151. GenAudit: Fixing Factual Errors in Language Model Outputs with Evidence

Abstract: LLMs can generate factually incorrect statements even when provided access to reference documents. Such errors can be dangerous in high-stakes applications (e.g., document-grounded QA for healthcare or finance). We present GenAudit -- a tool intended to assist fact-checking LLM responses for document-grounded tasks. GenAudit suggests edits to the LLM response by revising or removing claims that are not supported by the reference document, and also presents evidence from the reference for facts that do appear to have support. We train models to execute these tasks, and design an interactive interface to present suggested edits and evidence to users. Comprehensive evaluation by human raters shows that GenAudit can detect errors in 8 different LLM outputs when summarizing documents from diverse domains. To ensure that most errors are flagged by the system, we propose a method that can increase the error recall while minimizing impact on precision. 152. Optimal Dynamic Treatment Regime Estimation in the Presence of Nonadherence

Abstract: Dynamic treatment regimes (DTRs) are sequences of functions that formalize the process of precision medicine. DTRs take as input patient information and output treatment recommendations. A major focus of the DTR literature has been on the estimation of optimal DTRs, the sequences of decision rules that result in the best outcome in expectation, across the complete population were they to be applied. While there is a rich literature on optimal DTR estimation, to date there has been minimal consideration of the impacts of nonadherence on these estimation procedures. Nonadherence refers to any process through that an individual's prescribed treatment does not match their true treatment. We explore the impacts of nonadherence and demonstrate that generally, when nonadherence is ignored, suboptimal regimes will be estimated. In light of these findings we propose a method for estimating optimal DTRs in the presence of nonadherence. The resulting estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal, with a double robustness property. Using simulations we demonstrate the reliability of these results, and illustrate comparable performance between the proposed estimation procedure adjusting for the impacts of nonadherence and estimators that are computed on data without nonadherence.

153. What Evidence Do Language Models Find Convincing?

Abstract: Retrieval-augmented language models are being increasingly tasked with subjective, contentious, and conflicting queries such as "is aspartame linked to cancer". To resolve these ambiguous queries, one must search through a large range of websites and consider "which, if any, of this evidence do I find convincing?". In this work, we study how LLMs answer this question. In particular, we construct ConflictingQA, a dataset that pairs controversial queries with a series of real-world evidence documents that contain different facts (e.g., quantitative results), argument styles (e.g., appeals to authority), and answers (Yes or No). We use this dataset to perform sensitivity and counterfactual analyses to explore which text features most affect LLM predictions. Overall, we find that current models rely heavily on the relevance of a website to the query, while largely ignoring stylistic features that humans find important such as whether a text contains scientific references or is written with a neutral tone. Taken together, these results highlight the importance of RAG corpus quality (e.g., the need to filter misinformation), and possibly even a shift in how LLMs are trained to better align with human judgements., Comment: ACL 2024 (Main)

154. FactPICO: Factuality Evaluation for Plain Language Summarization of Medical Evidence

Abstract: Plain language summarization with LLMs can be useful for improving textual accessibility of technical content. But how factual are these summaries in a high-stakes domain like medicine? This paper presents FactPICO, a factuality benchmark for plain language summarization of medical texts describing randomized controlled trials (RCTs), which are the basis of evidence-based medicine and can directly inform patient treatment. FactPICO consists of 345 plain language summaries of RCT abstracts generated from three LLMs (i.e., GPT-4, Llama-2, and Alpaca), with fine-grained evaluation and natural language rationales from experts. We assess the factuality of critical elements of RCTs in those summaries: Populations, Interventions, Comparators, Outcomes (PICO), as well as the reported findings concerning these. We also evaluate the correctness of the extra information (e.g., explanations) added by LLMs. Using FactPICO, we benchmark a range of existing factuality metrics, including the newly devised ones based on LLMs. We find that plain language summarization of medical evidence is still challenging, especially when balancing between simplicity and factuality, and that existing metrics correlate poorly with expert judgments on the instance level., Comment: Preprint has been updated to match the final revision for ACL 2024

155. Towards Reducing Diagnostic Errors with Interpretable Risk Prediction

Abstract: Many diagnostic errors occur because clinicians cannot easily access relevant information in patient Electronic Health Records (EHRs). In this work we propose a method to use LLMs to identify pieces of evidence in patient EHR data that indicate increased or decreased risk of specific diagnoses; our ultimate aim is to increase access to evidence and reduce diagnostic errors. In particular, we propose a Neural Additive Model to make predictions backed by evidence with individualized risk estimates at time-points where clinicians are still uncertain, aiming to specifically mitigate delays in diagnosis and errors stemming from an incomplete differential. To train such a model, it is necessary to infer temporally fine-grained retrospective labels of eventual "true" diagnoses. We do so with LLMs, to ensure that the input text is from before a confident diagnosis can be made. We use an LLM to retrieve an initial pool of evidence, but then refine this set of evidence according to correlations learned by the model. We conduct an in-depth evaluation of the usefulness of our approach by simulating how it might be used by a clinician to decide between a pre-defined list of differential diagnoses.

