This article presents a hardware architecture independent implementation of an adaptive mesh refinement Poisson solver that is integrated into the electrostatic Particle-In-Cell beam dynamics code OPAL. The Poisson solver is solely based on second generation Trilinos packages to ensure the desired hardware portability. Based on the massively parallel framework AMReX, formerly known as BoxLib, the new adaptive mesh refinement interface provides several refinement policies in order to enable precise large-scale neighbouring bunch simulations in high intensity cyclotrons. The solver is validated with a built-in multigrid solver of AMReX and a test problem with analytical solution. The parallel scalability is presented as well as an example of a neighbouring bunch simulation that covers the scale of the later anticipated physics simulation.

Several issues concerning the applicability of the temperature coefficient of the resistivity (TCR) method to scaled interconnect lines are discussed. The central approximation of the TCR method, the substitution of the interconnect wire TCR by the bulk TCR becomes doubtful when the resistivity of the conductor metal is strongly increased by finite size effects. Semiclassical calculations for thin films show that the TCR deviates from bulk values when the surface roughness scattering contribution to the total resistivity becomes significant with respect to grain boundary scattering, an effect that might become even more important in nanowires due to their larger surface-to-volume ration. In addition, the TCR method is redeveloped to account for line width roughness. It is shown that for rough wires, the TCR method yields the harmonic average of the cross-sectional area as well as, to first order, the accurate value of the resistivity at the extracted area. Finally, the effect of a conductive barrier or liner layer on the TCR method is discussed. It is shown that the liner or barrier parallel conductance can only be neglected when it is lower than about 5 to 10% of the total conductance. It is furthermore shown that neglecting the liner/barrier parallel conductance leads mainly to an overestimation of the cross-sectional area of the center conductor whereas its resistivity is less affected., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures

Machine learning (ML) is a subfield of artificial intelligence. The term applies broadly to a collection of computational algorithms and techniques that train systems from raw data rather than a priori models. ML techniques are now technologically mature enough to be applied to particle accelerators, and we expect that ML will become an increasingly valuable tool to meet new demands for beam energy, brightness, and stability. The intent of this white paper is to provide a high-level introduction to problems in accelerator science and operation where incorporating ML-based approaches may provide significant benefit. We review ML techniques currently being investigated at particle accelerator facilities, and we place specific emphasis on active research efforts and promising exploratory results. We also identify new applications and discuss their feasibility, along with the required data and infrastructure strategies. We conclude with a set of guidelines and recommendations for laboratory managers and administrators, emphasizing the logistical and technological requirements for successfully adopting this technology. This white paper also serves as a summary of the discussion from a recent workshop held at SLAC on ML for particle accelerators.

Radio frequency (RF) cavities are commonly used to accelerate charged particle beams. The shape of the RF cavity determines the resonant electromagnetic fields and frequencies, which need to satisfy a variety of requirements for a stable and efficient acceleration of the beam. For example, the accelerating frequency has to match a given target frequency, the shunt impedance usually has to be maximized, and the interaction of higher order modes with the beam minimized. In this paper we formulate such problems as constrained multi-objective shape optimization problems, use a massively parallel implementation of an evolutionary algorithm to find an approximation of the Pareto front, and employ a penalty method to deal with the constraint on the accelerating frequency. Considering vacuated axisymmetric RF cavities, we parameterize and mesh their cross section and then solve time-harmonic Maxwell's equations with perfectly electrically conducting boundary conditions using a fast 2D Maxwell eigensolver. The specific problem we focus on is the hypothetical problem of optimizing the shape of the main RF cavity of the planned upgrade of the Swiss Synchrotron Light Source (SLS), called SLS-2. We consider different objectives and geometry types and show the obtained results, i.e. the computed Pareto front approximations and the RF cavity shapes with desired properties. Finally, we compare these newfound cavity shapes with the current cavity of SLS.

We report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the iron-based superconductor family, Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. This system harbors the recently discovered double-Q magnetic order appearing in a reentrant C$_4$ phase deep within the underdoped regime of the phase diagram that is otherwise dominated by the coupled nematic phase and collinear antiferromagnetic order. From a detailed temperature-dependence study, we identify the electronic response to the nematic phase in an orbital-dependent band shift that strictly follows the rotational symmetry of the lattice and disappears when the system restores C$_4$ symmetry in the low temperature phase. In addition, we report the observation of a distinct electronic reconstruction that cannot be explained by the known electronic orders in the system.

