The use of plants rich in tannins (PRT) with anthelmintic properties (AH) is an alternative for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes (NGI) in species of cattle interest. The attention in plants with these properties is mainly due to the appearance and extension of parasitic populations resistant to anthelmintics. Recently, in Yucatan, the effect of AH from plant extracts on Haemonchus contortus eggs has been reponed by the hatching inhibition test. Among the main plant species with AH properties are ethanolic and hexane extracts, mainly from the foliage of Lysiloma latisiliquum, Laguncularia racemosa, Rizophora mangle and Avicennia germinans, Theobroma cacao and Coffea arabica. However, it has recently been observed that legumes are an important source of secondary metabolites such as Leucaena leucocephala, Lysiloma latisiliquum, Acacia cornígera and Mimosa bahamensis. The evidence shows that the secondary metabolites that contain some forage legumes affect various biological processes of the gastrointestinal nematodes of ruminants, so it could be an alternative for the control of helminths in the production of small ruminants.

Previous studies have illustrated that different bioactive legume fodders containing condensed tannins might represent one of the options for integrated sustainable control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in ruminants, which may help address the worldwide development of resistance to synthetic anthelmintics. More recently, impetus has been given to assess the potential antiparasitic activity of less conventional resources, represented by different agro-industrial by-products (AIBPs). This review presents in vitro and in vivo results obtained with a range of tannin-containing AIBPs of various geographical and botanical origins, namely AIBP of nuts, temperate and tropical barks, carob, coffee and cocoa. They tend to confirm the “proof of concept” for their antiparasitic effects and also for other aspects of ruminant production in an agro-ecological context. Socio-economic aspects of the exploitation of such non-conventional resources are also discussed as potential models of the circular economy, by using waste. The different modes of use of these resources are presented in this review, as well as strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analyses to illustrate the advantages and limitations of on-farm use.

Due to the increasing populations of anthelmintic-resistant gastrointestinal nematodes and as a consequence of the adverse effects of synthetic drugs, this study focuses on the search for secondary metabolites with nematocidal activity from the edible mushroom Pleurotus djamor using The proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) metabolomics. The highest activity was shown by the ethyl acetate fractions of mycelium (EC50 290.8 µg/mL) and basidiomes (EC50 282.7 µg/mL). Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical data analysis (HCA) of the 1H-NMR metabolic profiles data showed that the ethanolic extracts, the ethyl acetate, butanol, and water fractions from mycelium have different metabolic profiles than those from basidiomes, while low polarity (hexane) fractions from both stages of fungal development show similar profiles. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) allowed the identification of signals in the 1H-NMR metabolic profile associated with nematocidal activity. The signals yielded via OPLS-DA and bidimensional NMR analysis allowed the identification of uracil as a component in the ethyl acetate fraction from basidiomes, with an EC50 of 237.7 µg/mL. The results obtained showed that chemometric analyses of the 1H-NMR metabolic profiles represent a viable strategy for the identification of bioactive compounds from samples with complex chemical profiles. Acacia crassicarpa is an important tree species in Southeast Asia, where hundreds of thousands of hectares of planted forests are supported by advancements in silviculture and genetic improvement. Although possible, controlled pollination is impractical for advancing breeding populations, requiring an unreasonable effort to produce more than a few crosses per year. For this reason, breeding populations often are bred by open pollination. This study used large-scale pedigree reconstruction in multi-environment trials to assess full-sib families to model the genetics of the quantitative traits survival, straightness, height, diameter at breast height, tree volume, mean annual increment (MAI), and basic density. The traits were predominantly controlled by additive effects, with heritabilities between 0.09 for survival and 0.45 for basic density. The genetic correlation across sites was high for all traits, showing the low impact of genotype-by-environment interaction. The trait-trait correlation showed that straightness was independent of any other traits, survival was only correlated with MAI, and growth traits were highly correlated among themselves. Basic density was positively correlated with growth traits and MAI. Study Implications: Parentage analysis using an informative single nucleotide polymorphism panel was used to reconstruct pedigree and allow a full-sib family model to estimate additive and dominance effects and genetic correlations across sites and among important traits in an open-pollinated population. The genetic control of all traits assessed in this study was mainly additive. In this scenario, the recommended breeding strategy is forward selection of outstanding progeny for advanced generation breeding and backward selection of outstanding parents to produce seed for deployment via family forestry. Full-sib families can be identified by pedigree reconstruction at a seedling stage, followed by tissue culture multiplication, rooted cutting propagation, and plantation establishment.
