I denna uppsats undersöks om motivationen att arbeta på matematiklektionerna kan ökas genom kooperativt lärande. Undersökningen har genomförts med hjälp av aktionsforskning i en niondeklass under höstterminen 2018. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att de kooperativa metoderna upplevdes som positiva både för elevernas lärande och för klassens sociala situation. Formen på övningar som Speed dating och Bygg en triangel verkade inkluderande för osäkra elever, samtidigt som det matematiska innehållet i övningarna var utmanande för samtliga. Under försöksperioden gjordes det observationer i klassen och efter försöksperioden användes enkäter och intervjuer för utvärdering. Resultaten diskuteras i ljuset av bland annat Self determination theory. Uppsatsens slutsats är att elevernas motivation har ökat genom att kooperativa metoder använts under matematiklektionerna.

To stimulate the formation of new cross-disciplinary translational research team collaborations and innovative pilot projects, the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) CTSA—South Carolina Clinical & Translational Research (SCTR) Institute—has initiated biannual scientific retreats often with speed dating style networking sessions. The themes of the retreats are cross-disciplinary, address unmet medical needs in South Carolina (SC) and beyond, stimulate formation of new cross-disciplinary teams, and are anticipated to generate pilot project and extramural grant applications related to novel translational research discoveries, technologies, and methodologies. The retreat format is designed to stimulate new research ideas and exchange in small groups to develop new research projects. The retreats are complemented by the SCTR Institute Pilot Project Program funds to support innovative pilot projects that emanate from the retreats. This chapter describes the design of the retreats, scientific impacts such as novel scientific collaborations and projects that the retreats have stimulated, challenges, and strategies for success.

Traditional recommender systems suggest items by learning from user preferences, but ignore other stakeholders in the whole system. Actually, not only the receiver of the recommendations, but also other stakeholders may come into play, such as the producers of items or those of the system owners. Reciprocal recommender system in dating or job recommendations is one of these examples. However, we may have to simulate the utilities for each type of the stakeholder due to the utility definitions. In this paper, we perform exploratory analysis on a speed-dating data, where the user expectations are clearly defined. We try to build a multi-dimensional utility framework by utilizing multi-criteria ratings. We further analyze the relationship between the utilities and recommendation performance, and achieve a tradeoff as the optimal solution. Even more, the proposed approach is able to outperform the exiting reciprocal recommendation algorithms in precision, recall and overall utilities. Finally, we derive a promising way to define and optimize utilities to be generalized in other applications or domains.

Housing quality can impact quality of life factors such as physical health and finances. However, prospective tenants lack critical information about things like utility costs and landlord quality. Our contribution is a series of three studies exploring the complexities of the information economy around rental housing, including information available to landlords but not tenants, as well as information tenants may not prioritize until after lease signing about their own desires. Our first mixed methods study demonstrates that tenants cannot easily predict factors impacting the quality of life when selecting a rental and need better information about rental housing and the overall rental system. Using speed dating, we explore scenarios premised on information sharing and quality of life to analyze risks and rewards of crowdsourced information collection and sharing within a multi-stakeholder peer-to-peer rental search system. Finally, we present eDigs, a rental search system we have deployed to enhance the information economy for prospective tenants using a combination of opinion, implicit observation, and communal information. We also explore user responses to the system.

Modern Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) support job searches, resume creation, career development, and professional self-presentation. However, these technological tools are often tailored to high-income, highly educated users and white-collar professionals. It is unclear what interventions address the needs of job seekers who have limited resources or education, or who may be underserved in other ways. We gathered insights from the literature and generated ten tangible design concepts to address the needs of underserved job seekers. We then conducted a needs validation and speed dating study to understand which concepts were most viable among our population. We found that the three most preferred concepts immediately addressed job seekers' social and personal needs, where addressing social needs meant mediating job seekers' connections to others and supporting our job seekers' limited access to strong ties.