Macro-particle tracking is a prominent method to study the collective beam instabilities in accelerators. However, the heavy computation load often limits the capability of the tracking codes. One widely used macro-particle tracking code to simulate collective instabilities in storage rings is mbtrack. The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is already implemented in the original mbtrack to accelerate the simulations. However, many CPU threads are requested in mbtrack for the analysis of the coupled-bunch instabilities. Therefore, computer clusters or desktops with many CPU cores are needed. Since these are not always available, we employ as alternative a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with CUDA programming interface to run such simulations in a stand-alone workstation. All the heavy computations have been moved to the GPU. The benchmarks confirm that mbtrack-cuda can be used to analyze coupled bunch instabilities up to at least 484 bunches. Compared to mbtrack on an 8-core CPU, 36-core CPU and a cluster, mbtrack-cuda is faster for simulations of up to 3 bunches. For 363 bunches, mbtrack-cuda needs about six times the execution time of the cluster and twice of the 36-core CPU. The multi-bunch instability analysis shows that the length of the ion-cleaning gap has no big influence, at least at filling to 3/4., Comment: submitted to NIM-A

Superconductivity in FeSe has recently attracted a great deal of attention because it emerges out of an electronic nematic state of elusive character. Here we study both the electronic normal state and the superconducting gap structure using heat-capacity measurements on high-quality single crystals. The specific-heat curve, from 0.4 K to Tc = 9.1 K, is found to be consistent with a recent gap determination using Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference [P. O. Sprau et al., Science 357, 75 (2017)], however only if nodes are introduced on either the electron or the hole Fermi-surface sheets. Our analysis, which is consistent with quantum-oscillation measurements, relies on the presence of only two bands, and thus the fate of the theoretically predicted second electron pocket remains mysterious., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The nematic susceptibility of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals is studied by measuring the Young's modulus using a three-point-bending setup in a capacitance dilatometer over a wide doping range. Particular emphasis is placed on the behavior within the double-Q antiferromagnetic $C_{4}$ re-entrant phase. Here, we surprisingly still observe a sizable nematic susceptibility in spite of the well-developed magnetic order, consistent with recent theoretical calculations. Outside the $C_{4}$ re-entrant region, the behavior is very similar to that of K-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. A significant coupling of superconductivity to the shear modulus is observed and is discussed in terms of strong competition between the superconducting and magnetic phases., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We study the generation of propagating spin waves in Ta/CoFeB waveguides by spin-orbit torque antennas and compare them to conventional inductive antennas. The spin-orbit torque was generated by a transverse microwave current across the magnetic waveguide. The detected spin wave signals for an in-plane magnetization across the waveguide (Damon-Eshbach configuration) exhibited the expected phase rotation and amplitude decay upon propagation when the current spreading was taken into account. Wavevectors up to about 6 rad/$\mu$m could be excited by the spin-orbit torque antennas despite the current spreading, presumably due to the non-uniformity of the microwave current. The relative magnitude of generated anti-damping spin-Hall and Oersted fields was calculated within an analytic model and it was found that they contribute approximately equally to the total effective field generated by the spin-orbit torque antenna. Due to the ellipticity of the precession in the ultrathin waveguide and the different orientation of the anti-damping spin-Hall and Oersted fields, the torque was however still dominated by the Oersted field. The prospects for obtaining a pure spin-orbit torque response are discussed, as are the energy efficiency and the scaling properties of spin-orbit torque antennas., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

We present high-resolution thermal-expansion and specific-heat measurements of single crystalline alpha-RuCl3. An extremely hysteretic structural transition expanding over 100 K is observed by thermal- expansion along both crystallographic axes, which we attribute to a change of stacking sequence of the RuCl3 layers. Three magnetic transitions are observed, which we link to the different stacking sequences. Using our data and thermodynamic relations, we derive the uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure derivatives of all three magnetic transitions. Our results demonstrate that magnetic order should be totally suppressed by very moderate pressures of 0.3 GPa to 0.9 GPa. Finally, we discuss why our results differ from recent hydrostatic pressure measurements and suggest a possible route to reaching the spin-liquid state in alpha-RuCl3., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Ru has been considered a candidate to replace Cu-based interconnects in VLSI circuits. Here, a methodology is proposed to predict the resistivity of (Ru) interconnects. First, the dependence of the Ru thin film resistivity on the film thickness is modeled by the semiclassical Mayadas-Shatzkes (MS) approach. The fitting parameters thus obtained are then used as input in a modified MS model for nanowires to calculate wire resistivities. Predicted experimental resistivities agreed within about 10%. The results further indicate that grain boundary scattering was the dominant scattering mechanism in scaled Ru interconnects., Comment: 4 pages. 2 figures

