152. A study of the hadronic resonance structure in the decay tau -> 3 pi nu(tau)

Abstract

The hadronic structure of the decay of the τ lepton to three charged particles, τ → 3πντ, is studied using data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP between 1992 and 1995. The invariant mass of the 3π system, m3π, is fitted using the models of Kühn and Santamaria, Isgur Morningstar and Reader, and Feindt. The 3π and π+π- mass spectra are compared with each model. Below m23π = 2.3 GeV2, all are in good qualitative agreement. Above m23π = 2.3 GeV2, anomalous behaviour is observed, consistent with the existence of a hitherto unseen decay mode of the τ through a radial excitation of the a1 meson. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. 153. Search for sleptons in e(+)e(-) collisions at root s=183 to 189 GeV

Abstract

Data taken by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 212 pb-1 have been used to search for the supersymmetric partners of the electrons, muons, and taus in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The decay topologies searched for were the direct decay (ℓ̃ → ℓx̃), producing acoplanar lepton pairs plus missing energy, and the cascade decay (ℓ → ℓx̃02 → ℓγx̃01), producing acoplanar lepton and photon pairs plus missing energy. The observed number of events is in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The 95% CL excluded mass limits for selectrons, smuons and staus are mẽ ≤ 87 GeV/c2, mμ̃ ≤ 80 GeV/c2 and mτ̃ 75 GeV/c2, respectively, for values of μ=-200 GeV/c2 and tanβ=1.5.

Abstract

The DELPHI experiment at LEP uses Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors for particle identification. The good understanding of the RICH detectors allows the identification of charged pions, kaons and protons, covering the full momentum range from 0.7 < p < 45.6GeV/c. The π±, K±, p and p̄ normalised production rates, their differential cross sections, multiplicities and the maxima ξ*p of_the ξp = ln (1/Xp) distributions are measured for three event samples Z0 → qq̄, Z0 → bb̄, Z0 → uū, dd̄, ss̄, selected from ∼ 1 400 000 Z0 decays collected by DELPHI in 1994. The results are compared to the predictions of the JETSET string fragmentation model and the HERWIG cluster fragmentation model. The Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation with Local Parton-Hadron Duality is tested. The ξ*p dependence on the primary quark flavour is investigated and quantified for the different particle distributions. The π± , K±, p and p̄ multiplicities are measured with precisions from ±4% to ±6%. Forche Z0 → qq̄, and Z0 → bb̄, event samples, these improve on previous measurements. The π±, K±, p and p̄ multiplicities for Z0 → uū, dd̄, ss̄ are presented for the first time.

Abstract

The inclusive production of the neutral vector mesons K-*0(892) and phi(1020), and of the tensor meson K-2(*0)(1430), in hadronic decays of the Z has been mea sured by the DELPHI detector at LEP. The average production rates per hadronic Z decay have been determined to be 0.77 +/- 0.08 K-2(*0)(892), 0.104 +/- 0.008 phi(1020) and 0.079 +/- 0.040 K-2(*0)(1430). The ratio of the tensor-to-vector meson production yields, [K-2(*0)(1430)]/[K-*0(892)] = 0.10 +/- 0.05, is smaller than the [f(2)(1270)]/[rho(0)(770)] and [f'(2)(1525)]/[phi(1020)] ratios measured by DELPHI. The production rates and differential cross sections are compared with the predictions of JETSET 7.4 tuned to the DELPHI data and of HERWIG 5.8. The K-*0(892) and phi(1020) data are compatible with model predictions, but a large disagreement is observed for the K-2(*0)(1430).

157. MEASUREMENT OF THE E+E- -] GAMMA-GAMMA(GAMMA) CROSS-SECTION AT LEP ENERGIES

Abstract

The total and the differential cross sections for the reaction e+e- → γγ(γ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP using an integrated luminosity of 36.9 pb-1. The results agree with the QED predictions and consequently there is no evidence for non-standard channels with the same experimental signature. The lower limits obtained on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ+ > 143 GeV and Λ- > 120 GeV, and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λγ = 1 is 132 GeV/c2. Upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays Z0 → γγ, Z0 → π0γ, Z0 → ηγ and Z0 → γγγ have been determined to be 5.5 × 10-5, 5.5 × 10-5, 8.0 × 10-5, and 1.7 × 10-5 respectively. All the limits are at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract

The results of a search for squarks and gluinos using data from p over(p, ̄) collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV by the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider are reported. The topologies analyzed consist of acoplanar-jet and multijet events with large missing transverse energy. No evidence for the production of squarks or gluinos was found in a data sample of 310 pb-1. Lower limits of 325 and 241 GeV were derived at the 95% C.L. on the squark and gluino masses, respectively, within the framework of minimal supergravity with tan β = 3, A0 = 0, and μ < 0. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

We present the results of a search for the production of an excited state of the electron, e*, in proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96TeV. The data were collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1fb-1. We search for e* in the process pp̄→e*e, with the e* subsequently decaying to an electron plus photon. No excess above the standard model background is observed. Interpreting our data in the context of a model that describes e* production by four-fermion contact interactions and e* decay via electroweak processes, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross section ranging from 8.9 to 27 fb, depending on the mass of the excited electron. Choosing the scale for contact interactions to be Λ=1TeV, excited electron masses below 756 GeV are excluded at the 95% C.L. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

We combine the D0 measurement of the width difference between the light and heavy Bs0 mass eigenstates and of the CP-violating mixing phase determined from the time-dependent angular distributions in the Bs0→J/ψ decays along with the charge asymmetry in semileptonic decays also measured with the D0 detector. With the additional constraint from the world average of the flavor-specific Bs0 lifetime, we obtain ΔΓs≡(ΓL- ΓH)=0.13±0.09ps-1 and | s|=0.70-0.47+0.39 or ΔΓs=-0. 13±0.09ps-1 and | s|=2.44-0.39+0.47. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.1fb-1 accumulated with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report on a study of the relative rates of B meson decays into ψ(2S) and J/ψ mesons using 1.3fb-1 of pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV recorded by the D0 detector operating at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe the channels Bs0→ψ(2S), Bs0→J/ψ, B±→ψ(2S) K±, and B±→J/ψK± and we measure the relative branching fractions for these channels to be B(Bs0→ψ(2S))B(Bs0→J/ ψ)=0.53±0.10(stat)±0.07(syst)±0.06(B), B(B±→ψ(2S)K±)B(B±→J/ψK±)=0. 63±0.05(stat)±0.03(syst)±0.07(B),where the final error corresponds to the uncertainty in the J/ψ and ψ(2S) branching ratio into two muons. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Inclusive distributions of charged particles in hadronic W decays are experimentally investigated using the statistics collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP during 1997, 1998 and 1999, at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to around 200 GeV. The possible effects of interconnection between the hadronic decays of two Ws are not observed. Measurements of the average multiplicity for charged and identified particles in qq̄ and WW events at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 200 GeV and in W decays are presented. The results on the average multiplicity of identified particles and on the position ξ* of the maximum of the ξp = -log(2p/√s) distribution are compared with predictions of JETSET and MLLA calculations.

Abstract

A search for direct production of scalar bottom quarks (b) is performed with 310 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment in pp collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The topology analyzed consists of two b jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum due to undetected neutralinos (chi(1)0), with chi(1)0 assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. We find the data consistent with standard model expectations, and set a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the (m(b), m(chi(1)0)) mass plane, improving significantly upon the results from run I of the Tevatron.

Abstract

The time dependent mixing of Bd0-B̄d0 mesons has been observed by using the correlations between the charge of D* mesons and the weighted mean charge of particles in each hemisphere. From a reconstructed D*± sample corresponding to about 1.7 million hadronic Z0 decays, the mass difference between the two Bd0 mass eigenstates has been measured to be Δm = 0.50±0.12 (stat.) ± 0.06 (syst.) (Latin small letter h with stroke sign)/ps or, converting into eV/c2: Δm = [3.29±0.79 (stat.) ± 0.39 (syst.)] 10-4 eV/c2.

Measurements are presented of R b, the ratio of the cross-section to the cross-section in e+e- collisions, and the forward-backward asymmetry A FBb at twelve energy points in the range sqrt{s}=130-207 GeV. These results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations. Abstract

This analysis, based on a sample of 170000 hadronic Z0 decays, provides a measurement of the K± and p/p differential cross sections which is compared to string- and cluster fragmentation models. The total multiplicities for K± and p/p per hadronic event were found to be: NK = 2.26 ± 0.18 and Np = 1.07 ± 0.14. The positions ξ* of the maxima of the differential cross sections as a function of ξ = ln(1/xp) for K± and p/p were determined to be 2.63 ± 0.07 and 2.96 ± 0.16 respectively. A comparison of the ξ* values for various identified particles measured at LEP with the prediction of the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation with Local Parton Hadron Duality model has been performed. The measured ξ* position as a function of the hadron mass, after corrections due to particle decays, is in agreement with the model calculation. © 1995.