156. Rapid on-demand generation of thermal states in superconducting quantum circuits

Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate the fast generation of thermal states of a transmon using a single-junction quantum-circuit refrigerator (QCR) as an in-situ-tunable environment. Through single-shot readout, we monitor the transmon up to its third-excited state, assessing population distributions controlled by QCR drive pulses. Whereas cooling can be achieved in the weak-drive regime, high-amplitude pulses can generate Boltzmann-distributed populations from a temperature of 110 mK up to 500 mK within 100 ns. As we propose in our work, this fast and efficient temperature control provides an appealing opportunity to demonstrate a quantum heat engine. Our results also pave the way for efficient dissipative state preparation and for reducing the circuit depth in thermally assisted quantum algorithms and quantum annealing.

157. Evaluating the Factuality of Zero-shot Summarizers Across Varied Domains

Abstract: Recent work has shown that large language models (LLMs) are capable of generating summaries zero-shot (i.e., without explicit supervision) that, under human assessment, are often comparable or even preferred to manually composed reference summaries. However, this prior work has focussed almost exclusively on evaluating news article summarization. How do zero-shot summarizers perform in other (potentially more specialized) domains? In this work we evaluate zero-shot generated summaries across specialized domains including biomedical articles, and legal bills (in addition to standard news benchmarks for reference). We focus especially on the factuality of outputs. We acquire annotations from domain experts to identify inconsistencies in summaries and systematically categorize these errors. We analyze whether the prevalence of a given domain in the pretraining corpus affects extractiveness and faithfulness of generated summaries of articles in this domain. We release all collected annotations to facilitate additional research toward measuring and realizing factually accurate summarization, beyond news articles. Abstract: Extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs) exhibit large equivalent widths (EW) in their rest-optical emission lines ([OIII]$\lambda5007$ or H$\alpha$ rest-frame EW$ > 750\r{A}$) which can be tied to a recent upturn in star formation rate, due to the sensitivity of the nebular line emission and the rest-optical continuum to young ($<10$Myr) and evolved stellar populations, respectively. By studying a sample of 85 star forming galaxies (SFGs), spanning the redshift and magnitude interval $3 $ M$_{UV}>-21$, in the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) with NIRSpec/prism spectroscopy, we determine that SFGs initiate an EELG phase when entering a significant burst of star formation, with the highest EWs observed in EELGs with the youngest luminosity-weighted ages ($<5$ Myr old) and the highest burst intensity (those with the greatest excess between their current and long-term average SFR). We spectroscopically confirm that a greater proportion of SFGs are in an EELG phase at high redshift in our UV-selected sample ($61\pm4\%$ in our $z>5.7$ high-redshift bin, compared to $23^{+4}_{-1}\%$ in our lowest-redshift bin $35.7$ have observed Lyman-$\alpha$ emission, potentially lying within large ionised regions. The high detection rate of Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters in our EELG selection suggests that the physical conditions associated with entering an EELG phase also promote the escape of Lyman-$\alpha$ photons., Comment: 34 pages, 25 figures

159. InfoLossQA: Characterizing and Recovering Information Loss in Text Simplification

Abstract: Text simplification aims to make technical texts more accessible to laypeople but often results in deletion of information and vagueness. This work proposes InfoLossQA, a framework to characterize and recover simplification-induced information loss in form of question-and-answer (QA) pairs. Building on the theory of Question Under Discussion, the QA pairs are designed to help readers deepen their knowledge of a text. We conduct a range of experiments with this framework. First, we collect a dataset of 1,000 linguist-curated QA pairs derived from 104 LLM simplifications of scientific abstracts of medical studies. Our analyses of this data reveal that information loss occurs frequently, and that the QA pairs give a high-level overview of what information was lost. Second, we devise two methods for this task: end-to-end prompting of open-source and commercial language models, and a natural language inference pipeline. With a novel evaluation framework considering the correctness of QA pairs and their linguistic suitability, our expert evaluation reveals that models struggle to reliably identify information loss and applying similar standards as humans at what constitutes information loss., Comment: Accepted at ACL 2024 (main conference)

160. Fusion It is time to color outside the lines

Abstract: There has been some good news, and some bad news in the controlled fusion community recently. The good news is that the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has recently produced a burning plasma. It succeeded on several of its shots where ~1.5-2 megajoules from its laser (National Ignition Facility, or NIF) has generated ~ 1.3-3 megajoules of fusion products. The highest ratio of fusion energy to laser energy it achieved, defined as its Q, was 1.5 at the time of this writing. While LLNL is sponsored by nuclear stockpile stewardship, this author sees a likely path from their result to fusion for energy for the world, a path using a very different laser and a very different target configuration. The bad news is that the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER) has continued to stumble on more and more delays and cost overruns, as its capital cost has mushroomed from ~$5 billion to ~ $25B. This paper argues that the American fusion effort, for energy for the civilian economy, should switch its emphasis not only from magnetic fusion to inertial fusion but should also take much more seriously fusion breeding. Over the next few decades, the world might well be setting up more and more thermal nuclear reactors, and these might need fuel which only fusion breeders can supply. 161. Many-excitation removal of a transmon qubit using a single-junction quantum-circuit refrigerator and a two-tone microwave drive

