Purpose: Fathers play a critical but underresearched role in their children's cognitive and linguistic development. Focusing on two-parent families with a mother and a father, the present longitudinal study explores the amount of paternal input infants hear during the first 2 years of life, how this input changes over time, and how it relates to child volubility. We devote special attention to parentese, a near-universal style of infant-directed speech, distinguished by its higher pitch, slower tempo, and exaggerated intonation. Method: We examined the daylong recordings of the same 23 infants at ages 6, 10, 14, 18, and 24 months, given English-speaking families. The infants were recorded in the presence of their parents (mother-father dyads), who were predominantly White and ranged from mid to high socioeconomic status (SES). We analyzed the effects of parent gender and child age on adult word counts and parentese, as well as the effects of maternal and paternal word counts and parentese on child vocalizations. Results: On average, the infants were exposed to 46.8% fewer words and 51.9% less parentese from fathers than from mothers, even though paternal parentese grew at a 2.8-times faster rate as the infants aged. An asymmetry emerged where maternal word counts and paternal parentese predicted child vocalizations, but paternal word counts and maternal parentese did not. Conclusions: While infants may hear less input from their fathers than their mothers in predominantly White, mid-to-high SES, English-speaking households, paternal parentese still plays a unique role in their linguistic development. Future research on sources of variability in child language outcomes should thus control for parental differences since parents' language can differ substantially and differentially predict child language.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM; grade IV astrocytoma) is the most prevalent and aggressive form of primary brain cancer. A subpopulation of multipotent cells termed GBM cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a critical role in tumor initiation, tumor maintenance, metastasis, drug resistance, and recurrence following surgery. Here we report the identification of a small molecule, termed RIPGBM, from a cell-based chemical screen that selectively induces apoptosis in multiple primary patient-derived GBM CSC cultures. The cell type-dependent selectivity of this compound appears to arise at least in part from redox-dependent formation of a proapoptotic derivative, termed cRIPGBM, in GBM CSCs. cRIPGBM induces caspase 1-dependent apoptosis by binding to receptor-interacting protein kinase 2 (RIPK2) and acting as a molecular switch, which reduces the formation of a prosurvival RIPK2/TAK1 complex and increases the formation of a proapoptotic RIPK2/caspase 1 complex. In an orthotopic intracranial GBM CSC tumor xenograft mouse model, RIPGBM was found to significantly suppress tumor formation in vivo. Our chemical genetics-based approach has identified a drug candidate and a potential drug target that provide an approach to the development of treatments for this devastating disease.

Purpose The objective of this study was to compare the effect of adding meperidine or sufentanil to hyperbaric bupivacaine in patients undergoing elective cesarean delivery (CD) under spinal anesthesia. The primary outcome was the first analgesic request time, and secondary outcomes included an analgesic requirement in the first 24 h and intraoperative and postoperative side effects. Methods This was a randomized, double-blind clinical trial in which patients were allocated into two groups. One group received preservative-free meperidine 12.5 mg (1 mL) in addition to 0.5% 10 mg (2 mL) of hyperbaric bupivacaine for spinal anesthesia. The other group received sufentanil 5 [mu]g (1 mL) added to 0.5% 10 mg (2 mL) of hyperbaric bupivacaine. Results A total of 60 parturients were included in the study, 30 patients in each group. Time to first analgesic request was significantly longer in the meperidine group (400.0 ± 142.1 min) compared to (274.0 ± 104.1 min) in the sufentanil group (P < 0.0001). Around 73% of the parturients in the sufentanil group required analgesics at 4 h compared to 13% in the meperidine group (P < 0.0001). There were no significant differences in postoperative pruritus, nausea and vomiting, in addition to shivering. As for surgeon satisfaction, 56.7% reported excellent abdominal muscle relaxation during the surgery in the meperidine group compared to 10% in the sufentanil group (P < 0.0001). Conclusion Meperidine was superior to sufentanil in terms of improved analgesia, intraoperative postoperative pruritus, and shivering, as well as increased surgeon satisfaction in women undergoing spinal anesthesia for elective cesarean delivery. ABSTRACT: Background: It is documented that COVID-19 survivors have prolonged morbidity and functional impairment for many years. Data regarding post-COVID-19 lung functions is lacking from the Indian population. We aim to evaluate the lung functions in such patients after 3–6 months of hospital discharge. Methods: In this prospective observational study, patients were assessed 3 to 6 months post-discharge and underwent standardized pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and CT Thorax if required. The following parameters were measured and correlated with the disease severity: Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in the First Second (FEV1), Forced Expiratory Flows at 25 and 75% of FVC (FEF25%-75%), Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) and FEV1/FVC. Results: A total of 52 post-COVID-19 patients were enrolled in the study, with a median age of 43 years (78.8% males). 