We experimentally investigate the wavelength effect on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in CH(4) molecules and Xe atoms driven by a tunable infrared parametric source, and observe that the molecular HHG around the vibrational resonance is more sensitive to the driver wavelength than HHG from an atomic gas with comparable ionization potential. The results can be attributed to the light nuclear motion induced by the driving laser field, and it becomes possible to control the proton vibration in the molecular HHG by tuning the infrared wavelength of the driving laser., ((c) 2009 Optical Society of America)

Self-compression and spectral supercontinuum (SC) generated by filamentation of femtosecond laser pulses with duration from 45 fs down to 6 fs in argon gas have been numerically investigated. A 45-fs pulse can be self-compressed into a few-cycle pulse with duration of 12 fs at the post-filamentation region. By properly employing a high-pass filter to select the broadening high-frequency spectra which are almost in phase, the pulse can be further shortened to about 7 fs. By contrast, a 6-fs pulse cannot be further self-compressed into a shorter pulse by filamentation although it can generate much broader SC extending from 200 nm to 1300 nm. It is also found that a separate and strong SC in the ultraviolet (UV) region extending from 220 nm to 300 nm and peaked at about 255 nm can be generated at proper propagation distances, which corresponds to a pulse with duration of about 5 fs.

We propose a scheme to compensate dynamically the intrinsic chirp of the attosecond harmonic pulses. By adding a weak second harmonic laser field to the driving laser field, the chirp compensation can be varied from the negative to the positive continuously by simply adjusting the relative time delay between the two-color pulses. Using this technique, the compensation of the negative chirp in harmonic emission is demonstrated experimentally for the first time and the nearly transform-limited attosecond pulse trains are obtained.

We theoretically investigate the quantum-path interference during the high harmonic generation in argon and observe the multi-quantum- path-interference (MQPI) effect related to the chirp of driving laser pulse. We successfully identify the interference originated from four significantly contributing quantum paths in the interaction of "isolated" atom with the driving laser field. Moreover, the MQPI effect is further demonstrated beyond the single atom response by spatial filtering which is used for angle-selective detection of transmitted light when three-dimensional propagation is considered. It implies that the role of high-order electron returning trajectories during high harmonic generation can be observed in the experiment.

The structure of the inhibition patterns is important to the stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy. Usually, Laguerre- Gaussian (LG) beam and the central zero-intensity patterns created by inserting phase masks in Gaussian beams are used as the erase beam in STED microscopy. Aberration is generated when focusing beams through an interface between the media of the mismatched refractive indices. By use of the vectorial integral, the effects of such aberration on the shape of depletion patterns and the size of fluorescence emission spot in the STED microscopy are studied. Results are presented as a comparison between the aberration-free case and the aberrated cases.

A novel scheme to eliminate the artificial background phase jitter is proposed for measuring the carrier-envelope phase drift of tunable infrared femtosecond pulses from an OPA laser. Different from previous methods, a reference spectral interference measurement is performed, which reveals the artificial phase jitter in the measurement process, in addition to the normal f-to-2f interference measurement between the incident laser pulses and it second harmonic. By analyzing the interference fringes, the accurate CEP fluctuation of the incident pulses is obtained.

A spectral-filter method is numerically demonstrated to obtain sub-5 fs pulses by using femtosecond filamentation in fused silica. Instead of employing spectral phase compensation, by properly employing a high-pass filter to select the broadened high-frequency spectra that are located almost in phase in the tailing edge of the self-compressed pulses owing to self-steepening, as short as single-cycle pulses can be obtained. For instance, for an input pulse with a duration of 50 fs and energy 2.2 microJ, the minimum pulse duration can reach to approximately 4 fs (about 1.5 cycles) by applying a proper spectral filter.

Extracellular calcium is essential for neurotransmitter release, but the detailed mechanism by which Ca2+ regulates basal synaptic release has not yet been fully explored. In this study, calcium imaging and the whole-cell patch-clamp technique were used to investigate the role of Ca2+ in basal acetylcholine (ACh) release in the Xenopus neuromuscular junction and in isolated myocytes exogenously loaded with ACh. Carried out in normal and Ca2+-free extracellular solution, the results indicate that Ca2+ near the release site is essential for basal neurotransmitter release.

