Quantum phases can be classified by topological invariants, which take on discrete values capturing global information about the quantum state. Over the past decades, these invariants have come to play a central role in describing matter, providing the foundation for understanding superfluids, magnets, the quantum Hall effect, topological insulators, Weyl semimetals and other phenomena. Here we report a remarkable linking number (knot theory) invariant associated with loops of electronic band crossings in a mirror-symmetric ferromagnet. Using state-of-the-art spectroscopic methods, we directly observe three intertwined degeneracy loops in the material's bulk Brillouin zone three-torus, $\mathbb{T}^3$. We find that each loop links each other loop twice. Through systematic spectroscopic investigation of this linked loop quantum state, we explicitly draw its link diagram and conclude, in analogy with knot theory, that it exhibits linking number $(2,2,2)$, providing a direct determination of the invariant structure from the experimental data. On the surface of our samples, we further predict and observe Seifert boundary states protected by the bulk linked loops, suggestive of a remarkable Seifert bulk-boundary correspondence. Our observation of a quantum loop link motivates the application of knot theory to the exploration of exotic properties of quantum matter., Comment: See popular summary at https://research.princeton.edu/news/electrons-crystal-exhibit-linked-and-knotted-quantum-twists

Domain generalization (DG) methods aim to develop models that generalize to settings where the test distribution is different from the training data. In this paper, we focus on the challenging problem of multi-source zero shot DG (MDG), where labeled training data from multiple source domains is available but with no access to data from the target domain. A wide range of solutions have been proposed for this problem, including the state-of-the-art multi-domain ensembling approaches. Despite these advances, the na\"ive ERM solution of pooling all source data together and training a single classifier is surprisingly effective on standard benchmarks. In this paper, we hypothesize that, it is important to elucidate the link between pre-specified domain labels and MDG performance, in order to explain this behavior. More specifically, we consider two popular classes of MDG algorithms -- distributional robust optimization (DRO) and multi-domain ensembles, in order to demonstrate how inferring custom domain groups can lead to consistent improvements over the original domain labels that come with the dataset. To this end, we propose (i) Group-DRO++, which incorporates an explicit clustering step to identify custom domains in an existing DRO technique; and (ii) DReaME, which produces effective multi-domain ensembles through implicit domain re-labeling with a novel meta-optimization algorithm. Using empirical studies on multiple standard benchmarks, we show that our variants consistently outperform ERM by significant margins (1.5% - 9%), and produce state-of-the-art MDG performance. The recently discovered AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) family, possessing V kagome nets, has received considerable attention due to the topological electronic structure and intriguing correlated phenomena, including an exotic charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. Detailed electronic structure studies are essential to unravel the characteristics and origin of the CDW as well as its interplay with superconductivity. Here, we present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements for CsV3Sb5 at multiple temperatures and photon energies to reveal the nature of the CDW from an electronic structure perspective. We present evidence for a three-dimensional (3D) CDW order. In the process we also pinpoint a surface state attributed to a Cs terminated surface. This state was previously attributed to band folding band due to a CDW along the c direction or a quantum well state from quantum confinement. The CDW expected 2-fold lattice reconstruction along c axis is observed to be a quadrupling of the unit cell, thus for the first time directly demonstrating the 3D nature of the CDW from the electronic structure perspective. Moreover, this 3D CDW configuration originates from two distinct types of distortions in adjacent kagome layers. These present results not only provide key insights into the nature of the unconventional CDW in CsV3Sb5 but also provides an important reference for further studies on the relationship between the CDW and superconductivity., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we develop a Wasserstein autoencoder (WAE) with a hyperspherical prior for multimodal data in the application of inertial confinement fusion. Unlike a typical hyperspherical generative model that requires computationally inefficient sampling from distributions like the von Mis Fisher, we sample from a normal distribution followed by a projection layer before the generator. Finally, to determine the validity of the generated samples, we exploit a known relationship between the modalities in the dataset as a scientific constraint, and study different properties of the proposed model., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Fourth Workshop on Machine Learning and the Physical Sciences, NeurIPS 2021

