Abstract

The COllaborative project of Development of Anthropometrical measures in Twins (CODATwins) project is a large international collaborative effort to analyze individual-level phenotype data from twins in multiple cohorts from different environments. The main objective is to study factors that modify genetic and environmental variation of height, body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) and size at birth, and additionally to address other research questions such as long-term consequences of birth size. The project started in 2013 and is open to all twin projects in the world having height and weight measures on twins with information on zygosity. Thus far, 54 twin projects from 24 countries have provided individual-level data. The CODATwins database includes 489,981 twin individuals (228,635 complete twin pairs). Since many twin cohorts have collected longitudinal data, there is a total of 1,049,785 height and weight observations. For many cohorts, we also have information on birth weight and length, own smoking behavior and own or parental education. We found that the heritability estimates of height and BMI systematically changed from infancy to old age. Remarkably, only minor differences in the heritability estimates were found across cultural-geographic regions, measurement time and birth cohort for height and BMI. In addition to genetic epidemiological studies, we looked at associations of height and BMI with education, birth weight and smoking status. Within-family analyses examined differences within same-sex and opposite-sex dizygotic twins in birth size and later development. The CODATwins project demonstrates the feasibility and value of international collaboration to address gene-by-exposure interactions that require large sample sizes and address the effects of different exposures across time, geographical regions and socioeconomic status.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze how parental education modifies the genetic and environmental variances of BMI from infancy to old age in three geographic-cultural regions. METHODS: A pooled sample of 29 cohorts including 143,499 twin individuals with information on parental education and BMI from age 1 to 79 years (299,201 BMI measures) was analyzed by genetic twin modeling. RESULTS: Until 4 years of age, parental education was not consistently associated with BMI. Thereafter, higher parental education level was associated with lower BMI in males and females. Total and additive genetic variances of BMI were smaller in the offspring of highly educated parents than in those whose parents had low education levels. Especially in North American and Australian children, environmental factors shared by co-twins also contributed to the higher BMI variation in the low education level category. In Europe and East Asia, the associations of parental education with mean BMI and BMI variance were weaker than in North America and Australia. CONCLUSIONS: Lower parental education level is associated with higher mean BMI and larger genetic variance of BMI after early childhood, especially in the obesogenic macro-environment. The interplay among genetic predisposition, childhood social environment, and macro-social context is important for socioeconomic differences in BMI.

Abstract

Broadband magnetization response of equilateral triangular 1000 nm Permalloy dots has been studied under an in-plane magnetic field, applied parallel (buckle state), and perpendicular (Y state) to the triangles base. Micromagnetic simulations identify edge spin waves (E-SWs) in the buckle state as SWs propagating along the two adjacent edges. These quasi one-dimensional spin waves emitted by the vertex magnetic charges gradually transform from propagating to standing due to interference and are weakly affected by dipolar interdot interaction and variation of the aspect ratio. Spin waves in the Y state have a two dimensional character. These findings open perspectives for implementation of the E-SWs in magnonic crystals and thin films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background Smokers tend to weigh less than never smokers, while successful quitting leads to an increase in body weight. Because smokers and non-smokers may differ in genetic and environmental family background, we analysed data from twin pairs in which the co-twins differed by their smoking behaviour to evaluate if the association between smoking and body mass index (BMI) remains after controlling for family background. Methods and findings The international CODATwins database includes information on smoking and BMI measured between 1960 and 2012 from 156,593 twin individuals 18–69 years of age. Individual-based data (230,378 measurements) and data of smoking discordant twin pairs (altogether 30,014 pairwise measurements, 36% from monozygotic [MZ] pairs) were analysed with linear fixed-effects regression models by 10-year periods. In MZ pairs, the smoking co-twin had, on average, 0.57 kg/m2 lower BMI in men (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.49, 0.70) and 0.65 kg/m2 lower BMI in women (95% CI: 0.52, 0.79) than the never smoking co-twin. Former smokers had 0.70 kg/m2 higher BMI among men (95% CI: 0.63, 0.78) and 0.62 kg/ m2 higher BMI among women (95% CI: 0.51, 0.73) than their currently smoking MZ co-twins. Little difference in BMI was observed when comparing former smoking co-twins with their never smoking MZ co-twins (0.13 kg/m2, 95% CI 0.04, 0.23 among men; -0.04 kg/m2, 95% CI -0.16, 0.09 among women). The associations were similar within dizygotic pairs and when analysing twins as individuals. The observed series of cross-sectional associations were independent of sex, age, and measurement decade. Conclusions Smoking is associated with lower BMI and smoking cessation with higher BMI. However, the net effect of smoking and subsequent cessation on weight development appears to be minimal, i.e. never more than an average of 0.7 kg/m2