The present study employed a real-life speed-dating methodology with three conditions: a face-to-face (FTF) condition, a video-mediated communication (VMC) condition without eye-contact (Skype) and a VMC condition with eye-contact (an Eye-Catcher). The first aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eye-contact on the development of romantic attraction. Second, this study analysed the role of four interactive uncertainty reduction strategies (URSs) in the relationship between eye-contact and romantic attraction, namely (intimacy of) self-disclosure and (intimacy of) question asking. The results revealed no direct effect of eye-contact on romantic attraction. Moreover, there were more (intimate) self-disclosures in conditions with eye-contact, but fewer (intimate) questions asked. These findings suggest that communication conditions with eye-contact result in less information-seeking behaviour, in terms of question asking. However, people share more personal, intimate information about themselves to their interaction partner. Conclusively, eye-contact in initial interactions induces less uncertainty and more intimacy, compared to interactions without eye-contact.

Dendritic filopodia select synaptic partner axons by interviewing the cell surface of potential targets, but how filopodia decipher the complex pattern of adhesive and repulsive molecular cues to find appropriate contacts is unknown. Here we demonstrate in cortical neurons that a single cue is sufficient for dendritic filopodia to reject or select specific axonal contacts for elaboration as synaptic sites. Super-resolution and live-cell imaging reveals that EphB2 is located in the tips of filopodia and at nascent synaptic sites. Surprisingly, a genetically encoded indicator of EphB kinase activity, unbiased classification, and a photoactivatable EphB2 reveal that simple differences in the kinetics of EphB kinase signaling at the tips of filopodia mediate the choice between retraction and synaptogenesis. This may enable individual filopodia to choose targets based on differences in the activation rate of a single tyrosine kinase, greatly simplifying the process of partner selection and suggesting a general principle.

How do people in a romantic matching situation choose a potential partner? We study this question in a new model of matching under search frictions, which we estimate using data from an existing speed dating experiment. We find that attraction is mostly in the eye of the beholder and that the attraction between two potential partners has a tendency to be mutual. These results are supported by a direct measure of subjective attraction. We also simulate the estimated model, and it predicts rejection patterns, matching rates, and sorting outcomes that fit the data very well. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that people in a dating environment act strategically and have at least an implicit understanding of the nature of the frictions and of the strategic equilibrium.

In this paper, we demonstrate the importance of combinations of facial expressions and their timing, in explaining a person's conversational skills in a series of brief non-romantic conversations. Video recordings of 365 four-minute conversations before and after a randomized intervention were analyzed in which facial action units (AUs) were examined over different time segments. Male subjects (N=47) were evaluated in their conversation skills using the Conversational Skills Rating Scale (CSRS). A linear regression model was used to compare the importance of AU features from different time segments in predicting CSRS ratings. In the first minute of conversation, CSRS ratings were best predicted by activity levels in action units associated with speaking (Lips part, AU25). In the last minute of conversation, affective indicators associated with expressions of laughter (Jaw Drop, AU26) and warmth (Happy faces) emerged as the most important. These findings suggest that feedback on nonverbal skills must dynamically account for shifting goals of conversation.

Initial romantic attraction has important implications for the development of romantic relationships. Much research demonstrates that physical attractiveness predicts initial romantic attraction. However, less is known about the influence of individual difference characteristics on initial romantic attraction. Here we examined whether dispositional mindfulness predicted initial romantic attraction beyond the effects of physical attractiveness in a speed-dating experiment. Women were more attracted to men higher in dispositional mindfulness, beyond the effects of physical attractiveness. Men were more attracted to women who were more physically attractive, but female mindfulness did not influence male initial attraction. This is the first study to examine the role of dispositional mindfulness in predicting initial romantic attraction.

Drawing upon the semi-structured interviews with 15 men aged 30–54, this chapter explores men’s experiences of speed dating. Beginning with theories of partner choice, the chapter engages with the ways that men navigate speed dating events by focusing on their anxiety and vulnerability. This provides a pretext for the articulation and demonstration of particular speed dating masculinities. On the one hand, there are men who take up a predatory heterosexual script. On the other, there are men who use speed dating events as a means to find a long-term partner. Interestingly, men looking for partners make up the majority of those who attending speed dating. Such men had a number of strategies that they would draw upon to choose a potential partner, or in their words, ‘the right kind of woman’. These strategies involved reviewing and evaluating women’s appearance and manner and establishing whether the women that they were meeting were ‘telling the truth’. Thus, men would use such strategies to evaluate the quality of the date. The chapter concludes by suggesting that although men in this sample tended to hold onto traditional gendered attitudes, it was clear that the speed dating event exacerbated men’s insecurities and anxieties.

