Hepatitis E is a self-limited enterically transmitted acute viral hepatitis that occurs frequently in epidemic outbreaks and as sporadic hepatitis in many tropical and subtropical countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalance of hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies in rural and urban areas in Erzurum. A total of 340 sera were collected from people with different socio-economic levels and age groups. Sera were examined for IgG to HEV using a commercially ELISA kit. HEV seroprevalance was found to be 10.3%. This value was 11.8% in the group of low socio-economic level and 8.8% in the group of high socio-economic level. In respect of prevalence, there was no significant difference among groups of socio-economic level, sex, and age (p> 0.05). As a result, HEV seroprevalance rate was found higher in Erzurum than average in Turkey. more...