Abstract: Achieving fast and precise initialization of qubits is a critical requirement for the successful operation of quantum computers. The combination of engineered environments with all-microwave techniques has recently emerged as a promising approach for the reset of superconducting quantum devices. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the utilization of a single-junction quantum-circuit refrigerator (QCR) for an expeditious removal of several excitations from a transmon qubit. The QCR is indirectly coupled to the transmon through a resonator in the dispersive regime, constituting a carefully engineered environmental spectrum for the transmon. Using single-shot readout, we observe excitation stabilization times down to roughly $500$ ns, a $20$-fold speedup with QCR and a simultaneous two-tone drive addressing the $e$-$f$ and $f0$-$g1$ transitions of the system. Our results are obtained at a $48$-mK fridge temperature and without postselection, fully capturing the advantage of the protocol for the short-time dynamics and the drive-induced detrimental asymptotic behavior in the presence of relatively hot other baths of the transmon. We validate our results with a detailed Liouvillian model truncated up to the three-excitation subspace, from which we estimate the performance of the protocol in optimized scenarios, such as cold transmon baths and fine-tuned driving frequencies. These results pave the way for optimized reset of quantum-electric devices using engineered environments and for dissipation-engineered state preparation., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

162. Question answering systems for health professionals at the point of care -- a systematic review

Abstract: Objective: Question answering (QA) systems have the potential to improve the quality of clinical care by providing health professionals with the latest and most relevant evidence. However, QA systems have not been widely adopted. This systematic review aims to characterize current medical QA systems, assess their suitability for healthcare, and identify areas of improvement. Materials and methods: We searched PubMed, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, ACL Anthology and forward and backward citations on 7th February 2023. We included peer-reviewed journal and conference papers describing the design and evaluation of biomedical QA systems. Two reviewers screened titles, abstracts, and full-text articles. We conducted a narrative synthesis and risk of bias assessment for each study. We assessed the utility of biomedical QA systems. Results: We included 79 studies and identified themes, including question realism, answer reliability, answer utility, clinical specialism, systems, usability, and evaluation methods. Clinicians' questions used to train and evaluate QA systems were restricted to certain sources, types and complexity levels. No system communicated confidence levels in the answers or sources. Many studies suffered from high risks of bias and applicability concerns. Only 8 studies completely satisfied any criterion for clinical utility, and only 7 reported user evaluations. Most systems were built with limited input from clinicians. Discussion: While machine learning methods have led to increased accuracy, most studies imperfectly reflected real-world healthcare information needs. 163. Open-Source, Cost-Aware Kinematically Feasible Planning for Mobile and Surface Robotics

Abstract: This paper introduces the Smac Planner, an openly available search-based planning framework with multiple algorithm implementations including 2D-A*, Hybrid-A*, and State Lattice planners. This work is motivated by the lack of performant and available feasible planners for mobile and surface robotics research. This paper contains three main contributions. First, it briefly describes a minimal open-source software framework where search-based planners may be easily added. Further, this paper characterizes new variations on the feasible planners - dubbed Cost-Aware - specific to mobile roboticist's needs. This fills the gap of missing kinematically feasible implementations suitable for academic, extension, and deployed use. Finally, we provide baseline benchmarking against other standard planning frameworks. Smac Planner has further significance by becoming the standard open-source planning system within ROS 2's Nav2 framework which powers thousands of robots in research and industry.

164. Co-Clustering Multi-View Data Using the Latent Block Model

Abstract: The Latent Block Model (LBM) is a prominent model-based co-clustering method, returning parametric representations of each block cluster and allowing the use of well-grounded model selection methods. The LBM, while adapted in literature to handle different feature types, cannot be applied to datasets consisting of multiple disjoint sets of features, termed views, for a common set of observations. In this work, we introduce the multi-view LBM, extending the LBM method to multi-view data, where each view marginally follows an LBM. In the case of two views, the dependence between them is captured by a cluster membership matrix, and we aim to learn the structure of this matrix. We develop a likelihood-based approach in which parameter estimation uses a stochastic EM algorithm integrating a Gibbs sampler, and an ICL criterion is derived to determine the number of row and column clusters in each view. To motivate the application of multi-view methods, we extend recent work developing hypothesis tests for the null hypothesis that clusters of observations in each view are independent of each other. The testing procedure is integrated into the model estimation strategy. Furthermore, we introduce a penalty scheme to generate sparse row clusterings. We verify the performance of the developed algorithm using synthetic datasets, and provide guidance for optimal parameter selection. Finally, the multi-view co-clustering method is applied to a complex genomics dataset, and is shown to provide new insights for high-dimension multi-view problems.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Pegunigalsidase alfa is a PEGylated α-galactosidase A enzyme replacement therapy. BALANCE (NCT02795676) assessed non-inferiority of pegunigalsidase alfa versus agalsidase beta in adults with Fabry disease with an annualised estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) slope more negative than -2 mL/min/1.73 m2/year who had received agalsidase beta for ≥1 year. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned 2:1 to receive 1 mg/kg pegunigalsidase alfa or agalsidase beta every 2 weeks for 2 years. The primary efficacy analysis assessed non-inferiority based on median annualised eGFR slope differences between treatment arms. RESULTS: Seventy-seven patients received either pegunigalsidase alfa (n=52) or agalsidase beta (n=25). At baseline, mean (range) age was 44 (18-60) years, 47 (61%) patients were male, median eGFR was 74.5 mL/min/1.73 m2 and median (range) eGFR slope was -7.3 (-30.5, 6.3) mL/min/1.73 m2/year. At 2 years, the difference between median eGFR slopes was -0.36 mL/min/1.73 m2/year, meeting the prespecified non-inferiority margin. Minimal changes were observed in lyso-Gb3 concentrations in both treatment arms at 2 years. Proportions of patients experiencing treatment-related adverse events and mild or moderate infusion-related reactions were similar in both groups, yet exposure-adjusted rates were 3.6-fold and 7.8-fold higher, respectively, with agalsidase beta than pegunigalsidase alfa. At the end of the study, neutralising antibodies were detected in 7 out of 47 (15%) pegunigalsidase alfa-treated patients and 6 out of 23 (26%) agalsidase beta-treated patients. There were no deaths. CONCLUSIONS: Based on rate of eGFR decline over 2 years, pegunigalsidase alfa was non-inferior to agalsidase beta. Pegunigalsidase alfa had lower rates of treatment-emergent adverse events and mild or moderate infusion-related reactions. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT02795676.

