l -methionine is an essential amino acid for human nutrition. Its global market demand is expanding gradually. Even though large scale production of stereo-specific amino acids by fermentation was initiated with the isolation of l -glutamic acid overproducer strain in 1957, but due to several drawbacks, l -methionine fermentation in large scale was not successfully initiated. In the present study, isolation, molecular characterization as well as strain improvement have been done for l -methionine overproduction by a newly isolated bacterial strain from Sambalpur district, near Hirakud dam, Odisha. Based on the morphological and molecular characterization, the pale colored colony forming rod shaped, Gram negative, non-motile bacterium was identified as Alcaligenes faecalis strain. Mutational induction was done to develop l -methionine overproducers by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NTG) and UV rays. Finally, l -ethionine-resistant strain was developed to overcome feed-back inhibition. The mutant strain Alcaligenes faecalis ATCXT3624 appeared to be l -homoserine auxotroph in further studies. The strain could produce 20.1 ± 0.32 mg l -methionine/mL in subsequent submerged fermentation before optimization of culture conditions. Phosphorus-rich biochar (PBC) has been extensively studied due to its significant adsorption effect on U(VI). However, the release of phosphorus from PBC into solution decreases its adsorption performance and reusability and causes phosphorus pollution of water. In this study, Alcaligenes faecalis (A. faecalis) was loaded on PBC to produce a novel biocomposite (A/PBC). After adsorption equilibrium, phosphorus released into solution from PBC was 2.32 mg/L, while it decreased to 0.34 mg/L from A/PBC (p < 0.05). The U(VI) removal ratio of A/PBC reached nearly 100%, which is 13.08% higher than that of PBC (p < 0.05), and it decreased only by 1.98% after 5 cycles. When preparing A/PBC, A. faecalis converted soluble phosphate into insoluble metaphosphate minerals and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). And A. faecalis cells accumulated through these metabolites and formed biofilm attached to the PBC surface. The adsorption of metal cations on phosphate further contributed to phosphorus fixation in the biofilm. During U(VI) adsorption by A/PBC, A. faecalis synthesize EPS and metaphosphate minerals by using the internal components of PBC, thus increasing the abundance of acidic functional groups and promoting U(VI) adsorption. Pseudoazurin from the denitrifying bacterium Alcaligenes faecalis ( AfPAz) is a blue copper protein and functions as an electron donor to copper-containing nitrite reductase (CuNIR). Conventionally, AfPAz has been crystallized using highly concentrated ammonium sulfate as a precipitant. Here, a needle-like crystal of AfPAz grown in a solution containing a macromolecular precipitant, polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG 8000), is reported. The crystal belonged to space group P61, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 68.7, c = 94.2 Å. The structure has been determined and refined at 2.6 Å resolution. The asymmetric unit contained two AfPAz molecules contacting each other on negatively charged surfaces. The molecular packing of the crystal showed a right-handed double-helical arrangement of AfPAz molecules and hence of blue copper sites. Diabetic foot infections are an important cause of morbidity. In humans, Fusarium causes external infections. A male obese patient at the age of 56 who had been getting treatment in various clinics due to ulceration and lymphedema. Treatment started with tigecycline 50 mg vial 2x1. Alcaligenes faecalis and Proteus vulgaris reproduced. Tigecycline treatment was stopped on the 4th day and piperacillin/tazobactam 4,5 gr vial 3x1 and liposomal amphotericin B 3 mg/kg/day were initiated. In direct microscopic examination, hypes were seen and Fusarium spp. reproduction was detected. Liposomal amphotericin treatment was stopped on the 15th day and voriconazole 200 mg tb po 2x1 was initiated. At the end of one month, the lesions were regressed entirely. It should not be forgotten that despite its scarcity, fungus factors might give rise to diabetic foot infections and patients should be evaluated in terms of fungus infections. Nitrogen and organic carbon are major pollutants in wastewater causing environmental problems. Alcaligenes faecalis strain NR, isolated from activated sludge, exhibited the ability to remove ammonium and organic carbon from wastewater simultaneously under sole aerobic conditions in batch culture. Changes in carbon type, C/N ratio, oxygen concentration and inorganic ions significantly affected the treatment efficiency. Furthermore, a