Citrus aurantium is one of the most common traditional Chinese medicines. In this paper, the chemical components, content determination and pharmacological actions of C. aurantium were summarized for the comprehensive utilization of its resources. Because of the complicated resources of C. aurantium, only one single component as index couldn't reflect the quality and effects and comprehensive evaluation which concluding multiple components should be established in the future quality control. In recent years, the pharmacological effects research of C. aurantium has made tremendous progress, and it is important to explore new drugs from the development and utilization of the active ingredient of C. aurantium. Objective: To evaluate the safety of artificial musk by determining its content of five hazard heavy metals., Method: The contents of Pb, Cd,As,Hg,and Cu in artificial musk were detected using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry., Result: The contents of Pb,Cd,As,Hg,and Cu was less than 0.35,0.05,0.30,0.20,and 4.50 mg/kg in artificial musk., Conclusion: Artificial musk has low contents of heavy metals and therefore meets the safety and quality requirments.

Sailonggu, a traditional Chinese medicine is whole skeleton of Myospalax baileyi, which is a kind of animal of rodent from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China. Osteon Myospalacem Baileyiis the first category medicinal materials of China Food and Drug Administration. For better quality control, a method of the morphological identification of Osteon Myospalacem Baileyi was established by means of studying characteristics of the animal skeleton, it's microscopic characteristics of powder, and literatures comparison. The characteristics of Osteon Myospalacem Baileyi were observed and recorded in detail and marked by number, which could be used for identifying crude drug of Osteon Myospalacem Baileyi efficiently.

The samples of sulfur-fumigated Paeoniae Alba Radix acquired both by random spot check from domestic market and self-production by the research group in the laboratory were used to evaluate the effects of sulphur fumigation on the quality of Paeoniae Alba Radix by comparing sulfur-fumigated degree and character, the content of paeoniflorin and paeoniflorin sulfurous acid ester, and changes of the fingerprint. We used methods in Chinese Pharmacopeia to evaluate the character of sulfur-fumigated Paeoniae Alba Radix and determinate the content of aulfur-fumigated paeoniflorin. LC-MS method was used to analyze paeoniflorin-converted products. HPLC fingerprint methods were established to evaluate the differences on quality by similarity. Results showed that fumigated Paeoniae Alba Radix became white and its unique fragrance disappeared, along with the production of pungent sour gas. It also had a significant effect on paeoniflorin content. As sulfur smoked degree aggravated, paeoniflorin content decreased subsequently, some of which turned into paeoniflorin sulfurous acid ester, and this change was not reversible. Fingerprint also showed obvious changes. Obviously, sulfur fumigation had severe influence on the quality of Paeoniae Alba Radix, but we can control the quality of the Paeoniae Alba Radix by testing the paeoniflorin sulfurous acid ester content.

The chemical constituents of Safflower injection were isolated and purified by polyamide, silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, ODS column chromatographies and preparative HPLC. As a result, sixteen compounds have been isolated. Based on the spectral data analysis, their structures were elucidated as scutellarin (1), kaempferol-3-O-β-rutinoside(2), hydroxysafflor yellow A(3), rutin (4), coumalic acid(5), adenosine(6), syringoside(7), (3E)-4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-3-buten-2-one(8), (8Z)-decaene-4, 6-diyne-1-Oβ-D-glucopyranoside(9), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (10), (2E, 8E) -tetradecadiene-4, 6-diyne-1, 12, 14-triol-1-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (11), kaem-pferol-3-O-β-sophorose (12), uridine (13), roseoside (14), cinnamic acid (15), and kaempferol (16). Compounds 1,2,7,9,11 and 12 were isolated from the Safflower injection for the first time. The anti-platelet aggregation activities of the isolated compounds were assayed. The results indicated all tested compounds exhibited potent activity except for 5, while 2, 3, 9 and 12 showed strong activity against platelet aggregation.

In our study, 198 types of pesticides in 120 types 333 lots of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which were reasonably classified according to its matrix property, were determined by using the pretreatment platform and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. As a result, 158 were contaminated with pesticides. However, the content of pesticides in most TCM was very low. In addition, types of pesticides were different in different part of materia medica. In conclusion, the current status of pesticide residues pollutants in TCM was summarized, and the result can provide proof for the formulation of maximum residue limit. The new species of herbs and the new detecting index should be electively monitored in Chinese Pharmacopeia.

The role of vitamin D receptor (VDR) rs2228570 polymorphism on the risk of ovarian cancer has been studied in many studies, but the relationship between VDR rs2228570 polymorphism and ovarian cancer is still unclear. We thus performed a meta-analysis of published studies to provide a comprehensive assessment of the association. Fourteen individual studies with a total of 10,964 subjects were finally included into the meta-analysis. We assessed the association by calculating the pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI). There was no heterogeneity among those included studies. Meta-analysis of 14 studies showed that the VDR rs2228570 polymorphism was associated with risk of ovarian cancer under three main comparison models (T versus C: OR = 1.09, 95 % CI 1.03 to 1.15, P = 0.004; TT versus CC: OR = 1.17, 95 % CI 1.04 to 1.32, P = 0.01; and TT/CT versus CC: OR = 1.12, 95 % CI 1.03 to 1.21, P = 0.007). Subgroup analysis in Caucasians further identified the obvious association. There was no evidence of publications bias. These data from the meta-analysis suggest that VDR rs2228570 polymorphism is associated with risk of ovarian cancer in Caucasians. More studies are warranted to assess the association between the VDR rs2228570 polymorphism and ovarian cancer in Asians and Africans.