Context influences decision making. However, evidence on the specific underlying mechanism is scarce. Since context dependence in decision making may impact consumers, firms and political agenda setters, exploring the precise mechanism through which choices are distorted is imperative. This paper provides evidence that expanding the utility range of one choice dimension leads decision makers to attach less weight to this attribute, in line with the notion of relative thinking. Context dependence is more pronounced if evaluators are female and survives extensive robustness checks. Implications for policy are discussed.

Previous studies in laboratorial settings suggest that the visualization of attractive and unattractive photographs influences time. The major aim of this research is to study time perception and attraction in a realistic social scenario, by investigating if changes in subjective time measured during a speed dating are associated with attraction. In the event, the duration of the dates was variable and participants had to estimate the time that passed. Among other measures, participants also rated the potential partners in terms of their physical attractiveness before and after the dates and reported if they would like to exchange contact with them. Results showed that, in a real speed dating situation, when there is a perception of the partner as being physically more attractive, women tend to overestimate the duration of that meeting, whereas men tend to underestimate its duration. Such changes may reflect evolutionary adaptations which make the human cognitive system more responsive in situations related to reproductive fitness., O que acontece quando inesperadamente vemos um potencial parceiro atraente? Estudos anteriores em contexto laboratorial sugerem que a visualização de fotografias de pessoas atraentes e não atraentes influencia a perceção do tempo. O objetivo principal desta investigação é estudar a relação entre perceção temporal e a atração num cenário mais realista, investigando se alterações no tempo subjetivo durante um speed dating estão associadas com a atração. No evento, a duração dos encontros era variável e os participantes tinham que estimar o tempo que passou. Além disso, entre outras medidas, os participantes avaliaram os potenciais parceiros em termos da sua atratividade física antes e depois dos encontros e reportaram se estavam interessados em trocar contacto com eles. Os resultados mostraram que, numa situação de speed dating real, quando há a perceção do parceiro como sendo fisicamente mais atraente, as mulheres tendem a estimar a duração do encontro como sendo maior, enquanto que os homens tendem a estimar a duração como sendo menor. Estas alterações podem refletir adaptações evolutivas que tornam o sistema cognitivo humano mais responsivo em situações relacionadas com o fitness reprodutivo.

Intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) are commonly designed to enhance student learning. However, they are not typically designed to meet the needs of teachers who use them in their classrooms. ITSs generate a wealth of analytics about student learning and behavior, opening a rich design space for real-time teacher support tools such as dashboards. Whereas real-time dashboards for teachers have become popular with many learning technologies, we are not aware of projects that have designed dashboards for ITSs based on a broad investigation of teachers' needs. We conducted design interviews with ten middle school math teachers to explore their needs for on-the-spot support during blended class sessions, as a first step in a user-centered design process of a real-time dashboard. Based on multi-methods analyses of this interview data, we identify several opportunities for ITSs to better support teachers' needs, noting that the analytics commonly generated by existing teacher support tools do not strongly align with the analytics teachers expect to be most useful. We highlight key tensions and tradeoffs in the design of such real-time supports for teachers, as revealed by "Speed Dating" possible futures with teachers. This paper has implications for our ongoing co-design of a real-time dashboard for ITSs, as well as broader implications for the design of ITSs that can effectively collaborate with teachers in classroom settings.