continuous bioreactor, solely inoculated with A. faecalis strain NR, was conducted to assess its feasibility for simultaneous nitrogen and organic matter removal in a single aerated reactor. Approximately 66.7–78.3% of NH 4 + -N and 85.8–92.2% of TOC were removed by using synthetic wastewater with 150–200 mg/L of NH 4 + -N and 1350–2000 mg/L of TOC. Monospecies and mixed bacterial biofilms of Rhodococcus ruber gt1, Pseudomonas fluorescens C2, Alcaligenes faecalis 2, and Rh. erythropolis 11-2 were obtained during growth in presence of the carriers. The transformation of aliphatic and aromatic nitriles by the biofilms of nitrile-hydrolyzing bacteria, as well as the growth dynamics of Rh. ruber gt1 and P. fluorescens C2 biofilms and their resistance to toxic substrates and products of nitrile hydrolysis, were studied. It was shown that the P. fluorescens C2 biofilm mass and total ATP content reached the maxima after 1 day of growth, whereas Rh. ruber gt1 reached them after 3-4 days of cultivation. The biofilms of Rh. ruber gt1 and P. fluorescens C2 were more resistant to the effects of high concentrations of acrylamide and acrylonitrile and had a greater adaptive capacity than planktonic cells. The bacterial strain Alcaligenes faecalis B137W, which has antagonism against Rhizoctonia solani, was firstly screened out from an integrated rice-duck ecosystem field by the dual culture method. Morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics as well as the sequence of the 16S rDNA gene and phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain B137W, whose 16S rDNA sequence has been registered in Gene Bank (accession number KC199967). It belongs to Alcaligenes faecalis, and has high homology with the model strain Alcaligenes faecalis ATCC8750. This strain obtained one national patent from China: ZL201310305517.7. The fermented filtrate of B137W was used to test its inhibitory effect on fungal plant pathogens. The results showed that it has an inhibitory rate of 60.26% against Rhizoctonia solani within 48 h, without significant differences in the rate of validamycin. Sclerotium rolfsii is a highly aggressive pathogen that causes huge economic losses, especially in temperate climates. Alcaligenes faecalis , particularly in endophytic form, has rarely been used to control this fungus. In this study, endophytic Alcaligenes sp. strain BHU 12, BHU 16 (isolated from Abelmoschus esculentus leaf) and BHU M7 (isolated from Andrographis paniculata leaf) were reported to trigger a wide range of host defenses in Okra plant against the collar-rot pathogen S. rolfsii . Endophytic colonization of the strains in ten days old plants was assessed through re-isolation of the rif-tagged strains on rifampicin augmented nutrient agar media. The ability of the endophytic strains to induce systemic defense responses in above-ground organs was assessed by collecting leaf tissues of the Okra plants grown under non-gnotobiotic conditions at different time intervals post seedling bacterization with the endophytic biocontrol agents. The pathogen challenged unprimed plants exhibited flaccidity of the stem and leaves at 48 h post infection (hpi) in contrast to the bioprimed and challenged plants. Biochemical and histochemical analyses explained the above phenomenon as activation of phyto-peroxidases leading to an increased metabolism of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), accompanied by activation of the phenylpropanoid network and a subsequent enhancement in plant phenolics. Interestingly, though the maximum increase in the defense pathways was observed in treatments with native endophytes of Okra plant, yet the enhancement in antioxidant pathway due to A. paniculata borne endophytes was also quite significant. Thus, this work clearly demonstrates how Okra plants respond to the “non-hostile” colonization of bacterial endophytes and how induced defense response can contribute to the biocontrol activity of the endophytic strains. The occurrence of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in aquatic environment is a health concern. The presence of SMX significantly inhibited the laccase activity of Pycnoporus sanguineus with a lower removal efficiency of SMX. Although a laccase system with 2,20-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) eliminated 100% SMX within 6 h, ABTS might cause an environmental issue. An alternative to SMX elimination is the coculture of Alcaligenes faecalis and P. sanguineus . The SMX removal efficiency at 48 h under the coculture with vitamins was higher than that under their pure culture alone, indicating that a coculture was more efficient in eliminating SMX than a pure culture. Only 1% SMX was detected in mycelia, indicating that