Objective: To observe the effect of acupuncture of Jianjing (GB 21) and non-acupoint on gallbladder volume and clinical symptoms of chronic cholecystitis patients., Methods: Sixty cases of chronic cholecystitis patients were equally randomized into Jianjing (GB 21) group and non-acupoint group. A filiform needle was inserted into Jianjing (GB 21) or non-acupoint (2 cun lateral to the mid-point between the spinous processes of the 6th and 7th cervical vertebrae) on the right side, manipulated for a while till "Deqi", and retained for 30 min. A color Doppler ultrasound scanner was used to detect the volume of the gallbladder before and 15 min after acupuncture stimulation and 30 min after withdrawal of the acupuncture needle. Changes of the patients symptoms of shoulder-back pain, stomachache, distension and nausea were evaluated according to the patients' complaints., Results: After acupuncture intervention, the remission rates of shoulder-back pain and stomachache in non-acupoint and GB 21 groups were 56.67% and 90.00% respectively, while the effective rates of the patients' gastric distention and nausea in non-acupoint and GB 21 groups were 16.67% and 23.33%, respectively. The therapeutic effect of Jianjing (GB 21) was apparently superior to that of non-acupoint in pain relief (P < 0.05). Fifteen min following acupuncture stimulation and 30 min after withdrawal of the acupuncture needle, the gallbladder volume in cholecystitis patients with deflated gallbladder was increased apparently in GB 21 group (P < 0.01), and that in patients with expanded gallbladder was decreased significantly (P < 0.01). No significant differences were found among pre-, during and post-treatment in the non-acupoint group in the effects of acupuncture on regulation of the deflated and expanded gallbladder volume (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: Acupuncture stimulation of Jianjing (GB 21) can effectively relieve shoulder-back pain and stomachache, and regulate the volume of the deflated and expanded gallbladder in cholecystitis patients. The effect of acupuncture of non-acupoint is relatively poorer in relieving the cholecystitis patients' symptoms and regulating the gallbladder volume.

Biochars were prepared from straws of rice, peanut and soybean and rice hull using a low temperature pyrolysis method and adsorption of methylene blue by these biochars were investigated with batch and leaching experiments. Results indicated that biochars have high adsorption capacity for methylene blue and followed the order: rice straw char > soybean straw char > peanut straw char > rice hull char. This order is generally consistent with the amount of negative charge and specific surface area of these biochars. While methylene blue was mainly adsorbed specifically by the biochars, because the adsorption of methylene blue increased with the increase of ionic strength and the adsorption led to the shift of zeta potential of biochar particles to positive value direction. Langmuir equation fitted the adsorption isotherms well and can be used to describe the adsorption behaviors of methylene blue by the biochars. The maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue predicted by langmuir equation was 196.1, 169.5, 129.9 and 89.3 mmol x kg(-1) for rice straw char, soybean straw char, peanut straw char and rice hull char, respectively. Leaching experiments show that rice hull char of 156 g can remove methylene blue from 30 L water containing 0.3 mmol x L(-1) of methylene blue completely and the cumulative amount of methylene blue absorbed by the biochar reaches 57.7 mmol x kg(-1). The biochars can be used as efficient adsorbents to remove methylene blue from waste water of dye.

Objective: To establish a mutual mode fingerprint of Curcuma wenyujin for quality control of C. wenyujin., Methods: Waters Symmetry C18 column was used; the mobile phase was methanol-water in a linear gradient elution with the flow rate of 1.0 mL/ min, the temperature of column was 30 degrees C; the detection wavelength was set at 215 nm. 10 batches of C. wenyujin from different places and different time were determined, 3 batches of C. phaeocaulis and 3 batches of C. kwangsiensis were determined in the same chromatographic conditions., Results: 11 mutual peaks in the fingerprint of the 10 groups of C. wenyujin, and the S peak among them represented germacrone., Conclusion: Curcuma wenyujin's fingerprints have strong feature and specificity, which can be combined with assaying in the quality control of C. wenyujin.

