This contribution addresses the problem of optimizing the operation of a batch process where energy is supplied electrically from mixed traditional and renewable sources. The case study considered here is that of an evaporator for the synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, where an energy-demanding distillation step is optimized and scheduled taking into account the forecasted availability of energy from renewables. The goal is to optimize the utilization of the energy from the renewable sources, without violating process and product constraints. A method is outlined to assess whether predictive demand-side management is a viable option and how to integrate it into the operation of a batch process based on the process characteristics.

In this work, the generation aware production planning for a paint thickener production is investigated. In this production, products of different grades and therefore varying energy requirements are produced by electrified twin-screw extruders. The energy grid information is based on the German grid in 2020. For the investigated method, the results of the optimization of a very detailed and computationally demanding process model are used to build a computationally efficient surrogate model. This model maps the optimal minimal energy requirement to a given throughput and product grade at the optimal operating conditions. Based on this surrogate model and the price information, the optimization problem for the production planning is formulated. Constraints for the optimization problems are the satisfaction of the production demands of quantity and grade. The objective function is the minimization of the energy costs and the carbon footprint of the product caused by different energy mixes of the grid. To increase the industrial acceptance and to obtain a smoother solution, the use of a coarser time discretization is compared to penalizing the throughput changes in the cost function. The optimization problem is solved for a weekly production schedule and hourly changing energy costs and carbon footprints. The results are discussed and the performance is compared to a non-generation aware production planning. Lastly, the application at a larger scale with multiple parallel production machines is discussed.

Abstract Background Lipid levels in blood have decreased considerably during the past decades in the general population partly due to use of statins. This study aims to investigate the trends in lipid levels between 2001 and 2018 in a statin-free population from primary health care, overall and by sex and age. Methods In a cohort of 634,119 patients from general practice with no diagnoses or medical treatments that affected lipid levels of total cholesterol (TC; n = 1,574,339) between 2001 and 2018 were identified. Similarly, measurements of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; n = 1,302,440), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; n = 1,417,857) and triglycerides (TG; n = 1,329,477) were identified. Results Mean TC decreased from 5.64 mmol/L (95% CI: 5.63–5.65) in 2001 to 5.17 mmol/L (95% CI: 5.16–5.17) in 2018 while LDL-C decreased from 3.67 mmol/L (95% CI: 3.66–3.68) to 3.04 mmol/L (95% CI: 3.03–3.04). Women aged 70–74 years experienced the largest decreases in TC levels corresponding to a decrease of 0.7 mmol/L. The decrease in LDL-C levels was most pronounced in men ≥85 years with a decrease of 0.9 mmol/L. For both genders, TC and LDL-C levels increased with advancing age until around age 50. After menopause the women had higher TC and LDL-C levels than the men. The median (geometric mean) TG level decreased by 0.4 mmol/L from 2001 to 2008, after which it increased slightly by 0.1 mmol/L until 2018. During life the TG levels of the men were markedly higher than the women’s until around age 65–70. HDL-C levels showed no trend during the study period. Conclusions The levels of TC and LDL-C decreased considerably in a statin-free population from primary health care from 2001 to 2018. These decreases were most pronounced in the elderly population and this trend is not decelerating. For TG, levels have started to increase, after an initial decrease.

Lameness, a wellknown issue in sport horses, impedes performance and impairs welfare. Early detection of lameness is essential for horses to receive needed treatment, but detection of hindlimb lameness is challenging. Riding instructors and trainers observe horses in motion in their daily work and could contribute to more efficient lameness detection. In this cross-sectional and prospective study, we evaluated the ability of riding instructors and trainers to assess hindlimb lameness. We also evaluated different feedback methods for improved lameness detection. For the cross-sectional part, n = 64 riding instructors and trainers of varying level and n = 23 high-level trainers were shown 13 videos of trotting horses, lameness degree: 0–3.5 (test 1) and tasked with classifying the horses as sound, left hindlimb lame, or right hindlimb lame. For the prospective part, the riding instructors and trainers of varying levels were randomly allocated to three different groups (a, b, c) and given 14 days of feedback-based, computer-aided training in identifying hindlimb lameness, where they assessed 13 videos (of which three were repeated from test 1) of horses trotting in a straight line. Participants in groups a-c received different feedback after each video (group a: correct answer and re-viewing of video at full and 65% speed; group b: correct answer, re-viewing of video at full and 65% speed, narrator providing explanations; group c: correct answer and re-viewing of video at full speed). After computer-aided training, the participants were again subjected to the video test (test 2). Participants also provided background information regarding level of training etcetera. Effects of participants' background on results were analyzed using analysis of variance, and effects of the different feedback methods were analyzed using generalized estimation equations. On test 1, 44% (group a), 48% (b), 46% (c), and 47% (high-level trainers) of horses were correctly classified. Group a participants significantly improved their test score, both with (p < 0.0001) and without (p = 0.0086) inclusion of repeated videos. For group c, significant improvement was only seen with inclusion of repeated videos (p = 0.041). For group b, no significant improvement was seen (p = 0.51). Although test 2 scores were low, computer-aided training may be useful for improving hindlimb lameness detection.