SMX elimination is achieved primarily through biotransformation rather than adsorption. Laccase production by the coculture effectively inhibited the accumulations of N4-acetyl-SMX and N-hydroxy-SMX and alleviated the cytotoxicity of SMX transformation products. Understanding the interaction between microorganisms and fluid dynamics is important for aquatic ecosystems, though only sporadic attention has been focused on this topic in the past. In this study, particular attention was paid to the phenol-degrading bacterial strains Microbacterium oxydans LY1 and Alcaligenes faecalis LY2 subjected to controlled fluid flow under laboratory conditions. These two strains were found to be able to degrade phenols over a concentration range from 50 to 500 mg/L under different turbulence conditions ranging from 0 to 250 rpm. The time it took to reach total phenol degradation decreased when the turbulence was increased in both strains, with increasing energy dissipation rates ranging from 0.110 to 6.241 W/kg, corresponding to changes in the bacterial diffusive sublayer thickness ( δ) and enhanced oxygen uptake. Moreover, the maximum specific growth rates of the two strains also increased with the enhancement of turbulence. A model integrating growth inhibition and fluid motion was proposed based on the self-inhibition Haldane model by introducing a turbulence parameter, α. The resulting modified Haldane model was designed to include fluid motion as a variable in the quantification of the physiological responses of microorganisms. For the efficient treatment of sludge accumulated on a rainbow trout farm, two novel strains were isolated that possessed the ability for acidogenic digestion. The strains were identified as Alcaligenes faecalis HCB2-A1 and Alcaligenes faecalis A2, respectively, and there was synergism between the two strains. Acidogenic digestions using the mixed culture of the two isolates were performed on various sludge mixtures under examinations of changes in major reaction parameters. Among the sludge mixtures, the most stable acidogenic digestion was observed on 1:1 mixture of primary and secondary sludge. During this acidogenesis, pH and ORP dropped to 6.5 and -274 mV within 1 day and then increased steadily. At the same time total solids, COD, and total nitrogen were reduced 58, 79.3 and 42.7%, respectively, with the COD removal rate of 13,017 mg/L/day. The C: N ratio changed from 27:1 to 10:1 as the sludge was digested, and total volatile fatty acids of 6065.3 mg/L was produced for 7 days. The overapplication of endosulfan on crops has resulted in the widespread contamination of soil. In this study, we examine the potential for bioremediation of the bacteria strain Alcaligenes faecalis JBW4 in degrading endsosulfan in soils. Bacteria were inoculated into sterilized and non-sterilized soils (Argi-Udic Ferrosols and Hapli-Udic Isohumosols) spiked with endosulfan. The results obtained from polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis indicate that JBW4 colonized Argi-Udic Ferrosols and Hapli-Udic Isohumosols successfully. The degradation efficiencies of α and β isomers of endosulfan by JBW4 were higher in Hapli-Udic Isohumosols than in Argi-Udic Ferrosols, and α and β isomers were degraded by 100.0 and 69.8%, respectively. In addition, detected endosulfan metabolites were either endosulfan ether and endosulfan lactone. Results of the single-cell gel electrophoresis assay showed that the toxicity of endosulfan and its metabolites in Hapli-Udic Isohumosols decreased after 77 days when compared to those in Argi-Udic Ferrosols after degradation by JBW4. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), an extensively prescribed or administered antibiotic pharmaceutical product, is usually detected in aquatic environments, because of its incomplete metabolism and elimination. This study investigated the effects of exogenous cofactors on the bioremoval and biotransformation of SMX by Alcaligenes faecalis . High concentration (100 mg·L − 1 ) of exogenous vitamin C (VC), vitamin B6 (VB6) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) enhanced SMX bioremoval, while the additions of vitamin B2 (VB2) and vitamin B12 (VB12) did not significantly alter the SMX removal efficiency. Globally, cellular growth of A. faecalis and SMX removal both initially increased and then gradually decreased, indicating that SMX bioremoval is likely dependent on the primary biomass activity of A. faecalis . The decreases in the SMX removal efficiency indicated that some metabolites of SMX might be transformed into parent compound at the last stage of incubation. Two transformation products of SMX, N -hydroxy sulfamethoxazole (HO-SMX) and N 4 -acetyl sulfamethoxazole (Ac-SMX), were