The photocatalytic degradation (PCD) of ethanol in an inert atmosphere on catalysis was explored in a lab-scale experiment. A morphologically tuned nanostructured controlled ZnO and ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal process under the control of several functionally capping agents marking a milestone in photocatalysis. It is possible that this could be modified to produce photobiogas out of organic dye pollution. The photocatalysts were characterized by the use of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area analyzer, Scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX), and UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnO and ZnO–TiO2 composite nanostructures was evaluated for the photodegradation of the Tartrazine (Tr) dye aqueous solution. Where the composite matrix exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than pure ZnO nanomaterials as a result of the synergistic interaction between ZnO and TiO2 particles. This is mainly due to its higher surface area than pure ZnO. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of the tuned nanostructured materials is found to be enhanced by the effect of the capping agent and controlling the morphology. This increase is accompanied by a significant shift in surface shape and band gap energy. According to the findings, the designed morphologies of pure ZnO photocatalyst impacted the formation of photobiogas from the photocatalytic decomposition of ethanol as a model of organic pollutants in wastewater. However, when using composite ZnO/TiO2 photocatalysts, the rate of CH4 formation is significantly lower than when using ZnO photocatalysts alone. This may be attributed to the synergetic effect between ZnO and TiO2 particles which leads to a remarkable reduction in the newly formed band gap energy. A novel, simple, sensitive and precise spectrofluorimetric method is developed for measuring the activity of the α-amylase enzyme in human saliva. The remarkable quenching of the luminescence intensity at 634 nm of nano CdS doped in a sol–gel matrix by various concentrations of maltose (produced from the reaction of the enzyme with the starch substrate) was successfully used as an optical sensor for the assessment of α-amylase activity. The calibration plot was achieved over the concentration range 4.8 × 10−10 to 1.2 × 10−5 mol L−1 maltose with a correlation coefficient of 0.999 and a detection limit of 5.7 × 10−11 mol L−1. A method for preparing 99mTc-Dacarbazine, a potential cancer diagnostic agent, was developed. The method is based on direct labeling of Dacarbazine with 99mTc in the presence of stannous chloride as reducing agent. The reaction conditions were optimized to obtain the radiochemical yield of 99mTc-Dacarbazine higher than 90%. The biodistribution of 99mTc-Dacarbazine in normal and tumor-bearing Albino Swiss mice was studied. 99mTc-Dacarbazine has a high tumor affinity and shows promise for cancer imaging. TiO2 immobilized on polyethylene (PET) nonwoven sheet was used in the solar photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB). TiO2 Evonik Aeroxide P25 was used in this study. The amount of loaded TiO2 on PET was approximately 24%. Immobilization of TiO2 on PET was conducted by dip coating process followed by exposing to mild heat and pressure. TiO2/PET sheets were wrapped on removable Teflon rods inside home-made bench-scale recirculating flow Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) photoreactor prototype (platform 0.7 × 0.2 × 0.4 m3). CPC photoreactor is made up of seven low iron borosilicate glass tubes connected in series. CPC reflectors are made of stainless steel 304. The prototype was mounted on a platform tilted at 30°N local latitude in Cairo. A centrifugal pump was used to circulate water containing methylene blue (MB) dye inside the glass tubes. Efficient photocatalytic degradation of MB using TiO2/PET was achieved upon the exposure to direct sunlight. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) analyses reveal the complete mineralization of MB. Durability of TiO2/PET composite was also tested under sunlight irradiation. Results indicate only 6% reduction in the amount of TiO2 after seven cycles. Europium (III) with different concentrations (0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 %)-TiO doped silica composite systems were sensitized by sol-gel method. Different spectroscopic and microscopic tools characterized the composites. The Europium ion incorporated into the liquid silica-titania solution acts as red light emission center in the luminescent materials. This luminescent nano composite pigment has great potential of application in preparing luminescent ink. Mesoporous nanotitania photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel method in acidic or basic media. Three types of surfactants, namely, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, and nonylphenol ethoxylate, were used as templating agents. The effects of surfactant type and pH on the morphology, particle size, surface area, pore-size distribution, UV-Vis absorbance, and TiO2 phase transformation were traced by SEM, TEM, BET, and XRD. In absence of surfactants, XRD revealed 54.5% anatase at pH 3-4 and 97.0% at pH 7-9. In presence of surfactant, phase transformation of anatase has been significantly inhibited such that anatase amounts to 82-100% in acidic media. In basic media, the brookite phase appeared in low concentrations (8-15%) while rutile totally disappeared. The photocatalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts was tested via naphthalene degradation, which exhibited high activity in visible irradiation (>400 nm). The data obtained indicate that the surface area and pore volume of the current catalysts are the most effective factors for photocatalytic performance. Nevertheless, at the low pH (acidic) range, the CTAB templated catalyst gave the highest surface area (86.7 cm³/g), which is mainly assigned to acquiring the highest photocatalytic degradation of naphthalene (97% after 4 h irradiation time). The most efficient DSSCs reported till date contains liquid electrolytes with I/I redox couple. However, the disadvantages of liquid electrolytes lead to reduce the impact of DSSCs. In the present work, the I/I