During embryonic development, regeneration and homeostasis, cells have to physically integrate into their target tissues, where they ultimately execute their function. Despite a significant body of research on how mechanical forces instruct cellular behaviors within the plane of an epithelium, very little is known about the mechanical interplay at the interface between migrating cells and their surrounding tissue, which has its own dynamics, architecture and identity. Here, using quantitative in vivo imaging and molecular perturbations, together with a theoretical model, we reveal that multiciliated cell (MCC) precursors in the Xenopus embryo form dynamic filopodia that pull at the vertices of the overlying epithelial sheet to probe their stiffness and identify the preferred positions for their integration into the tissue. Moreover, we report a novel function for a structural component of vertices, the lipolysis-stimulated lipoprotein receptor (LSR), in filopodia dynamics and show its critical role in cell intercalation. Remarkably, we find that pulling forces equip the MCCs to remodel the epithelial junctions of the neighboring tissue, enabling them to generate a permissive environment for their integration. Our findings reveal the intricate physical crosstalk at the cell-tissue interface and uncover previously unknown functions for mechanical forces in orchestrating cell integration.

We present $\Delta$-UQ -- a novel, general-purpose uncertainty estimator using the concept of anchoring in predictive models. Anchoring works by first transforming the input into a tuple consisting of an anchor point drawn from a prior distribution, and a combination of the input sample with the anchor using a pretext encoding scheme. This encoding is such that the original input can be perfectly recovered from the tuple -- regardless of the choice of the anchor. Therefore, any predictive model should be able to predict the target response from the tuple alone (since it implicitly represents the input). Moreover, by varying the anchors for a fixed sample, we can estimate uncertainty in the prediction even using only a single predictive model. We find this uncertainty is deeply connected to improper sampling of the input data, and inherent noise, enabling us to estimate the total uncertainty in any system. With extensive empirical studies on a variety of use-cases, we demonstrate that $\Delta$-UQ outperforms several competitive baselines. Specifically, we study model fitting, sequential model optimization, model based inversion in the regression setting and out of distribution detection, & calibration under distribution shifts for classification.

Advances in spatial proteomics and protein colocalization are a driving force in the understanding of cellular mechanisms and their influence on biological processes. New methods in the field of spatial proteomics call for the development of algorithms and open up new avenues of research. The newly introduced Molecular Pixelation (MPX) provides spatial information on surface proteins and their relationship with each other in single cells. This allows for in silico representation of neighborhoods of membrane proteins as graphs. In order to analyze this new data modality, we adapted local assortativity in networks of MPX single-cell graphs and created a method that is able to capture detailed information on the spatial relationships of proteins. The introduced method can evaluate the pairwise colocalization of proteins and access higher-order similarity to investigate the colocalization of multiple proteins at the same time. We evaluated the method using publicly available MPX datasets where T cells were treated with a chemokine to study uropod formation. We demonstrate that adjusted local assortativity detects the effects of the stimuli at both single- and multiple-marker levels, which enhances our understanding of the uropod formation. We also applied our method to treating cancerous B-cell lines using a therapeutic antibody. With the adjusted local assortativity, we recapitulated the effect of rituximab on the polarity of CD20. Our computational method together with MPX improves our understanding of not only the formation of cell polarity and protein colocalization under stimuli but also advancing the overall insight into immune reaction and reorganization of cell surface proteins, which in turn allows the design of novel therapies. We foresee its applicability to other types of biological spatial data when represented as undirected graphs.

