Background Elevated nonfasting triglycerides were associated with non‐Alzheimer dementia in a recent study. However, this study neither evaluated the association of fasting triglycerides with incident cognitive impairment (ICI) nor adjusted for high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol or hs‐CRP (high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein), known risk markers for ICI and dementia. Methods and Results We examined the association between fasting triglycerides and ICI among 16 170 participants in the REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke) study without cognitive impairment or a history of stroke at baseline in 2003 to 2007 and who had no stroke events during follow‐up through September 2018. User materials (UMAT) in finite element codes allow the researchers or engineers to apply their own material routines. Simple software interfaces are specified to represent the material behavior in software. In order to use these already existing and often validated models to Peridynamics a UMAT interface is presented. It allows the simplified use of already existing material routines in the peridynamic framework Peridigm. The interface is based on the Abaqus UMAT definition and allows the integration of Fortran routines directly into Peridigm. The integration of already existing UMAT routines based in Peridigm eliminates the need for redevelopment and reprogramming material models from classical continuum mechanics theory. In addition, the same material model implementations are applicable in finite element as well as peridynamic simulations. This opens up new possibilities for analysis, verification and comparison. With this interface many material routines can be reused and applied to progressive failure analysis. The source code is stored in a GitHub repository.

In a GM-CSF driven myeloid cell deficient mouse model (Csf2-/-) that has preserved insulin sensitivity despite increased adiposity, we used unbiased three-dimensional integration of proteome profiles, metabolic profiles, and gene regulatory networks to understand adipose tissue proteome-wide changes and their metabolic implications. Multi-dimensional liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and extended multiplex mass labeling was used to analyze proteomes of epididymal adipose tissues isolated from Csf2+/+ and Csf2-/- mice that were fed low fat, high fat, or high fat plus cholesterol diets for 8 weeks. The metabolic health (as measured by body weight, adiposity, plasma fasting glucose, insulin, triglycerides, phospholipids, total cholesterol levels, and glucose and insulin tolerance tests) deteriorated with diet for both genotypes, while mice lacking Csf2 were protected from insulin resistance. Chronic Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is considered the main risk factor for the development of gastric cancer. Pathophysiological changes in the gastric mucosa initiated by this bacterium can persist even after pharmacological eradication and are likely attributable also to changes induced in non-infected cells as a consequence of intercellular communication via extracellular vesicles (EVs). To better understand what such changes might entail, we isolated EVs from immortalized normal gastric GES-1 cells infected (EVHp+) or not with H. pylori (EVHp-) by ultracentrifugation and characterized them. Infection of GES-1 cells with H. pylori significantly increased the release of EVs and slightly decreased the EV mean size. Incubation with EVHp+ for 24 h decreased the viability of GES-1 cells, but increased the levels of IL-23 in GES-1 cells, as well as the migration of GES-1 and gastric cancer AGS cells. Furthermore, incubation of GES-1 and AGS cells with EVHp+, but not with EVHp-, promoted cell invasion and trans-endothelial migration in vitro. Moreover, stimulation of endothelial EA.hy926 cells for 16 h with EVHp+ promoted the formation of linked networks. Finally, analysis by mass spectrometry identified proteins uniquely present and others enriched in EVHp+ compared to EVHp-, several of which are known targets of hypoxia induced factor-1α (HIF-1α) that may promote the acquisition of traits important for the genesis/progression of gastric pre-neoplastic changes associated with H. pylori infection. In conclusion, the harmful effects of H. pylori infection associated with the development of gastric malignancies may spread via EVs to non-infected areas in the early and later stages of gastric carcinogenesis.

Contemporary college student activism has been particularly visible and effective in the past few years at US institutions of higher education and is projected only to grow in future years. Almost all of these protests and demands, while explicitly linked to social and racial justice, are sites of resistance to the neoliberalization of the academy. These activists are imagining a post-neoliberal society, and are building their demands around these potential new social imaginaries. Based on a discourse analysis of contemporary college student activist demands, to examine more closely the ways that student activists understand, resist, critique, and offer new alternatives to current (neoliberal) structures in higher education, it is suggested that student activists might be one key to understanding what's next for higher education in a post-neoliberal context. The activists' critiques of the structure of higher education reveal a sophisticated understanding of the current socio-political, cultural, and economic realities. Their demands show an optimistic, creative imagination that could serve educators well as we grapple with our first steps down a new road. Using their critiques and demands as a jumping-off point, this paper offers the blueprint for a new social imaginary in higher education, one that is focused on community and justice.