Objective: Endotoxin tolerance refers to a low response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). We hypothesized that growth factor independence 1 (Gfi1) involves in the endotoxin tolerance in macrophages., Methods: Endotoxin tolerance was induced in the RAW264.7 cell line and thioglycolate-elicited murine peritoneal macrophages by incubation with 100 ng/ml LPS for 20 h. Macrophages without the pretreatment were set as control. Both endotoxin tolerant and control cells were then stimulated with 1,000 ng/ml LPS for indicated period of incubation. Gfi1 mRNA expression and protein production were investigated by real-time PCR and Western blotting, respectively. ELISA was performed to quantify the secretion of TNF-alpha and IL-6., Result: Compared with non-endotoxin tolerant macrophages, endotoxin tolerant cells secreted a lower amount of TNF-alpha and IL-6. The mRNA expression of Gfi1 in endotoxin tolerant macrophages was higher than that of control in both RAW264.7 cells and thioglycolate-elicited murine peritoneal macrophages. The protein production was accordingly up-regulated in endotoxin tolerant RAW264.7 cells., Conclusion: In in vitro endotoxin tolerant macrophages, the expression of Gfi1 mRNA and protein were up-regulated after high dose LPS stimulation, accompanied with a blunted TNF-alpha and IL-6 secretion. Gfi1 might participate in the mechanism of endotoxin tolerance.

Based on GIS technique and the methods of mean-squared deviation weight decision and catastrophe progression, a more clear definition and associated evaluation for ecosystem resilience were given, with a case study in the regions across Qinghai-Tibet railway by using the indices of plant community coverage, species diversity, and biomass. It was shown that the areas with high ecosystem resilience were mainly located in the Qilian Mountain meadow grassland, Huangshui Valley needle-leaved and deciduous broad-leaved forest, and south Tanggula Mountain kobresia swamp meadow, while those with the lowest resilience were in the central part of Qaidam Basin, and the Kunlun Mountains. Most areas in the regions had higher or medium ecosystem resilience, with a trend of that in the south of Kunlun Mountains, the resilience in the north of the railway was lower, while in the east of Qaidam Basin (especially in the Qinghai Lake area), the resilience was lower in the south than in the north of the railway. Through the evaluation of ecosystem resilience, the key issues in the process of ecological resilience could be found, and corresponding effective measures would be pointed out to manage alpine ecosystems. Moreover, combining with the evaluation of vulnerability, scientific basis for regional development could be provided to avoid or mitigate the negative effects of human activities on eco-environment.

Nature, diversity, and openness are what we demand from urban green space in the 21st century. Based on the summary of urban green space connotation, types and significance, this paper reviewed the research hotspots of urban green space, i.e., conservation and planning of urban-rural fringe, restoration and preservation of natural areas and indigenous vegetation, ecological restoration and planning of green way, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem structure and services, and management policy. The difference between foreign and domestic urban green space researches and practices were summarized, and some preferential urban green space research aspects in the future were proposed. It was suggested that in China, urban green space strategy should be integrated into urban planning and land use planning.

Objective: To study the effect of testosterone propionate (TP) on the distribution pattern of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in two types of motoneuron (Mn) pools in rats., Method: The double labeling of cholera toxin B subunit coupled with colloidal gold (CB-Au) retrograde identification combining with immunocytochemistry was mainly used to reveal the distribution pattern of CGRP-like immunoreactivity (CGRP-LI) and its changes in the motoneuron pools labeled by CB-Au., Result: TP injected intramuscularly 28 days later significantly decreased CGRP expression in Mn pool innervating extensor digitorum longus (EDL, fast-twitch), comparing with corresponding control and castration group respectively (P < 0.001), while no significant effect on Mn pools innervating soleus (SOL, slow-twitch, P > 0.05) was observed., Conclusion: EDL-Mn pool is more sensitive to testosterone propionate than SOL-Mn pool in regulating CGRP expression.

Objective: To study the chemical constituents in seeds of Helicia nilagirica., Method: The ethanol extract was seperated by petroleum ether, dichloromethane, n-butanol in sequence, then isolated by silica gel column chromatography. The structures were identified and elucidated by physicochemical properties and spectral analysis., Result: Five compounds were isolated from the dichloromethane and n-butanol extracts, identified as p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (2), gallic acid (3), helicide (4), 4-formylpymyl-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5)., Conclusion: All the compounds except IV were isolated from the plant for the first time. The compounds I, II and III were isolated from the genus Helicia for the first time.

The flower of Trollius chinensis Bunge is used for treating upper respiratory infections, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and bronchitis in Chinese folk medicine. The antiviral activities of the crude extract, total flavonoids, orientin, vitexin and proglobeflowery acid isolated from the flowers of T. chinensis against parainfluenza type 3 (Para 3) virus were investigated. The results showed that the crude extract and total flavonoids exhibited a weak antiviral activity against Para 3. Orientin and vitexin demonstrated potent or moderate antiviral activity against Para 3. Proglobeflowery acid showed weak antiviral activity against Para 3.

Forty-four medicinal herbs were tested for antiviral activities against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) by means of the cytopathologic effect (CPE) assay. Twenty-seven of the 44 medicinal herbs showed potent or moderate antiviral activities against RSV with 50% inhibition concentration (IC(50)) ranging from 6.3 to 52.1 microg/ml, and with selectivity index (SI) ranging from 2.0 to 32.1. Further purification of the active extracts from Sophora flavescens Ait. and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi led to the identification of anagyrine (2), oxymatrine (7), sophoranol (10), wogonin (12), and oroxylin A (13) as the potent anti-RSV components.