Two-dimensional periodic nanostructures on ZnO crystal surface were fabricated by two-beam interference of 790 nm femtosecond laser. The long period is, as usually reported, determined by the interference pattern of two laser beams. Surprisingly, there is another short periodic nanostructures with periods of 220-270 nm embedding in the long periodic structures. We studied the periods, orientation, and the evolution of the short periodic nanostructures, and found them analogous to the self-organized nanostructures induced by single fs laser beam.

We experimentally demonstrate the generation of an extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) supercontinuum in argon with a two-color laser field consisting of an intense 7 fs pulse at 800 nm and a relatively weak 37 fs pulse at 400 nm. By controlling the relative time delay between the two laser pulses, we observe enhanced high-order harmonic generation as well as spectral broadening of the supercontinuum. A method to produce isolated attosecond pulses with variable width and intensity is proposed.

We theoretically demonstrate the generation of extreme ultraviolet supercontinua in an orthogonally polarized two-color few-cycle laser field. We show that the ionized electrons can be driven back to their parent ion after traveling along curved trajectories in a plane perpendicular to the beam propagation direction, giving rise to a train of attosecond pulses at different polarization angles. A single isolated attosecond pulse can be obtained by blocking the low-order high harmonics, which contribute to the formation of the satellite pulses.

A technique for enhanced generation of selected high harmonics in a gas medium, in a high ionization limit, is proposed in this paper. An aperiodically corrugated hollow-core fiber is employed to modulate the intensity of the fundamental laser pulse along the direction of propagation, resulting in multiple quasi-phase-matched high harmonic emissions at the cutoff region. Simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is applied for optimizing the aperiodic hollow-core fiber. Our simulation shows that the yield of selected harmonics is increased equally by up to 2 orders of magnitude compared with no modulation and this permits flexible control of the quasi-phase-matched emission of selected harmonics by appropriate corrugation.

New parasitic lasing suppression techniques are developed and high gain amplification is demonstrated in a petawatt level Ti:sapphire amplifier based on the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) scheme. Cladding the large aperture Ti:sapphire with refractive-index matched liquid doped with absorber suppresses the transverse lasing. The acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter (AOPDF) is used to realize side-lobe suppression in the temporal profile of the compressed pulse. The 800 nm laser output with peak power of 0.89 PW and pulse width of 29.0 fs is demonstrated.

We propose an asymmetric double AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well structure with a common continuum to generate a large cross-phase modulation (XPM). It is found, owing to resonant tunneling, that a large XPM can be achieved with vanishing linear and two-photon absorptions.

Two-cycle optical pulses with duration of 5 fs and energy of 0.7 mJ have been generated at 1 kHz by compressing the 38 fs laser pulses from a carrier-envelope phase (CEP) controlled Ti:sapphire laser system through a cascade filamentation compression technique. A simple and effective method is developed to suppress multiple filament formation and stabilize a single filament by inserting a soft aperture with an appropriate diameter into the driving laser beam prior to focusing, resulting in an excellent compressed beam quality. The good beam quality and potentially higher peak power make this ultrashort laser pulse source a significant tool for high-field physics applications.

The dedifferentiation agent "reversine" [2-(4-morpholinoanilino)-N6-cyclohexyladenine 2], which can induce myogenic lineage-committed cells to become multipotent mesenchymal progenitor cells, was discovered by Shuibing Chen et al. in 2003. But its effects on neurons were unknown. Using patch-clamp technique, we found that reversine inhibits spontaneous synaptic transmission in cultured rat hippocampal neurons without influencing the dynamics function of potassium, sodium and calcium channels. This result suggests that reversine may also act as a dedifferentiation agent in neurons, and inhibiting the synaptic transmission maybe the early step of neuronal dedifferentiation.

We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation in a helium atom with a two-color optical field synthesized by an intense 6 fs pulse at 800 nm and a relatively weak 21.3 fs pulse at 400 nm. When the frequency-doubled pulse is properly time shifted with respect to the fundamental pulse, an ultrabroad extreme ultraviolet supercontinuum spectrum with a 148 eV spectral width can be generated which directly creates an isolated 65 as pulse even without phase compensation. We explain this extraordinary phenomenon by analyzing maximum electron kinetic energies at different return times.