Abstract: In many organisms, most notably Drosophila, homologous chromosomes associate in somatic cells, a phenomenon known as somatic pairing, which takes place without double strand breaks or strand invasion, thus requiring some other mechanism for homologs to recognize each other. Several studies have suggested a "specific button" model, in which a series of distinct regions in the genome, known as buttons, can associate with each other, mediated by different proteins that bind to these different regions. Here, we use computational modeling to evaluate an alternative "button barcode" model, in which there is only one type of recognition site or adhesion button, present in many copies in the genome, each of which can associate with any of the others with equal affinity. In this model, buttons are nonuniformly distributed, such that alignment of a chromosome with its correct homolog, compared with a nonhomolog, is energetically favored; since to achieve nonhomologous alignment, chromosomes would be required to mechanically deform in order to bring their buttons into mutual register. By simulating randomly generated nonuniform button distributions, many highly effective button barcodes can be easily found, some of which achieve virtually perfect pairing fidelity. This model is consistent with existing literature on the effect of translocations of different sizes on homolog pairing. We conclude that a button barcode model can attain highly specific homolog recognition, comparable to that seen in actual cells undergoing somatic homolog pairing, without the need for specific interactions. This model may have implications for how meiotic pairing is achieved.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Young adults have historically high levels of cannabis use at a time which coincides with emotional and cognitive development. Age of regular onset of cannabis use and sex at birth are hypothesized to influence the relationship between cannabis use and cognition. Here we investigated past 6-month cannabis use in relation to emotional and executive functioning. We further considered age of onset and sex in subgroup analyses. METHOD: Young adults (N = 225; ages 16-22) completed a substance use interview and cognitive battery, including the Emotional Word-Emotional Face Stroop and NIH toolbox executive functioning tasks. Linear regressions examined relationships between past 6-month cannabis use episodes and performance. Subgroup analyses investigated whether age of onset or sex impacted relationships. RESULTS: After correcting for multiple comparisons, greater past 6-month cannabis use episodes were related to poorer Emotional Stroop Congruent Accuracy (p = .0004, FDR-p = .002) and List Sorting Working Memory (p = .02, FDR-p = .10) performance. Younger age of regular use onset marginally related to lower Emotional Stroop Congruent Accuracy performance (p = .03, FDR-p = .13). There were no cannabis use by sex interactions on cognition. CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with prior findings, results suggest small reductions in cannabis-related performance in processing speed during emotional Stroop and working memory tasks. Age of onset was modestly related to Stroop performance, but not sex. Longitudinal studies which detail patterns of cannabis and other substance use are needed to better assess brain-behavior relationships and other factors (e.g., age of onset of regular use, sex) which could influence cannabis-related impairments in cognitive functioning.