Information Systems (IS) pedagogy research supports the use of collaborative learning strategies that are based on the belief that learning increases when students work together to solve problems and develop cooperative learning skills. The use of innovative active learning approaches instead of lecture-based approaches have helped to engage student learning and build a broader range of skills and experiences (e.g., [1, 2]). In this project, we present an empirical comparison of two active learning classroom approaches - the speed dating method and a traditional presentation format. The speed dating method supports low-cost rapid comparison of project ideas, design, application and progress in a structured and bounded series of serial engagements. In contrast, traditional student presentations allow individuals to provide content but offer somewhat limited interactions. We analyzed data from 174 student surveys and in-class researcher observations of student engagement in an undergraduate senior capstone course entitled, Innovation in Information Systems. The course is centered on studio-based learning as assignments are primarily project-based, students' work is periodically evaluated through critiques, and students continuously engage in critiquing peers' work [3]. The course utilized an alternating series of speed dating and presentation session formats. Our analysis resulted in three main findings. First, students reported receiving and giving much more helpful feedback during the speed dating sessions than in the presentation sessions. Second, students reported being significantly more engaged during the speed dating sessions than in the presentation sessions Finally, classroom observations of engagement showed that students were significantly more engaged in the speed dating session as compared to the presentation session [4]. We believe these findings demonstrate that the speed dating method is a more effective alternative to a presentation format and is a useful complement to other collaborative learning methodologies.

We provide an empirical test of contrast effects—a bias where a decision maker perceives information in contrast to what preceded it—in the quasi-experimental context of speed dating decisions. We document that prior partner attractiveness reduces the subsequent likelihood of an affirmative dating decision. This relationship is confined to recent interactions, consistent with a perceptual error, but not learning or the presence of a quota in affirmative responses. The contrast effect is driven almost entirely by male evaluators. Additional evidence documents the effect's linearity with respect to prior partner attractiveness, its amplification for partners of moderate attractiveness, and its partial attenuation with accumulated experience. © 2014 The President and Fellows of Harvard College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Doing all this in the middle of an already overscheduled day when you'd rather be going to class to learn, finishing lab reports, or just being out throwing a ball around, is a rather unappealing option. Do not despair! Having toiled on both sides-from selling myself to employers, to selling my employers on prospective candidates-I proffer a few suggestions that will make this season's career fair, as well as any on-the-spot or next-day interviews, much less stressful and allow you to get the most out of them!

This chapter starts with an excursus on the meaning of the term ‘partner market’, due to the fact that there is little systematic conceptualization of either ‘partner market’ in empirical research, or of the basic term ‘market’ itself in sociology as a whole. Deriving a Weberian concept of the market as competition for exchange chances, a relational definition of the partner market will be developed. Based on this definition, and findings from research and qualitative interview material, it will be shown that online dating markets are not at all an exceptional phenomenon in the context of couple formation. It will be shown that dating site can be analytically located within a continuum alongside conventional partner markets such as night clubs, offline ‘lonely hearts’ ads and speed dating events. Online dating sites seem to be, in comparison to other contexts of interaction, strongly structured by market principles such as competition for partners, induction of conscious rational mate choice, and exchange logics. Thus, it will be argued that the ‘real type’ market of online dating can be seen as being especially close to an ‘ideal-typical’ partner market and, thus, as a paradigmatic textbook example for analyses in the tradition of individualistic mate choice.

To stimulate the formation of new interdisciplinary translational research teams and innovative pilot projects, the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research (SCTR) Institute (South Carolina Clinical and Translational Science Award, CTSA) initiated biannual scientific retreats with ‘speed dating’ networking sessions. Retreat themes were prioritized based on the following criteria; cross-cutting topic, unmet medical need, generation of novel technologies and methodologies. Each retreat begins with an external keynote speaker followed by a series of brief research presentations by local researchers focused on the retreat theme, articulating potential areas for new collaborations. After each session of presentations, there is a 30 min scientific ‘speed dating’ period during which the presenters meet with interested attendees to exchange ideas and discuss collaborations. Retreat attendees are eligible to compete for pilot project funds on the topic of the retreat theme. The 10 retreats held have had a total of 1004 participants, resulted in 61 pilot projects with new interdisciplinary teams, and 14 funded projects. The retreat format has been a successful mechanism to stimulate novel interdisciplinary research teams and innovative translational research projects. Future retreats will continue to target topics of cross-cutting importance to biomedical and public health research.