Cost effective ,Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants ,Consensus ,Diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs ,RC633-647.5 - Abstract
Background: The non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have become the mainstay anticoagulation therapy for patients requiring oral anticoagulants (OACs) in the Gulf Council Cooperation (GCC) countries. The frequency of NOAC-associated major bleeding is expected to increase in the Emergency Department (ED). Nonetheless, we still lack local guidelines and recommendations for bleeding management in the region. The present Delphi-based consensus aims to establish a standardized and evidence-based clinical care pathway for managing NOAC-associated major bleeding in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methods: We adopted a three-step modified Delphi method to develop evidence-based recommendations through two voting rounds and an advisory meeting between the two rounds. A panel of 11 experts from the KSA and UAE participated in the consensus development. Results: Twenty-eight statements reached the consensus level. These statements addressed key aspects of managing major bleeding events associated with NOACs, including the increased use of NOAC in clinical practice, clinical care pathways, and treatment options. Conclusion: The present Delphi consensus provides evidence-based recommendations and protocols for the management of NOAC-associated bleeding in the region. Patients with major NOAC-induced bleeding should be referred to a well-equipped ED with standardized management protocols. A multidisciplinary approach is recommended for establishing the association between NOAC use and major bleeding. Treating physicians should have prompt access to specific reversal agents to optimize patient outcomes. Real-world evidence and national guidelines are needed to aid all stakeholders involved in NOAC-induced bleeding management.

Medical AI has tremendous potential to advance healthcare by supporting the evidence-based practice of medicine, personalizing patient treatment, reducing costs, and improving provider and patient experience. We argue that unlocking this potential requires a systematic way to measure the performance of medical AI models on large-scale heterogeneous data. To meet this need, we are building MedPerf, an open framework for benchmarking machine learning in the medical domain. MedPerf will enable federated evaluation in which models are securely distributed to different facilities for evaluation, thereby empowering healthcare organizations to assess and verify the performance of AI models in an efficient and human-supervised process, while prioritizing privacy. We describe the current challenges healthcare and AI communities face, the need for an open platform, the design philosophy of MedPerf, its current implementation status, and our roadmap. We call for researchers and organizations to join us in creating the MedPerf open benchmarking platform.

Explanation techniques that synthesize small, interpretable changes to a given image while producing desired changes in the model prediction have become popular for introspecting black-box models. Commonly referred to as counterfactuals, the synthesized explanations are required to contain discernible changes (for easy interpretability) while also being realistic (consistency to the data manifold). In this paper, we focus on the case where we have access only to the trained deep classifier and not the actual training data. While the problem of inverting deep models to synthesize images from the training distribution has been explored, our goal is to develop a deep inversion approach to generate counterfactual explanations for a given query image. Despite their effectiveness in conditional image synthesis, we show that existing deep inversion methods are insufficient for producing meaningful counterfactuals. We propose DISC (Deep Inversion for Synthesizing Counterfactuals) that improves upon deep inversion by utilizing (a) stronger image priors, (b) incorporating a novel manifold consistency objective and (c) adopting a progressive optimization strategy. We find that, in addition to producing visually meaningful explanations, the counterfactuals from DISC are effective at learning classifier decision boundaries and are robust to unknown test-time corruptions., Comment: Neurips 2021

Scrub typhus is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi from the typhus fever group. Transmitted by chiggers (mite larvae) Leptobrombidium deliensis in India, when humans trespass mite islands, vectors are constantly fed with the bacilli by reservoirs (rodents and birds). It can also be transmitted transovarially and kept in a constant vicious cycle. The disease is often overlooked due to the non-specific clinical manifestations and lack of specific diagnostic facilities making it a challenge diagnostically and therapeutically. Disease manifestations range from fever, rash, lymphadenopathy, eschar to severe pneumonia and neuropsychiatric complications causing morbidity and mortality. Here we describe a case of a ten-year-old child with bilateral abducens nerve palsy caused by scrub meningoencephalitis, which completely resolved in eight weeks with doxycycline therapy.

Oral cavity structures receive abundant perfusion from the branches of the external carotid artery. Although hemorrhage is a common complication of oral cancer, bleeding from a cancerous mouth can be a devastating event in the emergency department. Lingual artery embolization is a minimally invasive interventional radiology procedure that has rarely been reported in the literature. This case involves a patient with tongue cancer who experienced massive oral bleeding leading to cardiac arrest. Fortunately, the patient was successfully resuscitated, and spontaneous circulation was restored. Diagnostic angiography confirmed the presence of pseudoaneurysm in the lingual artery. Ultimately, bleeding was definitively controlled through bilateral lingual artery embolization. This case underscores the critical importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving emergency physicians, otolaryngologists, and interventional radiologists in managing complex vascular lesions in the head and neck. Furthermore, it contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of embolization techniques as a valuable tool in the management of vascular lesions in the head and neck region.

