Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a proprietary program for increasing self-efficacy among track and field athletes through vicarious experience and successful control over excitation and to determine the changes in the cognitive dimensions related to self-efficacy: dispositional optimism, hope of success and locus of control. An experimental two-group design with a pre-test and a post-test in the experimental and control groups was used. Forty-two athletes (29 women and 13 men) aged 17 to 24 years randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups took part in the study. The General Scale of Self- Efficacy, Hope for Success Questionnaire, Life Orientation Test Revised, and Internal- External Locus of Control Scale were used. The study's results indicate that the program was effective. Participants in the intervention group demonstrated a substantial increase in self-efficacy ( P = 0.001). This was not observed in the control group ( P = 0.732). After the completion of the program, athletes in the intervention group had significantly higher levels of self-efficacy ( P = 0.001) and optimism ( P = 0.017). They also had more internal locus of control compared to the control group ( P = 0.001). Contrary to expectations, athletes in the intervention group demonstrated a substantially lower level of propensity in pathways ( P = 0.001) as well as in agency ( P = 0.001) (both components of the hope for success). Abstract

Potential adverse consequences of exposure to air pollutants during exercise include decreased lung function, and exacerbation of asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. These effects are especially relevant for athletes and during international competitions, as they may impact athletic performance. Thus, assessing and mitigating exposure to air pollutants during exercising should be encouraged in sports venues. A comprehensive air quality assessment was carried out during the World Relays Yokohama 2019, in the stadium and the warm-up track. The pilot included on-line and off-line instrumentation for gaseous and particulate pollutants and meteorological parameters, and the comparison with local reference data. Air quality perception and exacerbation of symptoms of already-diagnosed diseases (mainly respiratory and cardiovascular) were assessed by athletes by means of questionnaires during training sessions. Median NO2 concentrations inside the stadium (25.6–31.9 μgm−3) were in the range of the Yokohama urban background, evidencing the impact of urban sources (e.g., traffic) on athletes' exposure during training and competition. The assessment of hourly air pollutant trends was identified as a valuable tool to provide guidance to reduce atheletes' exposure, by identifying the periods of the day with lowest ambient concentrations. This strategy could be adopted to define training and competition schedules, and would have special added value for athletes with respiratory conditions. Personal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was quantified through wearable silicone wristbands, and showed highly variability across volunteers. The wristbands are a simple approach to assess personal exposure to potentially toxic organic compounds. Further research would be necessary with regard to specific air pollutants that may trigger or exacerbate respiratory conditions typical of the athlete community. A high work of breathing (WOB) associated with pulmonary hyperventilation during physical exercise, may limit sports performance in long-distance runners (e.g. marathon). The assessment of changes in WOB during maximal oxygen consumption test (V̇O2-máx.) allows knowing the intensity of exercise at which the higher WOB limits the delivery of nutrients and oxygen in muscles involved during locomotion. The non-invasive assessment of muscle oxygenation (SmO2) by the interpretation of wavelengths of near-infrared range (Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, NIRS) is a useful and new method to quantify muscle work, used at intercostal muscles (SmO2-m. intercostales) to the WOB, and at locomotor muscles (SmO2-m.vastus laterallis) to external load. Thus, as the intensity of exercise increases, a higher decrease in SmO2 is showed. However, until now is unknown how the ventilatory strategy used to achieve pulmonary hyperventilation affects the SmO2 of these muscle groups, whose muscle work affects them reciprocally through the metabolic reflex. As a report-case, we present the changes in SmO2-m.intercostales (WOB) and peripheral (SmO2-m.vastus laterallis) during the V̇O2-máx. test. in two competitive marathon runners with similar anthropometric characteristics, physical performance, training regimen and sports history. The objective is to give new information for identifying that the ventilatory strategy used during exercise can affect the local oxygenation in muscles with high demand during exercise. Bakgrund Massage är vanligt förekommande inom idrotten. Syftet är att förebygga skador, förbättra prestationen och påskynda återhämtningen. Studier som undersökt om massage innan aktivitet (pre-performance) påverkar prestationsförmågan har visat varierande resultat. En muskelgrupp som är särskilt viktig för friidrottare/sprinters är hamstringsmuskulaturen. Denna muskelgrupp utsätts för stora belastningar och skadas ofta. Det saknas studier som specifikt har undersökt idrottsmassagens effekter på denna muskelgrupp. Syfte Syftet var att undersöka vilken påverkan idrottsmassage har på effektutvecklingen, dvs den explosiva styrkan (power), i hamstringsmuskulaturen hos friidrottare. Metod Totalt nio personer (8 män och 1 kvinna), vilka var aktiva sprinters eller häcklöpare, deltog i studien. En person fick smärta och obehag under styrketesterna och uteslöts. Den explosiva styrkan utvärderades i en lårcurlmaskin som var kopplad till mätutrustningen MuscleLab. Personerna fick efter en standardiserad uppvärmning göra 10 explosiva koncentriska kontraktioner med hamstringsmusklerna i höger och vänster ben (baselinetest). Ett medelvärde i Watt beräknades av de åtta bästa kontraktionerna. Efter lottning till antingen interventions- eller kontrollben fick interventionsbenet idrottsmassage i fem minuter. Efter 20 minuter upprepades styrketestet i lårcurlmaskinen (akut test). Två dygn senare upprepades testet (subakut test). Resultat Det var ingen signifikant skillnad i explosiv styrka mellan interventions- och kontrollben vid de tre testtillfällena. Det var heller ingen skillnad mellan baseline-akut eller baseline-subakut för vare sig interventions- eller kontrollben. Den explosiva styrkan i hamstringsmusklerna ökade signifikant mellan testtillfälle två (akut) och tre (subakut) för båda benen. Konklusion Resultaten visade att idrottsmassage inte har någon påverkan på den explosiva hamstringsstyrkan hos friidrottare i direkt anslutning till massagen (det akuta skedet) eller två dy

