Abstract

We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays B d,s 0 → μ+μ-, B+ → μ+μ-K+ and B0 → μ+μ-K*0 using data from pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV, collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-1993 running period. We find no indication of such decays, and we set the following 90% confidence level upper limits on branching ratios: B(B0 → μ+μ-) < 1.6 × 10-6, B(BS 0 → μ+μ-) < 8.4 × 10-6, B(B+ → μ+μ-K+) < 1.0 × 10-5, and B(B0 → μ+μ-K*0) < 2.5 × 10-5.

Abstract

We present the first general search for new heavy particles, X, which decay via X --> WZ0 --> e(nu)+jj as a function of M(X) and Gamma(X) in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. No evidence is found for production of X in 110 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. General cross section limits are set at the 95% C.L. as a function of mass and width of the new particle. The results are further interpreted as mass limits on the production of new heavy charged vector bosons which decay via W' --> WZ0 in an extended gauge model as a function of the width, Gamma(W'), and mixing factor between the W' and the standard model W bosons.

Abstract

We present results of the first search for like-sign dilepton ( e(+/-)e(+/-), e(+/-)mu(+/-), mu(+/-)mu(+/-)) events associated with multijets and large missing energy using 106 pb(-1) of data in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV collected during 1992-1995 by the CDF experiment. Finding no events that pass our selection, we examine pair production of gluinos (tilde g) and squarks (tilde q) in a constrained framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. At tan beta = 2 and mu = -800 GeV/c(2), we set 95% confidence level limits of M(tilde g)>221 GeV/c(2) for M(tilde g) approximately M(tilde q), and M(tilde q)>168 GeV/c(2) for M(tilde q)>>M(tilde g), both with small variation as a function of mu.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the cross section for production of two or more jets as a function of dijet mass, based on an integrated luminosity of 86 pb-1 collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Our dijet mass spectrum is described within errors by next-to-leading order QCD predictions using CTEQ4HJ parton distributions, and is in good agreement with a similar measurement from the DØ experiment. ©2000 the American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the cross section and the first measurement of the heavy flavor content of associated direct photon + muon events produced in hadronic collisions. These measurements come from a sample of 1.8 TeV pp̄ collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily due to the Compton scattering process cg→cγ, with the final-state charm quark producing a muon. The cross section for events with a photon transverse momentum between 12 and 40 GeV/c is measured to be 46.8±6.3±7.5 pb, which is two standard deviations below the most recent theoretical calculation. A significant fraction of the events in the sample contain a final-state bottom quark. The ratio of charm to bottom production is measured to be 2.4±1.2, in good agreement with QCD models. © 2001 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have searched for direct pair production of scalar top and scalar bottom quarks in 88 pb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV with the CDF detector. We looked for events with a pair of heavy flavor jets and missing energy, consistent with scalar top (bottom) quark decays to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutralino. The numbers of events that pass our selections show no significant deviation from standard model expectations. We compare our results to the next-to-leading order scalar quark production cross sections to exclude regions in scalar quark-neutralino mass parameter space.

Abstract

We present the first direct measurement of As, the parity-violating coupling of the Z0 boson to the strange quark, using ∼550 000 e+e- → Z0 → hadrons events recorded by the SLC Large Detector with a polarized e- beam. We tagged Z0 → ss̄ events by the absence of B or D hadrons and the presence in each hemisphere of a high momentum K± or Ks0. Fitting the polar angle distributions of the strangeness-signed thrust axis gave As = 0.895 ± 0.066(stat) ± 0.062(syst). The analyzing power and uū + dd̄ background were constrained using the data, greatly reducing any model dependence. © 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Top quark production offers the unique opportunity to search for a charged Higgs boson (H±), as the contribution from t→H+b→τ+νb can be large in extensions of the standard model. We use results from a search for top quark pair production by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in the eτ+Slashed E signT+jets and μτ+Slashed E signT+jets signatures to set an upper limit on the branching ratio of ℬ(t→H+b) in 106 pb-1 of data. The upper limit is in the range 0.5 to 0.6 at 95% C.L. for H+ masses in the range 60 to 160 GeV, assuming the branching ratio for H+→τν is 100%. The τ lepton is detected through its 1-prong and 3-prong hadronic decays. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