Science - Abstract
Abstract Condensed matter physics has often provided a platform for investigating the interplay between particles and fields in cases that have not been observed in high-energy physics. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we provide an example of this by visualizing the electronic structure of a noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate NdAlSi in both the paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic states. We observe surface Fermi arcs and bulk Weyl fermion dispersion as well as the emergence of new Weyl fermions in the ferrimagnetic state. Our results establish NdAlSi as a magnetic Weyl semimetal and provide an experimental observation of ferrimagnetic regulation of Weyl fermions in condensed matter.

Introduction: Optimising post-strike ball velocity is essential for success in football. Biomechanical factors play a significant role in determining ball speed. However, further investigation is needed to understand the specific relationships between the biomechanical factors and post-strike ball velocity in football players. Aim: To identify the key biomechanical factors contributing to post-strike ball velocity and provide insights for enhancing performance in league-level football players. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science, Tamil Nadu, India. The duration of the study was five months, from January 2022 to May 2022. The study included 25 professional male football players from national-level league teams. Participants performed maximal instep kicks while various kinematic variables were measured using Vicon cameras, Advanced Mechanical Technology Inc., (AMTI) force footplates, and a radar speed gun. Data processing was performed using Vicon Nexus software version 2.7. The data were analysed using R statistical software version 4.0.2. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) post-hoc tests, were used to compare the various kick matrices across the players. Pearson’s r correlation analysis was used to check for a correlation between post-strike ball velocity and other kick matrices. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the relative effects of various kick matrices on post-strike ball velocity, with significance set at a p-value

Science - Abstract
Abstract Inter-organelle contact and communication between mitochondria and sarco/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) maintain cellular homeostasis and are profoundly disturbed during tissue ischemia. We tested the hypothesis that the formin Diaphanous-1 (DIAPH1), which regulates actin dynamics, signal transduction and metabolic functions, contributes to these processes. We demonstrate that DIAPH1 interacts directly with Mitofusin-2 (MFN2) to shorten mitochondria-SR/ER distance, thereby enhancing mitochondria-ER contact in cells including cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells and macrophages. Solution structure studies affirm the interaction between the Diaphanous Inhibitory Domain and the cytosolic GTPase domain of MFN2. In male rodent and human cardiomyocytes, DIAPH1-MFN2 interaction regulates mitochondrial turnover, mitophagy, and oxidative stress. Introduction of synthetic linker construct, which shorten the mitochondria-SR/ER distance, mitigated the molecular and functional benefits of DIAPH1 silencing in ischemia. This work establishes fundamental roles for DIAPH1-MFN2 interaction in the regulation of mitochondria-SR/ER contact networks. We propose that targeting pathways that regulate DIAPH1-MFN2 interactions may facilitate recovery from tissue ischemia.

Abstract In half-metallic systems, electronic conduction is mediated by a single spin species, offering enormous potential for spintronic devices. Here, using microscopic-area angle-resolved photoemission, we show that a spin-polarised two-dimensional hole gas is naturally realised in the polar magnetic semiconductor AgCrSe2 by an intrinsic self-doping at its CrSe2-terminated surface. Through comparison with first-principles calculations, we unveil a striking role of spin-orbit coupling for the surface hole gas, unlocked by both bulk and surface inversion symmetry breaking, suggesting routes for stabilising complex magnetic textures in the surface layer of AgCrSe2.