Abstract

Oral history interview with J. Towner Smith conducted by Lewis Carlson on May 5, 1989. J. Towner Smith was WMU’s first All-American. He was a long time track coach, worked in counseling center and was a long time Dean of Men. He discusses his early childhood, high school sports, student life at WMU, and success in track. Years after graduation, he returned to WMU as a coach in 1939. He recollects stories of coaching, memorable WMU coaches, students and athletes, and stories of interacting for President Waldo. Smith retired in July 1966 after 45 years at WMU.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Ira Murchison, conducted by Lewis Carlson on December 29, 1986. Murchison discusses his biography written by a former student, volunteer coaching in Chicago. He recollects how he started in track, his success in high school, coming to WMU and training under George Dales, and his continuing successes at track meets, the NCAA championships, 1956 Olympic trials, and Pan American Games. He outlines a brief break from running due to illness and his long recovery. During the 1970s, Murchison coached a women’s track team in Chicago. Abstract

Oral history interview with Lawrence Russell conducted by Lewis Carlson on October 17, 1989. Lawrence Russell was a student at all three of WMU’s training schools in the 1930s. He discusses attending Western Training School, Western State High School, and Western State Teachers College, and the changes to campus during that time. He recalls the teachers at the training school, receiving his first student job through President Waldo, his experiences in track and field and football, and his graduation in 1936. He also recounts Waldo stories, influential coaches, social life on campus, and the W Club.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Russell L. Gabier, conducted by Lewis Carlson on November 8, 1990. Gabier discusses his childhood and education in Mesick, Michigan, and his introduction to track at Cadillac High School. A state champion in the one-mile track event, Russ graduated from Cadillac High School in 1946, joined the army that same year, and served in Japan. At Western Michigan University, Gabier won the MAC championship in track, held the record for the mile, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991. He worked as a high school teacher and cross-country coach for the Hidden Valley school system before returning to WMU where he worked as assistant director of admissions starting in 1958. Gabier discusses in depth the fund raising processes in the private sector and his enjoyment of the work. He retired as WMU Director of Alumni Affairs and Development in 1986. Later that year, Gabier became the first executive director of the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation until his retirement in 1992. He died on February 18, 2018 in Kalamazoo, Michigan., Tape one damaged. Oral history interview with WMU alumnus George Dales, conducted by Lew Carlson on May 8, 1989 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Dales discusses how he came to work in sports at WMU, and working as an instructor at Miami University for the Navy on aboard the USS Alaska. Dales also discusses recruitment techniques, Olympics athletes, track stars, a brief international coaching experience in Greece and Mexico City, employment conditions, working as editor for the Track and Field Quarterly journal, racial incidents in Kokomo, and the shortcomings of the sports system., Transcribed by Michelle Wright.

Abstract

Oral History interview with Tom Coyne conducted by Alan Brown on May 24, 1989. Tom Coyne was a student and track and field athlete at WMU in the 50s. Later, he joined the faculty as Vice President Emeritus for Student Services. Tom Coyne recalls his childhood, early education, growing up through the Depression, working as a caddy at the Midlothian Country Club, early participation in sports, and being recruited by Bill Perrigo to WMU. He also describes the campus in the 50s, GIs returning to campus, teammates, and track meets. He compares the teaching styles of influential professors and coaches. He joined the faculty in 1970.