44.2% of patients had mild disease, 26.9% had moderate disease and 23.1% had severe disease at hospital admission. A restrictive pattern was seen in 20.8% of patients. The mean value of FEV1 and FVC decreased as the disease severity increased. FEV1: mild-3.21 ± 0.71, moderate-2.62 ± 0.61 and severe- 2.51 ± 0.72, P = 0.02; FVC: mild-3.69 ± 0.81, moderate-3.04 ± 0.71 and severe- 2.93 ± 0.87, P = 0.02. After adjusting the confounding factors, the mean pulmonary function values were lower in the patients who required oxygen support, with a significant difference in FEV1, FVC, PEF and FEF 25–75% with P values of 0.025, 0.046, 0.028 and 0.007, respectively. 66.67% had abnormal HRCT findings. Age and high LDH were correlated with HRCT abnormality with P values of 0.015 and 0.024. Age >50 years was found to be an independent predictor of the subsequent development of abnormality on the HRCT thorax. Conclusions: Patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, which required oxygen, especially severe disease at the time of hospitalization, had a higher rate of abnormal spirometry than patients with mild symptoms. Context Ramadan fasting (RF) is associated with various physiological and metabolic changes among fasting Muslims. However, it remains unclear whether these effects are attributable to changes in meal timing or changes in dietary energy and macronutrient intakes. Furthermore, the literature on the associations between RF, meal timing, and energy and macronutrient intakes is inconclusive. Objectives This systematic review aimed to estimate the effect sizes of RF on energy and macronutrient intakes (carbohydrates, protein, fats, dietary fiber, and water) and determine the effect of different moderators on the examined outcomes. Data Sources The Cochrane, CINAHL, EMBASE, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, PubMed/MEDLINE, ProQuest Medical, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to January 31, 2022. Data Extraction The studies that assessed energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat, fiber, and water intakes pre- and post-fasting were extracted. Data Analysis Of the 4776 identified studies, 85 relevant studies (n = 4594 participants aged 9–85 y) were selected. The effect sizes for the studied variables were as follows: energy (number of studies [K] = 80, n = 3343 participants; mean difference [MD]: −142.45; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −215.19, −69.71), carbohydrates (K = 75, n = 3111; MD: −23.90; 95% CI: −36.42, −11.38), protein (K = 74, n = 3108; MD: −4.21; 95% CI: −7.34, −1.07), fats (K = 73, n = 3058; MD: −2.03; 95% CI: −5.73, 1.67), fiber (K = 16, n = 1198; MD: 0.47; 95% CI: −1.44, 2.39), and water (K = 17, n = 772; MD: −350.80; 95% CI: −618.09, 83.50). Subgroup analyses showed age significantly moderated the 6 dietary outcomes, and physical activity significantly moderated water intake. There were significant reductions in energy, carbohydrate, and protein intakes during RF. Aims: Young people with first-episode psychosis (FEP) or at ultra-high risk (UHR) of psychosis often have lower vocational engagement than their peers. This study examines the effect of treatment in early intervention for psychosis services in Australia on engagement in education and employment. Methods: This is a naturalistic sample of young people aged 12–25 with FEP (n = 1574) and UHR (n = 1515), accessing treatment in the headspace Early Psychosis (hEP) programme. Engagement in education and employment was assessed at baseline and every 90 days in treatment. Mixed effects logistic regression were used to analyse changes over time. Results: On entering the hEP programme, approximately 49% of the young people with FEP and 28% of the young people at UHR status identified as Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). The odds of being NEET were reduced by 27% (95% confidence interval = [14, 39]) for every 6 months treatment for the FEP group, but no change in NEET status was observed in the UHR group. In both groups, absence from daily activities was significantly reduced during time in treatment. Conclusion: While there are methodological challenges analysing real-world non-control group cohort data, the findings indicate positive effects of the hEP programme on vocational and daily activity engagement for young people with FEP and at UHR status. A large proportion of the young people still identified as NEET after receiving treatment services, suggesting further refinement to ensure targeted and consistent vocational support throughout care. Daylong recordings provide an ecologically valid