181. Node Balanced Steady States: Unifying and Generalizing Complex and Detailed Balanced Steady States

Abstract

We introduce a unifying and generalizing framework for complex and detailed balanced steady states in chemical reaction network theory. To this end, we generalize the graph commonly used to represent a reaction network. Specifically, we introduce a graph, called a reaction graph, that has one edge for each reaction but potentially multiple nodes for each complex. A special class of steady states, called node balanced steady states, is naturally associated with such a reaction graph. We show that complex and detailed balanced steady states are special cases of node balanced steady states by choosing appropriate reaction graphs. Further, we show that node balanced steady states have properties analogous to complex balanced steady states, such as uniqueness and asymptotical stability in each stoichiometric compatibility class. Moreover, we associate an integer, called the deficiency, to a reaction graph that gives the number of independent relations in the reaction rate constants that need to be satisfied for a positive node balanced steady state to exist. The set of reaction graphs (modulo isomorphism) is equipped with a partial order that has the complex balanced reaction graph as minimal element. We relate this order to the deficiency and to the set of reaction rate constants for which a positive node balanced steady state exists.

Abstract

We study linear systems of equations with coefficients in a generic partially ordered ring $R$ and a unique solution, and seek conditions for the solution to be nonnegative, that is, every component of the solution is a quotient of two nonnegative elements in $R$. The requirement of a nonnegative solution arises typically in applications, such as in biology and ecology, where quantities of interest are concentrations and abundances. We provide novel conditions on a labeled multidigraph associated with the linear system that guarantee the solution to be nonnegative. Furthermore, we study a generalization of the first class of linear systems, where the coefficient matrix has a specific block form and provide analogous conditions for nonnegativity of the solution, similarly based on a labeled multidigraph. The latter scenario arises naturally in chemical reaction network theory, when studying full or partial parameterizations of the positive part of the steady state variety of a polynomial dynamical system in the concentrations of the molecular species.

Abstract

Simple Summary: Patients suffering from taste disorders have been unable to find treatments in the pharmaceutical industry. In this study, a novel strategy has been presented to reduce side effects in patients suffering from cancer by administering dried miracle berries (DMBs), which contain the taste-modifying glycoprotein miraculin, as an adjuvant to medical-nutritional therapy. During a three-month pilot randomized, parallel, triple-blind, and placebo-controlled clinical trial, malnourished patients with cancer and dysgeusia received either a standard dose of DMB, a high dose of DMB, or a placebo. We analyzed the oral microbiome of patients who consumed a DMB or placebo tablet before each main meal. Patients with cancer and dysgeusia who consumed DMB regularly displayed changes to their oral microbiome, which may have contributed to the maintenance of an appropriate immune response. Background/Objectives: Dysgeusia contributes to the derangement of nutritional status in patients with cancer as well as worsening the quality of life. There has been a lack of effective treatments for taste disorders provided by the pharmaceutical industry. Methods: This was a pilot randomized, parallel, triple-blind, and placebo-controlled intervention clinical trial in which 31 malnourished patients with cancer and dysgeusia receiving antineoplastic treatment were randomized into three arms [standard dose of DMB (150 mg DMB/tablet), high dose of DMB (300 mg DMB/tablet) or placebo (300 mg freeze-dried strawberry)] for three months. Patients consumed a DMB or placebo tablet before each main meal. Using the nanopore methodology, we analyzed the oral microbiome of patients with cancer using saliva samples. Results: All patients with cancer and dysgeusia had dysbiosis in terms of lower bacterial diversity and richness. DMB consumption was associated with changes in oral microbiome composition. Neither selected bacteria nor taste perception, type of diet, and cytokine levels were associated with mucositis. Likewise, alcohol and tobacco consumption as well as general and digestive toxicity due to systemic therapy were not associated with specific changes of the oral microbiome, according to logistic binary regression. The standard dose of DMB resulted in a lower abundance of Veillonella compared with the high DMB dose and placebo at 3 months after intervention with DMB. In particular, some species such as Streptococcus parasanguinis, Veillonella parvula, and Streptococcus mutans were less abundant in the DMB standard-dose group. Additionally, the consumption of a standard dose of DMB revealed a negative association between the concentrations of TNF-α and the abundance of species such as Streptococcus thermophilus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Streptococcus agalactiae. Conclusions: Accordingly, regular DMB consumption could modify the oral microbiome in patients with cancer and dysgeusia, which may contribute to maintaining an appropriate immune response. Abstract

El presente trabajo analiza de forma sistemática y detallada el procedimiento de contratación de servicios jurídicos de defensa jurisdiccional y la posibilidad de retribución mediante pacto de cuota litis. Para ello, en primer lugar, se estudia si los servicios de representación y defensa de las Administraciones Públicas están o no sujetos a las a las previsiones de la Ley 9/2017, de 8 de noviembre, de Contratos del Sector Público. Seguidamente, se analizan en profundidad las modalidades de procedimiento de adjudicación que se ajustan mejor a la necesidad de la correcta selección del licitador en estos servicios, particularmente, el procedimiento negociado y el procedimiento abierto. A continuación, se evalúa la posibilidad de utilizar un modelo de retribución de cuota litis, para después finalizar el trabajo con la descripción de los principales hallazgos y conclusiones alcanzadas.