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Smokers tend to weigh less than never smokers, while successful quitting leads to an increase in body weight. Because smokers and non-smokers may differ in genetic and environmental family background, we analysed data from twin pairs in which the co-twins differed by their smoking behaviour to evaluate if the association between smoking and body mass index (BMI) remains after controlling for family background. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The international CODATwins database includes information on smoking and BMI measured between 1960 and 2012 from 156,593 twin individuals 18-69 years of age. Individual-based data (230,378 measurements) and data of smoking discordant twin pairs (altogether 30,014 pairwise measurements, 36% from monozygotic [MZ] pairs) were analysed with linear fixed-effects regression models by 10-year periods. In MZ pairs, the smoking co-twin had, on average, 0.57 kg/m2 lower BMI in men (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.49, 0.70) and 0.65 kg/m2 lower BMI in women (95% CI: 0.52, 0.79) than the never smoking co-twin. Former smokers had 0.70 kg/m2 higher BMI among men (95% CI: 0.63, 0.78) and 0.62 kg/m2 higher BMI among women (95% CI: 0.51, 0.73) than their currently smoking MZ co-twins. Little difference in BMI was observed when comparing former smoking co-twins with their never smoking MZ co-twins (0.13 kg/m2, 95% CI 0.04, 0.23 among men; -0.04 kg/m2, 95% CI -0.16, 0.09 among women). The associations were similar within dizygotic pairs and when analysing twins as individuals. The observed series of cross-sectional associations were independent of sex, age, and measurement decade. CONCLUSIONS: Smoking is associated with lower BMI and smoking cessation with higher BMI. However, the net effect of smoking and subsequent cessation on weight development appears to be minimal, i.e. never more than an average of 0.7 kg/m2.

© SGEM 2017. All Rights Reserved. The current hard-to-recover oil reserves in Russia stand for more than 60% of total recoverable oil resources. These kind of reservoirs with acceptable technical and economic indicators are extracted only by applying physicochemical recovery techniques. Thus, an important relevance is given to selection of most effective EOR technology, which is directed to decrease the residual oil saturation in rock formations. Various chemical reagents including composites based on water-soluble polymers are injected both in Russia and worldwide in order to maintain reservoir pressure and to increase the oil recovery factor. The water-soluble polymers decrease the mobility difference between displacing and displaced fluids, reducing fingering effects. At the result of late water breakthrough oil recovery increases. It is highly important to introduce the model of rock matrices in order to combine the known phenomenon of natural chromatographic separation in reservoir rocks, which is characterized by heterogeneity of permeable rocks. Accordingly, heavy crude oil are located in large pores, as well as in small pores concentrated hydrocarbons. Therefore, the amount of hydrocarbon content describes the hydrophobic parameters. In this study, we combined the composite polymers with polydisperse rocks like calcite and dolomite. The different experimental results gained from using various types of rock, which is due to pore morphology and molecular interactions of polymers with rock surfaces. New laboratory results of processes, which are carried on interphase of a system: fluid reservoir - mineral matrix, are discussed..

Extra-heavy oil is considered as one of alternative energy sources mainly because of reserve potentials, rich in organic compounds and rare transition metals like V and Ni. Extraction from this hydrocarbon resource has always been a challenge due to high oil viscosity and as a result low mobility within porous media. Conventionally the production from extra-heavy oil reservoirs is achieved by thermal methods such as SAGD, CSS, Insitu combustion, etc. However, these techniques do not consider the post productions’ physical and chemical crude oil properties particularly its refinery values. Moreover, these methods are mainly restricted with onshore fields where there is enough working area exists. In addition, application of thermal methods are not reasonable for shallow and thin reservoirs primarily due to inoculation issues. This research study aims to introduce an alternative approach to thermal methods. In this approach, an ultrasound wave technology is used to enhance physico-chemical properties of extra-heavy oil. To examine the effectiveness of proposed technique a fluid sample from “Ashalcha” field is used. Initially, ultrasonic wave parameters like frequency, amplitude and wave generation time are optimized. The determined optimum wave parameters are then utilized to investigate the change in physico-chemical properties of fluid sample after ultrasound treatment. The results of study show that application of ultrasonic wave technology is able to reduce viscosity and improve the refinery values of extra-heavy oil from “Achalcha” field.