Abstract: Abstract: A wide range of empirical scholarship has documented a partisan gap in health behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, but the political foundations and temporal dynamics of these partisan gaps remain poorly understood. Using an original six-wave individual panel study (n = 3,000) of Americans throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, we show that at the individual level, partisan differences in health behavior grew rapidly in the early months of the pandemic and are explained almost entirely by individual support for or opposition to President Trump. Our results comprise powerful evidence that Trump support (or opposition), rather than ideology or simple partisan identity, explains partisan gaps in health behavior in the United States. In a time of populist resurgence around the world, public health efforts must consider the impact of charismatic authority in addition to entrenched partisanship.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Cranial neuropathies (CN) are a rare neuropsychiatric SLE (NPSLE) manifestation. Previous studies reported that antibodies to the kinesin family member 20B (KIF20B) (anti-KIF20B) protein were associated with idiopathic ataxia and CN. We assessed anti-KIF20B as a potential biomarker for NPSLE in an international SLE inception cohort. METHODS: Individuals fulfilling the revised 1997 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) SLE classification criteria were enrolled from 31 centres from 1999 to 2011 and followed annually in the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus International Collaborating Clinics inception cohort. Anti-KIF20B testing was performed on baseline (within 15 months of diagnosis or first annual visit) samples using an addressable laser bead immunoassay. Logistic regression (penalised maximum likelihood and adjusting for confounding variables) examined the association between anti-KIF20B and NPSLE manifestations (1999 ACR case definitions), including CN, occurring over the first 5 years of follow-up. RESULTS: Of the 1827 enrolled cohort members, baseline serum and 5 years of follow-up data were available on 795 patients who were included in this study: 29.8% were anti-KIF20B-positive, 88.7% female, and 52.1% White. The frequency of anti-KIF20B positivity differed only for those with CN (n=10) versus without CN (n=785) (70.0% vs 29.3%; OR 5.2, 95% CI 1.4, 18.5). Compared with patients without CN, patients with CN were more likely to fulfil the ACR haematological (90.0% vs 66.1%; difference 23.9%, 95% CI 5.0%, 42.8%) and ANA (100% vs 95.7%; difference 4.3%, 95% CI 2.9%, 5.8%) criteria. In the multivariate analysis adjusting for age at baseline, female, White race and ethnicity, and ACR haematological and ANA criteria, anti-KIF20B positivity remained associated with CN (OR 5.2, 95% CI 1.4, 19.1). CONCLUSION: Anti-KIF20B is a potential biomarker for SLE-related CN. Further studies are needed to examine how autoantibodies against KIF20B, which is variably expressed in a variety of neurological cells, contribute to disease pathogenesis.

Abstract: The forbidden number forb$(m,F)$, which denotes the maximum number of distinct columns in an $m$-rowed $(0,1)$-matrix with no submatrix that is a row and column permutation of $F$, has been widely studied in extremal set theory. Recently, this function was extended to $r$-matrices, whose entries lie in $\{0,1,\cdots,r-1\}$. forb$(m,r,F)$ is the maximum number of distinct columns in an $r$-matrix with no submatrix that is a row and column permutation of $F$. While forb$(m,F)$ is polynomial in $m$, forb$(m,r,F)$ is exponential for $r\geq 3$. Recently, forb$(m,r,F)$ was studied for some small $(0,1)$-matrices $F$, and exact values were determined in some cases. In this paper we study forb$(m,r,M)$ for $M=\begin{bmatrix}0&1\\0&1\\1&0\end{bmatrix}$, which is the smallest matrix for which this forbidden number is unknown. Interestingly, it turns out that this problem is closely linked with the following optimisation problem. For each triangle in the complete graph $K_m$, pick one of its edges. Let $m_e$ denote the number of times edge $e$ is picked. For each $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$, what is $H(m,\alpha)=\max\sum_{e\in E(K_m)}\alpha^{m_e}$? Abstract: Since its launch in 2013, the Gaia space telescope has provided precise measurements of the positions and magnitudes of over 1 billion stars. This has enabled extensive searches for stellar and sub-stellar companions through astrometric and radial velocity measurements. However, these surveys require a prior knowledge of any unresolved companion affecting the results which can be identified using photometry. In this work, Gaia's magnitude measurements are combined with near-infrared observations from 2MASS and WISE and simulation-based inference is applied to constrain astrophysical parameters and search for hidden companions. This method is first tested on simulated sets of binary stars before expanding to Gaia's non-single star catalogue. Using this test, a region is identified on the H-R diagram in which the method is the most accurate and all Gaia sources within that region are analysed. This analysis reproduces a known anti-correlation between metallicity and binary fraction. Finally, the method is applied to the nearby star cluster M67 and, using previous studies of the metallicity distribution, it is possible to improve constraints on binary fraction. From this the binary fraction in the cluster is calculated to vary from 30% in the outer cluster to 45% near the core. Abstract: M dwarfs are common host stars to exoplanets but often lack atmospheric abundance measurements. Late-M dwarfs are also good analogs to the youngest substellar companions, which share similar $T_{\rm eff}\sim2300-2800~K$. We present atmospheric analyses for the M7.5 companion HIP 55507 B and its K6V primary star with Keck/KPIC high-resolution ($R\sim35,000$) $K$ band spectroscopy. First, by including KPIC relative radial velocities between the primary and secondary in the orbit fit, we improve the dynamical mass precision by 60% and find $M_B=88.0_{-3.2}^{+3.4}$ $M_{\rm Jup}$, putting HIP 55507 B above the stellar-substellar boundary. We also find that HIP 55507 B orbits its K6V primary star with $a=38^{+4}_{-3}$ AU and $e=0.40\pm0.04$. From atmospheric retrievals of HIP 55507 B, we measure $\rm [C/H]=0.24\pm0.13$, $\rm [O/H]=0.15\pm0.13$, and $\rm C/O=0.67\pm0.04$. Moreover, we strongly detect $\rm ^{13}CO$ ($7.8\sigma$ significance) and tentatively detect $\rm H_2^{18}O$ ($3.7\sigma$ significance) in companion's atmosphere, and measure $\rm ^{12}CO/^{13}CO=98_{-22}^{+28}$ and $\rm H_2^{16}O/H_2^{18}O=240_{-80}^{+145}$ after accounting for systematic errors. From a simplified retrieval analysis of HIP 55507 A, we measure $\rm ^{12}CO/^{13}CO=79_{-16}^{+21}$ and $\rm C^{16}O/C^{18}O=288_{-70}^{+125}$ for the primary star. These results demonstrate that HIP 55507 A and B have consistent $\rm ^{12} C/^{13}C$ and $\rm ^{16}O/^{18}O$ to the $<1\sigma$ level, as expected for a chemically homogeneous binary system. Given the similar flux ratios and separations between HIP 55507 AB and systems with young, substellar companions, our results open the door to systematically measuring $\rm ^{13}CO$ and $\rm H_2^{18}O$ abundances in the atmospheres of substellar or even planetary-mass companions with similar spectral types., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 28 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: We introduce multi-slice reasoning, a new notion for single-view 3D reconstruction which challenges the current and prevailing belief that multi-view synthesis is the most natural conduit between single-view and 3D. Our key observation is that object slicing is more advantageous than altering views to reveal occluded structures. Specifically, slicing is more occlusion-revealing since it can peel through any occluders without obstruction. In the limit, i.e., with infinitely many slices, it is guaranteed to unveil all hidden object parts. We realize our idea by developing Slice3D, a novel method for single-view 3D reconstruction which first predicts multi-slice images from a single RGB image and then integrates the slices into a 3D model using a coordinate-based transformer network for signed distance prediction. The slice images can be regressed or generated, both through a U-Net based network. For the former, we inject a learnable slice indicator code to designate each decoded image into a spatial slice location, while the slice generator is a denoising diffusion model operating on the entirety of slice images stacked on the input channels. We conduct extensive evaluation against state-of-the-art alternatives to demonstrate superiority of our method, especially in recovering complex and severely occluded shape structures, amid ambiguities. The Privilege as the [...], A debate has raged for decades, or even centuries by some measures, about the justification for the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination. Why have it? Some think it protects a deep-seated moral interest in silence, whereas others think it is, at most, a means of promoting an effective or restrained criminal system. Neither camp has made progress, and in the late 2000s, many came to believe it was futile to seek an overarching justification for the privilege. This paper seeks to unsettle that belief by showing that the debate about the privilege was never as stagnant as it seemed. More importantly, it seeks to push the debate forward with an upgraded argument. Specifically, I argue that the privilege against self-incrimination protects a distinct aspect of a person s mental privacy. This general idea has steadily developed to meet various objections over its lifetime, but its current elaboration is still problematic. It can be further improved by understanding the role of memory in developing and sustaining personhood and the value of shielding its operation from the ideology of the community, even when the latter is eminently justified. Persons have a moral interest (and a First Amendment interest) in developing a conception of themselves firsthand through unmediated cognitive contact with the circumstances of their lives. One urgent instance of this interest--what I call the "interest in firsthand thinking" or the "firsthand interest" for short--is the opportunity to reckon with one's (mis)deeds. Elaborating the legal consequences of this interest yields, in turn, what I refer to as the "Firsthand Theory" of the privilege against self-incrimination. This theory can address several objections to previous mental-privacy theories of the privilege. It also answers three enduring questions: Why should juries be prohibited from inferring a silent defendant's guilt from their silence? Why is the privilege unavailable in civil proceedings? When, if ever, will immunity permit compelling someone to incriminate themselves?