The effects of beta amyloid (Abeta) on cytoplasmic Ca(2+) ([Ca(2+)](c)) have been studied extensively, but the current literature on this aspect is confusing. We reported that 20 microM Abeta(25-35) significantly inhibited the synchronized spontaneous cytoplasmic Ca(2+) transients immediately after application, whereas it had little effect on the baseline [Ca(2+)](c) concentration in neurons. Abeta(1-42) had a similar effect on the Ca(2+) transients as Abeta(25-35), while it increased baseline [Ca(2+)](c) concentration gradually. However, Abeta(1-40) had little effect on either Ca(2+) transients or baseline [Ca(2+)](c). Such differential effects of Abeta on Ca(2+) signals might explain, at least partially, the confusing observations from the previous studies and provide important therapeutic implications for preventing or reversing early neuron damage in Alzheimer's disease.

We found that Ce3+:Lu2Si2O7 single crystals could be excited at 800 nm by using a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser. The emission spectra of Ce3+:Lu2Si2O7 crystals were the same for one-photon excitation at 267 nm as for excitation at 800 nm. The emission intensity of Ce3+:Lu2Si2O7 crystals was found to depend on the cube of the laser power at 800 nm, consistent with simultaneous absorption of three 800 nm photons. The measured value of the three-photon absorption cross section is sigma'3=2.44x10(-77) cm6 s2.

The lifetime of a plasma channel produced by self-guiding intense femtosecond laser pulses in air is largely prolonged by adding a high voltage electrical field in the plasma and by introducing a series of femtosecond laser pulses. An optimal lifetime value is realized through adjusting the delay among these laser pulses. The lifetime of a plasma channel is greatly enhanced to 350 ns by using four sequential intense 100fs(FWHM) laser pulses with an external electrical field of about 350kV/m, which proves the feasibility of prolonging the lifetime of plasma by adding an external electrical field and employing multiple laser pulses.

Effective diode-pumped cw tunable laser action of a new alloyed crystal Yb:Gd(2(1-x))Y(2x)SiO(5) (Yb:GYSO, x = 0.5) is demonstrated for the first time. The alloyed crystal retains excellent laser properties of Gd(2)SiO(5) (GSO), as well as the favorable growth properties and the desirable physical of Y(2)SiO(5) (YSO). With a 5-at.% Yb:GYSO sample, we achieved 2.44 W output power at 1081.5 nm and a slope efficiency of 57%. And its laser wavelength could be tuned from 1030nm to 1089 nm.

The spectral and the temporal behavior of high-intensity negatively chirped femtosecond pulses in normally dispersive media at different input parameters are experimentally studied. The spectrum of the pulse is reshaped due to strong self-actions. The pulse is self-compressed, instead of broadening, accompanied with the spectral FWHM bandwidth shortened. Steepening of the leading edge of the pulse and spectral red-shift are observed in the experiment. The numerical simulation shows that the result is in agreement with the experimental result.

A scheme for giant enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level system with double dark resonances is proposed. Compared with that generated in a single-dark-resonance system, the Kerr nonlinearity can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude with vanishing linear absorption. We attribute this dramatic enhancement to the interaction of dark resonances.

Nonlinear propagation of fs laser pulses in liquids and the dynamic processes of filamentation such as self-focusing, intensity clamping, and evolution of white light production have been analyzed by using one- and two-photon fluorescence. The energy losses of laser pulses caused by multiphoton absorption and conical emission have been measured respectively by z-scan technique. Numerical simulations of fs laser propagation in water have been made to explain the evolution of white light production as well as the small-scale filaments in liquids we have observed by a nonlinear fluorescence technique.

It is proposed that single attosecond pulses be generated via high-order harmonic generation by using a two-color pump pulse with time dependent ellipticity. The two-color pump pulse is created by the fundamental field and its second harmonic: the fundamental field is left-circularly polarized and the second harmonic is right-circularly polarized. Numerical simulations show that single attosecond pulses can be produced in the cut-off region by using the synthesis of 20 fs left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized pulses with a pulse delay of 20 fs. The attosecond pulses produced this way are much stronger than that produced by a few-cycle linear polarized pulse of comparable intensity.