In a cyclotron-based proton therapy facility, the energy changes are performed by means of a degrader of variable thickness. The interaction of the proton beam with the degrader creates energy tails and increases the beam emittance. A precise model of the degraded beam properties is important not only to better understand the performance of a facility already in operation, but also to support the development of new proton therapy concepts. The exact knowledge of the degraded beam properties, in terms of energy spectrum and transverse phase space, depends on the model used to describe the proton interaction with the degrader material. In this work the model of a graphite degrader has been developed with four Monte Carlo codes: three conventional Monte Carlo codes (FLUKA, GEANT4 and MCNPX) and the multi-purpose particle tracking code OPAL equipped with a simplified Monte Carlo routine. From the comparison between the different codes, we can deduce how the accuracy of the degrader model influences the precision of the beam dynamics model of a possible transport line downstream of the degrader.

A tomographic gas-density diagnostic using a single-beam Wollaston interferometer able to characterise non-symmetric density distributions in gas jets is presented. A real-time tomographic algorithm is able to reconstruct three dimensional density distributions. A Maximum Likelihood -- Expectation Maximisation algorithm, an iterative method with good convergence properties compared to simple back projection, is used. With the use of graphical processing units, real time computation and high resolution are achieved. Two different gas jets are characterised: a kHz, piezo-driven jet for lower densities and a solenoid valve based jet producing higher densities. While the first is planned for to be used in bunch length monitors at the free electron laser at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI, SwissFEL), the second jet is planned to be used for laser wakefield acceleration experiments, exploring the linear regime. In this latter application, well-tailored and non-symmetric density distributions produced by a supersonic shock front generated by a razor blade inserted laterally to the gas flow, which breaks cylindrical symmetry, need to be characterized., Comment: Accepted for publication in Applied Sciences

It is generally understood that the resistivity of metal thin films scales with film thickness mainly due to grain boundary and boundary surface scattering. Recently, several experiments and ab initio simulations have demonstrated the impact of crystal orientation on resistivity scaling. The crystal orientation cannot be captured by the commonly used resistivity scaling models and a qualitative understanding of its impact is currently lacking. In this work, we derive a resistivity scaling model that captures grain boundary and boundary surface scattering as well as the anisotropy of the band structure. The model is applied to Cu and Ru thin films, whose conduction bands are (quasi-)isotropic and anisotropic respectively. After calibrating the anisotropy with ab initio simulations, the resistivity scaling models are compared to experimental resistivity data and a renormalization of the fitted grain boundary reflection coefficient can be identified for textured Ru., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The mechanical behavior of magnetoelectric transducers consisting of piezoelectric-magnetostrictive bilayers has been modeled. The effect of the aspect ratio of the transducer as well as the influence of non-active surrounding layers has been modeled, including a passivation layer surrounding the active device, a clamping layer above the active device, and an interfacial layer that might be inserted between the magnetostrictive and the piezoelectric layers. Strategies to control and maximize the strain magnitude and orientation based on material selection and device design are proposed., Comment: MNE2017, 6 pages, 4 figures

The charge and spin dynamics of the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor, FeSe, may hold the key to understanding the physics of high temperature superconductors in general. Unlike the iron pnictides, FeSe lacks long range magnetic order in spite of a similar structural transition around 90\,K. Here, we report results of Raman scattering experiments as a function of temperature and polarization and simulations based on exact diagonalization of a frustrated spin model. Both experiment and theory find a persistent low energy peak close to 500cm$^{-1}$ in $B_{1g}$ symmetry, which softens slightly around 100\,K, that we assign to spin excitations. By comparing with results from neutron scattering, this study provides evidence for nearly frustrated stripe order in FeSe., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures
