Abstract Using pp collision data at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb −1, the forward-backward asymmetry in the pp → Z/γ * → μ + μ − process is measured. The measurement is carried out in ten intervals of the difference between the muon pseudorapidities, within a fiducial region covering dimuon masses between 66 and 116 GeV, muon pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 and muon transverse momenta above 20 GeV. These forward-backward asymmetries are compared with predictions, at next-to-leading order in the strong and electroweak couplings. The measured effective leptonic weak mixing angle is sin 2 θ eff ℓ = 0.23147 ± 0.00044 ± 0.00005 ± 0.00023 , $$ {\sin}^2{\theta}_{\textrm{eff}}^{\ell }=0.23147\pm 0.00044\pm 0.00005\pm 0.00023, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second arises from systematic uncertainties associated with the asymmetry measurement, and the third arises from uncertainties in the fit model used to extract sin 2 θ eff ℓ $$ {\sin}^2{\theta}_{\textrm{eff}}^{\ell } $$ from the asymmetry measurement. This result is based on an arithmetic average of results using the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF31 parameterisations of the proton internal structure, and is consistent with previous measurements and with predictions from the global electroweak fit.

Abstract The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept explores the link between exposure to adverse conditions during fetal and early childhood development and the onset of chronic non-communicable diseases, such as prostate cancer (PCa). Changes in epigenetics that control gene expression have been identified as potential contributors to the developmental origin of PCa. Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), for example, control transposable elements (TEs) and maintain genome integrity in germ cells. However, stress-induced deregulation of TEs warrants investigating the role of piRNAs in the prostate gland from the DOHaD perspective, which remains underexplored. This study aimed to detect and characterize piRNA expression in the ventral prostate (VP) of Sprague Dawley rat offspring at 21 postnatal days (PND21) and PND540. The rats were subjected to maternal protein restriction during pregnancy and lactation to understand its impact on prostate development and aging. Histological analyses showed that the gestational and lactation low-protein diet (GLLP) group experienced a delay in prostate gland development, with increased stromal and epithelial compartments and decreased luminal compartments during early life. Aging in this group resulted in decreased luminal compartments and increased stromal areas. Epithelial atrophy was observed in both groups, with an increased incidence of carcinoma in situ in the GLLP group. Small RNA sequencing from control and restricted groups (at PND21 and PND540) identified piRNA clusters in both young and aged animals. We also detected the expression of PIWI genes (Riwi, Rili, Rili2) in the prostate. Our data highlight the key role of maternal malnutrition in modulating piRNA expression in the offspring’s VP, with the potential to influence prostate developmental biology and the risk of prostatic disorders with aging.

ABSTRACT The literature on attachment is unclear regarding the most appropriate level of measurement for this construct. This study aimed to assess the measurement level of the EBRAPEG-A scale. As a secondary objective, the original 93-item EBRAPEG-A was reduced using data-driven methods and this new reduced version was compared to a 34-item version identified in the literature. A total of 808 Brazilians aged between 18 and 67 years, 82.4% of whom were women, participated in this study. The data-driven reduction method produced a 27-item scale, with factor scores showing a strong correlation with the 34-item version. Taxometric analysis of the 34-item version suggested a slight tendency towards a dimensional model, while the analysis of the 27-item scale was inconclusive. The study discusses how both reduced versions of the EBRAPEG-A can be used to assess the attachment construct as a dimensional variable and outlines expectations for future research.

Introduction and objectives: Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Dapagliflozin has proven efficacy in reducing the risk of death and hospitalization in HF patients, regardless of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). This paper aimed to project the potential impact of dapagliflozin on healthcare costs related to HF subsequent hospitalizations (HFHs) in Portuguese hospitals. Methods: The total number of HF-related hospitalizations (hHF), HFHs, and the average length of stay for patients with a primary diagnosis of HF from six Portuguese hospitals, between January 2019 and December 2021, were collected and aggregated by hospital classification. Costs associated with HFHs were calculated according to Portuguese legislation and considering conservative, average, and complex approaches. Cost-saving projections were based on extrapolations from hHF risk reductions reported in dapagliflozin clinical trials. Results: Considering a 26% risk reduction in hHF reported on pooled-analysis of DAPA-HF and DELIVER as the expected reduction in HFHs, the use of dapagliflozin would be associated with cost savings ranging from EUR 1 612 851.54 up to EUR 6 587 360.09, when considering all hospitals and the different approaches, between 2019 and 2021. A similar projection is observed based on 24% RRR derived by weighting DAPA-HF and DELIVER sub-analyses and PORTHOS epidemiological data. Conclusions: In this projection, dapagliflozin use in all eligible hHF patients is associated with a significant reduction in direct costs. Our data support that, in addition to the improvements in HF-related outcomes, dapagliflozin may have a significant economic impact on healthcare costs in Portuguese hospitals.

Abstract: The radiative decays χc1(3872) → ψ(2S) γ and χc1(3872) → J/ψγ are used to probe the nature of the χc1(3872) state using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1. Using the B+ → χc1(3872)K+ decay, the χc1(3872) → ψ(2S) γ process is observed for the first time and the ratio of its partial width to that of the χc1(3872) → J/ψγ decay is measured to be Γ χ c 1 3872 → ψ 2 S γ Γ χ c 1 3872 → J / ψ γ = 1.67 ± 0.21 ± 0.12 ± 0.04 , $$ \frac{\Gamma_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\to \uppsi \left(2\textrm{S}\right)\gamma }}{\Gamma_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\to \textrm{J}/\uppsi \gamma }}=1.67\pm 0.21\pm 0.12\pm 0.04, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the ψ(2S) and J/ψ mesons. The measured ratio makes the interpretation of the χc1(3872) state as a pure D0 D ¯ ∗ 0 $$ {\overline{\textrm{D}}}^{\ast 0} $$ + D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{\textrm{D}}}^0 $$ D*0 molecule questionable and strongly indicates a sizeable compact charmonium or tetraquark component within the χc1(3872) state.

Adult patients with a clinical diagnosis of dry eye disease were eligible for participation. Each patient underwent corneal epithelial thickness mapping with swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT, Heidelberg Anterion®) and automated ocular surface analysis (IDRA® Ocular Surface Analyzer SBM Sistemi, Italy). Schirmer’s test, tear film osmolarity (by TearLab® Osmolarity System) and Dry-Eye Related Questionnaire (OSDI-12) were also evaluated. Patients were classified accordingly the severity of symptoms in the OSDI-12 in group 1 (mild disease) and group 2 (moderate to severe disease). Results: We enrolled 200 eyes (of 100 subjects): 65 in group 1 and 135 in group 2. Median OSDI and Schirmer’s test in group 1 was 7 vs 46 points, p< 0.001 and 15 vs 11 mm, p=0.007 in group 2. Eyes from group 2 showed higher mean epithelial thickness (48.4 vs 47.1 μm, p=0.027) and lower mean stromal thickness (522.0 vs 546.6 μm, p< 0.001) in comparison with group 1. OSDI score was positively correlated with the mean epithelial thickness (r=0.188, p=0.008) and epithelial variability index (r=0.277, p=0.004) and negatively correlated with the mean stromal thickness (r=− 0.313, p< 0.001). Patients in group 2 showed higher epithelial variability index (4.5 vs 3.2, p< 0.001).Conclusion: Our study suggests that patients with more severe DED symptoms have thicker corneal epithelia and thinner stroma, which may act as a compensatory response. Epithelial variability index is positively correlated with the OSDI score and may reflect DED severity. This is the first study to report stromal thinning in patients with DED, thereby proving novel information regarding the matter. More studies are needed to confirm these results.Plain Language Summary: We have conducted original research regarding the effects of Dry Eye Disease on corneal epithelial and stromal thickness, as evaluated by Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography (Heidelberg Anterion®). Our study is pioneer in showing that patients with more severe symptoms have thicker epithelia with an apparent compensatory stromal thinning. Besides, corneal epithelium seems to have higher variability index in these patients, which appears to correlate with Dry Eye symptom severity. Our results may be helpful to reveal the role of dry eye disease in corneal structural changes. Keywords: dry eye, cornea, epithelium, thickness, anterion

Abstract Objectives To evaluate the acute effect of exposure to a potentiation warm-up protocol compared to a usual warm-up program. Design Randomized parallel control trial. Setting Synthetic grass in the club’s facilities (Portugal). Participants Seventeen female football players (age: 23.9 ± 3.9 years), were randomly allocated to a control (n = 8) and an experimental group (n = 9). To allocate the players, a table was computer-generated by a research team member with no involvement in the trial. Intervention The control group performed their usual warm-up program, while the experimental group performed a potentiation warm-up protocol with jumps combined with sprints with change of direction. Main outcomes measures The players were tested pre- and post-intervention for a 40-m linear sprint and pre-planned change of direction using the T-test. Statistical analysis An intention-to-treat analysis was performed, with all the participants originally randomized being involved. The normal distribution was verified by the Shapiro-Wilk test. The assumption of sphericity was analyzed. Effect sizes were calculated using partial eta squared. Results No significant pre-post differences in the T-test and in the 40-m sprint were detected for any group. However, in the T-test, large effect sizes in time increments were observed within the experimental (0.27 s; p > 0.05, ηp 2 = 0.176) and control groups (0.06 s; p > 0.05, ηp 2 = 0.176). Also, in the 40-m sprint, large effect sizes in time increments were observed within the experimental (0.05 s; p > 0.05, ηp 2 = 0.251) and control groups (0.09 s; p > 0.05, ηp 2 = 0.251). Conclusions The performance-enhancing ability of the potentiation method performed at warm-up was not verified when applied to female football players. Thus, the potentiation methods may not improve sprint and COD ability for this population. However, the lack of statistical significance may have been due to reduced statistical power, as three of four effects suggest acute performance impairment after a supposed potentiation-oriented warm-up. Nevertheless, the presence of a statistical type 2 error cannot be ruled out. Registration number (retrospectively registered) NCT06555185; Project URL: https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT06555185 .