option for analyzing language input, and have become a central method for studying child language development. However, the vast majority of this work has been conducted in North America. We harnessed a unique collection of daylong recordings from Slovenian infants (age: 16–30 months, N = 40, 18 girls), and focus our attention on manually annotated measures of parentese (infant‐directed speech with a higher pitch, slower tempo, and exaggerated intonation), conversational turns, infant words, and word combinations. Measures from daylong recordings showed large variation, but were comparable to previous studies with North American samples. Infants heard almost twice as much speech and parentese from mothers compared to fathers, but there were no differences in language input to boys and girls. Positive associations were found between the social‐interactional features of language input (parentese, turn‐taking) and infants' concurrent language production. Measures of child speech from daylong recordings were positively correlated with measures obtained through the Slovenian MacArthur‐Bates Communicative Development Inventory. These results support the notion that the social‐interactional features of parental language input are the foundation of infants' language skills, even in an environment where infants spend much of their waking hours in childcare settings, as they do in Slovenia. This study investigates the influence of the Western Disturbance (WD) on atmospheric wind patterns and associated precipitation over the Himalayan region utilizing observations carried out using the ARIES ST Radar (ASTRAD) at Nainital [29.36° N, 79.46° E, 1800 m] during March 2024. The observations reveal that during the WD events, the wind direction was predominantly south westerly/westerly with varying speeds, reaching up to 67 m/s. The HYSPLIT model back-trajectory analysis confirmed that the moisture-laden air masses originated from the Atlantic Ocean. Vertical wind measurements indicated significant atmospheric instability and convection, characterized by updraft and downdraft motions in three distinct height regions between 8 km and 10 km, an updraft between 6 km and 7 km, and another downdraft between 4.5 km and 5 km. The core height region of the subtropical westerly jet (SWJ) embedded in WD and shift in height with maximum wind speed are also identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Social media has become a dominant part of daily lives for many, but excessive use may lead to an experience of stress. Only relatively few studies have investigated social media's influence on mental health. Aims: We aimed to investigate whether social media use is associated with perceived stress and changes in perceived stress over 18 months. Methods: The study population consisted of 25,053 adults (mean age 42.8; 62% women) from the SmartSleep Study. Self-reported frequency of social media use, of 10 specific social media platforms, and of perceived stress (the Perceived Stress Scale 4 item) was obtained at baseline and 18-months follow-up (N = 1745). The associations were evaluated at baseline and follow-up using multiple linear regression models adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Compared to non-use, high social media use (at least every second hour) was associated with a slightly higher perceived stress level at baseline. No association was found between the frequency of social media use and changes in perceived stress during follow-up. Only small differences in these associations were noted across social media platforms. Conclusions: Further studies are needed to comprehensively explore the relationship between excessive social media use and mental health, recognizing different characteristics across social media platforms. Objective: To establish the impact of smoking on the severity of COVID-19 infection among adults 18 years and above in Qatar during 2020–2021. Design: Analytical cross-sectional study from May 2020 to 2021. Setting: Health Information System (HIS) of Communicable disease and control center of Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. Participant: We randomly selected participants from all COVID-19 confirmed cases (n = 1036). Participants below 18 years old, people with HIV, and those who could not communicate in English and Arabic were excluded. The remaining patients (n = 576) were then allocated into smoking and nonsmoking groups. Result: The prevalence of tobacco smoking was (20.48%) among patients with COVID-19 infection. Age, nationality, employment, and low-to-moderate income were statistically significantly associated with smoking. In addition, the proportion of smokers who required hospitalization was higher compared to nonsmokers (23.7% vs. 17.9%) and were younger (mean age 44.18 years ±18.431) than nonsmokers (mean age 51.6 years ±18.382). The logistic regression revealed that smokers had significantly higher odds of Vitamin D deficiency than nonsmokers [OR: 2.358; CI: 1.017–5.513]. Conclusion: Even with limited statistical significance between smoking history and COVID-19 disease severity and outcome, clinical risk differences were observed among smokers.