Prior criteria for organ dysfunction in critically ill children were based mainly on expert opinion. We convened the Pediatric Organ Dysfunction Information Update Mandate (PODIUM) expert panel to summarize data characterizing single and multiple organ dysfunction and to derive contemporary criteria for pediatric organ dysfunction. The panel was composed of 88 members representing 47 institutions and 7 countries. We conducted systematic reviews of the literature to derive evidence-based criteria for single organ dysfunction for neurologic, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, acute liver, renal, hematologic, coagulation, endocrine, endothelial, and immune system dysfunction. We searched PubMed and Embase from January 1992 to January 2020. Study identification was accomplished using a combination of medical subject headings terms and keywords related to concepts of pediatric organ dysfunction. Electronic searches were performed by medical librarians. Studies were eligible for inclusion if the authors reported original data collected in critically ill children; evaluated performance characteristics of scoring tools or clinical assessments for organ dysfunction; and assessed a patient-centered, clinically meaningful outcome. Data were abstracted from each included study into an electronic data extraction form. Risk of bias was assessed using the Quality in Prognosis Studies tool. Consensus was achieved for a final set of 43 criteria for pediatric organ dysfunction through iterative voting and discussion. Although the PODIUM criteria for organ dysfunction were limited by available evidence and will require validation, they provide a contemporary foundation for researchers to identify and study single and multiple organ dysfunction in critically ill children.

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons ,Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
The superconducting order parameter of the first heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu2Si2 is currently under debate. A key ingredient to understand its superconductivity and physical properties is the quasiparticle dispersion and Fermi surface, which remains elusive experimentally. Here we present measurements from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results emphasize the key role played by the Ce 4f electrons for the low-temperature Fermi surface, highlighting a band-dependent conduction-f electron hybridization. In particular, we find a very heavy quasi-two-dimensional electron band near the bulk X point and moderately heavy three-dimensional hole pockets near the Z point. Comparison with theoretical calculations reveals the strong local correlation in this compound, calling for further theoretical studies. Our results provide the electronic basis to understand the heavy fermion behavior and superconductivity; implications for the enigmatic superconductivity of this compound are also discussed.

Computer Science - Machine Learning - Abstract
Many problems in science and engineering require making predictions based on few observations. To build a robust predictive model, these sparse data may need to be augmented with simulated data, especially when the design space is multi-dimensional. Simulations, however, often suffer from an inherent bias. Estimation of this bias may be poorly constrained not only because of data sparsity, but also because traditional predictive models fit only one type of observed outputs, such as scalars or images, instead of all available output data modalities, which might have been acquired and simulated at great cost. To break this limitation and open up the path for multi-modal calibration, we propose to combine a novel, transfer learning technique for suppressing the bias with recent developments in deep learning, which allow building predictive models with multi-modal outputs. First, we train an initial neural network model on simulated data to learn important correlations between different output modalities and between simulation inputs and outputs. Then, the model is partially retrained, or transfer learned, to fit the experiments; a method that has never been implemented in this type of architecture. Using fewer than 10 inertial confinement fusion experiments for training, transfer learning systematically improves the simulation predictions while a simple output calibration, which we design as a baseline, makes the predictions worse. We also offer extensive cross-validation with real and carefully designed synthetic data. The method described in this paper can be applied to a wide range of problems that require transferring knowledge from simulations to the domain of experiments.

Unsupervised deep learning methods for solving audio restoration problems extensively rely on carefully tailored neural architectures that carry strong inductive biases for defining priors in the time or spectral domain. In this context, lot of recent success has been achieved with sophisticated convolutional network constructions that recover audio signals in the spectral domain. However, in practice, audio priors require careful engineering of the convolutional kernels to be effective at solving ill-posed restoration tasks, while also being easy to train. To this end, in this paper, we propose a new U-Net based prior that does not impact either the network complexity or convergence behavior of existing convolutional architectures, yet leads to significantly improved restoration. In particular, we advocate the use of carefully designed dilation schedules and dense connections in the U-Net architecture to obtain powerful audio priors. Using empirical studies on standard benchmarks and a variety of ill-posed restoration tasks, such as audio denoising, in-painting and source separation, we demonstrate that our proposed approach consistently outperforms widely adopted audio prior architectures.
