Abstract

In highly doped semiconductor quantum wells (QWs), electrons populate various energy states from different subbands and, therefore, several optical intersubband transitions (ISBTs) can occur simultaneously. Coulomb coupling between these ISBTs gathers the strength of all the individual transitions and concentrates all the oscillator strength in a single collective excitation: the multisubband plasmon (MSP). MSPs are an excellent platform for the study of collective and exotic effects in semiconductors and for the demonstration of novel device concepts. Indeed, the high electronic densities involved in the collective excitation greatly enhance the coupling strength and enable the ultra-strong coupling regime between MSPs and either optical modes in a cavity or phonons in the semiconductor. In this Perspectives paper, after addressing the basic physics of MSPs and the state of the art, we outline the most promising paths for the research community in this topic from the point of view of basic physics, material platforms, and applications of MSPs. Abstract

Intersubband (ISB) polarons result from the interaction of an ISB transition and the longitudinal optical (LO) phonons in a semiconductor quantum well (QW). Their observation requires a very dense two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the QW and a polar or highly ionic semiconductor. Here we show that in ZnO/MgZnO QWs the strength of such a coupling can be as high as 1.5 times the LO-phonon frequency due to the very dense 2DEG achieved and the large difference between the static and high-frequency dielectric constants in ZnO. The ISB polaron is observed optically in multiple QW structures with 2DEG densities ranging from $5\times 10^{12}$ to $5\times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, where an unprecedented regime is reached in which the frequency of the upper ISB polaron branch is three times larger than that of the bare ISB transition. This study opens new prospects to the exploitation of oxides in phenomena happening in the ultrastrong coupling regime.

Abstract

In this paper we provide new evidence of investor inattention by showing that personal occurrences such as birthdays are able to drive attention away from the stock market. We document that individual investors significantly reduce their trading activity in the 3 days around their birthday. The reduction in the propensity to trade is larger for more active traders, in the event of a decade birthday and when this celebrative event falls on a Friday. Results are robust to analyses focusing only on days when investor attention should be at its peak, as expressed by excess news coverage and trading volumes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background Methods Results Conclusions The selection of patients who are going to be admitted to an emergency department observation unit (EDOU) is essential for the good management of these units, intended fundamentally to avoid unnecessary hospitalization of patients. This is especially important when dealing with older patients. It would be important to know what factors are associated with discharge home and to have a clinical predictive scale that appropriately selects older patients who are going to be admitted to an EDOU.A retrospective cross‐sectional study was conducted of all patients ≥65 years of age assisted in 48 Spanish Emergency Departments for 7 consecutive days and were admitted to the EDOU. Demographics‐functional, vital signs data and initial laboratory results were analyzed to investigate its association with discharge home and develop and validate a prediction model for discharge home from EDOU. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to develop a prediction model, and a scoring system was created.Among 5457 patients admitted to the EDOU from the emergency room, 2508 (46%) patients were discharged home, and 2949 (54%) were admitted to the hospital. Five variables were strongly associated with discharge home: the absence of fever (adjusted OR: 3.61, 95% CI:1.53–8.54), Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15 points (2.80, 1.63–4.82), absence of tachypnea (2.51, 1.74–3.64) or leukocytosis (2.07, 1.70–2.52) and oxygen saturation >94% (2.00, 1.64–2.43). The final model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.648 (IC95% = 0.627–0.668) in the development cohort and 0.635 (0.614–0.656) in the validation cohort.There are factors associated with a greater probability of discharge home of older patients admitted to EDOUs. Prediction at the individual level remains elusive, as the best model obtained in this study did not have sufficient validity to be applied in the clinical setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In order to gain insights on the conditions of aqueous alteration on asteroid Ryugu and the origin of water in the outer solar system, we developed the measurement of water content in magnetite at the micrometer scale by secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) and determined the H and Si content of coarse‐grained euhedral magnetite grains (polyhedral magnetite) and coarse‐grained fibrous (spherulitic) magnetite from the Ryugu polished section A0058‐C1001. The hydrogen content in magnetite ranges between ~900 and ~3300 wt ppm equivalent water and is correlated with the Si content. Polyhedral magnetite has low and homogenous silicon and water content, whereas fibrous magnetite shows correlated Si and water excesses. These excesses can be explained by the presence of hydrous Si‐rich amorphous nanoinclusions trapped during the precipitation of fibrous magnetite away from equilibrium and testify that fibrous magnetite formed from a hydrous gel with possibly more than 20 wt% water. An attempt to determine the water content in sub‐μm framboids indicates that additional calibration and contamination issues must be addressed before a safe conclusion can be drawn, but hints at elevated water content as well. The high water content in fibrous magnetite, expected to be among the first minerals to crystallize at low water–rock ratio, points to the control of water content by local conditions of magnetite precipitation rather than large‐scale alteration conditions. Systematic lithological variations associated with water‐rich and water‐poor magnetite suggest that the global context of alteration may be better understood if local water concentrations are compared with millimeter‐scale distribution of the various morphologies of magnetite. Finally, the high water content in the magnetite precursor gel indicates that the initial O isotopic composition in alteration water must not have been very different from that of the earliest magnetite crystals. Abstract