Abstract

The main problem of high-viscosity oil is the low profitability of their involvement in the development. One of the promising ways to solve the problem is to find new technologies and approaches to improve the productivity of wells and oil recovery factor. For tertiary oil recovery techniques are widely used polymer and surface-active compounds that provide a controlled increase in the viscosity of formation water and extraction residual oil. The study of intermolecular interactions in the oil reservoir should be carried out, taking into account the general properties of the reservoir rock. As a result of studies have shown differences in calcite and dolomite parameters associated with different pore morphology and the interaction of polymer molecules with a porous surface. New data on the processes occurring at the interface in the system of formation fluids - mineral. Results of the study of the surface properties and rheologica! behavior of various mineral reservoir rock components, selected as model, allow us to establish the effectiveness of the various polymers in the technology of polymer flooding. The principles upon which the method further reagents for assessing the effectiveness of polymer flooding is proposed which takes into account the complex phenomena which take place in the surface layer of the formation fluid in contact with the reservoir rock.

Abstract

The characteristic gamma radiation from the interaction of 14.1 MeV neutrons with a natural silicon sample is investigated with Tagged Neutron Method (TNM). The anisotropy of gamma-ray emission of 1.779 MeV was measured at 11 azimuth angles with a step of <15°. The present results are in good agreement with some recent experimental data. Abstract

The results obtained by measuring the angular and energy distributions of gamma rays produced in reactions induced by the inelastic scattering of 14.1-MeV neutrons on 27Al nuclei are presented. The respective measurements were performed by the tagged-neutron method in a beam from the ING-27 compact neutron generator. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The comparison of traits in twins from opposite-sex (OS) and same-sex (SS) dizygotic twin pairs is considered a proxy measure of prenatal hormone exposure. To examine possible prenatal hormonal influences on anthropometric traits, we compared mean height, body mass index (BMI), and the prevalence of being overweight or obese between men and women from OS and SS dizygotic twin pairs. METHODS: The data were derived from the COllaborative project of Development of Anthropometrical measures in Twins (CODATwins) database, and included 68,494 SS and 53,808 OS dizygotic twin individuals above the age of 20 years from 31 twin cohorts representing 19 countries. Zygosity was determined by questionnaires or DNA genotyping depending on the study. Multiple regression and logistic regression models adjusted for cohort, age, and birth year with the twin type as a predictor were carried out to compare height and BMI in twins from OS pairs with those from SS pairs and to calculate the adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for being overweight or obese. RESULTS: OS females were, on average, 0.31 cm (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.20, 0.41) taller than SS females. OS males were also, on average, taller than SS males, but this difference was only 0.14 cm (95% CI 0.02, 0.27). Mean BMI and the prevalence of overweight or obesity did not differ between males and females from SS and OS twin pairs. The statistically significant differences between OS and SS twins for height were small and appeared to reflect our large sample size rather than meaningful differences of public health relevance. CONCLUSIONS: We found no evidence to support the hypothesis that prenatal hormonal exposure or postnatal socialization (i.e., having grown up with a twin of the opposite sex) has a major impact on height and BMI in adulthood.

Abstract

Background: Genes and the environment contribute to variation in adult body mass index [BMI (in kg/m2)], but factors modifying these variance components are poorly understood. Objective: We analyzed genetic and environmental variation in BMI between men and women from young adulthood to old age from the 1940s to the 2000s and between cultural-geographic regions representing high (North America and Australia), moderate (Europe), and low (East Asia) prevalence of obesity. Design: We used genetic structural equation modeling to analyze BMI in twins ≥20 y of age from 40 cohorts representing 20 countries (140,379 complete twin pairs). Results: The heritability of BMI decreased from 0.77 (95% CI: 0.77, 0.78) and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.74, 0.75) in men and women 20-29 y of age to 0.57 (95% CI: 0.54, 0.60) and 0.59 (95% CI: 0.53, 0.65) in men 70-79 y of age and women 80 y of age, respectively. The relative influence of unique environmental factors correspondingly increased. Differences in the sets of genes affecting BMI in men and women increased from 20-29 to 60-69 y of age. Mean BMI and variances in BMI increased from the 1940s to the 2000s and were greatest in North America and Australia, followed by Europe and East Asia. However, heritability estimates were largely similar over measurement years and between regions. There was no evidence of environmental factors shared by co-twins affecting BMI. Conclusions: The heritability of BMI decreased and differences in the sets of genes affecting BMI in men and women increased from young adulthood to old age. The heritability of BMI was largely similar between cultural-geographic regions and measurement years, despite large differences in mean BMI and variances in BMI. Our results show a strong influence of genetic factors on BMI, especially in early adulthood, regardless of the obesity level in the population.