liquid electrolyte was replaced by quasi-solid gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) using polyethylene glycol (M = 20,000), which are incorporated in small fractions (0, 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 % w/v) into the liquid iodine/iodide electrolyte matrix. The roughness and homogeneity of the GPEs on the surface of the TiO electrodes was monitored by atomic force microscope which indicates the physical cross linking of polymer chains in a gel network. The conductivity (σ) and the thermal stability (TGA) of the GPEs compared with the liquid electrolyte were studied in details. The photovoltaic characteristics [V, I, fill factor and efficiency (η)] of the DSSCs based GPEs were recorded, The results revealed the DSSCs assembled with the gel polymer electrolyte reports a higher short circuit density (J) and lower or similar open circuit voltage (V) than the cells with liquid electrolyte. The overall light-to-electrical-energy conversion efficiencies (η) of the cells based GPEs showed a relatively higher stability over a period of time compared with those based liquid electrolyte, indicating that the quasi-solid nature of the GPEs may impart flexibility to DSSCs so that some large-scale productions such as roll-to-roll process can be realized. Titania (TiO) nanorods have been synthesized with controlled size for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) via hydrothermal route at low hydrothermal temperature of 100 °C for 24 h. The titania nanorods were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM/HRTEM, UV-vis Spectroscopy, FTIR and BET specific surface area ( S), as well as pore-size distribution by BJH. The results indicated that the bulk traps and the surface states within the TiO nanorods films have enhanced the efficiency of DSSCs. The size of the titania nanorods was 6.7 nm in width and 22 nm in length. The high surface area can provide more sites for dye adsorption, while the fast photoelectron-transfer channel can enhance the photogenerated electron transfer to complete the circuit. The specific surface area S was 77.14 m g at the synthesis conditions. However, the band gap energy of the obtained titania nanorods was 3.2 eV. The oriented nanorods with appropriate lengths are beneficial in improving the electron transport property and thus leading to the increase of photocurrent, together enhancing the power conversion efficiency. A nearly quantitative absorbed photon-to-electrical current conversion achieved upon excitation at wave length of 550 nm and the power efficiency was enhanced from 5.6 % for commercial TiO nanoparticles Degussa (P25) cells to 7.2 % for TiO nanorods cells under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm). The photochromism of [7′-hydroxy-8′-formyl-3-methyl-4-oxospiro[1,3-benzoxazin-2,2′-[2H-1]benzopyran],SP(I),[7′-hydroxy-8′formyl-3-benzyl-4-oxospiro[1,3-benzoxazin-2,2′[2H-1]benzopyran] SP(II) and their coordination with Tb3+and Sm3+ ions have been studied in DMF. UV/vis induced-color development due to heterolytic bond cleavage of SP(I) and SP(II) is greatly influenced by complexation with the lanthanide ions. The irradiation-induced color enhancement due to ring opening and thermal decoloration of the open forms of SP(I), SP(II) follows first-order kinetics. Physical characteristics of the studied systems such as colorability and relaxation time of thermal bleaching parameters were determined. This study presents the first in vivo and in vitro evidence of an externally controlled, predictive, MRI-based nanotheranostic agent capable of cancer cell specific targeting and killing via irreversible electroporation (IRE) in solid tumors. The rectangular-prism-shaped magnetoelectric nanoparticle is a smart nanoparticle that produces a local electric field in response to an externally applied magnetic field. When externally activated, MENPs are preferentially attracted to the highly conductive cancer cell membranes, which occurs in cancer cells because of dysregulated ion flux across their membranes. In a pancreatic adenocarcinoma murine model, MENPs activated by external magnetic fields during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) resulted in a mean three-fold tumor volume reduction (62.3% vs 188.7%; P < .001) from a single treatment. In a longitudinal confirmatory study, 35% of mice treated with activated MENPs achieved a durable complete response for 14 weeks after one treatment. The degree of tumor volume reduction correlated with a decrease in MRI T 2 * relaxation time ( r = .351; P = .039) which suggests that MENPs have a potential to serve as a predictive nanotheranostic agent at time of treatment. There were no discernable toxicities associated with MENPs at any timepoint or on histopathological analysis of major organs. MENPs are a noninvasive alternative modality for the treatment of cancer., Summary: We investigated the theranostic capabilities of magnetoelectric nanoparticles (MENPs) combined with MRI via a murine model of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. MENPs leverage the magnetoelectric effect to convert an applied magnetic field into local electric fields, which can induce irreversible electroporation of tumor cell membranes when activated by MRI. Additionally, MENPs modulate MRI relaxivity, which can be used to predict the degree of tumor ablation. Through a pilot study (n=21) and a confirmatory study (n=27), we demonstrated that, ≥300 µg of MRI-activated MENPs significantly reduced tumor volumes, averaging a three-fold decrease as compared to controls. Furthermore, there was a direct correlation between the reduction in tumor T 2 relaxation times and tumor volume reduction, highlighting the predictive prognostic value of MENPs. Six of 17 mice in the confirmatory study's experimental arms achieved a durable complete response, showcasing the potential for durable treatment outcomes. Importantly, the administration of MENPs was not associated with any evident toxicities. This study presents the first in vivo evidence of an externally controlled, MRI-based, theranostic agent that effectively targets and treats solid tumors via irreversible electroporation while sparing normal tissues, offering a new and promising approach to cancer therapy.
