45 patients suffering from carcinomas of the upper airway and digestive tract were studied from an immunological standpoint, by estimation of serum immunoglobulins and by a series of skin tests. This latter technique gave the most interesting results. It showed that immunodepression is statistically more frequent in extensive forms and that the prognosis in immunodepressed patients is much more severe than in those who have retained normal immune reactions.

Publisher Summary This chapter describes the designing of a TV camera tube for coupling to a large aperture telescope for ultraviolet astronomy rocket borne experiments. The photocathode of the camera tube must be matched to the plane image field of the telescope. The main problem in the design of the vidicon section is the photoconductive target. In order to achieve an integration time longer than five min without a significant loss of resolution, the target must be made of a very high bulk resistivity material, and with a very low vacuum surface conductivity. After integration with the same exposure time, different tubes will give different quantities of information. A figure of merit for the information read out is the product of the sensitivity of the tube, the dynamic range, and the square of the linear resolution. The intensifier vidicon should be used for exposure times shorter than about 15 min with a net advantage in dynamic range, linearity and resolution.

In 13 cases of Posner Schlossmann Syndrome, the authors have performed a systematic and full allergologic investigation. They were able to demonstrate in all cases an atopic constitution. The immunity tests in vivo associated with a rhinomanometric inhalation of the responsible allergen have shown positive responses to the pneumallergens and to the streptococcus hemolyticus by the way of a focal infection. In almost all cases secondary syndromic reactions were present. Specific desensitization carefully managed, closely supervised, makes possible in early detected cases the attacks to become less frequent and eventually to disappear.

The fate of fat grafts thicker than 5 mm applied to prevent post-operative peridural fibrosis was followed by CT scanning between the second and fourth months and in later months in four patients treated for lumbar spinal stenosis. The CT scanning findings were verified in two patients who were operated on again. The fat grafts lost thickness and became more even. In one case, the graft had completely disappeared.

A double-blind trial was carried out in 48 patients with allergic disorders to compare the efficacy and tolerance of mequitazine and brompheniramine. Patients received either 10 mg mequitazine or 24 mg brompheniramine daily, divided into 2 doses, for 14 days. The results, analyzed from patients' answers to a questionnaire recorded on a daily basis, showed that mequitazine was at least as effective as brompheniramine and caused significantly less drowsiness throughout the trial period. Few other side-effects were reported.