Abstract: Purpose: Hearing trouble (HT) impairs communication with health care providers (HCPs) and may lead to negative care experiences that impact health outcomes. The current study aimed to examine how HT influences patient perceptions of provider interactions and whether having an accompanying companion during health care visits modifies perceptions of provider interactions. Method: This cross-sectional study analyzed 9,104 responses from the 2016 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey. Results: Compared to beneficiaries without HT, those with HT had greater odds of negative perceptions of HCP interactions. Beneficiaries with HT had greater odds of disagreeing with positive statements about care, including provider competence, provider cares to check everything, provider response, and provider rarely in a hurry. Having an accompanying companion during health care visits was not found to significantly modify perceptions of interactions. Conclusion: Findings suggest HT is a modifiable factor impacting health care communication. Implementing simple accommodation strategies in clinical practice can improve nursing care for older adults with HT. Abstract: Abstract IceCube is a neutrino observatory deployed in the glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. The $$\nu _\mu $$ νμ energy unfolding described in this paper is based on data taken with IceCube in its 79-string configuration. A sample of muon neutrino charged-current interactions with a purity of 99.5% was selected by means of a multivariate classification process based on machine learning. The subsequent unfolding was performed using the software Truee. The resulting spectrum covers an E$$_\nu $$ ν -range of more than four orders of magnitude from 125 GeV to 3.2 PeV. Compared to the Honda atmospheric neutrino flux model, the energy spectrum shows an excess of more than $$1.9\,\sigma $$ 1.9σ in four adjacent bins for neutrino energies $$E_\nu \ge 177.8\,\text {TeV}$$ Eν≥177.8TeV . The obtained spectrum is fully compatible with previous measurements of the atmospheric neutrino flux and recent IceCube measurements of a flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos.