We present an improved measurement of b-meson lifetimes using fully reconstructed B-decays produced in pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV, using 114 pb-1 of data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We obtain τ(B+) = 1.636±0.058(stat)±0.025(syst) ps, τ(B0) = 1.497±0.073(stat)±0.032(syst) ps and for the lifetime ratio τ(B+)/τ(B0) = 1.093±0.066(stat)±0.028(syst).

Abstract

We present the results of a search in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV for anomalous production of events containing a photon and a lepton (e or mu), both with large transverse energy, using 86 pb(-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1994-1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. The presence of large missing transverse energy (E(T)), additional photons, or additional leptons in these events is also analyzed. The results are consistent with standard model expectations, with the possible exception of photon-lepton events with large E(T), for which the observed total is 16 events and the expected mean total is 7.6+/-0.7 events.

Abstract

The lifetime of the Bs 0 meson is measured using the exclusive decay mode Bs 0 → J / ψ φ, where J/ψ → μ+μ- and φ → K+K-. The data sample consists of 110 pb-1 of p p̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV, collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider during 1992-1995. We find 58 ± 12 signal events, and the Bs 0 meson lifetime is determined to be τBs0; = 1.34-0.19 +0.23(stat) ± 0.05(syst) ps. This result is consistent with previous measurements of the Bs 0, B+, and Bd 0 meson lifetimes and with theoretical predictions.

The search for narrow-width vector particles was undertaken using 106 pb-1 data from the collider detector at Fermilab. The cross section upper limits for narrow vector resonances decaying to tt are presented. The existence of leptophobic Z boson was not included in the top-color-assisted technicolor model at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract

We update the measurement of the tt̄ production cross section using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This measurement uses tt̄ decays to the final states e+v+jets and μ+v+jets. We search for b quarks from t decays via secondary-vertex identification or the identification of semileptonic decays of the b and cascade c quarks. The background to the tt̄ production is determined primarily through a Monte Carlo simulation. However, we calibrate the simulation and evaluate its uncertainty using several independent data samples. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c2, we measure σtt̄= 5.1±1.5 pb and (σtt̄=9.2±4.3 pb using the secondary vertex and the lepton tagging algorithms, respectively. Finally, we combine these results with those from other tt decay channels and obtain (σtt̄=6.5-1.4+1.7 pb.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the mean charged-particle multiplicity of jets in dijet events with dijet masses in the range 80-630 GeV/c(2), produced at the Tevatron in pp collisions with square root (s) = 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The data are fit to perturbative-QCD calculations carried out in the framework of the modified leading log approximation and the hypothesis of local parton-hadron duality. The fit yields values for two parameters in that framework: the ratio of parton multiplicities in gluon and quark jets, r identical withN(g-jet)(partons)/N(q-jet)(partons) = 1.7+/-0.3, and the ratio of the number of charged hadrons to the number of partons in a jet, K(charged)(LPHD) identical with N(charged)(hadrons)/N(partons) = 0.57+/-0.11.

Abstract

We present a study of events with W bosons and hadronic jets produced in p̄p collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 51400 W → e ν decay candidates from 108 pb-1 of integrated luminosity collected using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for W + ≥ 1 to ≥ 4 jet events. The data compare well to predictions of leading-order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated parton fragmentation.

Abstract

We report on a search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (top squark) produced in tt̄ events using 110 pb-1 of pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In the case of a light top squark, the decay of the top quark into a top squark plus the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) could have a significant branching ratio. The observed events are consistent with standard model tt̄ production and decay. Hence, we set limits on the branching ratio of the top quark decaying into a top squark plus LSP, excluding branching ratios above 45% for a LSP mass up to 40 GeV/c2.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for pair production of scalar top quarks (t(1)) in an R-parity violating supersymmetry scenario in 106 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In this mode each t(1) decays into a tau lepton and a b quark. We search for events with two tau's, one decaying leptonically (e or mu) and one decaying hadronically, and two jets. No candidate events pass our final selection criteria. We set a 95% confidence level lower limit on the t(1) mass at 122 GeV/c(2) for Br(t(1)-->tau b)=1.