identified by a high-performance liquid chromatograph coupled with mass spectrometer. High concentrations of VC, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydrogen (NADH, 7.1 mg·L − 1 ), and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD + , 6.6 mg·L − 1 ), and low concentrations of reduced glutathione (GSH, 0.1 and 10 mg·L − 1 ) and VB2 (1 mg·L − 1 ) remarkably increased the formation of HO-SMX, while VB12 showed opposite effects on HO-SMX formation. In addition, low concentrations of GSH and NADH enhanced Ac-SMX formation by the addition of A. faecalis , whereas cofactors (VC, VB2, VB12, NAD + , and GSSG) had no obvious impact on the formation of Ac-SMX compared with the controls. The levels of Ac-SMX were stable when biomass of A. faecalis gradually decreased, indicating the direct effect of biomass on the formation of Ac-SMX by A. faecalis . In sum, these results help us understand the roles played by exogenous cofactors in eliminating SMX by A. faecalis and provide potential strategies for improving SMX biodegradation. In order to study enzymatic degradation characteristics of nicosulfuron by Alcaligenes faecalis ZWS11, extracellular, intracellular crude enzymes and cell debris were extracted from strain ZWS11 by methods of acetone precipitation, ultrasonic fragmentation and centrifuge separation. The enzyme activity of the extraction from ZWS11 was systematic studied under laboratory conditions. The results showed that the enzyme activity was high when the ratio of fermentation broth and acetone was 1:3 (V/V). At the presence of extracellular, intracellular crude enzymes and cell debris, the average degradation rates of nicosulfuron (24.9 μmol/L) were 87.4%, 16.9% and 17.4%, respectively. The degradation capability was significantly different between the extracellular enzymes and intracellular crude enzymes or cell debris (P<0..05), which suggested that it was the extracellular enzymes that catalyzed the degradation of nicosulfuron. The optimal condition for enzymatic degradation of nicosulfuron were as follows:30 min of reaction time, pH 6.0 and 35℃; more than 80% of nicosulfuron was degraded by extracellular enzymes under this condition. Moreover, high degradation rates (>60%) were achieved when the pH ranged from 4.0 to 9.0, and temperature ranged from 35℃ to 70℃, which demonstrated that the degrading enzymes had a broad pH tolerance and a good thermal stability. The activity of degrading enzymes could be inhibited in the presence of different concentrations of SDS and PMSF. The results provided scientific basis for further studies on the large-scale production of nicosulfuron-degrading enzymes and the bioremediation of nicosulfuron-contaminated soil. The quantum of marine fish wastes produced by fish processing industries has necessitated to search new methods for its disposal. Hence, this study is focused on production and purification of halophilic organic solvent tolerant protease (HOSP) from marine Alcaligenes faecalis APCMST-MKW6 using marine shell wastes as substrate. The candidate bacterium was isolated from the marine sediment of Manakudi coast and identified as A. faecalis APCMST-MKW6. The purified protease showed 16.39-fold purity, 70.34 U/mg specific activity with 21.67 % yield. The molecular weight of the purified alkaline protease was 49 kDa. This purified protease registered maximum activity at pH 9 and it was stable between pH 8-9 after 1.30 h of incubation. The optimum temperature registered was 60 °C and it was stable between 50 and 60 °C even after 1.30 h of incubation. This enzyme also showed maximum activity at 20 % NaCl concentration. Further, manganese chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride and barium chloride influenced this enzyme activity remarkably and it was also found to be enhanced by many of the tested surfactants and solvents. The candidate bacterium effectively deproteinized the shrimp shell waste compared to the other tested crustaceans shell wastes and also attained maximum antioxidant activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both the enantiomers of 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-carboxylic acid are valuable chiral synthons for enantiospecific synthesis of therapeutic agents such as (S)-doxazosin mesylate, WB 4101, MKC 242, 2,3-dihydro-2-hydroxymethyl-1,4-benzodioxin, and N-[2,4-oxo-1,3-thiazolidin-3-yl]-2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-carboxamide. Pharmaceutical applications require these enantiomers in optically pure form. However, currently available methods suffer from one drawback or other, such as low efficiency, uncommon and not so easily accessible chiral resolving agent and less than optimal enantiomeric purity. Our interest in finding