Abstract: Abstract We present a search for a neutrino signal from dark matter self-annihilations in the Milky Way using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory (IceCube). In 1005 days of data we found no significant excess of neutrinos over the background of neutrinos produced in atmospheric air showers from cosmic ray interactions. We derive upper limits on the velocity averaged product of the dark matter self-annihilation cross section and the relative velocity of the dark matter particles $$\langle \sigma _{\text {A}}v\rangle $$ ⟨ σ A v ⟩ . Upper limits are set for dark matter particle candidate masses ranging from 10 GeV up to 1 TeV while considering annihilation through multiple channels. This work sets the most stringent limit on a neutrino signal from dark matter with mass between 10 and 100 GeV, with a limit of $$1.18\cdot 10^{-23}\text { cm}^3\text {s}^{-1}$$ 1.18 · 10 - 23 cm 3 s - 1 for 100 GeV dark matter particles self-annihilating via $$\tau ^+\tau ^-$$ τ + τ - to neutrinos (assuming the Navarro–Frenk–White dark matter halo profile).

Abstract: Abstract We present results from an analysis looking for dark matter annihilation in the Sun with the IceCube neutrino telescope. Gravitationally trapped dark matter in the Sun’s core can annihilate into Standard Model particles making the Sun a source of GeV neutrinos. IceCube is able to detect neutrinos with energies >100 GeV while its low-energy infill array DeepCore extends this to >10 GeV. This analysis uses data gathered in the austral winters between May 2011 and May 2014, corresponding to 532 days of livetime when the Sun, being below the horizon, is a source of up-going neutrino events, easiest to discriminate against the dominant background of atmospheric muons. The sensitivity is a factor of two to four better than previous searches due to additional statistics and improved analysis methods involving better background rejection and reconstructions. The resultant upper limits on the spin-dependent dark matter-proton scattering cross section reach down to $$1.46\times 10^{-5}$$ 1.46×10-5 pb for a dark matter particle of mass 500 GeV annihilating exclusively into $$\tau ^{+}\tau ^{-}$$ τ+τ- particles. These are currently the most stringent limits on the spin-dependent dark matter-proton scattering cross section for WIMP masses above 50 GeV.

193. Streamlining lung cancer management in Nova Scotia amid COVID-19: pooled triaging for expedited curative-intent oncologic surgery

Abstract: Background: The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and management of lung cancer in Canada is not fully understood. We sought to quantify the provincial volume of diagnostic imaging, thoracic surgeon referrals, time to surgery after referral, and pathologic staging for curative surgery in the context of the pandemic, as well as explore the effect of a pooled patient model, which was implemented to prioritize surgeries for lung cancer and mitigate the effects of the pandemic. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent diagnostic imaging in Nova Scotia and were subsequently referred to a thoracic surgeon at the province's only tertiary care centre for surgical management of their primary lung cancer before (Mar. 1, 2019, to Feb. 29, 2020) and during (Mar. 1, 2020, to Feb. 28, 2021) the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a survey to capture the patient and surgeon experience with a pooled patient model of managing surgical oncology cases. Results: Compared with the pre-COVID-19 period, the overall volume of chest radiography and chest computed tomography decreased by 30.9% (p < 0.001) and 18.7% (p = 0.002), respectively, in the COVID-19 period. Thoracic surgeon referrals, operative approach, extent of resection, length of hospital stay, and pathologic staging did not significantly differ. Time from referral to surgery was significantly shorter during the COVID-19 period (mean 196.8 d v. 157.9 d, p = 0.04). A pooled patient approach contributed to positive patient satisfaction. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with reductions in rates of diagnostic imaging and referrals to thoracic surgeons for management of pulmonary cancer. A pooled patient model was used to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on lung cancer management and was positively received by patients. An extended study period is needed to determine the full effect of this redistribution of resources. Nous avons voulu conna tre le volume provincial d' preuves d'imagerie diagnostique et de demandes de consultation en chirurgie thoracique, de m me que l'intervalle entre les consultations et les chirurgies et le stade de la maladie justiciable d'une chirurgie vis e curative dans le contexte de la pand mie, en plus d'explorer l'effet d'un mod le de cas group s pour tablir l'ordre de priorit des chirurgies pour le cancer du poumon et att nuer les effets de la pand mie. M thodes : Nous avons proc d une tude de cohorte r trospective aupr s des personnes ayant subi des preuves d'imagerie diagnostiques en Nouvelle- cosse et adress es en chirurgie thoracique dans le seul tablissement de soins tertiaires de la province pour une prise en charge chirurgicale de leur n oplasie pulmonaire primitive avant (du 1er mars 2019 au 29 f vrier 2020) et durant (du 1er mars 2020 au 28 f vrier 2021) la pand mie de COVID-19. Nous avons r alis un sondage sur l'exp rience des malades et des chirurgiennes et chirurgiens dans le cadre d'un mod le de cas group s pour la prise en charge chirurgicale en oncologie. R sultats : Comparativement la p riode pr -COVID-19, le volume global des radiographies pulmonaires et des tomodensitom tries thoraciques a diminu de 30,9% (p < 0,001) et de 18,7% (p = 0,002), respectivement, durant la p riode de COVID-19. Les consultations en chirurgie thoracique, l'approche chirurgicale, l'ampleur de la r section, la dur e du s jour hospitalier et la stadification de la maladie n'ont pas diff r significativement. L'intervalle entre les consultations et les chirurgies a t significativement plus bref durant la p riode de COVID-19 (moyenne 196,8 j c. 157,9 j, p = 0,04). Le mod le de priorisation des cas group s a contribu favorablement la satisfaction des malades. Conclusion : La pand mie de COVID-19 a t associ e une r duction des taux d' preuves d'imagerie diagnostique et de demandes de consultation en chirurgie thoracique pour la prise en charge du cancer du poumon. Un mod le de priorisation de cas group s a servi att nuer les effets de la pand mie sur la prise en charge du cancer du poumon et a t accueilli favorablement par les malades. Abstract: We present Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM) and Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT) searches for gamma-ray/X-ray counterparts to gravitational wave (GW) candidate events identified during the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Using Fermi-GBM on-board triggers and sub-threshold gamma-ray burst (GRB) candidates found in the Fermi-GBM ground analyses, the Targeted Search and the Untargeted Search, we investigate whether there are any coincident GRBs associated with the GWs. We also search the Swift-BAT rate data around the GW times to determine whether a GRB counterpart is present. No counterparts are found. Using both the Fermi-GBM Targeted Search and the Swift-BAT search, we calculate flux upper limits and present joint upper limits on the gamma-ray luminosity of each GW. Given these limits, we constrain theoretical models for the emission of gamma-rays from binary black hole mergers.