Objectives: To compare the effects of orienteering vs hiking on the physical fitness and quality of life of older adults. Methods: A 24-week randomized controlled trial was conducted with 96 participants who were assigned to orienteering (OG), hiking (HG), or a control group (CG) with no intervention. Physical fitness was assessed with the handgrip strength, chair stand, 6-minute walk, sit-and-reach, and balance tests, with monitoring of blood pressure (BP) and resting heart rate. Generalized Estimating Equations were used for within- and between-group comparisons, with effect sizes (ES) calculated. Baseline and post-intervention differences were assessed using unpaired and paired tests. Results: Significant improvement in balance were observed, with OG reducing their time by -6.23 seconds (29.1%; ES = 0.83) and HG by -2.12 seconds (9.9%; ES = 0.49), p = 0.017. For paired effects, hemodynamic parameters showed a reduction in systolic (p = 0.014) and diastolic (p < 0.001) BP in the OG and in diastolic BP (p < 0.004) in the HG. Interaction effects were significant for all physical fitness and hemodynamic parameters compared with the CG (p < 0.001), with effect sizes ranging from medium to large. Quality of life significantly improved in the intervention groups (p < 0.001) compared with the CG (p = 0.571). Conclusion: Older adults participating in orienteering and hiking experienced improvement in their physical fitness and quality of life, with orienteering showing a greater effect on balance. These activities are valuable for healthy aging programs, as sedentary behavior should be prevented. This trial was registered at the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry (REBEC): RBR-99jmmpf.

Abstract Geographic distribution, as well as evolutionary and biogeographic processes and patterns of marine invertebrate benthic species are strongly shaped by dispersal ability during the life cycle. Remote oceanic islands lie at the brink of complex biotic and abiotic interactions which have significantly influenced the biodiversity patterns we see today. The interaction between geological environmental change and taxon-specific dispersal modes can influence species evolutionary patterns, eventually delimiting species-specific biogeographic regions. In this study, we compare the population genetic patterns of the marine bivalve Cardita calyculata in the northeast Atlantic, discussing the role of Macaronesian islands during past climatic cycles. The genetic structure and diversity patterns were outlined based on SSR-GBAS loci of 165 individuals and on the mitochondrial COI marker of 22 individuals from the Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores and the Mediterranean. The highly structured genetic pattern found among regions and within archipelagos suggests the central role of oceanic islands in promoting the divergence of the species in both the NE Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The high degree of divergence in the COI dataset (> 7%) suggests the existence of potential cryptic speciation that needs to be further explored with a more comprehensive sampling. Such patterns are only congruent with a scenario where C. calyculata populations were maintained during glacial/interglacial cycles, supporting the role of the studied archipelagos as drivers of diversity for marine biota. We stress the importance of developing studies for species with various life history and dispersal modes. In such a way, a more profound understanding of the biogeographic and evolutionary significance of oceanic islands can catalyse directed conservation efforts, especially in the context of the ongoing climate crisis.