By employing pump-probe back longitudinal diffractometry, the electron density and decay dynamics of a weak plasma channel created by a 1-KHz fs laser in air has been investigated. With ultrashort laser pulses of 50 fs and low energy of 0.6 mJ, we observe weak plasma channels with a length approximately 2 cm in air. An analytical reconstruction method of electron density has been analyzed, which is sensitive to the phase shift and channel size. The electron density in the weak plasma channel is extracted to be about 4 x 10(16) cm(-3). The diameters of the plasma channel and the filament are about 50 and 150 microm, respectively, and the measurable electron density can be extended to less than 10(15) cm(-3). Moreover, a different time-frequency technique called linearly chirped longitudinal diffractometry is proposed to time-resolved investigate ultrafast ionization dynamics of laser-irradiated gas, laser interaction with cluster beam, etc.

Attosecond-pulse extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) photoionization in a two-color laser field is investigated. Attosecond pulse trains with different numbers of pulses are examined, and their strong dependence on photoelectronic spectra is found. Single-color driving-laser-field-assisted attosecond XUV photoionization cannot determine the number of attosecond pulses from the photoelectronic energy spectrum that are detected orthogonally to the beam direction and the electric field vector of the linearly polarized laser field. A two-color-field-assisted XUV photoionization scheme is proposed for directly determining the number of attosecond pulses from a spectrum detected orthogonally.

Ultrashort high-intensity electromagnetic solitons in both underdense and overdense plasmas are investigated. Comparison is made for solitons with smooth and sharp electron density profiles. It is found that subcycle relativistic solitons can propagate from low-density to high-density plasmas.

Ponderomotive force driven acceleration of an electron at the focus of a high-intensity short-pulse laser is considered. Accounting for the asymmetry of acceleration and deceleration due to the evolution of the Gaussian laser beam waist, the energized electron is extracted from the laser pulse by the longitudinal ponderomotive force. It is shown that an electron's energy gain in the range of MeV can be realized for laser intensities above 10(19) W microm(2)/cm(2). Final energy gain as a function of the scattering angle and the electron's initial position has also been discussed.

Synchronized spontaneous Ca2+ spikes in networked neurons represent periodic burst firing of action potentials, which are believed to play a major role in the development and plasticity of neuronal circuitry. How these network activities are shaped and modulated by extrinsic factors during development, however, remains to be studied. Here we report that synchronized Ca2+ spikes among cultured hippocampal neurons can be modulated by two small factors that act on G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs): the neuropeptide PACAP (pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide) and the chemokine SDF-1 (stromal cell-derived factor-1). PACAP effectively increases the frequency of the synchronized Ca2+ spikes when applied acutely; the PACAP potentiation of Ca2+ spikes requires the activation of the PACAP-specific PAC1 GPCRs and is mediated by the activation of cAMP signaling pathway. SDF-1, on the other hand, significantly reduces the frequency of these Ca2+ spikes through the activation of its specific GPCR CXCR4; the inhibitory action of SDF-1 is mediated by the inhibition of cAMP pathway through the Gi component of GPCRs. Taken together, these results demonstrate that synchronized neuronal network activity can be effectively modulated by physiologically and developmentally relevant small factors that act on GPCRs to target the cAMP pathway. Such modulation of neuronal activity through GPCRs may represent a significant mechanism that underlies the neuronal plasticity during neural development and functioning.

We present a method of image-speckle contrast for the nonprecalibration measurement of the root-mean-square roughness and the lateral-correlation length of random surfaces with Gaussian correlation. We use the simplified model of the speckle fields produced by the weak scattering object in the theoretical analysis. The explicit mathematical relation shows that the saturation value of the image-speckle contrast at a large aperture radius determines the roughness, while the variation of the contrast with the aperture radius determines the lateral-correlation length. In the experimental performance, we specially fabricate the random surface samples with Gaussian correlation. The square of the image-speckle contrast is measured versus the radius of the aperture in the 4f system, and the roughness and the lateral-correlation length are extracted by fitting the theoretical result to the experimental data. Comparison of the measurement with that by an atomic force microscope shows our method has a satisfying accuracy.