a biocatalyst for efficient production of enantiomerically pure 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-carboxylic acid lead us to discover an amidase activity from Alcaligenes faecalis subsp. parafaecalis, which was able to kinetically resolve 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-carboxyamide with E value of >200. Thus, at about 50% conversion, (R)-2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-carboxylic acid was produced in >99% e.e. The remaining amide had (S)-configuration and 99% e.e. The amide and acid were easily separated by aqueous (alkaline)-organic two phase extraction method. The same amidase was able to catalyse, albeit at much lower rate the hydrolysis of (S)-amide to (S)-acid without loss of e.e. The amidase activity was identified as indole-3-acetamide hydrolase (IaaH). IaaH is known to catalyse conversion of indole-3-acetamide (IAM) to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), which is phytohormone of auxin class and is widespread among plants and bacteria that inhabit plant rhizosphere. IaaH exhibited high activity for 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-carboxamide, which was about 65% compared to its natural substrate, indole-3-acetamide. The natural substrate for IaaH indole-3-acetamide shared, at least in part a similar bicyclic structure with 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-carboxamide, which may account for high activity of enzyme towards this un-natural substrate. ( R)-(−)-Mandelic acid ( R-MA) is widely used both as a versatile intermediate for pharmaceuticals and a resolving agent in chiral resolution processes. In the current study, to improve the stability of operation, recombinant Escherichia coli cells expressing nitrilase from Alcaligenes faecalis were immobilized for the enantioselective hydrolysis of ( R, S)-mandelonitrile to R-MA. Different immobilization methods including entrapment matrices, entrapment matrices cross-linked by cross-linking and polymerization agents, and direct cross-linking cells using glutaraldehyde (GA) or bionic silicon were investigated. To facilitate industrial solid-liquid separation, the direct cross-linking recombinant E. coli cells using diatomite/GA/polyethyleneimine with 135.95% relative activity compared with free cells was chosen using water as the reaction medium. The operational stability of the immobilized cells was obviously superior to that of free cells, without significant activity loss after 28 cycles of batch reaction and the successive production of R-MA could reach 1.88 M. Moreover, the immobilized cells showed good storage stability with about 52% relative activity after storing for 30 days at 4 °C. The feasibility of simultaneous biodegradation of phenol and ammonium in phenol-rich wastewater was evaluated in a reusable system, which contained macroporous adsorption resin and Alcaligenes faecalis strain WY-01. In the system, up to 6000 mg/L phenol could be completely degraded by WY-01; meanwhile, 99.03 ± 3.95% of ammonium was removed from the initial concentration of 384 mg/L. This is the first study to show the capability of single strain in simultaneous removal of ammonium and phenol in wastewater containing such high concentrations of phenol. Moreover, the resin was regenerated during the biodegradation process without any additional manipulations, indicating the system was reusable. Furthermore, enzyme assay, gene expression patterns, HPLC–MS and gas chromatography analysis confirmed that phenol biodegradation accompanied with aerobic nitrifier denitrification process. The substrate specificity of 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase from Alcaligenes faecalis with a non-native substrate, levulinic acid, was studied by analysis of the enzyme-substrate molecular interactions. The relation between structural and kinetic parameters was investigated considering the catalytic mechanism of the enzyme. The effects of key positive mutations (H144L, H144L/W187F) on the catalytic activity of the enzyme were studied by employing a surface analysis of its interatomic contacts between the enzyme and substrate atoms. The results revealed that the alteration of hydrogen bond network and rearrangement of the hydrophobic interactions between the active site and substrate molecule are the key structural basis for the change of the substrate specificity of 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase toward levulinic acid. The goal of this study was to evaluate the suitability of growth models to fit the growth data of metal resistant bacteria. The growth data obtained for chromium resistant isolates namely Bacillus cereus VITSH1 and Alcaligenes faecalis VITSIM2 cultured on nutrient agar