Abstract Plasmodium vivax, a challenging species to eliminate, causes millions of malaria cases globally annually. Developing an effective vaccine is crucial in the fight against vivax malaria, but considering the limited number of studies focusing on the identification and development of P. vivax-specific vaccine candidates, exploring new antigens is an urgent need. The merozoite protein CyRPA is essential for P. falciparum growth and erythrocyte invasion and corresponds to a promising candidate antigen. In P. vivax, a single study with multiple vaccine candidates indicates PvCyRPA with strong association with protection, outperforming classic malaria vaccine candidates. However, little is known about the specific naturally acquired response in the Americas, as well as the antigen epitope mapping. For this reason, we aimed to investigate the cellular and humoral immune response elicited against PvCyRPA in Brazilian endemic areas to identify the existence of immunodominant regions and the potential of this protein as a single or even a multi-stage specific malaria vaccine candidate for P. vivax. The results demonstrated that PvCyRPA is naturally immunogenic in Brazilian Amazon individuals previously exposed to malaria, which presented anti-PvCyRPA cytophilic antibodies. Moreover, our data show that the protein also possesses important immunogenic regions with an overlap of B and T cell epitopes. These data reinforce the possibility of including PvCyRPA in vaccine formulations for P. vivax.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains the major cause of premature death and disability; effective cardiovascular (CV) risk prevention is fundamental. The World Heart Federation (WHF) Cholesterol Roadmap provides a framework for national policy development and aims to achieve ASCVD prevention. At the invitation of the WHF, a group of experts from the Portuguese Society of Cardiology (SPC), addressed the cholesterol burden at nationally and discussed possible strategies to include in a Portuguese cholesterol roadmap. The literature review showed that the cholesterol burden in Portugal is high and especially uncontrolled in those with the highest CV risk. An infographic scorecard was built to include in the WHF collection, for a clear idea about CV risk and cholesterol burden in Portugal, which would also be useful for health policy advocacy. The expert discussion and preventive strategies proposal followed the five pillars of the WHF document: awareness improvement; population-based approaches for CV risk and cholesterol; risk assessment/population screening; system-level approaches; surveillance of cholesterol and ASCVD outcomes. These strategies were debated by all the expert participants, with the goal of creating a national cholesterol roadmap to be used for advocacy and as a guide for CV prevention.Several key recommendations were outlined: include all stakeholders in a multidisciplinary national program; create a structured activities plan to increase awareness in the population; improve the quality of continuous CV health education; increase the interaction between different health professionals and non-health professionals; increment the referral of patients to cardiac rehabilitation; screen cholesterol levels in the general population, especially high-risk groups; promote patient self-care, engage with patients’ associations; use specific social networks to spread information widely; create a national database of cholesterol levels with systematic registry of CV events; redefine strategies based on the evaluation of results; create and involve more patients’ associations – invert the pyramid order. In conclusion, ASCVD and the cholesterol burden remain a strong global issue in Portugal, requiring the involvement of multiple stakeholders in prevention. The Portuguese cholesterol roadmap can provide some solutions to help urgently mitigate the problem. Population-based approaches to improve awareness and CV risk assessment and surveillance of cholesterol and ASCVD outcomes are key factors in this change. A call to action is clearly needed to fight hypercholesterolemia and ASCVD burden.

Abstract Background One in six Mexican adults’ lives with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which is the third leading cause of death in the country. Analyzing the geographic distribution of T2DM mortality helps identify regions with higher mortality rates. This study aimed to examine the spatial patterns of mortality from type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) across municipalities in Mexico and to analyze the main contextual factors linked to this cause of death in 2020. Methods We employed a spatial Bayesian hierarchical regression model to estimate the risk and probability of death from type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) across Mexico’s municipalities. Results The SMR results revealed geographic and age-specific patterns. Central Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula exhibited the highest excess mortality rates. For the population under 50 years of age, municipalities in Oaxaca had the highest T2DM mortality rates, whereas those aged 50 years old and older had the highest rates in Tlaxcala and Puebla. Socioeconomic factors such as low levels of educational attainment, lack of health services, dietary deficiency, and marginalization were positively associated with increased T2DM mortality risk. By contrast, GDP per capita showed a negative association. High-risk areas for T2DM mortality were prominent along the south of the Pacific Coast, the Bajío, Central Mexico, and southern Yucatán for those under 50, and along a central strip extending to the Yucatán Peninsula for the older population. Significant uncertainties in mortality risk were identified, with Central Mexico, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco showing high probabilities of excess risk for those under 50 years of age and extended risk areas along the Gulf of Mexico for those 50 years old and older. Conclusions The assessment and identification of spatial distribution patterns associated with T2DM mortality, and its main contextual factors, are crucial for informing effective public health policies aimed at reducing the impact of this chronic disease in Mexico.

The increase in thoracic kyphosis and the decrease in respiratory muscle strength are among the most frequently observed physiological changes in the elderly. The aim of this study was to compare thoracic kyphosis angle and respiratory muscle strength measurements among women who do physical activity with those who do not. METHOD: We evaluated 54 elderly women aged between 60 and 80 years old, and distributed them into two groups: Group 1, with 27 physically active elderly women (71.3 ± 5.1 years old); and Group 2, with 27 elderly women who do not do physical activity (70.2 ± 4.8 years old). Respiratory muscle strength was assessed by maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), and the angle degree of the thoracic kyphosis was measured using the Flexicurva method. For data analysis, we used Pearson's correlation test and Student's t-test, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Group 1participants showed higher values of MIP and MEP when compared to those in Group 2. A possible reason for this result could be the effects of regular physical activity and, specifically, the sport practiced. CONCLUSION: Results suggest that regular participation in physical activity contributes to the maintenance of respiratory muscle strength and delays the increase of the thoracic kyphosis angle in physically active elderly women.