We report Nd and Sm isotopic compositions of four samples of Ryugu returned by the Hayabusa2 mission, including "A" (first touchdown) and "C" (second touchdown) samples, and several carbonaceous chondrites to evaluate potential genetic relationships between Ryugu and known chondrite groups and track the cosmic ray exposure history of Ryugu. We resolved Nd and Sm isotopic anomalies in small (<20 ng Nd and Sm) sample sizes via thermal ionization mass spectrometer using 1013 Ω amplifiers. Ryugu samples exhibit resolvable negative μ142Nd values consistent with carbonaceous chondrite values, suggesting that Ryugu is related to the parent bodies of carbonaceous chondrites. Ryugu's negative μ149Sm values are the result of exposure to galactic cosmic rays, as demonstrated by the correlation between 150Sm/152Sm and 149Sm/152Sm ratios that fall along the expected neutron capture correlation line. The neutron fluence calculated in the "A" samples (2.75 ± 1.94 × 1015 n cm−2) is slightly higher compared to the "C" samples (0.95 ± 2.04 × 1015 n cm−2), though overlapping within measurement uncertainty. The Sm results for Ryugu, at this level of precision, thus are consistent with a well‐mixed surface layer at least to the depths from which the "A" and "C" samples derive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background/Objectives: Develop a clinical and genetic characterization, in a group of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) patients who did not experience catch-up growth Methods: In an ambispective cohort study with (SGA) patients. These patients received one treatment with growth hormone (GH) over 14 years. This study analyzes their response to treatment and conducts a genetic analysis in order to identify cases with specific phenotypic and auxological characteristics, defined as presenting two or more dysmorphic traits and/or a stature below −3 SDS (standard deviation score). Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed on selected patients. Results: Forty-four SGA patients were examined, with an average age of 6.4 (2.49) years and an initial size of −3.3 SDS. The pubertal growth was 24.1 (5.2) cm in boys and 14.7 (4.3) cm in girls. WES in 11 SGA patients revealed conclusive genetic variants in eight, including two pathogenic ACAN variants, one 15q26.2-q26.3 deletion, and four variants of uncertain significance in other genes. Conclusions: Treatment with GH in SGA patients was shown to be effective, with a similar response in the group with positive genetic results and in the group who did not undergo a genetic study. 187. Interactional Context Mediates the Consequences of Bilingualism for Language and Cognition

Abstract

Proficient bilinguals use two languages actively, but the contexts in which they do so may differ dramatically. The present study asked what consequences the contexts of language use hold for the way in which cognitive resources modulate language abilities. Three groups of speakers were compared, all of whom were highly proficient Spanish-English bilinguals who differed with respect to the contexts in which they used the two languages in their everyday lives. They performed two lexical production tasks and the "AX" variant of the Continuous Performance Task (AX-CPT), a nonlinguistic measure of cognitive control. Results showed that lexical access in each language, and how it related to cognitive control ability, depended on whether bilinguals used their languages separately or interchangeably or whether they were immersed in their second language. These findings suggest that even highly proficient bilinguals who speak the same languages are not necessarily alike in the way in which they engage cognitive resources. Findings support recent proposals that being bilingual does not, in itself, identify a unique pattern of cognitive control. An important implication is that much of the controversy that currently surrounds the consequences of bilingualism may be understood, in part, as a failure to characterize the complexity associated with the context of language use.

Abstract

Background. In kidney transplant recipients, there is discordance between the development of cellular and humoral response after vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. We sought to determine the interplay between the 2 arms of adaptive immunity in a 3-dose course of mRNA-1273 100 μg vaccine. Methods. Humoral (IgG/IgM) and cellular (N- and S-ELISpot) responses were studied in 117 kidney and 12 kidney-pancreas transplant recipients at the following time points: before the first dose, 14 d after the second dose‚ and before and after the third dose, with a median of 203 and 232 d after the start of the vaccination cycle, respectively. Results. After the second dose, 26.7% of naive cases experienced seroconversion. Before the third dose and in the absence of COVID-19, this percentage increased to 61.9%. After the third dose, seroconversion occurred in 80.0% of patients.
