193. The afterglow of GW170817 from every angle: Prospects for detecting the afterglows of binary neutron star mergers

Abstract

To date GW170817, produced by a binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is the only gravitational wave event with an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. It was associated with a prompt short gamma-ray burst (GRB), an optical kilonova, and the afterglow of a structured, off-axis relativistic jet. We model the prospects for future mergers discovered in gravitational waves to produce detectable afterglows. Using a model fit to GW170817, we assume all BNS mergers produce jets with the same parameters, and model the afterglow luminosity for a full distribution of observer angles, ISM densities, and distances. We find that in the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA O4 run, 30% - 45% of BNS mergers with a well-localized counterpart will have an afterglow detectable with current instrumentation in the X-ray, radio and optical. Without a previously detected counterpart, 10% - 15% will have an afterglow detectable by wide-area radio and optical surveys, compared to only about 5% - 12% of events expected to have bright (on-axis) gamma-ray emission. Most afterglows that are detected will be from off-axis jets. Further in the future, in the A+ era (O5), 40% - 50% of mergers will have afterglows detectable with next-generation X-ray and radio instruments. Future wide-area radio survey instruments, particularly DSA-2000, could detect 40% of afterglows, even without a kilonova counterpart. Finding and monitoring these afterglows will provide valuable insight into the structure and diversity of relativistic jets, the rate at which mergers produce jets, and constrain the angle of the mergers relative to our line of sight., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Abstract

Rectification describes the generation of a quasistatic component from an oscillating field, such as an electric polarization in optical rectification, or a structural distortion in nonlinear phononic rectification. Here, we present a third fundamental process for magnetization, in which spin precession is rectified along the coordinates of a nonlinearly driven magnon mode in an antiferromagnet. We demonstrate theoretically that a quasistatic magnetization can be induced by transient spin canting in response to the coherent excitation of a chiral phonon mode that produces an effective magnetic field for the spins. This mechanism, which we call nonlinear magnonic rectification, is generally applicable to magnetic systems that exhibit infrared-active chiral phonon modes. Our results serve as an example of light-induced weak ferromagnetism and open a promising avenue towards creating dynamical spin configurations that are not accessible in equilibrium.

Stars evolving around a supermassive black hole see their orbital orientations diffuse efficiently, a process called "vector resonant relaxation". In particular, stars within the same disc, i.e. neighbors in orientations, will slowly diffuse away from one another through this stochastic process. We use jointly (i) detailed kinetic predictions for the efficiency of this dilution and (ii) the recent observation of a stellar disc around SgrA*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky-Way, to constrain SgrA*'s unobserved stellar cluster. Abstract

Evidence of the negative impact of light pollution on ecosystems is increasing every year. Its monitoring and study requires the identification, characterisation and control of the emitting sources. This is the case of urban centres with outdoor lighting that spills light outside the place it is intended to illuminate. The quantity and nature of the pollutant (artificial light at night) depends on the lamps used and how they are positioned. This is important because a greater proportion of blue light means a greater scattering effect. In this study, we analysed the emissions of 100 urban centres in the north of Granada province (Spain), using International Space Station (ISS) images from 2012 and 2021, in order to compare the results with public lighting inventories and verify the validity of these data for characterising night-time lighting emissions. Using inference and cluster analysis techniques, we confirmed an overall increase in emissions and a shift in their colour towards blue, consistent with the results of the lighting inventory analysis. We concluded that it is possible to use ISS imagery to characterise artificial light emissions and the lighting that causes them, none the less there are a number of inherent problems with the data and the way it was collected that require the results to be interpreted with caution.

Abstract

Recent experimental studies have demonstrated the possibility of utilizing strong terahertz pulses to manipulate individual ferroic orders on pico- and femtosecond timescales. Here, we extend these findings and showcase the simultaneous manipulation of multiple ferroic orders in BiFeO$_3$, a material that is both ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic at room temperature. We find a concurrent enhancement of ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic second-harmonic generation (SHG) following the resonant excitation of a high-frequency fully-symmetric phonon mode. Based on first-principles calculations and phenomenological modeling, we ascribe this observation to the inherent coupling of the two ferroic orders to the nonequilibrium distortions induced in the crystal lattice by nonlinearly driven phonons. Our finding highlights the potential of nonlinear phononics as a technique for manipulating multiple ferroic order parameters at once. In addition, this approach provides a promising avenue to studying the dynamical magnetization and polarization behavior, as well as their intrinsic coupling, on ultrashort timescales., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

We determine for which exotic tori $\mathcal{T}$ of dimension $d\neq4$ the homomorphism from the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of $\mathcal{T}$ to ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$ given by the action on the first homology group is split surjective. As part of the proof we compute the mapping class group of all exotic tori $\mathcal{T}$ that are obtained from the standard torus by a connected sum with an exotic sphere. Moreover, we show that any nontrivial ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$-action on $\mathcal{T}$ agrees on homology with the standard action, up to an automorphism of ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$. Discovering new neutrino interactions would represent evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. We focus on new flavor-dependent long-range neutrino interactions mediated by ultra-light mediators, with masses below $10^{-10}$ eV, introduced by new lepton-number gauge symmetries $L_e-L_\mu$, $L_e-L_\tau$, and $L_\mu-L_\tau$. Because the interaction range is ultra-long, nearby and distant matter - primarily electrons and neutrons - in the Earth, Moon, Sun, Milky Way, and the local Universe, may source a large matter potential that modifies neutrino oscillation probabilities. The upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and the Tokai-to-Hyper-Kamiokande (T2HK) long-baseline neutrino experiments will provide an opportunity to search for these interactions, thanks to their high event rates and well-characterized neutrino beams. We forecast their probing power. Our results reveal novel perspectives. Alone, DUNE and T2HK may strongly constrain long-range interactions, setting new limits on their coupling strength for mediators lighter than $10^{-18}$ eV. However, if the new interactions are subdominant, then both DUNE and T2HK, together, will be needed to discover them, since their combination lifts parameter degeneracies that weaken their individual sensitivity. Abstract

The discovery of new, flavor-dependent neutrino interactions would provide compelling evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. We focus on interactions generated by the anomaly-free, gauged, abelian lepton-number symmetries, specifically $L_e-L_\mu$, $L_e-L_\tau$, and $L_\mu-L_\tau$, that introduce a new matter potential sourced by electrons and neutrons, potentially impacting neutrino flavor oscillations. We revisit, revamp, and improve the constraints on these interactions that can be placed via the flavor composition of the diffuse flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, with TeV-PeV energies, i.e., the proportion of $\nu_e$, $\nu_\mu$, and $\nu_\tau$ in the flux. Because we consider mediators of these new interactions to be ultra-light, lighter than $10^{-10}$ eV, the interaction range is ultra-long, from km to Gpc, allowing vast numbers of electrons and neutrons in celestial bodies and the cosmological matter distribution to contribute to this new potential. We leverage the present-day and future sensitivity of high-energy neutrino telescopes and of oscillation experiments to estimate the constraints that could be placed on the coupling strength of these interactions. We find that, already today, the IceCube neutrino telescope demonstrates potential to constrain flavor-dependent long-range interactions significantly better than existing constraints, motivating further analysis. We also estimate the improvement in the sensitivity due to the next-generation neutrino telescopes such as IceCube-Gen2, Baikal-GVD, KM3NeT, P-ONE, and TAMBO., Comment: 46 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables, 6 appendices.