Abstract

A search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons Phi decaying into tau(+)tau(-) final states in pp[over ] collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV is presented. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 325 pb(-1), were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Since no excess compared to the expectation from standard model processes is found, limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are set. The results are combined with those obtained from the D0 search for Phib(b[over ])-->bb[over ]b(b[over ]) and are interpreted in the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

Abstract

We present a study of the polarization of the Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) states using a 1.3fb-1 data sample collected by the D0 experiment in 2002-2006 during run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We measure the polarization parameter α=(σT-2σL)/(σT+2σL), where σT and σL are the transversely and longitudinally polarized components of the production cross section, as a function of the transverse momentum (pTΥ) for the Υ(1S) and Υ(2S). Significant pTΥ-dependent longitudinal polarization is observed for the Υ(1S). A comparison with theoretical models is presented. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a search for a narrow-width heavy resonance decaying into top quark pairs (X → t over(t, ̄)) in p over(p, ̄) collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV using approximately 0.9 fb-1 of data collected with the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. This analysis considers t over(t, ̄) candidate events in the lepton plus jets channel with at least one identified b jet and uses the t over(t, ̄) invariant mass distribution to search for evidence of resonant production. We find no evidence for a narrow resonance X decaying to t over(t, ̄). Therefore, we set upper limits on σX ṡ B (X → t over(t, ̄)) for different hypothesized resonance masses using a Bayesian approach. For a Topcolor-assisted technicolor model, the existence of a leptophobic Z′ boson with mass MZ′ < 700 GeV and width ΓZ′ = 0.012 MZ′ can be excluded at the 95% C.L. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

The results of a search for direct pair production of scalar top quarks (t̃), the supersymmetric partners of the top quark were presented. Events containing two or more jets and missing transverse energy, the signature of light scalar top quark decays to charm quarks and neutralinos were investigated. 27 events were observed after the selection, while expecting 31.1±6.4 events from known standard model processes. The results were compared to next-to-leading-order production cross sections, and a significant region of t̃ and neutralino phase space was excluded.

We present a measurement of the top quark pair (tt̄) production cross section in pp̄ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV using events with two charged leptons in the final state. This analysis utilizes an integrated luminosity of 224-243 pb-1 collected with the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe 13 events in the e+e -, eμ and μ+μ- channels with an expected background of 3.2±0.7 events. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure a tt̄ production cross section of σtt̄=8. 6-2.7+3.2(stat)±1.1(syst)±0.6(lumi) pb, consistent with the standard model prediction. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

We present a measurement of the top quark pair (tt̄) production cross section (σtt̄) in pp̄ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV using 230 pb-1 of data collected by the DØ experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the tt̄ purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure σtt̄=8.6-1.5+1.6(stat.+syst.) ±0.6(lumi.) pb, in agreement with the standard model expectation.

Abstract

The form factor of Λb 0 baryons is estimated using 3.46×106 hadronic Z decays collected by the DELPHI experiment between 1992 and 1995. Charmed Λc + baryons fully reconstructed in the pK-π+, pK S 0, and Λπ+π+π - modes, are associated to a lepton with opposite charge in order to select Λb 0→Λc +l-ν̄l decays. From a combined likelihood and event rate fit to the distribution of the Isgur-Wise variable w, and using the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET), the slope of the b-baryon form factor is measured to be ρ̂2=2.03±0.46(stat) -1.00 +0.72(syst). The exclusive semileptonic branching fraction Br(Λb 0→Λc +l-ν̄l) can be derived from ρ̂2 and is found to be (5.0-0.8 +1.1(stat)-1.2 +1.6(syst))%. Two different b tagging techniques have been used: events with two leptons and events with one lepton and one Λ. From a combination of the two methods the average mixing parameter, χ, was determined to be (12.1±1.6(stat.)±0.4(syst.)±0.4(model)%. © 1994.

