Abstract

High rates of anxiety and depression exist among asthma patient populations. This scoping review will examine the existing interventional therapies that address depression and anxiety symptoms in patients with asthma. PubMed, Cochrane, Psychinfo, CINAHL, Google Scholar and EMBASE databases were searched using the following search terms: 'anxiety asthma', 'panic disorder asthma' and 'depression asthma' with a randomized clinical trial filter and additional filters to exclude exclusion criteria. Study selections included only randomized control trials with anxiety and/or depression and/or panic disorder outcomes as primary or secondary outcomes. Only full-text articles in the English language were included. This search yielded interventions from pharmacologic (n = 3), psychological (n = 7), lifestyle medicine (n = 10) and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM; n = 1) using a range of outcomes from physiologic to psychologic. While the pharmacologic and CAM studies were inconclusive, psychologic and lifestyle interventions showed improvements in asthma (quality of life, symptoms, asthma attacks) and psychological (anxiety, panic fear, depression) outcomes. Variations in selection methods, outcome measures and diagnostic criteria hindered a direct comparison of the studies. Most studies had small sample sizes, high attrition rates and short study durations. There is limited evidence on best approaches for managing co-morbid anxiety and/or depression in patients with asthma. Psychological and lifestyle medicine interventions are promising with improvements in both asthma and mental health outcomes. Well-designed randomized controlled studies with larger sample sizes, standardized outcomes and longer durations, are needed to better understand the role of depression and anxiety in adults with asthma. Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effects of the BAILAMOSTM dance program on physical activity (PA), cardiorespiratory, and cognitive health. Methods: A parallel, two-armed pilot study was conducted with 57 older Latinos randomized to the BAILAMOSTM dance program (n = 28) or health education (HE) (n = 29). We conducted two- and three-way repeated-measures ANOVAs. Results: BAILAMOSTM participants increased participation in leisure moderate-to-vigorous PA (LMVPA) (F [1,53] = 3.17, p =.048, η 2 G =.01) and performance in global cognition relative to HE participants (F [1,52] = 4.19, p =.045, η 2 G =.01). Attendance moderated increases in moderate PA, MVPA, LMVPA, and total PA (p <.05). Participants of both groups with ≥75% attendance increased participation in PA. Among participants with <75% attendance, BAILAMOSTM participants increased PA relative to HE. Discussion: BAILAMOSTM positively impacted self-reported PA and global cognition in older Latinos. Abstract

Telepsychiatry refers to the use of technology to support the remote provision of psychiatric services. Discussions of this technology have often focussed on the use of video conferencing in place of in-person visits and how such care is found to be non-inferior to traditional care. New developments in the fields of remote-sensing and digital phenotyping have the potential to overcome the limitations inherent in remote visits as well as the limitations of current outpatient care models more generally. Such technologies may enable the collection of more relevant, objective clinical data which could lead to improved care quality and transformed care delivery models. Abstract

Recently we developed a novel method for assessing the hierarchical modularity of functional brain networks - the probability associated community estimation(PACE). The PACE algorithm is unique in that it permits a dual formulation, thus yielding equivalent connectome modular structure regardless of whether considering positive or negative edges. This method was rigorously validated using F1000 and HCP data. We detected novel sex differences in resting-state connectivity that were not previously reported. This current study more thoroughly examined sex differences as a function of age and their clinical correlates, with findings supporting a basal configuration framework. To this end, we found that men and women do not significantly differ in the 22-25 age range. However, these same non-significant differences attained statistical significance in the 26-30 age group, while becoming highly statistically significant in the 31-35 age group. At the most global level, areas of diverging sex difference include parts of the prefrontal cortex and the temporal lobe, amygdala, hippocampus, inferior parietal lobule, posterior cingulate, and precuneus. Further, we identified statistically different self-reported summary scores of inattention, hyperactivity, and anxiety problems between men and women. These self-reports additionally divergently interact with age and the basal configuration between sexes. In sum, our study supports a paradigm change in how we conceptualize the functional connectome, shifting away from simple concepts, and towards thinking globally and probabilistically how the brain exhibits dynamic sex-specific connectivity configuration as a function of age, and the role this sex-by-age configuration at rest might play in mental health frequency and presentation, including symptom patterns in depression., 22 pages, 6 figures

198. Associations between pro-inflammatory cytokines, learning, and memory in late-life depression and healthy aging

Abstract

Objectives: Pro-inflammatory cytokines may play a role in learning and memory difficulties and may be exacerbated in late-life depression (LLD), where pro-inflammatory markers are alreadyelevated due to aging and age-related vascular risk. Methods: Learning and memory, and pro-inflammatory cytokines-Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured in 24 individuals with LLD and 34 healthy older adults (HOA). Hippocampal volumes were segmented using Freesurfer software. Results: Pro-inflammatory cytokines were higher in LLD compared to HOA. Regression analyses demonstrated that educational level and right hippocampal volume significantly contributed to explaining the variance in learning. For memory performance, educational level, right hippocampal volume and a group-by-IL-6 interaction significantly contributed to the model. Conclusions: High levels of IL-6 impact cognition in LLD but not HOA. Results suggest that high levels of inflammation alone are not sufficient to account for cognitive difficulties, but may interact with other factors in at-risk populations like LLD, to contribute to memory difficulties.
