatomical location. Results: The prevalence of penetration in this study was 68.6% and aspiration was 34.3%. An association was found between the presence of residue on the tongue (p=0.005), posterior pharyngeal wall (p=0.013), pyriform recesses (p=0.002), valecula (p=0.061), and laryngeal penetration. The residue in the upper esophageal sphincter (p=0.039) was associated with the occurrence of laryngotracheal aspiration. Conclusion: Patients undergoing supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohioidoepiglotopexy reconstruction have food residues in different anatomical regions after swallowing. Penetration was associated with the presence of residues on the base of the tongue and posterior pharyngeal wall. Aspiration was associated with the presence of residues in the upper esophageal sphincter.

Abstract

This study addresses the uncertainty evaluation of the flow rate measured through the use of Parshall flumes, describing the measurement principle, method and related mathematical models and uncertainty sources. Based on experimental data obtained from an open channel in a waste water facility, the flow rate measurement uncertainty was calculated using a Monte Carlo Method. The performed numerical simulations were focused on three measurement approaches, namely, the use of fixed or variable model parameters and the correlation between them. The obtained results showed significant relative differences (up to 12%) within the studied cases.

Abstract

Experiments are undertaken both to test a hypothesis and, as is usually the case in metrology, to estimate the values of quantities. Experimental design is the process of planning the experiment in order to ensure that measurements gathered are of the right type and are of sufficient quality and quantity to achieve the aims of the experiment as efficiently as possible. In this paper, we discuss the design of experiments for systems modelled in terms of Gaussian Processes that account for spatially (and/or temporally) correlated random effects. In particular, we look at how the number of measurements required depends on the degree of spatial/temporal correlation. These methods have been applied to determine the placement of a network of sensors on a thermal plate in order to determine the heat profile of the plate to sufficient accuracy with as few sensors as possible.

ABSTRACT Objective: To understand the repercussions of COVID-19 on the path of pregnancy. Method: Qualitative, participatory action research (PAR) study, based on Paulo Freire's Research Itinerary. A virtual culture circle was held in October 2020, with the participation of 12 pregnant women, living in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. Results: In the virtual culture circle, pregnant women talked and critically reflected on two generating themes: flowers and thorns in the course of pregnancy. They meant living in the virtual culture circle as spaces for sharing experiences, welcoming and learning, among others. Conclusions: For the participants, pregnancy during the pandemic brought difficulties such as social isolation, absence from work and the university, fears, anxieties, loneliness and insecurities. However, it also improved health care, intensifying self-care and investment in family relationships.

Abstract

O aparecimento de fissuras nos arcos da Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Amparo, Teresina-PI, tornou-se motivo de preocupação no ano de 2019. Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a situação estrutural do edifício, explicar as causas das manifestações patológicas e descrever a proposta de recuperação estrutural executada. Através de vistorias, relatório fotográfico, monitoramento das fissuras e revisão bibliográfica, verificou-se que a causa principal dos problemas foi recalque diferencial nas fundações, devido à percolação de grande volume de água. O aparecimento de fissuras consideráveis nos arcos rígidos corroborou para este parecer, indicando que a situação de equilíbrio inicial foi desfeita por uma perturbação exterior. Elaborou-se projeto e metodologia de execução de recuperação estrutural com telas eletrossoldadas e argamassa tixotrópica. Findado o período de monitoramento e eliminados os agentes causadores, os arcos, óculos e alvenarias foram reparados e, além de corrigidas as anomalias, tornaram-se mais resistentes à flexão e a eventuais deformações de mesma natureza.

Abstract

The generation of DC magnetic fields in unmagnetized plasmas with velocity shear is predicted for non relativistic and relativistic scenarios either due to thermal effects or due to the onset of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). A kinetic model describes the growth and the saturation of the DC field. The predictions of the theory are confirmed by multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations, demonstrating the formation of long lived magnetic fields ($t \sim 100s \omega_{pi}^{-1}$) along the full longitudinal extent of the shear layer, with transverse width on the electron length scale ($\sqrt{\gamma_0}c/\omega_{pe}$), reaching magnitudes $eB_{\mathrm{DC}}/m_ec\omega_{pe}\sim \beta_0\sqrt{\gamma_0}$.

Abstract

Collisionless plasma instabilities are fundamental in magnetic field generation in astrophysical scenarios, but their role has been addressed in scenarios where velocity shear is absent. In this work we show that velocity shears must be considered when studying realistic astrophysical scenarios, since these trigger the collisionless Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). We present the first self-consistent three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the KHI in conditions relevant for unmagnetized relativistic outflows with velocity shear, such as active galactic nuclei (AGN) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We show the generation of a strong large-scale DC magnetic field, which extends over the entire shear-surface, reaching thicknesses of a few tens of electron skin depths, and persisting on time-scales much longer than the electron time scale. This DC magnetic field is not captured by MHD models since it arises from intrinsically kinetic effects. Our results indicate that the KHI can generate intense magnetic fields yielding equipartition values up to \epsilon_B/\epsilon_p ~ 10^-3 in the electron time-scale. The KHI-induced magnetic fields have a characteristic structure that will lead to a distinct radiation signature, and can seed the turbulent dynamo amplification process. The dynamics of the KHI are relevant for non-thermal radiation modeling and can also have a strong impact on the formation of relativistic shocks in presence of velocity shears.

Abstract

Dimensional measurements are fundamental in microfluidic device manufacturing and performance. The main focus of this study is the measurement of the connection port sizes in microfluidic devices and components and, accordingly, the possible existence of fluid leaks determined using the flow rate error. The sizes associated with three different microfluidic systems were determined using laser interferometry and through an optical measuring instrument, with metrological traceability to national length standards. It was possible to infer the method with the greatest accuracy and lowest measurement uncertainty for characterizing this kind of system. In conclusion, the results of this work directly address the current lack of dimensions measuring methods of microfluidic components by providing a comprehensive comparison of different protocols, ultimately suggesting a preferred option for immediate application within the microfluidic industry. Abstract

For over 150 years, researchers have studied the (patho)physiology of the endocrine pancreas and devised treatment options for diabetes mellitus (DM). However, no cure has been developed so far. In dogs, diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM) is the most common presentation. Treatment consists of twice daily insulin injections, monitored by spatial blood glucose measurements. Even though dogs were instrumental in the discovery of insulin and islet transplantations, the treatment in diabetic dogs has remained unchanged for decades. Providing twice daily insulin injections is demanding for both owners and dogs and may result in hypoglycaemic events, creating the need for new treatment strategies. Novel regenerative medicine-based tools, such as improved β-cell culture protocols and artificial devices, have sparked hope for a cure. In human medicine, emerging technologies such as the transplantation of insulin-producing β-cells, generated by stem cell differentiation, with or without an encapsulation device, are currently tested in phase I/II clinical trials. As the pathogenesis of T1DM is remarkably similar between humans and dogs, novel treatment methods could be implemented in canine medicine. This review briefly summarises the physiology of the canine endocrine pancreas and the pathophysiology of canine DM before exploring current and possible future treatment options for canine DM. A Raman study of a back gated bilayer graphene sample is presented. The changes in the Fermi level induced by charge transfer splits the Raman G-band, hardening its higher component and softening the lower one. These two components are associated with the symmetric (S) and anti-symmetric vibration (AS) of the atoms in the two layers, the later one becoming Raman active due to inversion symmetry breaking.