We report on a search for charge-1/3 third-generation leptoquarks (LQ) produced in pp collisions at square root s =1.96 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Third-generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to a tau neutrino and a b quark with branching fraction B. We place upper limits on sigma(pp --> LQLQ)B2 as a function of the leptoquark mass M(LQ). Assuming B=1, we exclude at the 95% confidence level third-generation scalar leptoquarks with M(LQ)

Abstract

We present measurements of the Lambda(0)(b) lifetime in the exclusive decay channel Lambda(0)(b)--> J/psiLambda(0), with J/psi--> mu(+)mu(-) and Lambda(0)--> ppi(-), the B0 lifetime in the decay B0-->J/psiK(0)(S) with J/psi--> mu(+)mu(-) and K(0)(S)-->pi(+)pi(-), and the ratio of these lifetimes. The analysis is based on approximately 250 pb(-1) of data recorded with the D0 detector in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. The Lambda(0)(b) lifetime is determined to be tau(Lambda(0)(b)) = 1.22(+0.22)(-0.18)(stat) +/- 0.04(syst) ps, the B0 lifetime tau(B0) = 1.40(+0.11)(-0.10)(stat) +/- 0.03(syst) ps, and the ratio tau(Lambda(0)(b))/tau(B0) = 0.87(+0.17)(-0.14)(stat) +/- 0.03(syst). In contrast with previous measurements using semileptonic decays, this is the first determination of the Lambda(0)(b) lifetime based on a fully reconstructed decay channel.

Abstract

We search for the technicolor process pp̄→ρT/ ωT→WπT in events containing one electron and two jets, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 390pb-1, recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Technicolor predicts that technipions πT decay dominantly into bb̄, bc̄, or b̄c, depending on their charge. In these events b and c quarks are identified by their secondary decay vertices within jets. Two analysis methods based on topological variables are presented. Since no excess above the standard model prediction was found, the result is presented as an exclusion in the πT vs ρT mass plane for a given set of model parameters. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

A fully reconstructed Bc-->J/psipi signal is observed with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp[over] collider using 1.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. The signal consists of 54+/-12 candidates with a significance that exceeds 5 standard deviations, and confirms earlier observations of this decay. The measured mass of the Bc meson is 6300+/-14(stat)+/-5(syst) MeV/c2.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the inclusive jet cross section in pp̄ collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=1.96TeV using data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.70fb-1. The data cover jet transverse momenta from 50 to 600 GeV and jet rapidities in the range -2.4 to 2.4. Detailed studies of correlations between systematic uncertainties in transverse momentum and rapidity are presented, and the cross section measurements are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a search for direct CP violation in B±→J/ ψK±(π±) decays. The event sample is selected from 2.8fb-1 of pp̄ collisions recorded by D0 experiment in run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The charge asymmetry ACP(B+→J/ψK+)=+0.0075±0. 0061(stat)±0.0030(syst) is obtained using a sample of approximately 40000 B±→J/ψK± decays. The achieved precision is of the same level as the expected deviation predicted by some extensions of the standard model. We also measured the charge asymmetry ACP(B+→J/ψπ+)=-0. 09±0.08(stat)±0.03(syst). © 2008 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a search for large extra dimensions (ED) in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using data collected by the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994-1996. Data corresponding to 78.8+/-3.9 pb(-1) are examined for events with large missing transverse energy, one high-p(T) jet, and no isolated muons. There is no excess observed beyond expectation from the standard model, and we place lower limits on the fundamental Planck scale of 1.0 and 0.6 TeV for 2 and 7 ED, respectively.

Abstract

We describe a search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass of 105 GeV/ c2 to 145 GeV/ c2 in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 450 pb-1 collected with the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p over(p, ̄) collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The Higgs boson is required to be produced in association with a Z boson, and the Z boson is required to decay to either electrons or muons with the Higgs boson decaying to a b over(b, ̄) pair. The data are well described by the expected background, leading to 95% confidence level cross section upper limits σ (p over(p, ̄) → Z H) × B (H → b over(b, ̄)) in the range of 3.1 pb to 4.4 pb. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

We report on a search for large extra dimensions in a data sample of approximately 1fb-1 of pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV. We investigate Kaluza-Klein graviton production with a photon and missing transverse energy in the final state. At the 95% C.L. we set limits on the fundamental mass scale MD from 884to 778GeV for two to eight extra dimensions. © 2008 The American Physical Society.