Abstract

Based on a sample of approximately 500,000 hadronic Z0 decays accumulated between 1993 and 1998, the SLD experiment has set limits on 24 fully charged two-body and quasi two-body exclusive charmless hadronic decays of B+, B0, and B0_s mesons. The precise tracking capabilities of the SLD detector provided for the efficient reduction of combinatoric backgrounds, yielding the most precise available limits for ten of these modes., Comment: LaTex, 11 pages, 2 figures, uses RevTeX. Abstract

The first observation of diffractive J/ψ(→μ+μ-) production in p̄p collisions at s√=1.8 TeV was presented. Events were selected with a pair of muon candidates using a three-level dimuon trigger system. The dimuon mass distribution was fitted with a sum of a Gaussian and a linear function to evaluate the fraction of background events in the signal region. A value of 0.59±0.15 for the gluon fraction of the diffractive structure function of the proton was extracted.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the differential cross section dσ/dΣETjet for the production of multijet events in pp̄ collisions where the sum is over all jets with transverse energy ETjet > ETmin. The measured cross section for events with ΣETjet > 320 GeV is compared to (αs3) perturbative QCD predictions and QCD parton shower Monte Carlo predictions. The agreement between the (αs3) predicted and observed event rates is reasonable for ETmin = 100 GeV, but poorer for ETmin = 20 GeV.

Abstract

We have performed a search for radiative b-hadron decays using events produced in pp̄ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV and collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The decays we considered were B̄d0 →K̄*0(→K -π+)γ, B̄s0→φ (→K+K-)γ, Λb0→Λ(→pπ-)γ, and their charge conjugates. Two independent methods to identify photons from such decays were employed. In the first method, the photon was detected in the electromagnetic calorimeter. In the second method, the photon was identified by an electron-positron pair produced through the external photon conversion before the tracking detector volume. By combining the two methods we obtain upper limits on the branching fractions for the B̄d0, B̄s0, and Λb0 radiative decays which, at the 95% confidence level, are found to be B(B̄ d0→K̄*0γ)

Abstract

We present a detailed examination of the heavy flavor content of the W+jet data sample collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. Jets containing heavy flavor quarks are selected via the identification of secondary vertices or semileptonic decays of b and c quarks. There is generally good agreement between the rates of secondary vertices and soft leptons in the data and in the standard model simulation including single and pair production of top quarks. An exception is the number of events in which a single jet has both a soft lepton and a secondary vertex tag. In W+ 2,3 jet data, we find 13 such events where we expected 4.47plusmn;0.6 events. The kinematic properties of this small sample of events are statistically difficult to reconcile with the simulation of standard model processes. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays of the top quark t → qy and t → qZ (here q represents the c and u quarks) in pp collisions at √ s = 1.8 TeV. We use a dataset (∫ dt ∼ 110 pb-1) collected during the 1992-1995 run of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set 95% confidence level limits on the branching fractions B(t → qy) < 3.2% and B(t → qZ) < 33%, consistent with the standard model.

Abstract

We report a study of the decays B0 --> J/psiK(*)0pi(+)pi(-), which involve the creation of a uu or dd quark pair in addition to a b -->c(cs) decay. The data sample consists of 110 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider during 1992-1995. We measure the branching fractions to be B(B0 --> J/psiK(*0)pi(+)pi(-)) = (6.6 +/- 1.9 +/- 1.1)x10(-4) and B(B0 --> J/psiK0pi(+)pi(-)) = (10.3 +/- 3.3 +/- 1.5)x10(-4). Evidence is seen for contributions from psi(2S)K(*)0, J/psiK0rho(0), J/psiK(*+)pi(-), and J/psiK1(1270).