amended with increasing concentrations Cr3+ Cu2+ and Cd2+ were fit into growth models. The traditional methods for enumerating bacteria are not instantaneous, therefore necessitates mathematical models to study the behavior of microbes in a specific experimental condition. The logistic and Gompertz models were applied to obtain the predicted microbial numbers and to evaluate the suitability of the models to study the growth pattern in metal stress conditions. The logistic model fit the experimental data and was found to be superior to the Gompertz model. The potential of endophytic bacteria to act as biofertilizers and bioprotectants has been demonstrated, and considerable progress has been made in explaining their role in plant protection. In the present study, three endophytic bacterial strains (BHU 12, BHU 16 isolated from the leaves of Abelmoschus esculentus, and BHU M7 isolated from the leaves of Andrographis paniculata) were used which displayed high sequence similarity to Alcaligenes faecalis. The biofilm formation ability of these endophytic strains in the presence of okra root exudates confirms their chemotactic ability, an initial step for successful endophytic colonization. Further, reinoculation of spontaneous rifampicin-tagged mutants into okra seedlings revealed a CFU count above 10 cells g of all three endophytic strains in root samples during the first 15 days of plant growth. The CFU count increased up to 10 by 30 days of plant growth, followed by a gradual decline to approximately 10 cells g at 45 days of plant growth. Systemic endophytic colonization was further supported by 2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining and fluorescence imaging of ds- RED expressing conjugants of the endophytic strains. The strains were further assessed for their plausible in vivo and in vitro plant growth-promoting and antagonistic abilities. Our results demonstrated that the endophytic strains BHU 12, BHU 16, and BHU M7 augmented plant biomass by greater than 40 %. Root and shoot lengths of okra plants when primed by BHU 12, BHU 16, and BHU M7 increased up to 34 and 14.5 %, respectively. The endophytic isolates also exhibited significant in vitro antagonistic potential against the collar rot pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii. In summary, our results demonstrate excellent potential of the three endophytic bacterial strains as biofertilizers and biocontrol agents, indicating the possibility for use in sustainable agriculture. This research examined the potential mitigation of NH 3 emissions from dairy manure via an enhanced aerobic bio-treatment with bacterium Alcaligenes faecalis strain No. 4. The studies were conducted in aerated batch reactors using air and pure oxygen. Aeration with air and oxygen removed approximately 40% and 100% total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN), respectively. Intermittent oxygenation (every 2 or 4 h) reduced oxygen consumption by 95%, while attaining nearly identical TAN removal to continuous aeration. The results revealed that adequate oxygen supply and supplementing dairy wastewater with carbon are essential for this bioprocess. Based on the nitrogen mass balance, only 4% of TAN was released as NH 3 gas, while the majority was retained in either the microbial biomass (58%) or converted to nitrogen gas (36%). The mass balance results reveal high potential for environmentally friendly bio-treatment of dairy wastewater using A. faecalis strain No. 4 with respect to NH 3 emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Root knot nematodes (RKNs) are the world's most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs), and they can infect almost all crops. At present, harmful chemical nematicides are applied to control RKNs. Using microbial nematicides has been proposed as a better management strategy than chemical control. In this study, we describe a novel nematicidal bacterium named Alcaligenes faecalis ZD02. A. faecalis ZD02 was isolated from Caenorhabditis elegans cadavers and has nematostatic and nematicidal activity, as confirmed by C. elegans growth assay and life span assay. In addition, A. faecalis ZD02 fermentation broth showed toxicity against C. elegans and Meloidogyne incognita. To identify the nematicidal virulence factor, the genome of strain ZD02 was sequenced. By comparing all of the predicted proteins of strain ZD02 to reported nematicidal virulence factors, we determined that an extracellular serine protease (Esp) has potential to be a nematicidal virulence factor, which was confirmed by bioassay on C. elegans and M. incognita. Using C. elegans as the target model, we found that both A. faecalis ZD02 and the virulence factor Esp can damage the intestines of C. elegans.