Abstract

We analyze shot noise in a magnetic tunnel junction with a two-level quantum dot attached to the magnetic electrodes. The considerations are limited to the case when some transport channels are suppressed at low temperatures. Coupling of the two dot's levels to the electrodes are assumed to be generally different and also spin dependent. To calculate the shot noise we apply the approach based on the full counting statistics. The approach is used to account for experimental data obtained in magnetic tunnel junctions with organic barriers. The experimentally observed Fano factors correspond to the super-Poissonian statistics, and also depend on relative orientation of the electrodes' magnetic moments. We have also calculated the corresponding spin shot noise, which is associated with fluctuations of spin current.

Abstract

© Research India Publications. Water coning is a term used to describe the upward movement of water into the perforations of a producing well. This phenomenon can also be described as a steady and usually sharp displacement of some or all the oil production by the bottom water when the critical withdrawal rate from the well is exceeded. Water coning may lead to several serious problems. There may be loss in total recovery. Water coning is a usual problem that is faced by petroleum engineers in reservoirs having an aquifer, particularly at the bottom. The critical rate is the subject discussed mostly in the studies on water coning. This paper presents a simulation study using RUBIS, a subprogram of ECRIN. Some correlations for critical rate are analyzed and their results are compared with those from RUBIS. For reasonable comparison, parameters in the simulation program are set so that the assumptions used in correlations could be met.

Abstract

Human height variation is determined by genetic and environmental factors, but it remains unclear whether their influences differ across birth-year cohorts. We conducted an individual-based pooled analysis of 40 twin cohorts including 143,390 complete twin pairs born 1886-1994. Although genetic variance showed a generally increasing trend across the birth-year cohorts, heritability estimates (0.69-0.84 in men and 0.53-0.78 in women) did not present any clear pattern of secular changes. Comparing geographic-cultural regions (Europe, North America and Australia, and East Asia), total height variance was greatest in North America and Australia and lowest in East Asia, but no clear pattern in the heritability estimates across the birth-year cohorts emerged. Our findings do not support the hypothesis that heritability of height is lower in populations with low living standards than in affluent populations, nor that heritability of height will increase within a population as living standards improve.

Abstract

Height variation is known to be determined by both genetic and environmental factors, but a systematic description of how their influences differ by sex, age and global regions is lacking. We conducted an individual-based pooled analysis of 45 twin cohorts from 20 countries, including 180,520 paired measurements at ages 1-19 years. The proportion of height variation explained by shared environmental factors was greatest in early childhood, but these effects remained present until early adulthood. Accordingly, the relative genetic contribution increased with age and was greatest in adolescence (up to 0.83 in boys and 0.76 in girls). Comparing geographic-cultural regions (Europe, North-America and Australia, and East-Asia), genetic variance was greatest in North-America and Australia and lowest in East-Asia, but the relative proportion of genetic variation was roughly similar across these regions. Our findings provide further insights into height variation during childhood and adolescence in populations representing different ethnicities and exposed to different environments.

Abstract

In the paper the economic-mathematical model of income maximization using the fuzzy logic is considered for e-trade. The price of the product and other parameters in constraints are considered as the fuzzy parameter and on this basis the fuzzy model of e-shop income maximization is constructed. On the basis of this model the maximization of the income is reduced to the corresponding linear programming problem. To solve this problem the basic idea is to divide the fuzzy numbers on the α-cuts with the definite step. Finally, to illustrate our method, we solve a numerical example for e-shop. Abstract

Developments in titanium nickelide compression devices for forming interintestinal junctions in colorectal surgery are analyzed. Preference in developments has been given to compression devices made of titanium nickelide wire materials. The authors linked the main advantages with simplicity of use, small size, high levels of biological and physical sealing, and better conditions for tissue regeneration. Questions related to the means of establishing the primary patency of compression anastomoses and optimizing anastomosis techniques remain unanswered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