Abstract: Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass $M>70$ $M_\odot$) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities $0 < e \leq 0.3$ at $0.33$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The growing integration of technology into education, particularly in the STEM fields, has tended to focus on its objective advantages, ignoring its affective potential. To explore this potential, based on some principles of "Kansei/Affective Engineering," an initial analysis was conducted considering 501 interventions in a conversation among six students about a previous e-learning experience. Based on the identified needs, three activities ("applets" based on "dynamic reasoning" and contextualized in the movement of the Sun) were designed to explore the "affective value" of the tool through the feedback it provided. Thirteen engineering students at a Japanese university participated in the experiment and the results were analyzed considering the type ("task-focus/constructivist," "self-focus/motivational") and purpose of the feedback, as well as some indicators based on the Instructional Feedback Orientation Scale. The model constructed for each student revealed that those who attributed a higher value to feedback showed a greater relation between the purpose of the feedback received and the reaction selected ("completion"-positive, "correction"-negative). Furthermore, it was found that the proposed model can inform future designs based on the potential of the feedback to promote positive reactions.

198. 'I Like That We Are Allowed a Space to Be Vulnerable about Our Experiences, Given Space to Heal': Black Algebra I Educators' Perceptions of a Liberatory Algebra I Professional Learning Community

Abstract: This paper examines Black Algebra I educators' perceptions of their experiences in a professional learning community, "Algebra I Academy," designed specifically to equip Black Algebra I educators with liberatory pedagogical practices for their instruction with Black students taking Algebra I. Utilizing survey and focus group data from Black Algebra I educators who participated in the Algebra I Academy, findings from this study indicate that the Algebra I Academy had a positive effect on Black Algebra I educators by creating a sense of community with fellow Black Algebra I educators, providing a space for Black Algebra I educators to reimagine who they are as Black math educators, and by offering a collaborative space for Black Algebra I educators to learn and apply new, more liberatory, Algebra I pedagogical practices. More universally, this study highlights the need and value-add of educator learning communities that are racially affinity-based, professional learning spaces that are responsive to the historical and contemporary socio-racial contexts of educators' lives in and outside of schooling, and attentive to the social and emotional, as well as pedagogical, needs of educators.

199. Foreign Language Listening Comprehension and Listening Anxiety

Abstract: Listening comprehension plays a pivotal role in second language (L2) acquisition, but the process of listening is complex. L2 learners' listening ability is influenced by both cognitive and affective factors. Among the latter, anxiety is one of the most commonly studied variables in the field of education (Horwitz, 2001); however, its impact on learners' listening performance is inconsistent in previous research and there have been contradictory findings regarding whether anxiety levels differed significantly according to gender. To address these limitations, this study investigated the effect of gender and foreign language listening anxiety (FLLA) on listening comprehension among 187 university students in China. In addition, it explored whether there were significant differences in FLLA levels between genders. Data sources included the FLLA scale and the Oxford Online Listening Level Test to measure FLLA and L2 listening comprehension, respectively. Results from between-groups analysis of variance showed that listeners with low anxiety listened significantly better than listeners with moderate and high levels of anxiety. Gender differences were examined in two aspects of listening: listening comprehension and FLLA. Specifically, females performed better than males in listening comprehension, and females had a higher level of FLLA compared to males. These results provide implications for teaching L2 listening considering the role of anxiety and gender.

Abstract: The Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) has prepared this analysis in collaboration with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC), the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board (Workforce Board), and the Association of Washington Business, as part of a broad educational needs assessment outlined in RCW 28B.77.080. The report has four primary purposes: (1) to assess how well the state's postsecondary education system is aligned with the demands of the labor market, (2) to identify key drivers of employer demand in the various occupational clusters, (3) to highlight industries and occupational fields in which students and adult learners may find expanding employment opportunities, and (4) to explore factors, such as the advance of workplace automation, which may be impacting the labor market.