Objective Prior studies have suggested that self-rated health may be a useful indicator of cardiovascular disease. Consequently, we aimed to assess the relationship between self-rated health, cardiovascular risk factors and subclinical cardiac disease in the Amazon Basin.Design Cross-sectional study.Setting, participants and interventions In participants from the Amazon Basin of Brazil we obtained self-rated health according to a Visual Analogue Scale, ranging from 0 (poor) to 100 (excellent). We performed questionnaires, physical examination and echocardiography. Logistic and linear regression models were applied to assess self-rated health, cardiac risk factors and cardiac disease by echocardiography. Multivariable models were mutually adjusted for other cardiovascular risk factors, clinical and socioeconomic data, and known cardiac disease.Outcome measures Cardiovascular risk factors and subclincial cardiac disease by echocardiography.Results A total of 574 participants (mean age 41 years, 61% female) provided information on self-rated health (mean 75±21 (IQR 60–90) points). Self-rated health (per 10-point increase) was negatively associated with hypertension (OR 0.87 (95% CI 0.78 to 0.97), p=0.01), hypercholesterolaemia (OR 0.89 (95%CI 0.80 to 0.99), p=0.04) and positively with healthy diet (OR 1.13 (95%CI 1.04 to 1.24), p=0.004). Among non-native copepods, the calanoid Pseudodiaptomus marinus Sato, 1913 is the species probably spreading at the fastest pace in European and neighbouring waters since its first record in the Adriatic Sea in 2007. In this contribution, we provide an update on the distribution of P. marinus in the Mediterranean and Black Seas, along the Atlantic coasts of Europe, in the English Channel and in the southern North Sea. Starting from a previous distribution overview, we include here original and recently (2019–2023) published data to show the novel introduction of this species in different geographical areas, and its secondary spreading in already colonised regions. The picture drawn in this work confirms the strong ability of P. marinus to settle in environments characterised by extremely diverse abiotic conditions, and to take advantage of different vectors of introduction. The data presented allow speculations on realistic future introductions of P. marinus and on the potential extension of its distribution range.

The article starts from Gilles Deleuze's assumption of film being a philosophy in its own right and applies it to the horror genre. It reads Stanley Cavell's concept of genre, Timothy Jay Walker's work on the Horror of the Other (1) and Eugene Thacker's understanding of philosophical horror (2). It researches horror film as philosophically relevant access to nothingness (3) and shifts to the operations of assigning places to nothingness according to its respective place of access (off screen, on screen, behind the screen/behind the camera) (4). It then gives short analyses of Midsommar (5), Hereditary (6), Tarantula (7), and The Conjuring (8). In Tarantula, the screen functions as a shield against the agent of nothingness residing behind it. Once surmounted from behind by nothingness, the screen is finally purged. In Hereditary and Midsommar, nothingness is always already here, in full light, constantly transforming everything into nothing. In The Conjuring, the morphings and vectorial movements have nothingness evaporate from the screen to what lies behind it, namely (digital) picture technology. The screen turns into a membrane between nothingness and its condition, technology. As a consequence, we have to switch from philosophical horror to technological horror as access to nothingness (9). AbstractObjectiveDesignSetting and subjectsMain outcome measureResultsConclusionsTo evaluate the impact of a compulsory pop-up form on the ordering pattern of proBNP blood tests by general practitioners in the Capital Region of Denmark.A follow-up study comparing the average number of proBNP tests ordered before and after the implementation of an intervention.From 2016 to 2021, the average number of proBNP tests increased by over 300%. In March 2022, a compulsory pop-up form was introduced in the electronic request system (WebReq), requiring general practitioners to select one of three indications for ordering proBNP, as recommended by the Danish Society of Cardiology. The study included 528 general practitioners in the Capital Region of Denmark, with data available from January 2020 to 2023, encompassing 83,576 proBNP results from 56,645 patients.The average number of proBNP tests ordered per month and the median level of proBNP before and after the intervention.Following the intervention, the average number of proBNP tests per month decreased by 60% over a 22-month follow-up period. The highest reduction was seen among general practitioners who previously ordered the most tests (≥3 per 1000 biochemical tests). In this group, the median proBNP level increased from 12.1 pmol/L before the intervention to 13.5 pmol/L after the intervention (p < 0.0001).This study demonstrates a significant decrease in the number of proBNP requests from general practitioners in the Capital Region of Denmark after the introduction of a pop-up form in the requisition system containing the current guidelines.
